The white brute strolled along the grounds of the Citadel. Between his feet, his tafa slithered to and fro. The morning sun filtered through the canopy to create a dappled mosaic of light across the forest floor. The Shepherd Garde was on patrol this fine morning. Despite the usurping of the throne and abrupt emergency meeting, life continued on as normal for the brute. Leocadio's only loyalty was with the tafa and his family. All others were secondary and unnecessary. Iro took the lead and slithered off into the brush. "What do you have there, my friend?" he spoke warmly as he walked after his companion. He was greeted by a gaggle of young rabbits upon poking his head through the leaves. Iro slowly gathering up the loose bunnies. Leo looked upon them with more kindness than he did his fellow wolf. "Get going now," he murmured, gently nudging the kits away. They were far too close to the Citadel's boundaries for their age.
[break][break]
Iro climbed up his wolf's leg and settled himself around Leo's neck. With the snake comfortable, Leo set off at a slow trot behind the bunnies. He would escort them to a safer location and make sure they were safe at home before leaving them. For a wolf known as black-hearted, he was a dedicated and good Shepherd. That fact was undeniable no matter how much others sneered. His family were the only ones that were on his side. Though Malana thought the rumors were earned, she was still family. He would have to pay a visit to Iscan after he finished his morning rounds. Leo never went a day without saying good morning to his little brother.
[break][break]
Leo soon spotted a rabbit den among the grasses as they neared the center of the Citadel. The area bustled with activity as the other Shepherds attended to their duties. Quite a few threw dirty looks his way as he passed. He was the snake in the grass. The one they believed didn't deserve his role. Leo ignored them all. None of them mattered after all. Each of the rabbit kits darted into the hollow as they made it home. Leo smiled, an odd look for the typically icy brute. Trotting off a ways, he picked up some fresh grasses from the feed pile and deposited the small bundle in front of the den's entrance. The little rabbits nibbling bit by bit into the pile. Yes, today was just like any other.

I don't wanna live for nothing As always Silver was making her rounds through the Citadel with Wynd trudging next to her. Wynd was always grumpy, it was no surprise to anyone who knew of him, but he was even grumpier now, wanting to sleep but instead he walked along with his wolf, grumbling as he pushed through the grasses, making a small smile grow on the Anima's lips. After Akala's dismantling of the pack hierarchy Silver had tried to busy herself with the care of the Tafa, keeping her head down while she held hope that order would be restored. Such a feat left a sour taste in her mouth, this wasn't how things were meant to be. At one point she had dreamt of change but her vision of it didn't include murder and a rule of anger, rather opening to the outside world. She loved her home but it was starting to feel more like a prison than a place to lay her head and live out her life.
The duo walked along, Silver dipping her head to any other Shepherds they stumbled upon. She liked to think she had a good relationship with most, thinking of them as a team that needed each other but there were always a few that seemed to remain distant, one of those very wolves catching her attention, her ears just barely catching his voice, the sound drawing her near. She caught sight of Leocadia as he approached a rabbit den, making her eyebrow raise until she saw movement at his feet and rabbit kits launched themselves into the safety of their home. She softened a little as she watched him lay grasses in front of the rabbits home. This scene was something that made her remember the importance of Shepherds, even ones that many believed didn't belong.
Silver didn't know what to think of Leocadio but she did believe that he belonged in his role, if he didn't he wouldn't be doing something such as this. Her paws moved before she could think, bringing her towards Leocadio which, of course, made her pass the Shepherds who were given him dirty looks. She cleared her throat as she passed, lifting her head to cast them with a disapproving look. Whether they all got along or not she did not condone rudeness amongst the Shepherds.
She came to a stop a few feet away from the brute with the black heart, Wynd drawing up between her front legs. "They wandered too far from home?" She asked with a tilt of her head.

Leo's ears fell back and his smile dropped when the voice of the pack's esteemed Anima reached his ears. Something about the fae rubbed him the wrong way. Her mannerisms and actions all seemed farcical to him. Iro dropped from his neck to coil between his front paws. The snake watched Wynd with his expressionless face. Leo controlled his own expression, drawing back into a more neutral look though his eyes still gleamed with ice. He raised his head, addressing the Anima with a dismissing calm, "As they always do." The trio had been troublemakers from the moment they could walk. They would make fine tafa someday.
[break][break]
His smile was polite but held a air of distaste, "To what do I owe the pleasure of being visited by our esteemed Anima?" He didn't welcome this visit any more than he would one by another. His fellow shepherds didn't like him. His pack didn't either. That was fine with him. All he needed was his family and his tafa. All others were mere accessories.
[break][break]
"If you don't mind," Leo said, flicking his tail and lowering his head, "Shall we walk and talk? I have business to attend to." He waited for her answer, but started to walk anyways. Iro slithered along beside him as he checked each of the burrows. The first had all of its residents nestled warm inside. The second though was missing a resident. Leo frowned and searched the surrounding area for the absent rabbit. A smile of relief crossing his features upon spotting it.

I don't wanna live for nothing The brutes reaction was one that shouldn't have bothered her but her insides flinched from the way he regarded her. She knew about Leocadoi's reputation, the distaste everyone had for him was not lost on her nor was the reason behind it. Leocadio seemed to put efford into being emotionally unappealing to everyone and though Silver didn't hold him in high regard emotionally, but he was a fine Shepherd and she respected him in that way and tried to treat him as she treated everyone else. Even when rubbed the wrong way she tried to bite her tongue and remain neutral outwardly. She knew what it was like to be excluded and intentionally made to feel like she didn't fit it. That had been her entire childhood and with the way Leocadio seemed to look at her as if he could freeze her with his gaze she was reminded of how worthlessly she had been treated until reaching her rank. By then her family had alienated her to the point that she held little to no ties with them but even then they still had the power to make her feel small and it seemed that Leocadio could do the same. For a moment it was like she was looking into the face of her brother Onyx, their expressions almost identical. She turned her attention to Iro as Wynd stared down at the reptile with his own impassiveness but she could see a sneer growing on his maw. She nudged the Tafa with her paw and the badger huffed.
She almost retorted to him that her presence didn't seem to be a pleasure but held her tongue, reminding herself of her ideals. "Just a coincidence," she said airily, "I happened to see and wanted to stop by for a moment." That was true enough, she liked to check in with the Shepherds occasionally and Leocadio happened to be the first one she spotted. She was about to excuse herself when Leocadio continued, making her tilt her head as he started to walk. She shared a look with Wynd before following after the brute, Wynd moving from between her legs and trudging at her side as she fell into step with Leocadio. "We might as well, I need to continue my walk through Citadel as it is." She said, "tell me, what is your opinion on how our care is for the Tafa?"

Veiled distaste was the best way to characterize the Shepherd's attitude toward everyone, the Anima especially. His eyes narrowed at Silver's response to his inquiry on the sudden visit, a cackling laugh hidden behind an icy demeanor, "Oh, really?" It might have been true, but not an inch of Leo believed it to be so. A simple visit to the Shepherd's most hated was an easy cover. It was all nothing but demure smiles hiding vile insults. "I'm honored," he remarked, mockingly. Managing the shepherds might have been the Anima's responsibility, but Leo would much rather she left him be.
[break][break]
"Is that so?" he answered absently to the Anima's statement of continuing her walk. He'd have much rather she do it alone. The silver-grey brute may have invited her to join him, but that offer did not mean she could accept. If there had been no eyes, he'd have run her off without a second thought. He look up from his task suddenly, surprised at the Anima's inquiry. Leo smirked, "Do you want an honest answer or the desired one?" Moving on from the rabbits, he turned his eyes skyward. Searching the trees, he noted each of the nests. Most of the nests weren't at levels where the wolves could easily see their contents. But the shepherds had their ways to protect their flock. Rising up on his hind legs, he put a paw on the tree trunk, and he poked his nose as close as possible to the nest. His nose picked up the right number of occupants, but, just to make sure, he let out a soft bark. In response, the chicks began chirping and poked their heads over the top. Leo smiled softly. All of the chicks were accounted for.
[break][break]
Turning his attention back to Silver, his demeanor was as chilly as always. The kindly Leocadio that greeted the chicks never turned that same smile on his fellow packmates. "Apologies Anima for interrupting our talks," he stated roughly. His words held not an ounce of truth. "If I were to speak truthfully, I would call it grossly inadequate." He walked along, continuing his survey. "The drought has left us unable to adequately care for our charges. Compared to past seasons, our flock is down. Fewer births occurred and many are lacking strength. At this rate, I worry how many will survive the winter." Leocadio cared little for pleasing others nor did he care for another's emotions. His reprimands were always sharp and unrelenting. If there was one thing he was honest about, it was his distaste for others.

I don't wanna live for nothing Silver walked along with Leocadio, but kept a comfortable distance between them, she didn't want to change their fur touching, not used to physical touch herself thanks to her cold upbringing where touch was only allowed during combat training and affection was far and few between unless the parents had been pleased. Pleasing her parents had never been her strong suit except for when she had been chosen for her rank. It always came back to that, they hadn't cared about her until then but by then it had been too late and her heart had grown too cold to let them back in. Her cold heart, hidden under a gentle smile was something that was a secret that only she knew. She was seen as gentle, kind, caring and sweet and that was true but deep down a monster lurked, whispering that at any minute she could snap. She was born a warrior and raised as one, it was in her blood and would never leave her. It was just lying in wait for the right moment to take on her opponent by surprise. Her eyebrow raised when he said he was honored, the mockery piercing her pelt but bouncing off the wall built around her feelings. "Honored? What a...perfect choice of words." She replied.
Wynd huffed below her, ducking from under her legs and ambling into the brush without a glance backwards at the odd pair, not interested in their work and more interested in finding some kind of snack.
"What is the point of an answer if it isn't honest?" Silver told Leocadia, her eyes, like his traveling up to the branches of the trees, seeing a few birds flit about. Her answer was careful, curated, one that others would expect to hear from her.
Her gaze lingered on a few but then turned to Leocadia as he looked towards a nest and for a moment she saw a soft smile. She knew of the brutes reputation, she had seen him act firsthand like this before but as always he was good at his job and in those moments she got to see a different side of him and that's what she liked about her position. Sometimes she was able to slip around her packmates and observe them, seeing the expressions they thought no one else would and the actions they thought were secret. It was amusing and at the same time it revealed who the other was underneath for the briefest of moments. the smile was gone, replaced by ice and roughness that the Anima was familiar with. Her ears twitched at his apology, her soft face coming off as believing but she knew better than to think he meant it at all.
She remained quiet as he spoke, head tilting ever so slightly. "What you say it true," she agreed, "but how do you suspect we remedy the situation?" She asked, it wasn't like she hadn't been thinking of solutions, she wanted to hear what he had to say, like her other Shepherds but she knew Leocadio would be blunt with her unlike the others who seemed to tread around her lightly instead of throwing out the truth.

[nospaces] [attr="class","letgo"] [attr="class","text"] [attr="class","scroll"] Leo chuckled humorlessly, "I do consider myself quite the wordsmith." A jest thought it might have been, his eyes did not tell the same story, "Is that not how it should be, esteemed Anima?" He had no desire to serve an Anima that did not believe in their role. The Centurion may be the head of the Au'Dar, but the Anima was the heart. With their head replaced, if the heart faltered, what would become of the pack? Leo lived to serve the tafa. He would not support any that would endanger them. Even if that meant turning his fangs on their leaders. [break][break] The dirty silver brute laughed, jaded and cold, "Not everyone wishes to hear the truth. Nor is it always welcome." The fact that Leo refused to sugarcoat or paint things in pretty colors landed him on the wrong side of a few wolves. Honesty wasn't always the best quality. The truth wasn't always pleasant or accepted. No matter what the Anima's answer would have been, Leocadio had no plans to say anything but his honest opinion. If it got him in hot water, that was fine with him. [break][break] His eyes flashed darkly. "It is not our way..." It was the way of the barbaric Sanzin, but he could think of no other. They had to do everything possible to protect the tafa. "We may find more resources from ... other areas," he answered, his eyes turned away. As much as he loathed others, even he condemned the idea of theft. The Au'Dar's home had long provided everything they required and more. To abandon it and desecrate another land seemed the height of folly. "The neutral lands may be of use. And if not..." he trailed off, leaving the words unspoken. The Au'Dar did not step foot outside their forest except for the annual Three Packs Meeting. But with the way things were headed, the need may yet arise.

I don't wanna live for nothing A slight smile tugged at the Anima's maw, for a moment she almost believed that he may have been joking with her, until she snuck a look at his face, the expression being replaced with one of impassiveness as he continued. Something in the way he spoke now made irritation form in a slow burn on the back of her neck but she but her tongue. "There is no point in speaking if it is not the truth." she finally chose to respond, "at least that is how I view it. Time is wasted when it comes to twisting the words we use. Especially when it comes to tending to our charges." Her gaze turned upwards at the tree branches, a few songs of birds drifting down to them.
Even with the songs of the birds above them Silver didn't allow herself to relax as she listened to Leocadio spoke though his words made her come to a stop as she started to peace together what he was hinting at, "what you're saying sounds dangerous Leocadio," she said but felt it was useless, they did need more resources, what they had now was being spread thin but to move out into the neutral lands? Her soul did ache for leaving the forest of the Au'Dar but that didn't mean she wanted to do so in a way that may provoke ire with other packs. "The neutral lands..." she repeated, thinking of the stretch that separated them from the other packs, it woud be much too risky but then her mind went to the other end of the pack grounds, it was a tempting thought to expand but to do so...she shook her head, "tensions are running high across the land, any movements may insight a battle where we aren't guarantied to win...and then what? We could experiences losses with nothing to show for." With how things were going how long could they manage? She didn't want to overthink it and jump to conclusions but...if things kept going the way they seemed to be headed the pack may not have much of a choice, especially with their new Centurion.

[nospaces] [attr="class","letgo"] [attr="class","text"] [attr="class","scroll"] Leo chuckled, trotting along, "I agree, dear Anima. If only everyone thought that way." He'd receive less backlash for 'running his mouth' as they liked say. But an unfortunately large number preferred to remain in the dark about the unpleasant than face the harsh truth. What good were platitudes when the lives of their beloved tafa were at stake? Pretending everything was roses and sunshine would only cause their problems to worsen as they went unaddressed. Leo's eyes rolled in exasperation. Woefully, there were fools than those with sense. [break][break] Moving on, Iro slithered through the grass in pursuit of the unseen. Following along, Leo smiled upon seeing what await on the other side; summer's messengers. A garter snake awaited the duo of wolves. Iro and the garter squaring off for a moment before Leo nudged Iro along. Touching his nose to the garter's in greeting, the snake stayed for only a heartbeat before slithering off. Leo watched it go with a touch of fondness. The snakes had always been, in Leo's experience, more independent and solitary than the other tafa species. Fitting that his own tafa was one. [break][break] Silver's words came as something of a harsh reminder. The off-white shepherd looked away from Silver with something akin to guilt, though such an emotion was foreign to black-hearted brute, "Isn't anything worth doing dangerous?" Dangerous or not, they had to do whatever they could to ensure the tafa and, by extension, the pack's survival. A battle they weren't guaranteed to win was right, but the other packs knew their history. The Au'Dar had always been formidable in battle. "Our warriors are strong. I have every faith in them." With Malana and Nuala- He stopped himself before his thoughts went further. Malana was a strong warrior, one that could easily defend their home. Nuala was a traitor who had abandoned family and pack. He could not count on her, especially since she had disappeared on them as their mother had. "They would never allow our lands to be breached."

I don't wanna live for nothing Silver was taken aback from Leocadio's reaction when he agreed with her, she hadn't thought he would disagree but she also hadn't thought he would agree with her either, it just seemed like his personality. "But I guess there's something good about these different personalities in the world, makes things interesting." Her eyes rolled to the sky as she spoke, a twinge of sarcasm in her voice. It would be boring if everyone thought the same, but it did make things difficult when it came to making decisions and getting along. Her gaze did trail down to the snake slithering before them, a slight smile on the corners of her lips as she watched him focused on something she couldn't see until a garter snake peered out at them. She watched as Leocadio interact with the reptiles, head tilting slightly. Even though she was the Anima and loved the Tafa, she had to admit that she preferred the small mammals over the reptiles, but she would treat all as equal as possible. As it should be in her eyes.
Again she was taken by surprise from Leocadio's reaction, she had been ready for him to snap at her, say something cruel, tell her that she was too busy in her own world to be faced with the facts, which was something her oldest brother, Onyx, would tell her throughout their shared childhood. She paused for a moment, coming to a stop as she considered his question, thinking of her few and far between walks that took her farther and farther from the pack grounds each time, "I suppose...you do have a point," she admitted before starting to walk again, "but the dangers do need to be weighed with the outcomes and the decision if it worth it," were her wanderings worth it? Her brain said no but her heart whispered for her to explore the unknown.
"I have faith in our warriors as well," she agreed, even though she had fragmented relationships with her brothers, she would trust them in battle, "I believe in them to keep our lands fortified, but going out to expand our territory? We would be outnumbered..." she shuddered at the thought of the possible spilled blood that would come of it and not all of it was wolf. "If we ever had to expand it would be best to look at land away from the other packs, where they can't see us or press their boundaries against ours. That way seems less...bloody."

[nospaces] [attr="class","letgo"] [attr="class","text"] [attr="class","scroll"] Leo smiled slyly, a whisp of a laugh in his eyes, "Maybe too interesting." It was those opposing personalities that led to conflict. Because ideals clashed and anger raged, lives were lost and lives were changed for better or worse. If his family had all thought the same, would things have been different? Would Malana still hate him? Would Iscan still be his dear brother? Would he still hate Nuala? ... Would they have been able to save their parents? It was no use thinking about theocraticals. The past was past. None of it could be changed no matter how much he wanted to. [break][break] His gaze slid to the Anima, eyes shadowed, "I agree, but we cannot predict the future, my Anima. Nor can we ever advance without taking risks." Theirs may not have been a history of much bloodshed compared to their barbaric neighbors, but it was one of isolation. They had maintained their way of life thus far by barring all outside interference. The Vertok had rolled over for their enemies and essentially been exiled to the barren mountains. He would not allow his pack to face the same fate. They may be strong now, but what of the future if things remained as they were? [break][break] The Anima's words were true. The other pack's numbers were hard to know with how rarely the Au'Dar made contact with the Sanzin and the Vertok. Victory was far from assured. "That would be ideal," he murmured, gaze downcast. "But," he turned his eyes skyward, towards the vast mountains, "Where else can we go? Stone walls encase us on all sides but to the east. Our founder confines us as much as he protects us." The only place they could turn to was the neutral lands. No pass through the mountains had been found yet, at least, not by their wolves. It seemed inevitable that blood would be shed.

I don't wanna live for nothing The smile on Leocadio's face took Silver by surprise but she didn't let the expression show on her face though she had expected such a look would make the formers face shatter. "Well...what would be better: a world that's too interesting or one that's bland where everyone's the same?" She questioned, knowing that despite the battles it caused, she would want a world where colorful personalities were allowed to roam free.
A more familiar expression came onto the males face, setting her more at ease, which was funny in a way, to be more comfortable with such a dark expression over a lighter one. She considered what he had to say about advancing and risks, nose scrunching slightly. She hated to admit that he did have a point. "Well, only time will tell, especially with our new Centurion." She spoke with a neutral tone that she hoped did enough to keep the distain hidden. Silver didn't believe she would ever outwardly oppose Akala but that didn't mean she wanted her in power. Something about their new lead, besides how she got her place, didn't sit right with her and at times it seemed to push her closer to the want to leave this land and who she was all together.
"He confines us as far as we know," she pointed out, "the mountains protect us but they can't be fully impenetrable..." She trailed off, her eyes turning to the forest floor as well, "if there was a war...you would fight then?"

[nospaces] [attr="class","letgo"] [attr="class","text"] [attr="class","scroll"] The question made Leo think. A world where they were all the same seemed like it would be nice and orderly. No one would take issue with anyone. But stillness of it all would mean stagnation. It was what Leo had just warned against. A world without progress was not what he desired. He laughed, icy grin and all, "You got me, dear Anima. Even if it's too interesting, it's better than nothing at all." A world like that seemed like a prison to live in. [break][break] "Our new Centurion," his smile was all teeth. Akala felt like a wind of change compared to their policies before. The fae seemed the type to bring the Au'Dar to a new era. One where they no longer hid in their forest. The umbral she-wolf may hold the strength to protect the tafa and all the Au'Dar held dear. Leo approved of her, but not all did. He turned a sidelong gaze on the Anima. Her tone conveyed nothing of her thoughts on the matter. He wouldn't turn on the Anima. She was the pack's heart. But if the heart and head clashed, what would happen? The thought was dangerous. They had no time nor resources for a civil war. "Only time will tell, indeed," he repeated, opting to avoid the subject for the time being. [break][break] The off-white shepherd grunted with disgust, "They mustn't be. Considering all the loners that make it in." Iro slithered back to his partner, passing between two rocks on his way. The viper falling into step next to his wolf. Leo didn't have a particularly awful opinion of foreigners, but he didn't like them either. They had no respect for the tafa. Leo stopped in his tracks at Silver's question. His ears fell back ever so slightly and his eyes turned away from the Anima. A pause hung in the air following Silver's question, "It is my duty," he said matter-of-factly, continuing his walk. He wasn't a star fighter. Against an experienced and trained warrior, he likely wouldn't come out on top. "I must protect the tafa." They were, above all, what mattered most.

I don't wanna live for nothing "I got you?" Silver mused, looking at him thoughtfully, a smile teasing on the corners of her lips, "I'll make sure to remember that. Silver one, Leocadio zero." She teased him, not intending to keep score but she wanted to prod him for a reaction.
Her smile faded back into a neutral expression when the topic was brough to the Centurion. She was curious what, if anything Leocadio would say about their Akala, the name making a bitter taste rise in her maw. There were some things the new Centurion spoke about that caught her attention, but she couldn't deny the slimy feeling the crept up her spine when she remembered the day of the take over, because essentially that is what it was. Had the pack really grown stagnant? Perhaps, but at the same time was the change worth the danger? She almost let loose a sigh of relief when Leocadio seemed to take on a neutral stance as well, voiding from the topic.
When he started walking again her own paws carried her along by his side, she side stepped the rocks that Iro had slid between, the move causing her should to just, ever so slightly, brush against Leo's, an act that she chose to ignore even though the proximity made her suddenly aware of every movement and breath she took. "Your duty," she repeated, dipping her head, "yes it is, but your dedication is worthy," she said, "I know it is expected of the Shepherds to protect the Tafa but...I don't see many being ready to battle if one came to it...though I hope I am wrong."

[nospaces] [attr="class","letgo"] [attr="class","text"] [attr="class","scroll"] The gleam in his eyes was wicked, "I'll get you back." Though how that would happen is a question for the future. He wasn't a jokester, and he wasn't a hero. There was half a chance he'd forget this teasing debt. Usually, he would. Usually, he wouldn't be playing along. But he had, and he had a feeling he'd remember this. [break][break] He didn't let the surprise show on his face when he felt the Anima brush against him. The only thing that showed he noticed was a flick of his ear and the drifting of his eyes away from Silver. Usually, wolves kept their distance from him. It was like he had some kind of disease or curse. One they didn't want to risk catching by getting close to him. The only ones to close the distance had been his family, and even then, an invisible wall still remained. Only his brother had none of that. [break][break] Leo's eyes narrowed, but a hidden sorrow filled them in place of anger. If the shepherds went to war, against true warriors, they were unlikely to survive, especially those without tafa built for battle. Leo had Iro, but even his venom wasn't deadly. Painful maybe, but a wolf wouldn't die from his bite. "You're right," he said, spiritless, "We may have received combat training, but it was no where near the level of our warriors." His eyes trailed the movements of faraway shepherds. "Most have never seen combat. They aren't ready for war." Even so, he knew that each and every one would give their lives to protect the tafa and the pack. It was the one thing they all agreed upon. This place was their home. They would never give it up.
