Axel tilted his head as Dante further explained his perspective on the stars, trying to get his head around it all. What his friend was saying sounded confusing, yet also somewhat made sense at the same time. Or at least, he thought it did, but it still made him feel even more confused than before. Stars looked like snowflakes, and the night was cold... yet they glowed a bit like the sun, and the sun was warm. His ears dropped a little as he tried to comprehend it, only to perk up again a moment later when he realised Dante had more to say. Though, the words he heard only confused him more; "But did you know the stars could sing?"
"Wha-?" He genuinely couldn't tell whether Dante believed it, or whether he was just playing games with him. He couldn't even tell if he believed it himself. By now, his ears were pinned right back, and he was unsure if he should be curious or concerned as he listened on. Dante was right - it did sound scary - but at the same time, if there was some kind of secret to learn which gave him special abilities, he wanted to know what it was. When Dante chuckled, he did the same, albeit with a hint of awkwardness. "It is just legend, right? ...If the stars can sing, then what about the sun and the moon?" He didn't know what to think of it. As much as he hated being alone for too long, he wasn't sure he liked the idea of being watched all the time, either. Did stars even have eyes? The questions left him utterly perplexed.
He was relieved when the topic changed, and he could focus instead on things which were easier to understand and imagine. He listened carefully as Dante listed the many natural wonders he had experienced, or had at least heard of. Axel's tail began to wag lightly again as he tried to process everything he was hearing. There was just so much! It made him happy to see Dante so excited, and the thought of all the new adventures they could have only made him more excited, too. "I want to see it all!" He looked up at his friend in wonder, and after a moment's pause he added, "Especially the mushrooms. I really liked the ones we found earlier."
As he thought about it all, he closed his eyes for a moment and stretched out his forepaws, gently placing his head on top of them. As excited as he was, he was beginning to feel quite tired, and decided he might as well make the most of the cosy hollow before their next adventure began.

[googlefont=Quicksand:700] ≠ Dante ≠ Dante looked expectantly at Axel, excitement in his eyes as he watched for a reaction to his onslaught of information. Though he was met with confusion, it only caused him to lean forward more, a teasing smile on his face. He knew his tribe’s beliefs were likely very uncommon, but that never deterred him from wanting to share them. Especially with Axel. He felt he easily could, even if they had just met. His ears perked forward upon him asking if it was just a legend, his tone indicating to Dante that he should probably ease off of the topic for now. After all, the last thing he wanted to do was scare his new friend away. But he thought about it for a moment. The legend of the singing stars was widely believed by his tribe, the knowledge imparted to them by the generations of wisemen who had watched the tribe grow and flourish, so it came as no surprise when he first learned about it, and that most everyone thought it to be true. They had no reason to doubt the wisemen. But he wondered, unsure himself if he could put his full faith into it. He yearned to, and some nights he swore he did. Perhaps, he partially believed it. Perhaps, to him, it was less about the superficial singing and more about the principle behind it. Even though Dante knew he probably shouldn’t press on the topic, seeing as how it made his friend uneasy, he wanted to answer honestly. “I don't know if the sun and moon sing, but like the stars, I grew up with the belief that they are alive. Not in the sense that you and I are alive, but, 'alive' in a more… incorporeal way. Given a soul, just like us.” He used the term ‘alive’ loosely. Realistically he knew that celestial bodies were inanimate and could never breathe life, but his deep connections to spirituality and things otherworldly gave rise to a new line of thinking, one he wholeheartedly believed. “I think they're immortal. They never go away, put out there to watch over us. In return, we give them something to remember. From the earth below us to the trees around us—” he looked up at the ceiling of the hollow that comfortably enveloped them, a fondness on his youthful face. “To even the mountains and beyond!”He drew to a stop, his speech ended, his expression softening. “But you’re right, it is only a legend.”When the topic changed, Dante was delighted to see Axel buzz with excitement, exclaiming how he wanted to see it all. Especially the mushrooms! His reaction got a laugh out of the russet male. “You gotta be careful though to not eat too many of the mushrooms! Some can be a bit of a hallucinogenic.” He warned playfully. Watching his brown and cream friend stretch out and get comfortable made Dante realize again his exhaustion, and soreness, especially in his shoulder. There was still so much he could tell Axel but he figured for now he would spare him the details. A nice nap sounded enchanting, especially as the late afternoon sun began to seep into the opening of the hollow, casting a gentle ray of light into the dark, cool space. Zawki

Knowing Dante was clearly passionate about the topic, Axel tried his best to make sense of what he was hearing, but he still couldn't hide a look of uncertainty. The perspective was all so new to him. Yet, after a moment's pause, it suddenly all seemed to fall into place. "Do you think that's why the sun and moon move?" he asked, staring at Dante as though he had just solved all the world's mysteries. "Where I'm from, some say it's the light of our ancestors as they journey across the sky, but what if the sun and moon are more like..." Axel paused for a moment, looking thoughtful. "Like fruit! And they roll through the sky." He could only keep his composure for a moment before he started laughing at his own idea, but he still continued anyway. "Imagine if the whole world is just one giant piece of fruit. The plants eat it with their roots, then animals eat the plants." By now he was smiling wildly, knowing all too well that he'd just derailed the conversation from its more serious roots, but with no clear answers, his guess seemed as good as any. To him, at least.
"Are many mushrooms edible?" he asked, realising his friend seemed to know a lot about them. "If we get hungry, maybe we could go and eat the ones we found earlier!" Just thinking about it made him curious. Although he had felt no inclination to try them at the time, perhaps that just meant he had been missing out.
As Axel settled down against the cool wall of the hollow, he gave a contented sigh. After a long day of adventure and excitement, a chance to relax and think about everything Dante had told him so far seemed like just what he needed. Yet, it was only a few moments before another thought occurred to him, causing him to open one eye and gaze at his friend with a slight smile. "Hey, Dante? Is it just me, or is it starting to get cold?"

[googlefont=Quicksand:700] ≠ Dante ≠ "Do you think that's why the sun and moon move?" asked Axel. Dante looked at him with bewilderment. He had never thought of it like that but the more he ruminated, the more it made sense to him. He had always approached the topic of the sun and moon moving with a grounded dose of logic — day and night, the natural cycles. Perhaps in a similar vein, their souls enabled them to move; to make their cycles. As Axel continued speaking, he drew Dante’s attention in more until he was practically leaning towards him with perked ears and interested eyes. When he paused, so did Dante, and he waited with anticipation for his friend to finish his thought. "Like fruit! And they roll through the sky." The idea hit Dante like a brick. He was not expecting that analogy in the slightest and he lay in silence for a moment. Then the image of it hit him, as did the sound of Axel’s laughter, which paired together only made the situation funnier. He laughed, listening to his friend as he continued on. “Now that is a world I would love to live in, personally.” He looked up, looking thoughtful for a moment. “And then we eat the animals? I guess in a way, we’re kinda like fruits. Soft and squishy on the inside.” He cackled, his smile wide and his lips contorting into a playful grimace at what he was implying. He brought a pale paw up to poke at his other paw, watching with boyish amusement at the way his skin gave way beneath the slight pressure. He pretended to gag for dramatic effect. Axel asked if mushrooms were edible, to which Dante nodded his head eagerly. “They are! There are so many different types — so many varieties of taste, texture, and nutrition. You can even cook them down with fire and pair them with berries or meat.” He tilted his head. “Sounds like we’ll have to go back and get more, then! Mushrooms grow to nurture us, after all. They’re pretty, but they’re not meant to be gawked at forever.” He snickered. There was a lull in the conversation which allowed Dante to readjust himself, having become excited after the continual joking with Axel. He cozied up against the wall of the hollow, digging into the soft dirt, and closed his eyes, feeling content in the darkness they brought. He easily could have drifted off to sleep but his friend’s voice prompted his eyelids to open again in curiosity. Was it cold? As he was, he couldn’t tell, but he raised a paw to touch the ray of sunlight that filtered in through the hollow’s entrance. He felt an immediate difference as the light hit him. It certainly was colder. “You’re right!” he exclaimed softly, looking at Axel with surprise. “I hadn’t even noticed.”Zawki

Axel couldn't help but laugh softly as his friend played along with his wild idea, comparing himself to fruit. "That's just because you need more muscle!" he teased, a playful spark in his eyes. He paused, tilting his head to one side. "But fruit doesn't eat fruit. Maybe we're more like trees." He had already lost the trail of thought that led him to the idea, but he couldn't stop now. "We grow fur, and they grow leaves," he pointed out. "Don't you think pine needles kind of look like fur?"
He gave his head a light shake, trying to calm the storm of ideas and questions before he overwhelmed his friend. He couldn't remember ever being so excited about a conversation. Thinking carefully, Axel chose one topic from what his friend had said about the mushrooms to focus on next. "I never knew fire could be used like that," he commented. Trying to stifle a yawn, he added with a smile, "I know where we should go in the morning."
When Dante agreed that the air had turned cooler, Axel's ears perked up. He didn't realise it actually was colder, probably thanks to his thick fur, but that only made things better. Yet, when Dante stayed where he was, Axel couldn't stop his ears from drooping a little. "That's one thing I miss about pack life," he commented casually. "It was always easier to stay warm together." He put his head back down and closed his eyes, but after a couple of seconds, he couldn't resist peeking a little to see if his friend had finally caught on.

[googlefont=Quicksand:700] ≠ Dante ≠ Thick brows quirked up as Axel humored Dante, who couldn’t contain the cackle that bubbled up from his chest. “Muscle? I think I have plenty for the both of us,” he teased with a sly smile. If his friend were any closer, he would reach out and press his shoulder like he did with his paw. He brought up a good point, however — fruit indeed didn’t eat other fruit, but by the time the auburn male began to consider the new thought, Axel was proposing they were more like trees instead. He blinked at him and it was evident through his dumb expression that the gears were turning. He hummed in contemplation. “Yeah… yeah they do look like fur. I never thought of it that way.” Axel had a way of surprising Dante with each new idea, but fortunately, he loved surprises. “Fire can be used in so many different ways,” he perked up slightly, looking around excitedly, completely ignoring the tree roots encasing them. “Maybe… I don’t think this forest would have the materials but, I should show you sometime! Fire was a vital resource back home, it drew everyone together.” He looked at Axel warmly. “But, let’s save that for the winter when it’s cold. Mushroom hunting sounds easier—” A big yawn escaped his mouth, cutting his sentence short. “You gave me your yawn,” he said playfully. Dante's head tilted slightly at Axel’s change in demeanor and comment about pack life. He agreed wholeheartedly. After all, it had been only a few months since he fled from his home, leaving everything he had known behind. Life as a loner, though, hadn’t been terrible. He was free, with nothing to tie him down, no responsibilities or reputations to maintain. Although, even without the familial tether, he could still feel the ghostly traces of his family’s presence at his side. “Exactly, that’s why fire was so important to us. It provided warmth in the col—” When he noticed Axel’s eye peeking at him, the realization hit him like a hoof. “Oh!” His shoulders bounced as he laughed and he shook his head. He hadn’t even realized Axel was talking about something entirely different. “Are you cold?”Before waiting for an answer, the auburn male rose to his paws, as best he could, crouching a little to not bump his head against the hollow’s ceiling. Ignoring the dull pain in his shoulder from where he tumbled earlier, he moved towards his friend, passing by the entrance and feeling the warmth of the sun touch his fur. In contrast, the air around him felt colder. Plopping down next to his friend, he nestled into the cushy dirt, already feeling the warmth from Axel’s fur as it grazed against his. He looked at him and smiled toothily. “Better?”Zawki

Axel's cheeks were beginning to hurt from all the smiling. He couldn't even deny it when Dante mentioned having enough muscle for the both of them. He had always been one of the smaller members of his pack, and although it used to make him feel somewhat out of place, it was just amusing having it acknowledged by his friend. Unless of course, Dante was just pretending to be stronger than he actually was. Axel couldn't quite tell, but that made it even better. He smiled even more when Dante agreed with his point.
The topic of fire had him tilting his head to one side. "But isn't fire dangerous?" He couldn't help asking the question, considering all he had heard about forest fires. He shook his head a moment later as if to dismiss the question, telling himself Dante would know what he's doing. His friend seemed very passionate about the topic, and it only made him more curious. "I would love to see it sometime! But mushroom hunting sounds fun, too," he added, unable to stop himself from chuckling slightly as Dante yawned as well. "Maybe you stole my yawn!"
Dante started talking about fire again, and for a moment, Axel wasn't sure whether or not his friend would catch on, but it wasn't long before he did. Axel's only response was a sheepish grin; he hadn't thought about what he would do if it actually worked. He wasn't used to huddling, except into his own fur, but he liked the idea of being so close.
His tail began wagging quickly as his friend joined him. He dared put his head on Dante's back once he had settled, letting it sink into the soft fur. "Better," he responded softly, his eyes already closed as he felt the weariness returning. Yet, he couldn't help but laugh a little, lifting his head again to look at his friend. "This is so awkward," he commented, assuming his friend felt the same, but his smile and the laughter in his voice gave away that he liked it nonetheless. "We could be the 'angry squirrel pack'," he decided, nestling his cheek back into Dante's fur. He was soon cosy enough that he felt like he could stay there all day.

[googlefont=Quicksand:700] ≠ Dante ≠ Dante nodded in response to Axel’s inquiry about fire being dangerous. It had the capacity to destroy ecosystems and lives, but at the same time, nourish them, starting them anew. Ultimately it was the will of nature that had the final say and playing with fire was a fool’s game. When handled carelessly, it burned even the most skilled handlers. “It is,” he reaffirmed, a thoughtful solemnity in his voice. “But that doesn’t mean we should fear it. It burns our forests but nourishes the ground, laying the foundation for new life to take root. The same can be said about food. It turns it into something new, and delicious.” He smiled to himself, thinking about the festivities that would usually take place during autumn and winter in his homeland, and though he was no longer physically connected to them, he had no plans of not celebrating. "Maybe you stole my yawn!" The auburn man scoffed as if Axel had said the most preposterous thing! “Surely you jest,” he played along, “You obviously gave it to me first.”The weight of Axel’s head on his back sunk him further into the ground and immediately Dante rested his chin on the dirt in front of him. He closed his eyes and smiled at his response, and chuckled at his comment about it being awkward. “I can move if you want,” he teased but made no genuine effort to follow through, as it was evident in his voice he did not mean it. Physical touch was one of the auburn man’s many comforts, even if shared with someone he met only a short while ago. None of that mattered to him. All that did was that he and Axel were comfortable. His ears began to droop from the overwhelming comfort but they perked up at the mention of ‘the angry squirrel pack.’ He laughed. “Would we… have an army of angry squirrels? Or be constantly chased by them? That sounds exhausting, but we would be a feared pack, that’s for sure,” he said idly, exhaustion slurring his words a little as his eyes fluttered shut again. He was unsure if his friend would respond, likely already being lulled to sleep by their closeness and shared warmth. Dante wouldn’t be too far behind but he couldn’t help but fondly linger on the idea, as abstract as it was, and try to imagine how such a relationship between wolves and squirrels would function. Axel listened curiously as Dante elaborated about fire. A small smile appeared on his face when his friend mentioned food. "You have got to show me sometime!" He already knew he wanted to see how Dante could use fire, but the idea of a delicious reward made it all the better. The thought of it only got him more excited to try the mushrooms they had found, so that maybe he could try them both before and after, if his friend could find the materials to start a fire.
Axel couldn't help laughing; he had never argued about yawns before. "Well, do you at least like the gift?" he asked.
When Dante offered to move after having joined him, Axel wasted no time to respond with a quick, "No, it's alright! It's cosy." The feeling of being so close to his friend gave him a sense of warmth and comfort he hadn't felt in so long. If his friend didn't mind, he was in no hurry to give that up, and thankfully, it seemed he wouldn't have to just yet.
Despite his tiredness, he still felt so excited; the mushroom hunt they had been planning was just one of the many adventures he and his new friend could share. There was so much to learn, and he wanted to see every one of the natural wonders Dante had mentioned. Just... maybe not the singing stars. He smiled at the thought, but his attention was quickly drawn back to his friend's response to his recent comment. Axel didn't bother opening his eyes or lifting his head this time. "We could pretend to be the squirrels. And climb our cousins, the trees," he suggested. The thought of wolves in trees made him smile, but he was too tired to laugh at the concept. That didn't matter, though, as he was already considering conversation topics for their mushroom-hunting adventure.

[googlefont=Quicksand:700] ≠ Dante ≠ "You have got to show me sometime!" exclaimed his friend, whom Dante could only smile toothily at, feeling giddy all over again despite the exhaustion that weighed his body down like a weighted blanket. “It’ll be like nothin’ you’ve ever seen before.” He cackled tiredly. After a moment of stillness, he felt restless and decided to shift positions, turning onto his side and sprawling his legs out towards Axel. Immediately he felt relief in his shoulder, free from his weight. All the while his head never left the cushy dirt and after he was settled, he tilted his chin so that he could peer at his friend from his peripheral vision. On the topic of yawns, he nodded lazily, amused. “Never thought I’d consider being grateful over a yawn.”When he said it was cozy, the auburn male hummed in agreement. It had been a long time since he felt such comforting warmth. He hadn’t realized before but the hollow was gradually cooling down and if not for his friend’s invitation, he likely would have been feeling it in his sore muscles. Outside the hollow would be equally unpleasant with the sweltering heat hugging the valley, but he was neither too hot nor too cold, and it felt almost blissful. “Good,” he murmured into the dirt, again, digging into the pillowy ground. “Cuz I don’t wanna move.”"We could pretend to be the squirrels. And climb our cousins, the trees.” His ears twitched curiously but his eyes never opened. “I like the sound of that. I’m sure they would have many stories to tell us, of their grand adventures. And the trees, of all the strangers they’ve seen.”Zawki

The hollow was so cosy, Axel felt like he could fall asleep with ease. He smiled softly at the thought of learning more about what his friend knew. The concepts were all so new to him, but that only made them more exciting. A new friend, and new ways to have fun. What could be better? Axel's tail swayed lightly, although he had a feeling he would have to get used to being around fire if ever Dante showed him. 'What if it touches my fur?' Although he dreaded the thought, he had to admit to himself, it made for quite an amusing mental image. Still, he decided to save the questions for later.
He was relieved when Dante stayed, commenting that he didn't want to move. Axel's tail briefly began to wag faster. "Me neither." Not only was he cosier than he had been in a long time, he didn't feel like he had the energy to move. He could just stay, and sleep...
"Mhmm..." He barely processed what Dante said next, his head snuggled deep into his fur, and his eyes still closed. "I wonder what it would be like to be a tree..." Even his own words sounded distant, the line between reality and his wild ideas seeming to blur as he thought more about them. Before long, his breathing slowed into a gentle rhythm, but it was unlikely the day's excitement would be unable to reach his dreams.

[googlefont=Quicksand:700] ≠ Dante ≠ He could hear the subtle displacement of the soft dirt as Axel’s tag swished, amusing Dante at how much energy his friend still seemed to have, even if his nuzzling into his auburn fur told him otherwise. His distant rambling wasn’t lost on Dante, whose tired mind began to wonder what it might be like without any reservations. He hummed in contemplation. “Peaceful,” he mumbled. “Or maybe boring.” It was an experimental thought that narrowed down to perspective, and Dante could easily see both sides. He imagined what it might be like, to begin as a sapling, growing tall and soaking in the sun. “Which do you think?” He wasn’t sure if he was expecting a serious response as he lulled in and out of reality, his mind and body feeling weightless.
