Dark ears turned to the chirping of nocturnal insects, the black wolf stalked through the forest, following a trail of freshly-spilled blood, the heavy metallic smell of it guiding him along. It led him somewhere he knew he should not be, by the smell of the place. This was claimed land, he knew, but he wouldn't be here long. That old doe would be dead soon enough. It all depended on if he was able to claim his prize before anyone noticed him. He licked his chops, still some blood staining the fur of his cheek, anticipating the moment he would tear into his kill. He was in no hurry, his gait smooth and steady, conserving his energy. There was no need to run after an animal that was in the middle of bleeding out. Razza

Mikhail Like the pin of a compass was drawn to the north, Mikhail was drawn to the blood. He could practically taste it, a thin, red thread in the air that lead him to the territory's farther edge. He cut through the darkness quietly in his pursuit. The blood hadn't smelled of wolf, and yet the first shadow he crossed was in the shape of one. It was still far off, and difficult to keep track of in the night. But it was there, having crossed the border, and Mikhail wasn't terribly surprised. He approached, figuring the stranger would've spotted him long ago. The night wasn't nearly so kind to a pelt like his. "You there, that's far enough." Mikhail squinted, his lip curling in disapproval. He could see now that it was a male, and the blood smell clung to him. "You're on pack lands. Turn and be gone."@alexandros

Already, he had company. He smelled it before he saw it, the shadow of another wolf moving through the foliage. Distant and difficult to make out, but the movement was unmissable. Someone was coming to intercept him. Nycteus kept moving, staying on the trail. He won't get to it before this other wolf got to him, he knew. He was already out of time. "You there, that's far enough," said a man with an abrasive voice. Nycteus stopped in his tracks then, turning just a bit to meet the stranger head-on. His feet were planted solidly on the ground, shoulder-width apart. Silver eyes scanned over the wolf. A guard or a soldier, no doubt. His stance was strong and his body well-conditioned, with a face incredibly dour and harsh, dark eyes. He noticed a tear in his ear and he could swear a couple of scars, too. The grizzled stranger demanded he be gone. Nycteus considered it for a moment. Most times, he would comply. However, prey that was rightfully his lay just ahead. He'd come this far. He'd all but killed that doe; time would do the rest of the work for him. He wasn't going to let his effort be wasted. "I mean no harm," said Nycteus. "My quarry led me here in its confused, frightened wandering. I'm here to claim it, then I will leave."Razza

Mikhail At Mikhail's word the stranger halted, which was already a more promising start than most. It allowed him for a brief moment to clearly make out what he was dealing with here: a much larger specimen who sized him up in tandem, broad-shouldered and sharp-edged. Which was saying something, in this kind of dark. He was the type of man that could easily make himself a threat, and had the muscle to back it up. Mikhail was unmoved. The creature hiding against his spine, however, seemed to sense his train of thought, and discreetly made her way to the back of his neck. Just as they practiced. "I mean no harm. My quarry led me here in its confused, frightened wandering.""Then it is as good as lost to you," Mikhail said. "Outsiders are not welcomed here. Wait outside our border to see if your prey crosses back, if you insist." Mikhail took a step forward, good eye catching on a discolored smudge on the man's cheek. He raised his head by a small margin, not only to see the other wolf better, but to hide the agitated rustling at his nape. "But if you honestly mean no harm, then you will leave."@alexandros

By the first words out of the grizzled man's mouth, Nycteus knew he was not interested in negotiating. He had a thought, then, to heed the man's words and leave... he could wait a few hours and come back for his kill. However, he wasn't certain the guard would move on from this area and if he did, it was doubtful he was the only one patrolling tonight. He'd likely get caught again, and even if he managed to get to his kill undetected, something else will likely have gotten to it before he did. It was worth it to persist. Nycteus stepped forward just as the other man had, sweeping over him with an up-and-down glance before meeting his eyes. They didn't quite match -- the left one was murkier than the other, not quite focused the same. Nycteus's lips were very slightly upturned at the corners, almost like the shade of a smile but it did not at all reach his eyes. "You and I both know that would be a waste of time," he said. "I was not asking. I will claim what is rightfully mine."Razza

Mikhail The man came closer, too. One step deeper into Au'Dar land. And so it was decided. Neither of them were going to back down, any hope for a nonviolent encounter swept away like spring pollen in the wind. It would be a lie to say Mikhail was entirely disappointed. Cocked up at the corners, the stranger's lips did not form a smile nor a sneer, but Mikhail took it as an invitation for aggression all the same. Side-stepping, his own, grizzled maw parted to release a snarl. At his back, his tafa prepared to be launched to safety at a very precise moment. "Then I will be rid of you by force, and your efforts will fill the bellies of my pack."@alexandros

A step to the side and a flash of sharp teeth, the guard's snarl pierced through the night. Nycteus was unfazed. He stood still, stance squared, directly facing his adversary. His unblinking stare was heavy and intent, waiting. It was those words that ignited a flash of anger within him, his expression dropping in an instant. With darkened eyes, he spoke, his tone chillingly calm. "Try, then."Razza

Mikhail Torn ear flicking at the man's urge, Mikhail decided against keeping either of them waiting any longer. Between offence and defense, he had little preference. Mikhail lunged, keeping his legs wide and low, aiming a snapping bite at the intruder's right foreleg with little intention to connect. It was one of his more predictable lines of thinking according to the wolves who'd trained him; most experienced fighters anticipate it from someone with a sturdy, low center of gravity such as himself. Even so, it game him imperative feedback, and hadn't failed him thus far. His muscles stayed taught, ready to back off at the first counteraction. He just wanted to see the man move. Ghale had been ready. With Mikhail's jolting, she'd been flung unceremoniously to the ground and into the grasses at his feet. No matter how many times they'd practiced, she'd never get used to the feeling of all the air being punched out of her. Still, she knew better than to stick around and complain. Hearing the snap of Mikhail's teeth behind her, she slunk off as quickly as she could into the night. @alexandros

Nycteus watched his opponent spread out his paws, lowering his center of gravity, his eyes focused on the man's feet then his eyes right as he dashed forward, something dropping off of him at that moment too quick to discern. It was a split-second's distraction but there was no time to wonder or care. There was barely time to react. A swift backwards hop let him miss the snapping of teeth by just a hair's breadth. Kicking off from his landing, he flung himself towards the wolf with his forepaws half-tucked, aiming a bite for the leather of other wolf's nose. Razza

Mikhail He was fast. Sharp-footed. Mikhail would have trouble keeping up with the stranger, if he let things get too out of hand. Jaws clacking shut on air, Mikhail watched the quick retreat and anticipated the rebound-- his eyes just barely caught the glint of the other man's teeth, but it was enough. He was able to turn away in time to save his face, his shoulder taking the blow instead. A hot sting bloomed where skin broke easily. Now that he had the other man closer than before, he took his chance to lurch his weight forward in a shove, front paws lifting off the ground with the force of it and teeth aiming for purchase near the side of the man's neck as a secondary action. @alexandros

His fangs missed their target, slicing into his opponent's shoulder instead. The taste of iron was was just a fleeting trace, but the first blood always roused something fierce in him. His jaws parted for more, only for his next attack to be interrupted by a hard slam into his flank, the impact knocking him back. On reflex, Nycteus swung his back half behind him and tucked his chin, bringing his front right in the line of fire. Jaws clamped down on his muzzle before he could move, teeth searing into his skin. Nycteus bucked up, in an attempt to yank the other man up with him, and brought down a raised paw to rake his claws into the man's cloudy left eye. Razza

Mikhail Mikhail felt his attack find purchase, the blow landing in a far more valuable position than the initial target. In a misplaced moment of grace, the stranger's muzzle had been caught between his teeth, and Mikhail had wasted no time in biting down as hard as his position would let him. It was enough to taste blood, and Mikhail had even began twisting his grasp to worsen the damage, but before he could do as much as he would've liked his grip was used against him. A vicious snarl tore out of Mikhail's throat as he felt claws dig into the skin around his dead eye. His right side hadn't seen it coming, and with the shock of pain he dropped the man's muzzle, stumbling back a step. In a hasty grab for a moment to recover, he swung out his own paw harshly at the man's chest, hoping more that it would deter him from following Mikhail backwards than anything. His blind eye screwed shut, lip curling, steeling himself. @alexandros

The twisting and yanking made the pain so much worse, with that vicelike grip on his muzzle. His teeth were gritted, but he otherwise showed no reaction to how it hurt. Just as he had been taught, to remain stoic in his suffering. His position was terrible but he pushed through the pain and, in an attempt to turn it to his advantage, he brought his claws down on the other man's blind eye. The strike connected; the man snarled in agony, releasing his hold. He stumbled backwards and took a swing at Nycteus. Nycteus lunged, taking the hit but it didn't stop him. He snapped for his opponent's face once more, this time hoping for a solid grip. Razza
