Venturis Ventis is a semi-realistic wolf roleplay, which means we mix together both realistic and unrealistic factors when it comes to our characters and their world. But, minus wolves having the ability to talk, many factors of our characters are based on real wolves. Information about wolves, their appearances, their behaviors, ect. can be found here. This info can be used to create acceptable characters, as well as make in-character interaction feel more life-like.
Appearance Before we get into the details, a few things need pointed out first. -Breeds: On VV, we don't really use specific breeds of wolf. You are welcome to if you wish, but we do not. All of our information is a sort of combination of many breeds. So it is possible for a wolf who looks like a certain breed to also have other features, such as size, that they usually wouldn't. -Terrain: We are also aware that not all wolves live in the same sort of habitats. Similarly with breeds, we are basically throwing all of them together and are under the idea that all breeds can live in a place with a climate like the one our site has.
Eye Colors:
Wolf eyes are most commonly varying shades of brown, yellow, amber, gray, and sometimes green. In real life, wolf pups start the first few weeks of their life with blue eyes, but their eyes change to their adult color within 6 to 10 weeks. Another branch away from realism, on VV we will allow wolves to have blue eyes, but do be mindful that even here a wolf with bright blue eyes would not be very common.
Pelts Colors: Colors of wolf fur, realistically, can be many different ranges and are usually a combination of multiple colors. While most pelts are multiple colors, it is also possible for them to be solid in color. Black - Gray - White - Brown - Tan - Orange - Cream These are the primary wolf colors, most pelts having a combination between at least 2 or more. Those are the base colors, but various shades of each are possible. While realistic fur colors are obviously acceptable, on VV we do allow slight variations to give characters more...character. For example, if a silver wolf has a slight blue tint, that is acceptable. Or browns and oranges that are slightly more red than normal. If you are unsure if a certain pelt color is acceptable, ask the staff.
Markings: The markings found on typical wolves can be a very large range of things, whether they have light underbellies, darker ears, tipped tails, ect. Just looking up pictures of general wolves, there are a variety of patterns, very few that are exactly like another. Because of this, markings acceptable on VV can't really be put into a specific list. But, keep in mind that this is still semi-realistic. No, not everything is completely true to real life, but we aren't full fantasy either. You aren't going to find a wolf in the wild who has a black pelt covered in big white stars and hearts. While we know none of our members would do that, if you have a marking idea for a character and don't know if it is alright, ask a staff member.
Sizes Height:
Minus the specification of breeds, this is the general size chart that would be used to pick how tall a wolf is. In case it is difficult to read: Small Wolf: 24-29 inches (60-74 cm) Medium Wolf: 30-37 inches (75-94 cm) Large Wolf: 38-41 inches (95-105 cm) Any of these sizes is acceptable on VV.
Weight: Females: 60 to 100 pounds Males: 70 to 145 pounds For the sake of creativity, these weights can be slightly above or below, but do not go crazy.
Length: An average wolf's body is 3-5 feet long and their tails are normally 1-2 feet long, but, like with weight, these can be slightly stretched for the sake of character creation.
Mutations There are many mutations in the world found in all sorts of creatures. Just as many specific mutations are rare in real life, there are mutations that are rare here also and are limited in their creation. Keep in mind that the listed mutations are both realistic and unrealistic. Some of these may not even be found in real wolves, but to provide more creative freedom and make unique characters, mutations found in other animals, mostly other canines, will be applied here. In addition, there may be a mutation or two that would not be found in real life at all and are here, once again, for the sake of creativity. This is a small list, but it may expand in the future. If you think of a mutation that is not on this list and are not sure if it is allowed, message a member of staff. Albinism: Or albino, this is a coat/eye mutation in which the fur turns solid snow white and the eyes are varying shades of pinks and reds. Gigantism: When a wolf grows to an unnaturally large size. This is not common in real life, so it would be extremely rare here. Heterochromia: Different colored eyes. Should someone on VV create a wolf with this mutation, you are limited to only realistic wolf eye colors. This mutation can not be paired with the unique eye color. Unique Eye Color: A special mutation, this applies to eyes that would be completely unrealistic colors such as red, purple, ect. Though it may be obvious, this does not mean a wolf can have eyes that are a rainbow. This is a singular color.

Development -To make the growing of wolves easier, some realistic aspects of a growing wolf will be left out.-
Litters: Typical wolf litters are between 4-6 pups. On VV, there can be between 1-6, with 6 being somewhat more uncommon.
Communication/Behavior "Wolves use three main avenues of communication: olfactory (scent), postural (body language) and vocal." -Some things stated below are inputted for the sake of roleplay and are not entirely realistic. These behaviors are italicized.-
Scent Paws: "Because wolves have scent glands between their toes, they leave their personal signature wherever they walk." Urination: Wolves will most commonly urinate to mark pack borders or to mark prey they believe to be theirs.
Vocal "Vocal communication among wolves consists of howls, whines, growls and barks." Howling: Assembling the pack, claiming territory/prey, or in some cases for entertainment. Whining: Showing affection, expressing pain/fear/sadness. Growls: Establish dominance, express warning, or general aggression. Barks: When alarmed, excitement, or during chases.
Body Language:

Diets/Hunting "Wolves usually hunt in packs or sometimes individually. A wolf will nearly always eat what it catches almost completely." "Wolves have large stomachs and can devour 20 – 25 pounds of food at any one feeding time. However, wolves are able to survive without food for up to 2 weeks or even longer if prey is scarce."
Primary Prey - usually hunted by packs and not individuals
- Deer
- Moose
- Bison
- Mountain Goats
- Sheep
- Elk
- Caribou
Secondary Prey - most commonly hunted by those who are alone or when opportunity strikes
- Rabbits
- Snakes
- Mice
- Birds
- Fish
- Beavers
Extras - these are typically only eaten when prey is scarce or as a small snack
- Blueberries
- Ash Berries
- Cowberries
- Apples
- Pears
- Grass (such as when their stomachs are upset)
