“G-Guys…I really don’t think we should be going this far…” He trusted them. They were his best friends. They really were. They were practically his brothers. But sometimes…he really did wonder how he had ended up in their little crew. He didn’t match their energies at all. But, somehow, this is where he ended up.
They said they were just going on a small trip outside of the densite, just to go and see something cool. But this was further than just outside the densite. Round silver eyes darted all across their surroundings. Every bush, every cracking branch, every movement. Any of it, at any moment, could be a predator. Granted, this was a learning experience, as were most adventures like this. Maybe they would find some new plant, or get to see an animal of prey that they were often told about but had never seen. There was that small part of him that almost enjoyed these adventures for that reason. But, at the same time…none of them were adults. Even though the other two seemed to think that they were, if they came face to face with some huge predator, their only hope would be to run. But would either of them actually run? He wasn’t so sure.
Malakai’s body jumped slightly as the patch of bushes off to his side ruffled, likely from the wind. Swallowing down his nerves, he quickened his pace, walking almost right in between both Zero and Shepherd’s behinds.
He tried to think more on the bright side. He did what he could to push his nerves down and lift his head up. He kept his ears perked, more for the sake of listening for any suspicious sounds, but also to at least attempt to seem more…brave. He was sure that these two could probably see right through it, but the best he could do was try. For their sake. Or more for their desire for fun.
“W-...Where are we even going? Are we actually going to look at something?” 338 | Bri Burn Maybe we could have someone from the Vertok catch them at some point? Or depending on how far out they end up, a loner could appear. Whatever happens happens I guess lol

S H E P H E R D
Shoulder to shoulder with his buddy, Zero, Shepherd strutted with high head and tail, his large ears sitting attentively at the top of his head. He had a cocky little smirk placed on his short muzzle. With Zero and Malakai at either side - or, well, at least Kai had his back, he thought - what did he have to fear? The young, fiery wolf pup practically radiated confidence when he was around them, and even now as he ventured into the great beyond the densite, he felt no different.
He rolled his yellow eyes at his friend's hesitation. "Don't be a wuss, Kai," he bumped his flank against the other boy's shoulder, playfully whacking him with his scruffy tail. "you can't go running back to mommy now." he goaded. A sensitive topic to make fun of, perhaps, but rarely did he think of little technicalities like that before he spoke.
"Of course we're going to look at somethin'," he then said, sounding bored already. "right, Zero?" he glanced to the silvery-white pup then, who was just slightly taller than he was. As he looked at those sharp, feminine features of the boy's face, an idea immediately struck his mischievous little mind.
Up ahead two boulders narrowed their path, with an old, fallen tree on one side. As the trio neared, Shepherd trotted ahead and leapt onto the log, strutting along its length until the other's reached the two rocks, where he gave a dramatic bow and gestured to the path with his paw. "Ladies first," He jeered, a shit-eating grin pointed directly at Zero.

Zero
Thoughts| "Spoken Word | Outside Speech | Abyss Burn Zero ignored his friends as they bickered, though their raising voices were starting to get on his nerves. At this point their loud mouths were going to get them caught before they could get out of the packs territory and they would be in trouble. If they got in trouble then that would mean more eyes on them, which would make it even harder for him to meet with the amazing lady in the woods that treated him like he meant something.
His ears were pitched forward, straining to ignore his friends though he could always assume that Shep was badgering on Kai for being scared or worried about their journey. Why couldn't they just enjoy the adventure? He was about to turn and snap on them to be quiet when suddenly Shepherd was ahead of them, bowing to the path.
"Ladies first."
Those words were like the nail in the coffin. A snarl ripped from his throat, well at least to him it was a viscous snarl, though to an elder wolf it probably sounded more like an angry whine. "That's it!" He shouted and ran forward, leaping and knocking himself straight into Shepherds side. He wasn't going to hurt his friend, but he also wasn't going to let him make fun of him for his looks. He had been mistaken for a girl too many times for it to not trigger him anymore. "I'm not a girl you jerk!" He shouted, throwing his paws in a flurry of hits against his friends face-or really anywhere he could reach.
I can see there's so much to learn It's all so close and yet so far

There was a small sting that struck his chest, his ears flattening a tad against his head. He knew what Shep was like. Not to insult him, but he wasn’t exactly…bright. He didn’t really think before he spoke, which led to situations like this. Kai pushed down the clutching feeling in his stomach, reminding himself that Shep hadn’t meant to reference his mother as a direct…thing. Just the idea of Kai running back to the pack scared. It didn’t meant anything…..it still hurt, but it didn’t mean anything.
He tried to focus momentarily on the little whack on the face from that big fluffy tail. If Shep’s tail was half as big as his ego, a small whack would probably knock him cold. Luckily he didn’t have to deal with that. The thought of him being thrown by his friend’s tail was enough to bring him a tiny speck of a smile, though. Both Shep and Zero thought that they were strong as could be, they could face the world with their heads held high. And maybe they could. But Kai didn’t have that much confidence. Instead, he would stand in the back and make sure that, if they did face the world, they weren’t alone.
As Shep leapt forward on their path, the little red-brown wolf quickened his pace a tad, trying to keep pace at Zero’s side in Shep’s absence. But as they neared the narrowed area where the other darker brown and orange brute stood and bowed, he almost chuckled at the comment that was made. While Kai never made fun of his friends himself, he did find it a touch amusing when they did it to each other. At least in this scenario, unlike the last one, it was a playful joke rather than an unplanned slap in the face.
He froze up a little bit as Zero jumped forward and the two began to tussle. There was a part of him that wanted to leap in, to join them. But he also wanted to keep an eye on their surroundings. If something found them while they were too busy beating each other up, they could be in a lot more trouble than they were on their own.
He still tried to stick close even as his two friends wrestled in front of him, silver eyes watching them kick and claw at each other. He glanced around them nervously, keeping his nose and ears active every second in case something came up. But…he felt bad. During times like these, Shep and Zero were just out to have fun. They didn’t care about the danger or the consequence, they just wanted to have a good time. And though it was good to have someone watching out, he still began to feel bad. Was he ruining their fun? Did him being there make this trip more annoying than enjoyable? He tried to convince himself that this wasn’t true, that they still valued him being there, even if he was kind of the downer of the party.
He didn’t sense anything. There were no off scents. There were no distant sounds. And he didn’t actually see anything other than just nature. Maybe…
Trying to put a smile on his face, he walked forward and waited, watching the two wrestle, looking for something. He waited until they were positioned a certain way, when both of them were side by side rather than on top of each other. The moment this happened, he jumped forward, extending front and back legs in opposite directions and falling on the wrestling pups. Though, his aim was a tad off, landing more on one than the other. With this, he sort of fell forward, chin hitting the dirt while his back legs and rear found themselves caught on a body. Who’s, he didn’t know, but he was kinda stranded. Even with his failure of an “attack”, if it could be called that, he let out a little laugh. Yeah, he was a wuss sometimes, and he was constantly nervous when not back at home, but hey, he could have fun too.

S H E P H E R D Shepherd let out a villainous laugh as Zero rammed into his side, knocking them both off the log and tumbling to the ground. "I'm not a girl you jerk!" The silver pup barked, standing over him. Shep's tongue lolled out of his gaping jaws as he lay on his back, looking absolutely stupid as he tried grabbing the paws battering at his face. "You sure fight like a girl!" He taunted further, kicking at Zero's stomach and flopping around awkwardly to get to his feet. When standing he leaped sideways, testing Zero's strength by throwing his weight against his side, attempting to grab his muzzle--
An unexpected force squashed them both, making the black and copper boy roll to the ground once again, this time falling over Zero and getting pinned under Malakai. While he was surprised that the younger pup had joined their rambunctious play fight, that was the thought furthest from his mind - he had to retaliate, and prove who was boss!
Shepherd twisted and wiggled until he could grab ahold of Kai's shoulder; not enough for his little needle-teeth to tear the skin. With a ferocious, muffled snarl, he shook his head viciously and whacked his friend with wide-spread paws. It was in these moments that he thrived in; attacking his best buddies without any adults yelling at him for being too rough - he lived in the moment, and it was amazing! Although, some may say dangerous, as he never paid attention to what watched them bicker and play from the shadows.

It's all so close and yet so far "I swear to God I'm gonna beat the crud outta you!" Zero yelled, the grin on Shep's face making him want to break something, well, primarily break his friends face, though he could already hear the chastising from Ara about being to violent. He couldn't sit through another lecture.
Even as Shep tried to kick him away Zero kept coming back at him, snapping his little teeth but all that he could catch was air, which only furthered the rage in his tiny body. He let out what he thought was roar-but was really something between a yowl and a squeak-when suddenly the air was knocked out of him.
He gasped for breath, trying to figure out what was going on when he saw that it was Kai trying to join in. A grin crossed his face, anger turning to excitement. He flailed underneath his friends, clawing to the top of the pile and just letting his paws go wild, hitting anyone who was in reach, though his growls of determination fell away to laughter. "You guys both fight like total weenies!" He exclaimed with a cackle.

He couldn’t deny it. Wrestling with Shep and Zero was always fun. They didn’t get to do it often, especially not back at home. The sound of one snarl or out-of-tune yowl and someone would scold them. That didn’t really upset Kai much, for sometimes their playing did get a little bit too rough even for him. But sometimes a little rough-housing was good. It, if anything, solidified the fact that he could still be one with his brothers.
Even in his stranded position, backside stuck on whoever he was closest to, he still tried what he could to fight back, kicking his back legs rapidly, sometimes at nothing, sometimes at someone. He couldn’t tell or see. He likely looked as though he were trying to swim rather than fight, but what else was he to do?
The smallest opportunity rose as the pup his back end was stuck on shifted. He managed to plant his front paws in front of him and just lift his chin from the ground when he felt a pair of jaws clamp on his shoulder. It wasn’t really much of a bite, nor did it go inward much, only grabbing a layer of skin. But even as a pup himself he had learned very well how sharp puppy teeth could be. Luckily, despite being the smallest and the most clumsy of the three brothers, Kai was an oddly durable little bugger. He could take a bite to the shoulder, even if it was from the all-mighty Shep.
A big grin crossed his face, his head turning and his jaws reaching out. He managed to bite down on what he assumed was an ear, probably Shep’s, when he felt a sudden force smack him square in the tail. The other kicks had been somewhat smaller and not hard enough to really throw off too much balance, but this kick was different. It probably wasn’t intentional, nor did he know who did it, maybe Zero? But, intentional or not, a hefty kick slammed right into his back legs, his paws tangling up beneath him and his balance immediately capsizing. He felt himself falling forward, eyes going wide. He didn’t mean to, it was done out of panic, but in that moment he truly bit down, almost hoping that Shep’s singular ear would pull him back into balance. But it did not. His whole front half leaned forward, and though his paws reached out to catch himself, he found there was nothing there.
With a yowl, which caused his teeth to release Shep, Kai went rolling forward, right shoulder hitting the dirt that was far more slanted than he remembered. His head bent beneath him, his back legs curled inward and then folding out when they caught air. The ground he had thought was relatively flat ended up being a rather steep hill. This was why he was supposed to watch their surroundings!
With each roll and hit of his shoulders against the ground, the pup released high-pitched yelps and grunts, his speed only increasing. A rolling, tumbling ball of fur, Kai almost felt like it would never stop until the ground shifted again, flattening for less than a second before he temporarily went uphill. He found himself mid-air, paws flailing, before he went through a bush at the bottom of the hill. He hit the ground with a thud, bouncing forward only once.
He laid there unmoving for a minute, and in a moment of dejavu, found his chin planted against the ground.
“Owww….” He lifted his head and shook, bits of dirt falling from his pelt. When he opened his eyes, he actually didn’t feel too badly hurt. Maybe it wasn’t that bad of a tumble? Or maybe it was leftover adrenaline from the short-lived tussle. But his focus didn’t stay on himself for long. Little, round, silver eyes opened wide, a shivering chill running down his spine.
Half-corpse, half-skeleton filled his entire vision. It was huge…
The body lay before him in the middle of a very small clearing, bones protruding from what remained of torn bloody fur and somewhat large scraps of meat. There wasn’t a head in sight, maybe contorted backwards behind the body itself. The fur was a rather plain shade of brown, with bits of darker and lighter mixed in, plus the addition of blood. He couldn’t tell what it was. But this also wasn’t his first thought. He didn’t notice the hooves at the end of the legs, or the tiny tail. All he saw was something large, dead, scary. If he was a different kind of wolf, he could have fit inside of that ribcage. What in the world was this thing?!
“S-S-Shep! Z-Zero!” Panic began to set in, but he couldn’t move, nor could his frightened eyes leave the body. There was nothing else in the clearing, nothing else to catch his attention or break it away. Only the body. His heart beat hard in his chest, his wondrous mind immediately hoping with all its might that this large dead creature wouldn’t suddenly stand up and come after him.

S H E P H E R D In the squabble Shepherd felt a yank on his ear, teeth pulling and shaking while he still bit Kai's shoulder. With his face buried in cinnamon red fur and silver paws whacking everything they could reach, he wasn't sure who exactly had his ear, but he didn't care, because he knew whoever had him was probably getting a mouth full of dirt and ear-grime! But then, a hardy kick sent Malakai off of him and tumbling forward, and the grip on his ear hardened. Sharp teeth bit down, and one canine even punctured the skin. Shepherd yowled at the pain, jerking his head away and shaking his fur.
"Kai!! What the hell?!" He yapped angrily, bringing a paw up to feel his oversized ear. There was only a slight smudge of blood on his dark pads, but he knew he'd have a hard time hiding it from the pack. He growled, Kai had better start running... wait, where was he?
"...Kai?" Shepherd scrambled to his paws and bounded to the edge of the hill, watching with wide yellow eyes as his friend went hurtling down the slope with a series of yelps, and disappearing into the undergrowth below.
"Kai!!" The dark pup shouted after him. There was no immediate response, and that could only mean one thing... "Oh gods, he's dead!!" Shepherd lowered his haunches to the ground, bent over the crest of the dirt cliff with sorrow in his eyes. "Noooo!" He howled a mournful song - more of a squeak than anything. And he had shouted at his wimpy little brother in their last moments together...he would forever hate himself for that, and cherish the little tear on his ear in his memory, he would--
“S-S-Shep! Z-Zero!” Oh....oh! He was alive! Thank the skies, Kai was alive! But he sounded frightened, surely he was in grave danger, injured, even! Shepherd knew he'd have to carry Kai on his back, even if the long journey and heavy burden killed him, he would make sure his friend got to see his home again! "I'm comin', Kai! Don't mo-whoah!!" His speech ended in a shout as he went galloping down the hill, only for his awkward paws to get tangled up amongst each other, sending him tumbling down the rest of the way. Upon reaching the bottom, he crashed right into his friend with a grunt. He cursed, shaking his fur out as he stood up, but it took only a moment for him to notice what had Kai motionless in fear. "Whoa..." He breathed. He was awe-struck, jaw agape and paws frozen to the dirt. But, it only took a moment for his chaotic little mind to kick in. "Imma touch it!!" He barked, racing forward. |

It's all so close and yet so far Zero made his way to the top of the dog-well, puppy pile-a grin stretched across his narrowed snout. As long as he was on top he felt he had the lowest risk of getting getting hit by a wayward claw or a snap of his friends teeth, though he could feel them struggle underneath him. He cackled, about to boast about how he was the winner of this skirmish even though he had barely done anything when all of a sudden he felt a drop, hanging across Shep's back, Kai suddenly gone.
He huffed, pitching forward and tumbling off of Shep and pushed himself to his oversized paws, swinging his head around, though couldn't spot their friend anywhere. His brows knit together while is gaze searching the surrounding bushes, sure that their friend had ran and hid, plotting a surprise attack but it never came. "Kai! Kai come out!" He shouted as Shep shouted in anger, Zero was about to yell at him to shut it when their friends voice yelped up at them.
"Kai!" Though he was worried, Zero didn't rush forward while Shep yelled about their friend being dead. He rolled his eyes in response, if their friend was talking then he wasn't dead! He slowly walked towards where Kai's voice was coming from, for once the youth was thinking before acting, maybe it was a sign that his secret mentors training was working? He came to the edge though as he looked over he couldn't see him. "Shep, we should be-" But the words were lost as Shep went hurling over the edge. Zero sighed, rolling his eyes to the sky. Taking tentative steps he started to climb down the edge, learning from his friends tumbles, though the earth crumbled under his paws, causing him to go sliding.
"Whoa! Watch out!" He screamed though like before it was more of a squeal as he slid to the bottom, finally spotting Kai, staring as if he he was looking into the eyes of death while Shep was running forward towards some kind of...thing. The silver boy hesitated, taking in the carcass before running forward. "No! I am!" He yelled, though his long legs caused him to trip over himself, chin hitting the dirt but he pushed himself up, stumbling after his fiery fured friend, the scent of decay growing stronger in his nose. He had no idea what this was. but it was cool.

He was frozen, both in shock and in fear. The sheer size of the corpse before him, the way the body was contorted, the exposed bones, the blood. Normally wolves would have been thrilled at the scent of blood and the sight of food. But this? This…..was terrifying. Especially for a pup. Though it was likely more dramatic in his head, the bones of the ribs glinted against light coming through the treetops above, and what blood there was that wasn’t dried shimmered. Wait, not all of-
A hard slam went right into his backside, once again reminding him of what happened up the hill. He rolled forward once, landing back on his stomach. He shook the dirt off of his head, but when his eyes opened, he was even closer to the corpse than before, causing him to jump up and backwards. Though he acknowledged the fact that Shep had come to join him, beyond seeing him there when he jumped away, Kai couldn’t look away from the corpse.
It wasn’t until he heard even more tumbling and then pawsteps at his side that his gaze turned, finding both Shep and Zero now by his sides. But just as quickly as his friends had joined him, giving him even the slightest feeling of comfort from the horror in front of them, the feeling quickly dissolved. Shep ran forward, claiming he was going to touch the horrid carcass, quickly followed by Zero doing the same.
“W-What?! No! Don’t touch it! We don’t know what it is! What if what killed it is still here!” Instinctually, the dark-furred pup’s eyes began darting all around them, looking for anything, anyone, literally any possible sign that they might not be the only creatures here. He did feel as though something was watching him, but that was a feeling he had all the time. It didn’t make it any less threatening.
And, unknown to himself or to the others, there was, in fact, something watching them. Had Kai been looking around more calmly and carefully for signs of others, he might’ve spotted the dark set of eyes that watched from the bushes on the opposite side of the clearing. But there was no movement. Nothing was happening. Not yet, anyway. It seemed like they were alone. That didn’t make Kai any less curious about the brutal creature that laid before them. He stayed where he was, his paws frozen, but his eyes constantly on the move, searching.

S H E P H E R D The chaotic little man cackled as he looked over his shoulder, watching Zero tumble to the ground once more. He should have known he was no match for the swift, the mighty, the ultimate Shep! Who now reached the massive carcass at what he considered to be record speed. Once turning to examine the mutilated creature, his pride was forgotten, taking in the giant skeleton with slabs of meat and skin sagging from the ribs. Jaw agape in awe, he walked around to the back of the beast, where the head lay torn away from the throat, with only one eye remaining, the other likely taken by a crow. The rotten stench of decay met his nostrils, making his lips curl back to show pointed puppy teeth in disgust. It almost smelled worse than he did...almost. It was....awesome!!
“W-What?! No! Don’t touch it! We don’t know what it is! What if what killed it is still here!” Malakai cried behind him. Shepherd offered a dry scoff in return, plopping his haunches down in the dried pool of blood next to the head. He didn't notice or didn't care. "Kai, please, it's obviously just one of the hunts the rooks always brag about," He wasn't sure if he was right or not, but the only thing that mattered was if Kai believed it so he wouldn't ruin the fun. "And they're long gone, we have this whole thing to ourselves!" Smugly closing his eyes and puffing out his chest, he grinned, placing a paw on the skull right where the eyeball was meant to be. He wanted to see these two wretch if it was the last thing he did!
And...it just might be the last thing indeed. The ignorant pup didn't notice the shimmering, fresh blood still seeping from the corpse, nor did he realize there was a silent creature creeping from the foliage behind him, its greyish brown fur blending well with the yellowing grass as it stalked him. It was only when Shep opened his amber eyes again that he saw his two friends cowering away- Zero's eyes were wide and his jaw agape, whilst Kai scrunched in upon himself and let out some sort of...high frequency, elongated whimper. "Hah!" Shep guffawed. He really had terrified them! The oblivious pup scraped a claw along the meat, lifting his paw to wiggle a sliver of flesh in their faces, his tongue sticking to tease them. He expected no less of a reaction from Kai, but Zero? "Y'all are a couple of-" The ground beneath Kai suddenly darkened, causing Shepherd's brow to furrow. "-ew! Did you just--"
A low, feline growl from behind him. What.
The fiery young male slowly turned around, and once he did, he was eye-to-eye with something he didn't even know the name of. A lynx. He stared stupidly, shocked, and more confused than scared. This beast wasn't nearly as big as the corpse behind him, but the blood-stained maw of the animal showed that it had been feasting here before they had interrupted, and was now tired of waiting them out. It wanted its meal, and Shepherd stood between it and the carcass.

It's all so close and yet so far For a moment Zero felt frozen as he took it all in and he hated the feeling but he couldn't force his paws to move him. His ears pitched the Kai as he pleaded for them to leave and then threw themselves to the arrogant Shep who was going all out to try to gross them out. Even though his friend tried to tell them this was a corpse left by the rook the little white pup couldn't bring himself to believe it. His gut told him that things just weren't right about this all.
He wanted to prove his friend wrong but his throat couldn't form the words and he knew that if he did say something it might panic Kai even more though he wasn't sure how possible that would be when he heard the sound of running water even though there was no stream in sight. His pointed head snapped to the panicked pup, his face finally revealing an emotion: disgust.
"Kai! Seriously! You're such a baby!" He sneered, unable to believe that his friend was so scared though this act seemed to snap him from his trance. He turned his attention back to Shep, about to dare him to eat one of the nasty looking scraps from the slaughtered whatever it was but his golden eyes found a figure rising above Shep.
He didn't know what the creature was, all he knew was that it was covered in blood and angry and if they didn't move they would be dead. "Shep!" The boy cried out, his body finally snapping in place, launching him forward across the ground. His oversized paws trampled over themselves but he kept moving, barreling forward with all of his might and knocking himself into Shep's side, the moment forcing the two of them to start rolling across the hard packed dirt, getting them a few feet away from the creature but after regaining his senses Zero had no idea what to do. They could try to run but he didn't think all three of them could get away. Someone, he was sure, would have to die. "You guys need to run!" He shouted, untangling himself from Shep and turning to face the lynx with his tail held high trying hard not to lose control of himself like Kai had. He had to be a good distraction so his friends could get away.

Nearly all wild creatures learn to follow their instincts. It is something that young of all kinds are encouraged to follow, for it is most often what saves you in situations of life and death. Don’t trust any creatures you don’t know. Don’t eat anything you suspect could be deadly or bring you sickness. Don’t go out alone when you can’t protect yourself. And, should you come face to face with a beast that is sure to kill you, a beast that you stand no chance against, a beast you would be a fool to face: run.
As multiple flashes of movement happened at once, Kai bolted. A sliver of his mind was unbelievably grateful that he had been a racer, a wolf built for speed, someone who could get out of situations like these in the blink of an eye. Terror flowed through his body like a rushing river, fear like none he had ever felt before. Where fear moments ago had made his whole body freeze, it now pushed him as hard as he could possibly handle. Trees and plants flew past him in blurry flashes, their shapes and colors lost on unseeing eyes. In that moment, the only thing he could see, the only thing he felt or thought of, was the image of the giant cat standing before him, its eyes wild, blood dripping from its opened maw, giant claws. The thoughts only made him run faster.
He didn’t know where he was, or where he was going. It wasn’t until the land around him grew brighter and light shined ahead that he actually came to, pulled for a moment out of his fear. It grew closer and closer until finally the deep brown and dark-clay-colored pup leapt forward, rolling forward and landing on his side. When his silver eyes even then still full of fear opened, he found that he was no longer surrounded by trees. He looked around, surprised to find that he had actually reached the edge of the forest and was now laying at the start of the expansive meadows that consumed much of the valley.
His sides heaved as he caught his breath, trying to calm down as best as he could, thought his heart pounded in his chest in a fight against it.
“I…I think…we made it…what…what was that thing…was it a ca-” He froze again, eyes looking frantically along the bushes he had just came out of. He waited a minute or two, hoping that he had just been too fast and that his brothers had merely fallen behind. But he heard nothing.
“G-Guys…?” Heart still uncontrollable and breath coming in waves, Kai stood on shaky legs facing the bushes. They had followed him, right? He knew his brothers, he knew how they were. Both of them took every opportunity to put themselves in danger, to explore, to face any challenge head on. A part of him admired them for that, for that was something he found he was unable to do. He loved learning, sure, but learning in an environment where he knew he was safe. He came on these adventures with them because he loved them and didn’t want to ruin all of their fun, even though he still did that almost every time. He knew that they loved having fun. But…..they weren’t stupid enough to face off against…whatever that thing had been. They couldn’t be. That thing had been huge, it had killed a giant elk presumably on its own, and it had not looked happy that they were playing around its meal. Just looking at it, that beast could probably eat any one of them whole and still have room for the other two. Three of them versus one or not, they were pups, and that thing was huge, angry, and hungry. There was no chance in all stars that they would come even close to giving it a single scratch, much less defeating it. They knew that, right? They….they wouldn’t stay…..they wouldn’t have challenged it…..they couldn’t…..
“S-Shep?.......Z-Zero…?.......Guys? A-Are you…..just….trying to scare me?.....This…..it's not funny!..............G-guys…..?” The more he called out, the more he spoke, the more that his fear overtook him again and the more the hope and relief drained from his body. No….I told them that it was dangerous…..I told them that something was still there…..I told them that we should have left it alone…..they couldn’t have tried to fight it….they couldn’t…they would….I have to….
His body trembling like a leaf, he jumped forward, ready to rush back into the bushes, but his legs froze. Staring into the leaves, into the darkness, he couldn’t move. Something was stopping him, something he couldn’t control. There was something wrong, something he couldn’t quite place. The beast….didn’t follow him…did it? His legs tensed and remained planted in place. His eyes darted in front of him, looking for anything, any sign of movement. Something was there, he knew it was. Was it Shep or Zero? Was it the beast? He couldn’t smell anything, or see anything.
Maybe…it’s nothing…nothing is there…
He took a step forward. Crack! He froze again. Something was definitely there. He waited a few seconds, hoping it was his imagination. And then there were eyes. His heart skipped multiple beats and his paws shook. Just as he went to open his mouth, whatever was in the bushes moved forward. He readied himself to jump backwards if it was the beast from before. But it wasn’t. It was a wolf. Not Zero or Shep, nor anyone from the Vertok. But a wolf nonetheless.
The wolf spoke, but their words found unlistening ears. He looked passed them, peering through their legs into the bushes behind them. “B-B-Brothers……i-in trouble……m-monster….h-help….”
"Speaking." Thinking.

[nospaces][googlefont=Cardo:400,700|Quicksand:500,700] [attr="class","danteheader"]dante [attr="class","dantesubheader"]each night you hear the drums of war [attr="class","dantebodyscroll"]A peculiar stench permeated through the trees. It smelled of death and decay, and it made his stomach roil. Hunger pangs had frequented him, and he didn’t usually ignore them, but he could practically feel his appetite recede the longer the rotten smell lingered in his nostrils. But it pulled him forward, against his better judgment, even past pack borders, because he couldn’t remember the last time he had truly eaten. While the smell indicated decomposed flesh, whatever it was, was big, smelling strongly of venison. Dante wasn’t particularly desperate, but he also wasn’t an idiot. He could tolerate overripe meat if it meant he could indulge in a meal, and he knew he could do it quickly. Such confidence kept him going.[break][break] His nose was pressed to the underbrush as he moved along, noting all the layers of various scents, fresh and old. He was focused on the ground, his face twisted in quiet concentration, however, a shift in the air made his fur stand on end as he immediately perked up. Reddish eyes scanned the perimeter, his ears strained against the natural chorus of woodland noise. There was something there, beyond the sounds, just quiet enough to be hardly discernible, but loud enough that it was all he could focus on. He took an experimental step forward, the foliage around him bending to his weight as resounding cracks sliced the silence. His spine prickled again, the telltale feeling of eyes staring holes into him suddenly burned his skin, and he whirled around, only to meet silver eyes blown wide with nothing but primal, unadulterated fear. He froze, even his breath, as all he could do was stare back. It was a pup, barely six months old. Dante recognized the look in his eyes. He was scared for his life.[break][break] Had he caused that? Dante wondered, but almost instantly he knew it wasn’t his doing. But something was terribly, terribly wrong. He advanced carefully towards the pup—he needed to do something. Was he hurt? Dante managed to get closer but he didn’t want to scare the poor boy any more than he already was. He was trembling, and a sour smell clung to his fur. The auburn man had never seen such panic. He wanted to say something— do something—literally anything, but he knew words would fall on deaf ears (and he couldn’t act without knowing anything), just by watching the pup for a few mere seconds, whose silver eyes darted all around him before settling just behind him. He was scared beyond comprehension.[break][break] Suddenly a timid, quaking voice spoke out. Brothers. Monster. Help. That was all that was needed for Dante to understand the situation, even if only slightly. He noted the direction the pup was staring and took it as a nonverbal cue. Turning around, he pushed forward on strong legs fueled by adrenaline, wasting no more time in tracing the pup’s trail back a few ways. The farther he ran, the stronger the stench of death grew. Finally, he broke through the treeline, entering a small clearing. A massive, horribly contorted corpse lay on the opposite end; the origin of the rotten smell. Blood stained the nearby grass. Dante hurried towards it, urgency in his stride, and a flash of brown in his peripheral vision made his eyes snap to the side. There![break][break] He followed after the figure with briskness, taking note of the red paw prints that were no bigger than his own. The prints were too small and slim to be a cougar or bear’s—to his fortune—but too large to be a coyote’s. It was distinctly feline. Damn cat, he cursed, barreling forward. Ahead of him, he heard paws beat the ground and he pushed harder. Eventually, a figure entered his line of sight: long legs, tufted ears, arched back, predominantly grey. He found his target.[break][break] A loud growl ripped from his throat as he slowly closed the gap between himself and the lynx, which was in hot pursuit of two other pups. It was a warning for the cat but it didn’t let up, as expected. Dante needed more momentum so began launching off of whatever remained in his way as he steered to the side so that he was flanking the lynx. He planned to pincer it and cut it off from the pups’ trail. Finally gaining the lead he made his move, lunging out from beside the cat and successfully landing in front of it, his stance airtight. He heard rustling all around him. Did it have backup? It wasn’t far from impossible; sometimes lynxes hunted in pairs, but it wouldn't deter him. The hardest part was over (he hoped), now he just needed to make it stand down. [attr="class","dantefooter"]awaken, awaken |

It's all so close and yet so far Everything happened so fast, too fast. Zero could hardly comprehend that Kai had ran. The only indication was the lynxes eyes flickering as if they were tracking movement and for a moment he glanced back only to see his friends back end as he disappeared into the trees. The silver minnow of a pup stared after him in shock. He knew Kai was afraid but to run away? Leave them behind? Anger started to coat his thoughts as the only logical conclusion came to his not so logical mind: if this was how Kai treated his brothers in the face of danger then could Zero really trust him? It was almost as if he could feel a hot knife of betrayal starting to dig between his shoulder blades as he turned his head back to the lynx. Zero might have been scared, but he wasn't a runner, besides, he still had one brother with him and he wasn't going to leave.
A golden gazed wolf flashed in front of his mind, making him steady as he prepared to face off with the viscous beast. He may have just met Artemis but he was determined to not bring her shame, his little heart full of dedication to the one adult who seemed to care about his need to grow stronger.
In his ears his growl was a might roar, one of a warrior but to anyone else it was like the growl of a chipmunk. Zero was going to be a hero, he was determined of that, even if it meant dying as one. The lynx charged, making him stiffen but he kept his head up, jaws clenching as he waited for the impending pain...that never came as a stranger came charging into their clearing and directly in front of the murderous cat. I was made to rise above it
Finally Timber felt like she was making progress for her guild. She was almost in the Vertok territory, she had been rehearing her speech for their king and queen in her head with every step, feeling more confident each time. Well, each time she wasn't interrupted by her new charge. Somber olive eyes flicked over to this pup, Cinders, she had found and small smile tugged at her lips. Having a child to look after had been the last thing she thought would happen and yet...here they were.
She wasn't keen on bringing a child into these political debates where things could turn sour at any minute but there wasn't anything she could do besides make her wait while she went in to negotiate but Timber had a feeling that Cinders would argue with her about being left behind and she was, partially, dreading that conversation. When she was younger Timber had always wanted to be a mother, it had been a desire drilled into her from a young age and for a short while she'd had that-until it was all ripped away. A small sliver of hope lived in her, thinking that one day she could find love and try again but with how things were going that sliver was shrinking smaller and smaller, until the chance encounter with this pup, who was quickly wiggling her way into the Lords heart, though in all logical aspects Timber wasn't sure how long or how feasible their relationship could last with her always being on the move. She didn't find it fair to make the small being at her side constantly travel without a true home to settle into, but they would cross that bridge when it came to it.
Timber was about to ask Cinders if she wanted to rest when a scent crossed her nose, bringing her to a stop. The wind carried the scent of death and the metallic scent of blood, it could be the promise of a carcass to scavenge and it was tempting-until sounds reached her ears. Growls and the rustling of bushes. All of this screamed danger to her. Her gaze hardened as she turned to Cinders. "Hide in the bushes. I'll come back for you. Do not argue with me." She directed, shoving the pup into some brush with her snout before turning and running towards the sounds. She wasn't sure what she was going to do but she felt like she needed to do something, but she wasn't prepared for her next sight.
She burst into a clearing to see two pups seemingly trying to face off with a lynx that was charging towards them as another wolf came in front of it. Timber didn't know what exactly was going on but she knew she had to act. She came up behind the lynx, slowing into a deliberate walk as her ears pinned back and muzzle rippled back into a snarl.
