[googlefont="Caveat"]  NAVI The sky was already in the beginning stages of transformation, shifting subtly from the soft turquoise of day to the warm variants of honey and amber of sunset. Though a gentle breeze drifted on through the trees, carrying the whispers of long lost voices in its swirls, it found that all it had to reach for were what remained of dried tan grasses and wilting green leaves. In these times, the valley was unforgiving, even to itself. But, while the wind did not save the dead and dying flora, it did provide the slightest relief for the creatures who wandered the dry lands.
She had always enjoyed this feeling, the wind shuffling through her fur just enough to send a chill down her spine. And with the air so warm around her, the small wave of cool was welcomed. And luckily for her, she had found the perfect place to bask in it while also in turn watching as the presumed source of the drought slowly fell from the sky. One always had to wonder exactly how trees singled out in a whole forest came to be. If they were chosen, if they were special, or if they had just been stronger than those who had once tried to grow in their presence. With this tree, the latter seemed the most plausible. With a wide and strong base, as well as thick branches that grew, expanded, twisted, and turned in any direction it pleased, this tree was almost asking to be used as a lookout spot. And, fortunately for the one who used it as such, many branches hung low as well, practically a perfect staircase into the heightier portions of branches. And laying atop one of these branches, both blending in and standing out against the dried green and rough brown background, was a wolf.
A warm coat of autumn colors, nearly perfectly resembling a cluster of transformed fall leaves, Navi couldn’t help but stare off into the far distance at the sky that was beginning to match her own fur. Her legs dangled over either side of the sturdy branch, her fluffy tail swishing back and forth over each side of the branch. Even though the sun had not yet set, nor was night setting in just yet, the wolfess felt the need to seek out her shelter for the night early.
She had been walking, or at times trotting, nonstop for the last few days, stopping for what she could of drinks and occasionally a small hunt. It had been….a week? Around a week since she had descended the mountain into this new valley. The first couple days had been…rough…silent. It wasn’t often that Navi found herself upset for longer than even a few minutes. Multiple days? It was a feat, though not a positive one. Thankfully, said mood had faded, allowing her to return to what she could of her normal self.
It was still there, the lingering ache. Somehow, if her thoughts were correct, she doubted it would disappear any time soon. All she could really do now was…keep going.
She pulled a smile onto her face, sage-green gaze unwavering from the changing colors in the sky. Though she always enjoyed watching the unreachable place above as it changed into the warmest tones it could, she couldn’t help but wait eagerly for what came after. No matter how much she could try, she would never get tired of staring up at the stars, looking for all the shapes that her family would show her when she was little. The stars took her home.
A waft of something different floated in on the wind, though as far as she was concerned, as long as she was right anyway, this wasn’t something to worry about. Hopefully.
Her eyes pulled away from the sky and looked below, spotting movement in the shrubbery. Warm colors of varying shades came into view, as did fur draped over a familiar shape. Not familiar personally, but the familiar shape that applied to most canines. In this case, another wolf.
She didn’t actually recognize this wolf; it wasn’t as if she would recognize any wolf who came walking through the woods to her location anyway. From what she could tell from her height advantage, it was….a male? Maybe? It was hard to tell. All that mattered was that it was another wolf. A smile crossed over her features as she peered down over one side of the branch.
“You here to do some tree-climbin’ too? There’s an awfully nice view up here.” Her voice was light and welcoming towards the approaching stranger below, though she didn’t consider whether or not they would actually see her. She probably did look like a cluster of leaves in the tree, or at least she would have if the leaves around her were actually orange. Then again, the plants in the area weren’t doing too great. But also it was harder to kill a whole forest….there were too many factors. Either she looked like leaves or she didn’t. Whichever came first. Loner Female 847 | Jay | Notes |

There was no reason to leave its shady shelter, for he had spent his time mostly lounging, only exerting what energy was pivotal to securing a hare or two. He was content with what he had, taking far more joy in spending his days amidst the sea of trees. It was nostalgic—the only thing that lacked was the cool, crisp mountain air and a distant whisper of a mighty waterfall. Dante smiled softly at the thought as he laid on his back under a looming tree, tucked comfortably away in the shade but basked in the glimpses of sunlight that peeked in through the canopy. This was how he had been all day; unperturbed by the grip of hunger and strangely unbothered by his solitude. In actuality, he was far from alone, surrounded by the greatest company: nature. The trees, the chirping birds, and the pitter-patter of small woodland creatures nearby; all around him, they flourished.[break][break] Dante had dozed off, uncertain for how long, but when he awoke the sun was beginning to set. He rolled onto his belly, now more attentive to his surroundings. The forest activity was waning, telling him that many were wrapping up their activities for the day. He heeded them, rising to his feet, figuring he would need to find a nice spot to hunker down for the night as well. So on he began, his russet eyes trained on the ground.[break][break] He continued for a while, in no real hurry, passing under the sparse canopy, enjoying the gentle warm touch on his back and sides given by the descending sun. Dusk was by far more tolerable, especially now that the season was on the cusp of change. From summer to autumn—his heart fluttered—he would get to see the night sky in all its magnified glory again. It was always at its brightest and most ethereal during autumn and winter, and it would be the first time he would experience it on his own, not in the company of his tribe. Regardless, Dante would continue to honor their traditions during this time, for while he was not a member in any official capacity anymore, he remained an Alhayan at heart.[break][break] Dante was absorbed in his thoughts, and though he acknowledged the flashing red sign of a scent that indicated another wolf, he politely ignored it. Someone else was nearby but he wasn’t one to make a scene out of it; they weren’t bothering him so who was he to bother them. But, the more steps forward he took the brighter that sign became. He finally perked up, looking around. The scent was almost palpable, he should be practically on top of this individual but… there was nobody, at least, no one he could see. Had he made too much noise accidentally, and scared them off? It was painfully fresh. His heart sunk at the idea.[break][break] Just as Dante was about to move on, the feeling hit him like a hoof—the skin-prickling feeling of being watched. He stopped. He didn’t feel imminent danger but it wasn’t like his stalker was showing themselves. He smiled to himself; he could play this game.[break][break] “You here to do some tree-climbin’ too? There’s an awfully nice view up here.”[break][break] Dante froze. Well, so much for that game. The voice was feminine but as if it were coming from the forest around him. Acting upon his hunch, though, he looked up to see a peculiar-looking tree with twisting limbs and colorful leaves. He couldn’t see anything at first but instinct kicked in and he took a few steps back, eyes still on the tree. He caught the glimpse of pale paws hanging over a specific branch, then the shaded sage-green eyes that peered at him. Bingo.[break][break] Dante smiled upon seeing the female perched in the tree. How quaint. He found her comment even more so. “Why, so the tree folk are real, huh. I must be special to have been graced by one.” he laughed lightheartedly, clearly amused by the situation. Her tone was welcoming which prompted him to return the gesture of friendliness. “You have made quite the throne up there, yeah?” he added, also slightly impressed at how she managed to climb a tree. “But alas, I fear I have all but the aptitude to claim one of my own,” he motioned towards one of the misshapen branches. “You see, I’m somewhat clumsy.” There was a faux self-deprecating undertone in his voice, one that implied playfulness and an invitation to poke fun should the woman notice it and act upon it. [googlefont="Caveat"] NAVI The brute below had taken a moment to spot her, but once he did, from where she perched she could vaguely spot a smile cross his maw. And, with the kind voice that followed, it seemed he was friendly. She didn’t consider it, but she was lucky for that, though his comment was peculiar. Blinking a couple times, her eyes crossed over what she could see of herself.
“Huh. I didn’t think anyone would know of my kind all the way out here. Official ambassador of the tree-folk, at your service, dear sir.” Within the grand tree, the auburn she-wolf bent her paw and leg sideways under her perch, bowing her head for a moment with a smile.
As she lifted her head again, she took a moment to look over the multi-colored male beneath her, eyes blinking every few moments as she examined him. From what she could see from her vantage point, this guy was covered in fur of varying shades of orange, tan, brown, and a creamish color, which reminded her quite a bit of her own coloring. Though his markings were definitely different from her’s, she did see some similarities, like a darker face, light underfur, and darker tails. Then again, those were fur traits lots of wolves had. Still, she surprisingly didn’t meet too many wolves who had similar fall-coloring. On top of that, it was hard to really judge his general size and height, but she could only assume from here that he was around her size, maybe a little smaller or a little bigger. One thing she could see for sure of him was the pair of deep dark orange eyes that peered up at her, ones that held a familiar gleem.
She chuckled at his throne comment, swirling her tail behind her. “Any good ambassador needs a place to chill out after arrivin’ to any new place.” Her eyes scanned the tree she laid upon for a moment, glancing between the many branches, the base, and the thin-hanging leaves around her. “A throne, though? Nah, I don’t think so. Just a perch for the night.”
Adjusting herself and pulling her paws back onto the branch, she pushed her back end up and lifted her tail, reaching her front legs as far forward as she could in a stretch. She made a groaning sound as she did, sighing at the end as she brought herself to a standing position. It was then that he happened to look over, her gaze following his to a rather unfortunately shaped branch near the bottom of the tree. She stifled a laugh.
“If that is where you started, then I think I found your first issue.” A toothy grin pulled at her maw as she shook her head, rotating herself the other direction on the branch. With calculated movements, she leaped down to another branch not too far lower from the one she was on initially, doing the same action a few times until she was on the opposite side of the tree and lower to the ground, about one or two branches away from where the brute stood. Upon landing on the thick branch, paws mostly pulled together, she got the chance to look him over more. He wasn’t huge by any means, but he also wasn’t small. Well-toned was perhaps the better descriptor for what she thought him to be, and height wise he didn’t appear much different than her, though that could only be accurately judged by approaching him. Though, she was pretty content in her tree for now.
“So, you have ‘all but’ the aptitude to climb trees. In that case, then what do you have the aptitude for?” She took a second to not-so-subtly glance along the side of him, peering at his fur texture from a distance. He seemed pretty smooth-pelted, though she did take note of the more scruffy and spiky mane he had going on around his neck.
“Judgin’ by what I see, I’m gonna assume that being a porcupine is one of those aptitudes you have. It seems I’m bein’ graced by the presence of a special being too,” she shot another toothy grin his direction, almost combined with a tiny smirk of playfulness. He was amused at the woman’s remark, but pleasantly surprised to have found someone who could share in his humor. She spoke again per his throne comment, and just as she did, his eyes examined the peculiar tree in which she laid. He had seen his fair share of trees in his lifetime but he had yet to happen across one as woven as this one. It sparked both excitement and curiosity in him, prompting him to want to get a closer look, but before he could step forward the woman’s voice rang out again. Dante’s eyes darted up to meet her. Just a perch, huh? He smiled cheekily, shrugging his shoulders, “It can be one with enough imagination.”[break][break] Dante followed her eyes again down to one of the branches he mentioned earlier, unable to keep a straight face at her response. Indeed, she had a point. He heard rustling coming from above before sensing movement and as he looked up he saw the woman hopping from branch to branch, coming closer. His face perfectly betrayed his feeling of respect as he watched her. “You’re quite deft,” he pointed out; it was an obvious observation, but as far as he was concerned she was doing a far better job than he ever could.[break][break] Suddenly she asked what he did have the aptitude for. Dante was caught off guard a bit, and judging from the gentle tilt of his head, he didn’t have an immediate answer — which was fine, because she sort of answered for him. A porcupine, that was new. Another smile pulled at his lips, one more wry and toothless, but no less amused. “You tree folk are creative, I had yet to be called a porcupine,” he chuckled, subconsciously bowing his head so that one of his forepaws could smooth down the windswept fur along his neck. He eased what he could reach, but when he lifted his head, unbeknownst to him, the fur sprung right back up completely unbothered. He did prefer keeping himself clean and well put together, but sometimes his fur had other plans.[break][break] “As far as aptitudes go, however, I do best on the ground.” he admitted as he sat down, the resounding crunch of dry leaves following suit. His tail swayed behind him, collecting dirt and debris and sweeping away the leaves in his vicinity. The inane smile indicated he was well aware of what he was doing, but he had always been a sucker for loose leaves. So much for maintaining appearances.[break][break] “But I regret to inform you that I do not share the same namesake as those infamous spiky rodents.” He extended a friendly, performative paw out towards the woman, wearing a more genuine expression. “The name’s Dante,” his head fell to the side again, “What about you, tree sprite?”[attr="class","dantetan"] Abyss [attr="class","dantefooter"]awaken, awaken | |

[googlefont="Caveat"] NAVI [attr="class","Naviclassscrollbar"] A toothy grin crossed the autumn-pelted femme’s face watching this guy’s facial expressions shift as he spoke. She felt lucky that the very first fellow wolf she had encountered since arriving to this valley was a friendly one, or at least he seemed to be anyway. He vaguely gave her the impression of the young childhood friend nextdoor that you play with all the time as pups. Too bad she didn’t actually know him prior to today, or that would be a pretty fun coincidence.
Creative, he called her. Her tail and chest fluffed up a tad at the statement, a slight wiggle in her head aiding her smile. “Well of course. We tree sprites gotta be crafty to climb trees, but we’ve got some funky minds too.” She chuckled, knowing that despite the metaphor, if any wolf could call their own mind funky, it was undoubtedly herself. A wolf in a tree was already pretty weird, or at least most wolves she had met told her so. She didn’t think so, but maybe she was just more clever than they were.
He claimed that he did best on the ground, which made sense. Technically she did too, she just had a fondness for trees. Tilting her head a smidge, curiosity got the best of her as he sat down, her own paws moving to let her leap down the last few branches. Just as they touched the ground, her pale green gaze flicked to the male, blinking a few times at the realization that she was taller than he was. Not by much, but still. As far as she could tell, their builds were quite similar, so her mind switched its focus to wondering if he was as much of a field-racer as she was…
She let a visible pout cross her maw at his words, shaking her head in almost disappointment. How could his name not be Porcupine? He had to be mistaken. But she listened anyway, ears flicking at the name Dante. She was silent at first after he asked of her own name, and her expression shifted to almost seeming deep in thought. And then she laughed.
“Naaaah, that don’t seem quite right. I feel like somethin’ like…Dhole…or maybe….Dingo. Somethin’ like that, they'd suit chu better.” She shook her head, coming back to what he had asked. “I am Navi of the tree sprites, newbie to the valley and ambassador of…some faraway land with no name.” Her toothy grin returned, giving the brute a quick glance-over and finally taking a moment to take in his scent. He didn’t particularly smell like other wolves, as far as she could tell anyway. But she also didn’t exactly know if there were any packs around for him to be from.
“So, whaddya know about this valley? Anythin’ I should know about? I haven’t really done much explorin’ yet, but I think I’ve caught whiff of other wolves once or twice.”

Her choice of wording amused him greatly. He had yet to meet someone — during first impressions, anyway — to refer to themselves as funky. He nodded along as if in agreement, his expression twisted as if deep in thought. “Add ‘unique’ to the list. I learn more and more about tree folk every day.” Wolves in trees, as bizarre as it was, were not an entirely new phenomenon to Dante. Not common necessarily, but he knew some individuals had the strength and coordination to accomplish such a feat.[break][break] Russet eyes followed her down as she descended from her perch, unable to stop the vague feeling of concern for her safety. But, he would not discredit her. She climbed her way up knowing the consequences, and subsequently also (he hoped) how to get down. The concern that swelled dissipated upon her reaching solid ground, at which Dante could get a better look at her. She, too, was auburn-colored, and her sage-green eyes complemented the fiery edge. Her nose drew his attention momentarily. It was pink and black and met in a gradient. Definitely unique. She was also a smidgen taller than him, which he internally chuckled at, and straightened his posture. Maybe his windswept mane could add an invisible inch or two.[break][break] Dante blinked with a jolt of surprise upon her laughing after she had gone silent. He tilted his head, a confused smile finding its way onto his maw. Dhole? Dingo?? Her comments made him laugh, a much more boisterous sound. “You think so? Maybe we're similar in colors but… I ain’t that short.” He paused to laugh some more, thoroughly entertained. “Hey, at least 'dhole' gives me a little more credit.” He paused again, thick eyebrows scrunched together as if searching the deep recesses of his mind. “You know what… I forgot about this but that reminds me. A childhood… friend? I guess? Used to call me D-man. It was so awful,” though he cringed at the memory, and speaking it out loud, the mirth was present. He shook his head.[break][break] Navi, huh? She continued speaking which gave Dante a moment to catch his breath. “Well Navi, looks like we’re two of a feather. I also happen to be new here, so don’t count on me to give you a tour,” he said lightheartedly. Russet eyes flitted around. Well, he was new to the valley but not necessarily this forest, he could say that much. He hummed. “Well, scratch that. I am new to the valley but I’ve hunkered down in this forest since my arrival… so yeah, you could say I know my way around.” It was his turn to puff out his chest with faux pride. “As for packs? Yeah. I know of one, I had a run-in with some of their pups. Vertok, I believe.” He nodded to himself, shifting in his seat.[break][break] Dante thought a little harder, remembering the woman he briefly met during the lynx attack. The one with gnarly scars and red marks all over her face. He didn’t remember catching her name but those marks had to have meant something. Looking at Navi, he leaned forward, as if prepared to disclose a secret. “But there has been talk of wolves running around with red marks on their bodies. Not blood; they’re purposeful. Lika insignias. In truth, Navi had never actually seen a dhole or a dingo. She vaguely knew what they were, as the older wolves of her family had traveled many places and seen many creatures she could only dream of. From what she remembered, she thought she recalled both of those being two different red-ish colored canines of some sort, though she didn’t know what the difference was. Maybe Dante had seen them before? Maybe he knew better than she did, so she went along with the comment on giving more credit.
And she listened with a smirk as he then described a nickname from his puphood, which she snickered at. “D-man? No way, that ain’t even right. Least I got creative with it.” She laughed, shaking her head at the thought.
Her toothy grin tilted into a half-frown as he mentioned that he was also relatively new to the valley, though he did seem like he knew at least a little bit about the area they were in. And he did mention knowing of one pack; perhaps that was the one she had been catching hints of on the wind recently. For a moment, he seemed deep in thought, and she found herself wondering what had happened during this run-in with pups he had brought up. But then he looked back at her, and something about the little gleam in his eye caught her attention. He leaned in, the classic signal of incoming secrets. Or gossip. Whichever came first. And she was always on the search for both. So she leaned in too, ears alert and listening intently as he spoke.
Wolves with red marks? Technically the two of them could probably be considered wolves with red marks, given their fur colors, but she was certain that's not what he meant. He meant red red. Maybe it was something they decorated their fur with? She had heard of wolves doing that before, she had ever done it herself though. She couldn’t even picture what someone would use to do something like that anyway. Maybe berries? Berries were pretty colorful. Ya had to be careful for ones that were dangerous though. Then again, most berries were only harmful if you ate them. She thought. She wasn’t a plant master, so maybe there were some that could hurt you if you touch them.
Then he mentioned the trees. “Trees with red symbols…..I think I saw a couple when I got here. A few in this area, too. Figured they were probably some kinda border marks or somethin’, so I haven’t looked at em much. Think they mean somethin’?”

Unless, they were traveling, in which case Dante could understand. But he had yet to hear word about a new pack in the valley, despite his relatively recent arrival. She asked if he thought they meant something, at which he could only offer a gentle shrug. “Nothin’ concrete but insignias like that don’t appear overnight. They have to mean something, and it’s got my interest. The woman I met, she’s strong, probably important. I’ll bet she has something to do with it, and I wonder how their presence will affect the valley. But it was short-lasting as he continued. Her face shifted from amused and proud to confused, if not a tad offended. Her maw opened in a shocked sort of way at his words, turning her head with a fleck of sass. A paw lifted from the ground and crossed her chest as she spoke, as though calming herself. “How dare you insinuate thatta tree sprite has questionable creativity! I’ll have you know that I came up with them names all on my own. Dingo may not be good enough for ya, but Dhole is all original. Ain’t never heard of anythin called a dhole...I think...” Her words gave off the impression of being insulted, yet her voice was full of sarcasm, the offense clearly playful rather than serious. Though, as she reached her final sentence, she faltered a tiny bit, uncertainty crossing her face, attempting to go through her entire dictionary of animal names in search of the word dhole, but finding nothing.
After a minute of failure, she started laughing, shaking her head. “Meh, I tried. Can do better than that, though, I’ll tell ya that much. By the time I see ya again, I’ll have more ready.”
As the conversation slipped further into information rather than playfulness, she listened intently to what he said, considering the red marks that she had seen. If she remembered right, all of the marks did look pretty similar, but as she had said, she assumed them to be border markers. Then again, they had been scattered. Unless there was a pack with some pretty confusing borders, she doubted they would be so random. Or maybe she was just constantly trespassing. Who knows.
“Hmm...it ain’t too outta the ordinary for loners to show up inna new valley and try ta stake a claim. Could be as simple as there’s somethin buried wherever there’s marks. Hard to say.” He spoke the word Vertok, but no she had no recollection of ever hearing it. The name of a pack, probably. “You think they belong to these Vertok guys? Or somebody else? Never heard ova pack usin stuff like that. Then again I haven’t been here long, could be the norm here and I wouldn’t know.” She shrugged casually, glancing around them to see if she would happen to spot a red mark on any of the surrounding trees she may have not seen before.

After she admitted default he let out a boisterous laugh. “Dhole is a Navi original, huh,” he echoed, his head tilting to the side. “You are a weird one, aren’t you? First wolf I’ve seen in a tree and trust me—I’ve seen plenty of weird things in my life,” he humored lightheartedly. “I’ll count the seasons then. Next time I see you, you better have the best names you can think of… or I might just have to have a word with the tree sprite council and request a revision of their licensing rules.” Dante tutted and shook his head with mock disappointment. “We wouldn’t want a fake among them, that’d be a shame.”[break][break] She brought up an interesting point, about the markings signifying buried goods. If he were desperate or curious enough—which if he was being honest with himself, he wondered how he had never thought to look harder at the trees and surrounding ground—he would take a peek for himself. “You’re onto something,” he contemplated the thought and it almost had him wanting to investigate, but he refrained. When she asked if he thought they belonged to Vertok, he thought back to his encounter with a few of its members. The situation happened so fast he barely recalled the finer details, but nothing about red markings marking their fur felt familiar. They were only present on the scarred woman, who smelled entirely different.[break][break] Dante shook his head at her pondering it being the norm. “Doubt it. I’ve been here a few moons enough to figure out they’re not normal. The other packs don’t use markers like that. They change with the land, new marks appearing where they weren’t previously, and others disappearing. It’s almost a phenomenon,” he chuckled at the idea. “Like a pack of specters.” He shook his head again. “But it’s none’a my business… despite how much I want to make it my business.
