I don't wanna live for nothing Silver couldn't stop herself from snickering when he said he'd get her back, "I look forward to the day you can figure out how." She teased him, wondering if he would really do anything or just let sleeping dogs lie, either way she was curious if this could be the start of some kind of very tentative friendship between them. She wouldn't take it to heart if it didn't but it would be a lie if she said she wasn't looking forward to the possibility.
She felt a bit of relief when he didn't react or comment on their brief touch and kept her head forward as they went, her eyes casting downwards in case of more rocks getting in her way.
"Once again I'm right," she couldn't help but tease again despite the serious topic and allowed herself to look at Leocadio, observing the way his eyes seemed to say so much when his voice revealed little to nothing. She did feel relief as he spoke about the Shepherds and their lack of training. "They aren't," she agreed somberly, "and there's hardly time to dedicate to training and even if there was I can't imagine many would take it seriously." She shook her head, even though the pack had its methods for training for their roles she couldn't help but wonder if it was a hinderance to not cross train like some wolves had done. Even though she never wanted to be a warrior she did appreciate the training and underlying backbone it gave her. "I hope that war doesn't come...it would be a lesson soaked in blood." She sighed quietly, wishing these worries would just go away.

[nospaces] [attr="class","letgo"] [attr="class","text"] [attr="class","scroll"] Leo's smile was sly and teasing, "Who knows. That day may not be far off." Only time would tell if he did anything. He wouldn't actively try to settle the score. Leo wasn't that playful. He had no idea how it would happen or what might prompt it, but it would likely linger somewhere in the back of his mind. [break][break] "Is there anything our esteemed Anima doesn't know?" he chuckled lightly, but his mood was somber. The off-white shepherd had been the one to bring up talks of war, but the actual prospect of it wasn't one he took lightly. He knew the risks, but still thought it necessary if things didn't change soon. "Indeed," Leo nodded, "We grow languid in times of peace." The shepherd's eyes followed his tafa as Iro slithered ahead. "With so much to do and learn in the care of the tafa, many may see the extra training as a waste of time." As if to illustrate his point, Iro drew Leo's attention to the base of a bush where the quiet cheap of a chick echoed from the branches. [break][break] The lanky brute walked up to the chick, a robin, and gently nudged the creature. "Fallen from your nest, have you?" he asked softly. With the little bird perched on his nose, he lifted the chick to the nest where its fellows waited hidden in the bush. "Be careful now." Leo turned back to Silver, falling into step beside her. [break][break] "It always is," he said gravely, "And yet we still continue it." Sometimes, it was deemed necessary as Leo saw it now. The lesser of two evils. Others, it was simply a crime and a grave mistake. "With how skilled and diligent our warriors our, few outsiders ever manage to breach as deep into the territory as the Citadel. It lulls the shepherds into believing the feat to be impossible." Even though the shepherd were tasked with guarding the Citadel, the patrols were not as extensive or frequent as those conducted by the pack's warriors. Leo wondered as well how seriously the patrols were taken. As much as he wanted to believe that all the shepherds were as dedicated and focused on their tasks as he was, he knew that wasn't the case.

I don't wanna live for nothing "I'll be waiting for it." Silver smiled back at him, she wouldn't have her guard up all the time, waiting for his rebuttal, but it would be amusing if anything did happen between them. Perhaps, this may be her hopeful side talking, if the two of them became friendly it could show the other Shepherds that Leocadio wasn't that bad. He had his sharp edges but that didn't mean he was entirely bad or needed to be avoided. He was just...different and that didn't mean bad.
"There's a lot I don't know, but the key part is acting like I know everything." Silver said, her smile shrinking. Briefly she was hit with a fuzzy memory of an argument between herself and Onyx, back when they used to speak. She couldn't remember the topic but she did remember the venom to his words and how he cut her down as if she was nothing the one time she had spoken up, calling her a know it all about nothing at all, the words, as trivial as they seemed, cutting into her young heart and leaving a deep scar-and a physical one on her shoulder when he felt he needed to better put her in place.
She had learned from that day to keep her mouth shut, especially around her shadowed brother. Though the conflict had been years ago it had lasting affects on her as an adult, leaving her moments where she felt she had to put up an act. An Anima had expectations and she needed to live up to them, even if it meant acting in a way that had lead to her being so brutally reprimanded in her best. "Peace," she spoke softly, "can be both a blessing and a curse from the effects it has." She agreed with Leocadio, training outside of ones rank was not deemed meaningful, even if it meant safety.
Silver, figuring their talk was about over was ready for inevitable silence, though it could be stated the world was never really silent. Birds chirped, air rustled the leaves, and when it was plentiful water babbled over brooks. Even now a bird chirped for help but Leocadio was the first to respond and render aid, speaking softly and in a way that made Silvers heart soften towards the man as he lifted the bird back into the nest. As he turned to her she tried to move her face into an impassive expression as they continued their walk.
"Yes, our warriors," she said, voice turning stoic, thinking of her brothers. They were decent warriors, like their parents, but there would always be blood she believed and thinking of them made the taste in her mouth turn sour. "We are safe but we all need to remember how dangerous the world can be. Our warriors may be great but as you said, a breach is not impossible."

[nospaces] [attr="class","letgo"] [attr="class","text"] [attr="class","scroll"] Leo laughed light, but he was wary. Pride comes before the fall. Was it really right to pretend? They were simply joking, but leadership by falsehoods was something the off-white brute could not agree on. The shepherd hated lies. No matter what the reason was or who the lie was for, he'd always tell the truth. The truth, no matter how much it hurt, was better than a pretty lie. [break][break] As much as peace was welcome, it came with its burdens. Pups could grow up without fearing war or death. They could grow up with both their parents to guide them. But its languid nature made room for error. Their warriors grew relaxed, and the enemy inevitably made their way in. Leo nodded, "Indeed, it is." His family had been victim to that very curse. [break][break] "It is why we've sealed off our borders," Leo agreed. The Au'Dar had once welcomed outsiders as the other packs had, but after the betrayals, they had closed their borders. The world had proven too dangerous, and its inhabitants unworthy of trust. "We can only hope it doesn't come to that." Again. No one else should have to suffer the same fate his family had. He would make sure of that. [break][break] The rustling of feathers on leaves froze Leo in his steps. "Not here," he cursed. His eyes grew cold as Iro slithered into his shadow and curled around his left forepaw. He hadn't been paying attention. If he had, he would never have come here with Silver. It was too late now. Yevara was here. From behind a bush, the regal figure of a white-naped crane appeared. Her old, broken left wing dangled at her side. The tips of the feathers dragged on the ground. Her eye fixated on him and under her gaze, he felt ten times smaller than he was. Physically, he shrank back. Yevara had been his father's tafa. She'd participated in the battle that night and broken her wing as a result. Even grounded, she still had an unwavering nobility and majesty. Unlike other tafa who'd lost their wolf, Yevara had not passed on. She'd remained to watch over Leo and his siblings. At least, that was the reason Leo thought she still remained. [break][break] Every time he saw her, he was reminded of that night, their failures, and their loss. Her gaze never wavered. Even now, a provocation seemed to appear in her eyes. A summons for something he didn't understand. He couldn't meet her gaze, and his eyes dipped to the broken wing to the dried dirt at the bird's feet. "I'm sorry," he mumbled, "I'm sorry." Yevara was a physical reminder of all they'd lost and how badly they'd failed. How badly he'd failed.

I don't wanna live for nothing Silver remained quiet, contemplating what he said. Her own heart was wistful, full of wanderlust for the great unknown that often made her paws pull her to the borders of the territory in times where she was left free. It was dangerous, she knew that well but even the threat of being seen or encountering an enemy didn't sway her from her adventures when she pretended she was nothing more than a wolf exploring the land...something so simple that she knew in her heart she could never be.
She could only nod her head when he mentioned sealing off their borders. Silver understood the order, why it was in place, but still she thought of the freedom...and what their pack was missing out on from being so cut off. Surely things were happening beyond the forest that they could learn from. Was she truly the only one not driven crazy being stuck in this land with nowhere else to go? It's why the idea of expanding was so enchanting to her but she had to be realistic...knowing that such an idea would not be followed unless absolutely necessary. "We can only hope." She said softly, continuing to walk even with the sound of feathers, a normal sound in their land but when she glanced over, noting an absence of her commanders paws the stopped, looking back to see Leocadio frozen in place and his eyes mirror ice.
The silvery woman followed his stare, gaze landing on the Crane, her chest tightening as realization hit her. The Crane was elegant, even with her broken wing, head held high as she continued on with her life, a sigh that always left her in awe. Silver bowed her head to the bird before slowly turning and taking place at Leocadio's side in silence, unable to comprehend the pain that was working through him but could imagine enough that it made her heart sink and feel as if needles pricked it from every angle, sinking deeper with every apology he uttered.
"Leocadio," she finally spoke, voice soft, "if you are sorry...look into her eyes when you tell her that." It wasn't a reprimand, not even an order, she was gentle in the way she spoke to him, "but..." she trailed off with a little shake of her head, it wasn't her place to give her opinion.

[nospaces] [attr="class","letgo"] [attr="class","text"] [attr="class","scroll"] Despite the grief and pain Yevara caused him, he stubbornly refused to allow any other wolf to care for the tafa. Every day, he would come to this spot with only Iro and his father's ghost as company. Every time, he could only look at the ground as he worked. In the end, his eyes never saw Yevara, only her shadow. For all his bluff and bluster in front of others, in the presence of his father's tafa, he was nothing. [break][break] With his head bowed, he saw and felt Iro tighten around his foot. It was the snake's small attempt to sooth his friend. So deeply immersed in his thoughts was he that he failed to notice when Silver left his side nor did he notice her return. Only when the white fae spoke did his mind return to the present. He raised his head only to stop when his eyes met those of the crane's. His gaze falling back to the ground. Even now, years after, he couldn't tell what those eyes desired. How he wished she would reveal her desires and cease her torment. How he would beg her to speak. How he could not. [break][break] Silver's words were the undeniable truth. If he truly wished to apologize, he had to look at Yevara. The ground was not who he sought to speak to. But he couldn't. The weight of his sins brought him to his knees. "I-I can't," he lamented, turning away from the bird. He couldn't do this. Not with Silver there to see his shame. The first step was agony. At first, he walked. Each step came faster and faster until he was running. Iro clung to his leg as he fled from his shadows. He ran, forgetting about Silver, forgetting about everything. [break][break] He came to stop all too soon. His head hung low as his breath came in ragged gasps despite only traveling a fraction of the distance he normally could. "I'm sorry, Iro," he mumbled to the indignant snake. Having clung to his leg throughout the entire rough trip, the tafa was none to pleased with his companion. But nonetheless, the snake still cared for the shepherd. At the moment, there were more important things than a rough ride.

I don't wanna live for nothing For a moment Silver thought, as Leocadio had lifted his head, that he would be able to speak to the crane but as quickly as his head was up it was back down and his voice came out in such a way that it made Silver's own throat tighten and then...he was gone. The snowy dame stood there in shock, she hadn't expected him to run away, leaving her there. If he had snapped at her and stalked off she probably could have handled it better than she did now, stuck there in place.
"Leocadio..."She said softly, breath on a soft breeze as she stared after the direction he had gone. She was about to turn and go to her den or perhaps look for Wynd when the voice in her head snapped at her, asking if she was really going to abandon him when he ran off. Just because he came off stoic and gruff didn't mean he didn't feel and she, as the Anima, no as an empathetic creature, shouldn't just turn and leave him to be. All those soft traits her brother Onyx had ridiculed her for came to mind, making her jaw clench.
No.
She wasn't going to leave things be and run away from it all. The Anima shook out her fur, as if shaking off her anxieties, and darted after her momentary companion. She wasn't as agile as Leocadio, her frame crashing past the brush as she kept her head up, scanning for him, wondering if he was going to stop...when she finally spotted him and slowed to a stop.
"Leocadio..." His voice came from her again, but her voice wasn't as soft, raising enough for him to hear her as she approached, unsure of how he was going to react to her following him. "Is Iro alright?" She asked, wanting to skirt around what had just happened and finding their talk of the Tafa as good neutral ground...with the exception of certain cranes.

[nospaces] [attr="class","letgo"] [attr="class","text"] [attr="class","scroll"] Iro's indignation was shorter-lived than usual. The snake knew his companion was hurting. The off-white shepherd smiled softly knowing he was forgiven. Bowing, Iro made his way to his usual spot at the base of Leo's neck. With his tafa at his side, he felt a small wave of calm pass over him. Away from the crane, his mind could settle. [break][break] He wasn't sure what he had expected. After that shameless display, he wouldn't have blamed her for leaving him. To be accurate, he'd left her. When her voice reached his ears, his head shot up in surprise, "Silver." For a moment, he simply stared. Why had she come? He'd expected her to leave him to his demons. She had no reason to check on him. It might have been better if she hadn't. Then he could pretend none of it had happened. He could still be the black-heart Leocadio in front of her. [break][break] Leo gave a brisk shake of his head. Straightening, he stood tall and proud just as he had before Yevara's appearance. "He's fine," he said, "Shaken but fine." He'd already shown her more weakness than the Anima ever needed to see. If anything, he could pretend it was all fine. That nothing had transpired. From her question, he was hoping Silver would do the same.

I don't wanna live for nothing Silver stared back at Leo as he stared at her, feeling her throat go a little dry. She turned her attention to Iro, managing to bring herself back under control as she swallowed. "Good...you can off so fast I wasn't sure if he was able to hold on." She spoke gently, looking over the snake once more before looking back to Leo, putting an easy smile on her face.
"Is it safe to assume that you've completed your duties for the day?" She asked, grasping for a neutral topic of conversation. She didn't want to bring up Yevara or anything related to the crane, out of respect for Leo but also because she knew it wasn't her business. Whatever type of relationship that had the potential of forming between herself and the opposing brute was fragile, like a freshly hatched bird, and she didn't want to risk breaking it with careless words.
She heard a rustling behind her, her ears perking up and she glanced back to see Wynd leaving the brush, ambling towards the air with his ever constant scowl, even when he made it to Silver's side, plopping down to sit with a grumble.

[nospaces] [attr="class","letgo"] [attr="class","text"] [attr="class","scroll"] Silver's statement only increased Leo's embarrassment at his actions. The smile the snowy fae gave looked like pity in the shepherd's eyes. It was she was twisting the knife of shame in his belly. His eyes darkened and his ears fell back as he looked away. "He's fine," he repeated sharply. Silver's gentle nature only served to add fuel to the fires of his frustration. He didn't want her pity. He didn't need her pity. He was completely fine as he was. So what if he was an orphan and hated by the family he had left, he was fine was he was. He didn't them, and he didn't others walking around him like he was some delicate flower. [break][break] He turned his eyes back on Silver, speaking stiffly and formally, "I would not think to neglect my duties. I still have a patrol to do." Just because he'd run away didn't mean he was unfit for duty. He could still work. He wasn't so weak. Yevara's presence would not stop him from doing what he had to do. After conversing with her, he'd thought that maybe Silver was different, that maybe he'd misjudged her. But that was a lie. She was no different than the others. Pity for the orphan. Scorn for the one who'd destroyed his family. The one who didn't belong. [break][break] A rustling in the bushes disrupted his thoughts. His eyes fell on Wynd as the badger made his way to his partner's side. His eyes softened seeing the tafa. No matter if they were as grumpy as Wynd or incomprehensible as Iro, they were his one source of comfort. They would never look at him with pity or scorn or walk on eggshells around him. "If you will excuse me," he continued, the sharp edge to his voice gone, "I must get to my patrol." It was better that way. Instead of wallowing in his memories at his den, he could force his mind to focus on his patrol. There would be no ghosts then.

I don't wanna live for nothing The change in his voice nearly made Silver take a step back, not understanding what she could have said or done to make Leocadio's wall slam back up. For a moment, perhaps because of naivety, she had thought that perhaps the two of them could have formed some kind of relationship, but now she realized she had been fooling herself. She felt her throat tighten but it wasn't with the threat of tears. Instead her voice came out void of its softness.
"I was merely inquiring due to the time of day, I doubt that someone like yourself would even contemplate neglecting your duties. Forgive me for assuming." She lifted her head as Wynd looked between the two wolves, a low growl forming in his throat. "Oh hush you." Silver said, her voice gentling in her reprimand.
When Leocadio spoke again she allowed her gaze to slide back over to him, a shadow of hurt looming in them. "And I must tend to my duties. Forgive me for distracting you." She told him, turning away, her tail sweeping behind her.
"Think what you must about me, about the shepherds Leocadio, but I know what I think of you and there is not negativity there. Know that I have faith in your work, your skills and abilities, but also know that I do not look down upon you, I am thankful for your work and existence in our pack." She didn't wait for a response before making her way back the way she had come.
For a moment Wynd sat there, staring at Leocadio with a sneer wrinkling his nose. He may not have understood what was happening but he knew how his partner felt and he did not appreciate the one who had caused it. The badger growled once more before getting up, bounding after Silver.

[nospaces] [attr="class","letgo"] [attr="class","text"] [attr="class","scroll"] Leo's ears fell back and his eyes narrowed at Silver's formal response. He did not deign a reply. His silence speaking for him. As Wynd's growl laced the air, his eyes fell on the tafa with the same coldness he directed at his packmates. If it had been a wolf, he would have returned the greeting with his own growl and bared teeth, but given it was the honorable tafa, he accepted the warning as a reminder of his failings. [break][break] He had no words to answer Silver with. Only grey eyes devoid of warmth that followed her retreating back. As grandly as she spoke, he saw them as nothing more than empty words to appease a cold heart. They failed to land where they might resonate. He dipped into a slight bow as Silver left. His words were spoken merely as a formality, "May your day be well." There was no heart in them. [break][break] On another day, in another moment, Iro would not have accepted Wynd's behavior. Leo might not have been willing to reprimand the Anima's tafa, but Iro was not of the same sentiment. On another day, the snake would have shown just as much ferocity. But today, the tafa chose to remain on his wolf's back. What his wolf needed now was not his defense but his comfort. With Silver gone, Leo left as well, a dark cloud hanging heavy over his head.
