[googlefont=Quicksand:700] ≠ Dante ≠ Dante examined his friend’s face after he proposed they switch up their activities, a bubble of relief and excitement welling up in his body as he seemed receptive to it. He had teased, asking what could possibly go wrong, to which the russet male laughed. Everything, he thought to himself, but that was what gave ‘mindless’ a meaning. It took Axel a moment to register what exactly Dante meant, and he internally agreed he could have done a better job at providing context, but the dots connected in no time. He hoped that that was actually what Axel was wanting to do since he seemed less and less inclined to chase the hare. It wouldn’t surprise Dante if he missed the mark, though. Social cues were admittedly lost on him, but he did his best. Axel dropped into a play bow, prompting Dante to copy him. He smiled smugly, clearly in a playful manner as his friend went on to say he would give him a head start. He stretched out his forelimbs dramatically, even exaggerated a groan and an inhale as he looked pompously at his paw still stretched out in front of him. “Pshh, head start? I don’t even need it.” He brought a paw up to rest against his chest to strike a pose, a broad grin poised proudly on his face before he looked back at Axel. “But I’ll take it!” he said quickly before turning and happily bounding off, in a rather idiotic fashion, before he cleared some distance, then began a genuine jog. He let out a belly laugh as he went, eyes darting up to the canopy in front of him as he planned where he would head next to throw Axel off a little. Dante ran and ran, checking over his shoulder every now and then to see if Axel was behind him. He bounded over some very, very big exposed tree roots before a flash of red and orange caused him to skid to a (almost) stop and trip. He became far too entranced by the large clusters of small mushrooms gathering along the bark of all the trees and became very aware of where he placed his paws, not wanting to squash any of the mushrooms. He was still in motion though, in order to avoid being nabbed by Axel, and made circular movements around the trees with their uprooted roots—there was plenty to go around to create distance. Dante wanted to look at the longer; get a closer look even, because while not as culturally significant as many other of Alkawn's symbols, mushrooms were a sign of good luck. Maybe, would Dante win in this game of tag? He leaped over a tall ledge created by the big roots onto the lower ground beneath, then turned around and stepped back, keeping his russet eyes trained on the ledge for any sign of Axel’s approach. His ears were back and his body was low to the ground, ready to jump away if his friend came barreling over the edge after him. His tail thrashed and the fur along his spine puffed up with excitement as he waited. Zawki Notes: Alkawn - nature and its forces

- Axel -
He may have told Dante he would give him a head start, but he hadn’t specified how long it would be. Two seconds seemed fair. Crouching down a little, Axel kept his eyes on his friend, ready to sprint after him as fast as he could. ’He won’t even know what hit him,’ he thought with a grin as he imagined himself leaping into the air and performing a flawless tackle. It was the perfect plan.
However… the moment he launched into a sprint, something else caught his attention, causing him to practically trip over his own paws in an attempt to stop. Glancing up, his tail began to sway lightly as he realised it was just a butterfly, gently fluttering overhead. This was the first one he had seen in a while; perhaps they too were seeking refuge from the heat. Curious, he began to follow, reaching his head up in an attempt to get closer. Maybe it would even land on his nose like they often did in those stories he had heard as a pup.
Before long, he had been trotting along happily for a while, following the butterfly deeper into the forest. Though... this didn't look like the way Dante went... 'Dante-!' Axel came to an abrupt halt, watching as his new winged companion flew further from his reach. Maybe it was time to go back and continue the chase... but what if Dante had changed direction? He had no idea where he would be by now. Although he could technically just use his tracking skills to find his friend, that would take too long and ruin the point of the game.
"Hide-and-seek it is!" he announced. It was the perfect solution, and he was sure the butterfly would agree. ...the butterfly that had already flown out of sight. With a quick sigh, Axel continued on, glancing around at his surroundings once more. The forest was so beautiful... and all the foliage meant that it would be easy to find something to hide behind. Now all he had to do was find Dante before Dante found him. Being stealthy wasn't exactly something he was good at, but he hoped his fur would at least blend in with the trees a little.
Axel padded along the forest floor, heading in the direction he thought his friend had probably gone. As much as he loved exploring the forest, everything seemed so eerily quiet all of a sudden. No thudding of paws as they ran between the trees, no joyous laughter as friends chatted and exchanged jokes... He hadn't known Dante for long at all, but everything already seemed so lonesome without him. Shifting his gaze to the ground, he paused for a moment. What if his friend was worried about him? Or worse yet, what if he had encountered some kind of danger and got hurt? 'Maybe this wasn't such a good idea after all...'
"Dante!" he called, looking around the best he could. It was hard to see far beyond all the tree trunks and underbrush, but the other wolf had to be here somewhere. "Dante, are you here?" As he poked his head around a tree to get a better view of the area, Axel's expression suddenly lit up in awe. Before him, he could see red, and orange... 'The colours of autumn,' he thought. Taking a few careful steps forwards, he couldn't help but admire the scene; there were mushrooms everywhere.

[googlefont=Quicksand:700] ≠ Dante ≠ The young male waited… and waited… and waited. But the anticipation welling up in his chest and muscles began to ebb. He had been expecting his friend to come barreling over the ledge after him... but there was no burst of excitement. Only the silence became louder and louder as his pounding heart rate began to settle. Dante’s airtight stance loosened immediately upon realizing that Axel wasn’t behind him — in fact, he could no longer sense him at all. Had he rushed ahead too quickly? Had the other male tired out? …Was he hurt?! His expression hardened, eclipsed with concern as he turned his back to the wall of upturned soil and began slowly walking away, keeping his ears pricked forward and eyes alert. His ears were practically straining against the sudden plunge into silence. How peculiar. Dante looked up to the canopy. Glimpses of the sun still shone through the leaves, dappling the forest below. He exhaled, pursing his lips. “Search and rescue it is!” he proclaimed. With a clear goal in mind, Dante was preparing to leave the area, but an abrupt sound made him brake hard before he was even really going. His name! Someone was calling his name! He looked over his shoulder towards the origin of the voice. No doubt it was Axel. It was difficult to tell from the distance but he didn’t sound distressed, just lost. Whoa… how far ahead did he get? He chuckled at the thought. But before he could stand there stupidly in either awe or bewilderment, he knew what he needed to do next: hide. Axel was getting closer, or at least that was what it sounded like, so Dante quietly scrambled closer to the upturned dirt cliff again so that he could better conceal himself out of sight. He was hoping his scent had still gone unnoticed by his friend… unless all of this was some clever ruse to weed Dante out. Either way, he couldn’t fault his friend. It just gave him more meaning. Dante decided to, in order to make sure his scent was covered, rub his side against the face of the cliff, scratching against the layers of soft soil and scraggly pieces of root that poked out. Next, he gingerly grabbed one of the many, many mushrooms by the stem before whispering a quiet, “Thank you,” and gently plucking it from its spot, ensuring not to damage it any. He repeated the process with another mushroom and now had two in his teeth. Maybe he could confuse Axel with them to hide himself more. Now all that was left was to find him. With a new objective, Dante exited the shallow hollow, keeping himself low as he moved, constantly searching between the trees for that flash of cream and brown. It didn’t take long, fortunately, and he felt a wave of relief wash over him upon seeing his friend again, as distant as his figure was. Adrenaline immediately flushed through his veins. He would stalk forward carefully towards Axel, getting as close as possible while using the underbrush and various thick tree trunks as cover. If successful, he would leap out with a playful (and loud), “Boo!” — mushrooms in his jaws and all. But if he got caught… Zawki

- Axel -
Carefully crouching down to the ground, Axel decided to take a closer look at a few of the mushrooms growing from one of the trees. His tail began to shift the debris of the forest floor as he reached closer, gently touching one with his nose. He couldn't help but smile, giving a quiet laugh. 'They feel so strange,' he thought to himself, staring at them fondly. He was excited to show Dante, if he could actually find him again. That's when he realised; he was just getting distracted all over again. Axel quickly rose to his paws, looking down at the mushroom. It seemed like a shame to leave, but he could always come back later. "Goodbye!" he called, giving his new fungus friend one last grin before he padded off between the trees to continue his search.
"Dante!" he called once more, glancing around yet again. He was hoping to have found him by now. There were still a few mushrooms up ahead, but the more he looked at them, the more they reminded him of the reddish tones of his friend's fur. 'Maybe Dante turned into a mushroom.' For once, not even he believed his own wild speculation, but the light-heartedness of the thought was able to ease his worries a little as he continued to look around. For a moment, he was sure he could make out a familiar scent amidst that of the mushrooms and other forest life, but he seemed to lose track of it as quickly as he had noticed it. "Dante?" Axel hesitated for a moment, his ears alert for any signs of movement. Suddenly, a rustling sound caught his attention, causing him to swing his head in its direction. A couple of leaves fell to the ground as he looked up, noticing a small furry creature clinging onto one of the branches of a nearby tree. 'Oh!' He took a couple of steps closer, realising it was just a squirrel, and a very cute one at that. He wagged his tail happily as he gazed up into the branches, but the squirrel didn't seem to want to hang around, quickly darting off again and jumping to another tree. Intrigued to see where it was going, he was tempted to follow, but he was determined to stay focused on the task at paw; finding Dante.
'This is one of the longest games of chase I've ever played,' he mused, stopping to lower his nose to the ground briefly. Originally, he wasn't going to try tracking, but it was something he was quite good at, and it seemed like it would be worth a try given his current lack of success. When he lifted his head again, his expression was thoughtful, trying to make out the individual scents. He could make out a few different trees, and put a name to them all. He shook his head lightly with a smile. 'Why do I still remember all this?' Distracted by his thoughts, he hadn't even realised there was something approaching him. All of a sudden, a loud "Boo!" startled him back to his senses.
"Wha-!?" Springing into the air, he quickly turned to face whatever it was that had spooked him, landing in a defensive stance. He was breathing heavily and he could feel his heart racing, but the look of panic in his eyes quickly faded to relief as he realised what it was. Before him was Dante, who had somehow managed to sneak up on him despite his best efforts to find him. Axel just stood there bewildered for a moment, but it was only a couple of seconds before he began to smile, followed by sudden laughter. "You got me!" he admitted, impressed that it had actually worked. Taking a moment to catch his breath, he quickly glanced over his friend. "...What happened to your fur?" He thought he could see a few specks of dirt, but he was unsure whether it got kicked up during the panic or if it had something to do with whatever Dante had been up to after they got separated. "You didn't trip over again, did you?" he teased. Axel pushed the thought aside, changing the topic without even waiting for a response. "I've been looking for you everywhere. Where have you been?"

[googlefont=Quicksand:700] ≠ Dante ≠ Both of the males landed in defensive stances, but the look of panic in Axel’s eyes contrasted the wild mischievousness in Dante’s. His fur was puffed up playfully as his tail swayed over his spine. There was a moment of silence before his friend burst out with laughter, admitting that he had gotten him. Victory! Dante laughed through the mushrooms still in his mouth before placing them down, able to let out his joy. He was honestly quite impressed with himself for having been so successful; stealth never was his forte considering his ineptitude for graceful maneuvers. As he was able to catch his breath, he straightened his posture and puffed his chest out dramatically to punctuate his triumph. It was one to… Dante no longer bothered to keep track at this point. All he cared about was having fun with Axel. He plopped down onto his haunches again to get comfortable, taking a moment to look around the area. He was unable to get a good look earlier since he was more focused on running and hiding, but now he had a moment to soak in his environment. It was afternoon now, and though regularly the hottest time of the day, the heat was long behind him, forgotten. He was panting but his mind was too preoccupied with his friend in front of him, who, just as his russet eyes turned back to him, said something interesting. His fur? He craned his neck over his shoulder to get a glimpse of his glorious fur that couldn’t possibly be dir— it was covered in dirt. “Oops—” it slipped out in a moment of surprise as Dante bounced to his paws again, spinning one or two times in a futile attempt to see his fur better. Damn! It must’ve been when he rubbed up against the dirt earlier. He should have foreseen this. It wasn’t that he disliked being dirty on its own, but being dirty coupled with being hot was a gross combination. Plus, he had an image to uphold. Before he could even think about it he broke out into another aggressive shake which was halfway effective. Taking another look over his shoulder he groaned. He would have to fix it later. Dante’s focus went back to Axel finally. “Trip? Me? How preposterous!” he scoffed theatrically, bringing a paw to his chest in defense. It was all in good fun, something he had a feeling his perceptive friend could pick up on. “I’ll have you know, while I was running—no, gliding—” an obvious exaggeration but one he said with full confidence and amusement. “I kicked up so much dust you’d thought there had been a herd of elk.” He paused for dramatic effect. “But nay, it was just this one-man stampede.” How preposterous he was being and he knew it, but he reveled in it, unable to contain his laughter at just what he was saying. In his retelling of what had ‘happened,’ Dante remembered Axel also asked where he had been. Perking up, he didn’t hesitate speaking, “Over there! The tree roots grew four-fold in size and were absolutely covered in mushrooms.” It was blatant how much the idea excited Dante as he reverted back to an excited pup telling his parents about something totally cool and awesome he had just discovered. “Wanna go look? The roots have pulled up from the soil that’ve left little hollows under them. You could practically feel the coolness radiating from them.”Zawki

- Axel -
He couldn't help but smile as he watched Dante spin around for a moment, but quickly braced himself as his friend stopped to shake the dirt from his pelt. Axel shook his head to remove anything that had landed in his own fur, merely out of instinct; getting dirty was all part of the fun to him, after all. "You missed a spot," he commented light-heartedly, trying to hide his amusement as he took a couple of steps closer and gave his friend's shoulder a gentle lick, brushing away a bit of leftover dirt. Suddenly, he hesitated, realising just what it was he was doing. For a moment, they were getting along so well that he had forgotten they weren't even packmates. He took a step back, giving a sheepish grin.
As Dante explained what he had been up to, Axel raised an eyebrow playfully, expressing his silent doubt. Yet, the theatrics only made the story more amusing. He listened intently, trying not to laugh too much as he imagined the scene, not wanting to interrupt the tale. By the time it was over, however, he couldn't keep his composure any longer, immediately laughing along with his friend, almost uncontrollably. "Oh Dante, you're hilarious!" he exclaimed. "That's even more ridiculous than angry squirrels!" The image of the russet-furred wolf just zooming along, kicking up a massive trail of dust... it was one he knew he wouldn't be able to get out of his head for a while, but it was also one which entertained him greatly. It seemed he had found someone who shared his sense of humour, and even just the thought of it made his tail sway.
Before he'd had a chance to catch his breath again, or even finish laughing for that matter, his attention was quickly drawn once more as Dante continued to answer the flurry of questions he had asked. His friend enthusiastically told him about the mushrooms growing nearby, at which point, Axel's expression lit up with excitement. "You saw them too?" He didn't even hesitate to reply. "I was just thinking about how much I wanted to show you!" In the rush of the moment, he bounded in circles around Dante a few times before finally stopping in front of him, meeting his gaze with his tail swaying happily behind him. "It sounds wonderful."
Not only would he get to see the mushrooms again, he would also get to admire them with Dante and relax in the cool hollows beneath the roots of the trees. 'Company, beautiful scenery, and a break from the heat? Could it get any better?' He was so excited that he couldn't resist running ahead a little, practically leaping into the air as he turned to face his friend once more, the foliage on the ground rustling beneath his paws. "Lead the way!" he called, realising whose suggestion it had been to visit the hollows in the first place. Even if he had seen the mushrooms already, he just knew it would be every bit as amazing as last time.

[googlefont=Quicksand:700] ≠ Dante ≠ Being preoccupied with cleaning his elbow on the side he used to rub against the dirt, a sudden unforeseen ticklish sensation on his other side made the fur along his spine prickle. He jolted on instinct, whipping his head around only to see Axel wiping away the remaining dirt on his russet fur. Dante paused, processing what he had done, then his words registered. Oh, Dante missed a spot. He stepped back, looking almost embarrassed, at which Dante could only grin. “Why thank you, I didn’t even notice there was dirt there.” he said goofily without missing a beat. He had been in that spot before and the last thing he wanted was for Axel to feel like he had done something wrong, or let that embarrassment linger or let him feel like he made things awkward. In all honesty, Dante didn’t feel that way at all. Pride surged through him at the response he earned from his friend. He continued to play along. “Hilarious? Ridiculous?? My, it’s the truth! I’m convinced I even saw your angry squirrel race along the tree roots beside me.” he teased, a mischievous glint in his eyes as he began to horribly reenact what the scene might’ve looked like. From hunkering low to the ground and contorting his face to mimic an angry growling squirrel, to lightly running in place and pretending to coolly dodge and maneuver around fake obstacles in his path. Theatrics like these came naturally to Dante, and while he may have been considered a fool for being inclined to act this way or telling such fantasies, he did it because it was fun. Especially if allowed to do so in the company of another who could share in his humor. “You saw them too?” His big ears perked up at Axel’s response. So he’d seen the mushrooms too? And wanted to show him?? He watched excitedly as his friend bounded around him a few times. The joy that radiated from him was contagious—as if the joy Dante felt wasn’t already palpable. “Excellent!” he exclaimed before running after him after he told him to lead the way, which Dante happily obliged. Pushing forward, he could hear their paw steps beat the ground in tandem as the underbrush rustled in their wake. For once he was able to run with his new friend at his side. It didn’t take them long to get to the place Dante mentioned, as the scenery became familiar once more. Tall trees, all sorts of massive upturned roots tangled together giving rise to the hollows underneath, vibrant mushrooms growing on the bark. It was truly a remarkable location. He turned to Axel as his face lit up as if silently saying how cool this place was. He walked forward, moving over the chunks of roots and carefully around the clusters of fungi as he made his way towards the hollows. He was unsure if Axel would follow him or take a moment to explore the area, but he tossed him an inviting smile over his shoulder nonetheless. Picking a particularly large hollow, he shimmied into it, making sure to leave enough room for his friend if he chose to join him. He nestled onto his side, practically melting into the cool, soft, almost pillowy soil that was just so comfortable, cushioning his muscles and cooling his fur. The hollow was nicely shaded, shaped in a near-perfect dome, and the entrance wasn’t too obvious either. Dante could easily spend the rest of the day and night here, and that was most likely going to be the case because he knew he was going to be sore. Zawki

- Axel -
As Dante took the lead, Axel followed, the excitement still evident in his every move. It seemed like every time they tried running, something got in the way; a bush, a butterfly, whatever it was that had caused Dante to fall... but this time, he was determined not to stray far from his friend's side. He was still smiling widely, but not just because of where they were going. Dante's wild performance remained fresh in his mind, causing him to reimagine the various scenes as they ran.
It wasn't long at all before they got there. Axel wasn't sure whether to be glad he didn't have to wait any longer, or be sad that the run was over already. Either way, his thoughts were soon distracted as he laid eyes on the scene once more. Since Dante had mentioned the hollows and the tree roots, everything suddenly seemed even more magical than before. The first time, he had been too awestruck by the brightly-coloured mushrooms to truly even notice, but now it looked like something out of a fairy tale. "It's so beautiful..." He glanced at his friend, and it was clear from the look of wonder they shared that they both felt the same way. When Dante went over to one of the hollows and silently invited him along, Axel's excitement only seemed to grow. His tail was swaying happily as usual as he bounded after him once more, but just before he could reach the entrance of the hollow, something else caught his attention, causing him to pause.
He carefully made his way around the roots and mushrooms, padding over to where a few wildflowers grew between the underbrush. He couldn't put a name to them, but it didn't matter; they were a beautiful shade of yellow, complimenting the reds and oranges of the mushrooms wonderfully. Reaching out carefully, Axel plucked a few from the ground, holding them gently between his teeth. They were perfect.
Eager to accept Dante's invitation, he began to make his way back to the hollow, allowing his innate sense of direction to guide him. Between what he had seen and the fresh tracks left behind, it didn't take him long to find the spot where his friend had disappeared. Noticing the hole that led into the hollow, he carefully poked his head inside. Sure enough, Dante was there. Axel smiled in greeting, but he didn't dare to speak in case he dropped or damaged the wildflowers he was carrying. As he stepped further in, he stretched out his legs, happy to have a chance to rest after a long day of activity. It really was wonderfully cool inside, just like his friend had said. He placed the bright yellow wildflowers down by Dante's forepaws as he turned to face the hollow's entrance, lying up against the wall on the other side. As he felt the cool surface against his fur, he gave a sigh of relief, relishing the way it felt... but it only lasted for a moment before he gave a quite laugh, accompanied by a grin of amusement as he came to a sudden realisation. "Now we're both going to be covered in dirt!"
Turning his attention back to his friend, Axel explained, "I found these flowers nearby, and together with the mushrooms, they reminded me of the colourful leaves of autumn. It's my favourite season, so I thought..." His words trailed off as he glanced to one side, trying to find the right words. "I... wanted you to have them. As a symbol of our friendship," he said at last, looking up at Dante. The moments they had shared together so far had been the most fun he'd had in what felt like ages, and he wanted his friend to know that. By Dante's side, it felt like everything was an adventure.

[googlefont=Quicksand:700] ≠ Dante ≠ Dante leaned back onto his shoulder, his body pressed up against the side wall of the hollow. Even the bark felt cool, maybe even so slightly damp. He turned his nose towards the bark and gave it a gentle sniff, the calming smell of earthy must filling his head and heart. A calm washed over him, causing him to relax further into the soil, if that was even possible. He felt every part of his body loosen, like a great weight suddenly falling off of his muscles. Even his eyelids felt heavy so he allowed them to close. A shuffling noise came from the entrance but he never opened his eyes; he didn’t even flinch. Whether it was because he felt too tired to react, or because he knew it was Axel and he felt comfortable enough to not feel like reacting, he wasn’t entirely sure. Suddenly he spoke, saying how they were both going to be covered in dirt. It brought an immediate smile to Dante’s muzzle and he opened his eyes, chuckling. He didn’t care at this point if he got dirty. He was comfortable, too heavy and too light at the same time. It took him a moment but he finally noticed the flash of bright yellow near his forepaws, and when he looked down his russet eyes widened. Flowers? He looked at Axel curiously, an inquisitive look strewed on his face. He was pretty certain those weren’t there when he crawled in so… Realization hit and a wide grin replaced his puzzled features. But he didn’t have to say anything for his friend to say that he wanted him to have the flowers, as a symbol of their friendship. A shy giggle bubbled out of Dante’s throat involuntarily. How adorable, he thought while looking at the wildflowers for a moment to take in their beauty. There was so much appreciation to be had for the things of nature, and the people in it. He placed a protective paw over the stems, exerting utmost caution not to damage the delicate petals or buds. “I will cherish them,” he said with a goofy but sincere smile, his eyes soft. With gentle movements he scooted the flowers closer to himself and he placed his chin on the ground. He was aiming to pull the flowers onto his head, preferably around his ears but he wasn’t sure if he was successful. They were on his head at least, which was enough for him. He didn’t want to move his chin now in fear of the flowers falling off so instead he stayed put, all the sudden feeling oh so very, very comfortable. He felt practically one with the soil. After a long, deep exhale, his eyes returned to Axel’s. “Your favorite season’s autumn?” he asked, Axel’s earlier words only now registering in his mind. He was so focused on his offering of flowers that he hardly acknowledged the other things his friend said. “So’s mine!” he said excitedly, although quietly. They were in a smaller space now, there was no need to speak loudly. “All the lovely colors and smells, and the cooler weather,” he stuck his tongue out childishly in disgust as if mocking the hot weather that currently settled over the valley. “But maybe... come this autumn we can get up to some adventures again? There are some really cool phenomena that happen during the harvest.” He spoke as though there was super top secret information on the tip of his tongue; like he was about to disclose some kind of deep secret, contrasted with the faux smug smile on his face, meant to indicate he knew some pretty neat stuff about the season. - Axel -
Although there wasn't as much room in the hollow, it didn't stop Axel's tail from wagging still, brushing up against the loose walls of the interior. Dante liked the flowers! He gave a light chuckle as he watched his friend try to position the wildflowers on his head. Despite the low light now that they were hidden away from the sun, he could still make out the way the bright yellow complimented his friend's reddish gold fur. Perhaps… the flowers and the mushrooms weren’t the only things which reminded him of autumn.
“Your favorite season’s autumn?” Dante's words almost caught him off guard.
"Mhm!" Axel nodded quickly, silently hoping he hadn't been caught staring. It was hard not to, when the wolf beside him looked as colourful as the autumn leaves themselves. There was so much he wanted to say about the season, but before he could get another word in, Dante went on to explain that it was his favourite season, too. Axel's tail only began to wag faster, and he listened intently as his friend continued. He couldn't help but laugh at Dante's reaction to the weather, glancing back at the entrance to the hollow as he remembered the summer heat. The cooler seasons would be a welcome change for sure.
As he returned his gaze to his friend, he was suddenly met with the suggestion that they should meet up again come autumn. "Yes!" Dante had barely finished talking before Axel sprang to his paws, unable to contain his excitement at the thought. In that moment, he felt his head knock against the roof of the hollow, and he closed his eyes with something between a grimace and a smile as he was showered with a thin layer of loose soil. He carefully shook the dirt from his head before laying back down, unsure whether to feel embarrassed or amused. "I would love that," he answered more calmly, though he still couldn't hide the glint of excitement in his eyes as he looked back at his friend. "But you've gotta tell me more!" Dante's words had intrigued him, and it suddenly felt like there were some amazing secrets he was missing out on.

[googlefont=Quicksand:700] ≠ Dante ≠ Axel’s mhm didn’t go unnoticed by Dante, whose head remained rested on the ground in contentment. His tail thumped behind him rhythmically with his, he hadn’t even realized it until his friend suddenly shot up from his previous position in sheer excitement before whacking his head against the roof of the hollow. Dante’s own head shot up in shock, the wildflowers sitting precariously on his head slipping his mind, and it wasn’t until he perceived his smile that a cross between a snort and a chuckle escaped him. “I would love that.” he answered after he composed himself, which made the scene all the more amusing. Dante was going to ask if he was alright but Axel turned the subject around by telling him he had to tell him more! The reddish male perked up at that, he had no reason to be surprised that he was asked for elaboration, but nobody outside of his birth pack was ever too curious. “Okay! Uh—” He fumbled for a moment as a big smile crossed his mouth, excitement and pride swelling in his chest. He leaned back on his elbow, pressing back into the wall of the hollow, in an attempt to act all cool and smug. “My tribe did something we called the Haerfest, which is basically a big celebration for the coming of autumn!” His ‘smug’ front collapsed completely as he began his explanation, his eyes bright with remembrance and fondness. “Have you ever heard of gourds? They’re these funny looking… plants? I think? Er—no, fruit! That’s it! But during the fall we would harvest them and hold these games where we would roll them down a hill to see whose was faster, then afterwards we would smash them! See who could smash their’s the hardest. It was a great stress reliever.” He cackled as he went on, lost in the memory of it. Dante paused for a moment to think before his face lit up again. “Oh and! I’m sure this valley would be the same, but where I’m from, cloudless, moonless autumn night skies would light up. You’ve probably already seen it, but man—” he shook his head. He was sure that he would never tire of seeing it. “The sky is so dense with stars that the sky is hardly even perceptible. We called it the Celestial Season. I’ll have to show you sometime! The view of it atop a mountain summit is just… spectacular. It’s like the stars are just within reach.”Zawki

As Axel listened to Dante's story, he tried his best to take in every detail. A tribe, a celebration; he tried to piece together the images in his head to get a glimpse of the scene. He wasn't sure he understood what gourds were, but the thought of the competition made him smile. Finding the perfect one sounded like a game of hide-and-seek, with another game at the end. He imagined searching with care until he was sure he had found a plant-fruit-thingy unlike the rest, then sharing with it his hopes of winning as he gently nudged it down the hill... but as Dante explained what they do with the gourds at the end, Axel's ears suddenly pinned back in surprise. "Oh." He laughed softly as he realised that it might be best not to take too much pride in them after all.
Already, he wanted to ask so many questions, but he could tell his friend had more to say. His tail had resumed its wagging as Dante continued, and his smile softened into a look of wonder as he imaged a bright night sky overhead, starlight flitting between the red and orange leaves of trees. The thought of sharing the moment together only made it better.
"The view of it atop a mountain summit is just… spectacular. It’s like the stars are just within reach.”
"It sounds amazing," he said at last, imagining the stars like tiny specks of snow sparkling in the sky. "What do you think the stars taste like?" He couldn't help but wonder, tilting his head to one side. "Oh, and your tribe! How many are there? Are they friendly? Do they live near here?" He didn't even leave time to respond between each question, his tail only wagging faster as he thought about it all. Dante's culture seemed so different to his own, and it left him eager to learn more.

[googlefont=Quicksand:700] ≠ Dante ≠ As Dante calmed down a little from his word spewing and excitement of remembering everything he could at once to tell his friend, he pressed himself back against the wall of cool soil. Axel said that it sounded amazing, his mentioning of the celestial seasons and the stars that shone so brightly. Dante nodded his head vigorously, a smile present on his mouth. Despite how heavy and tired his body felt, he still had so much energy; he felt like he could talk to his new friend for hours and hours on end. Suddenly Axel asked what the stars would taste like, giving Dante pause. What an unusual question. His head tilted as his russet eyes cast down in contemplation, evident he was taking the question seriously. It was weird, admittedly but he liked weird. “Hmm,” he mused absentmindedly, trying to think of an answer. “Probably hot…” he chuckled. “I imagine they’re no different from the sun.” He lifted a paw at the thought but froze it in midair as a sharp pain struck his shoulder from where he had fallen earlier during their hunt. He hid the pain well, or so he believed, as his smile faltered only slightly along with a twitch of his eye. He set it back down carefully, his attention back on Axel as if it had never even left. Dante was glad he did because as soon as he returned his attention to him he had a mountain of questions! He perked up a little as he couldn’t contain the energy that went straight to his tail as it began to wag in tandem with Axel’s. “Um! Well we probably weren’t the biggest in the valley but as far as the mountains went, we definitely won out.” he shot Axel a wink and a cheeky grin, all too proud to be talking (bragging?) about his tribe. “Friendly? All we ever knew was accommodation!” he laughed. “We were built on the purpose of peace and preservation.” It was a quote that had been ingrained in him since he could remember, and also a reminder of how the tribe had emerged from a time when that had once not been the case. Dante felt a solemn weight on his heart at the thought. He didn’t want to suddenly be a downer though so he perked back up again, prepared to answer Axel’s third question with excitement. “Oh no, far from here! Maybe… maybe valleys away. I’m not sure how far I traveled but it was no mere day trip. The valley was so expansive each region had its own climate.” He had never ventured out of the territory a whole lot but there were a few times he was called upon by the council to embark on scouting expeditions with a select team. Only then did he see what lay beyond the familiar mountains he knew as home, and only then did he get to see just a fraction of how vast and beautiful the world was. He looked at Axel, eyes curious. “What about you? Are you far from home too?”Zawki

"Huh..." Axel thought about what Dante had said about the stars. "I always thought they'd be cold, like snow, because it gets cold when the moon and the stars come out. I've never thought of them that way before." His friend seemed to have such unique ideas and perspectives. Eager to hear more stories, Axel snuggled deeper into his part of the hollow to get more comfortable before looking back up at the russet wolf.
When Dante winked at him, his tail wagged a bit faster, and he returned the smile. The mountains sounded amazing, but even better was the mention of accommodation. 'I wonder what kinds of things they like,' he thought. If they were friendly, then he wanted to show them that he was friendly, too. Maybe then they wouldn't mind if he decided to stay with... “Oh no, far from here!" Dante's words suddenly cut through his thoughts, shaking him back to reality.
"Oh." He looked up at his friend, then down at his paws. "I guess that means we won't be able to visit." He forced a wry smile, resting his head on his paws as he tried to forget the idea. Who needed a whole family of wolves like Dante anyway, when the real one was right here? It surprised him when his friend asked a question of his own. Axel met his gaze, deciding not to move his head at first. It was cosy here. Yet, when he saw the curiosity in his friend's eyes, he couldn't help but smile for real this time, lifting his head after all. "Yeah. At least, this is the furthest I've been on my own." He paused to lick a bit of the dust from his paws, wondering where to begin. Looking back at his friend, he added, "Well, I'm not on my own anymore, of course! You're here." He laughed softly. "What I mean is, I usually just kept to the territory. It was a beautiful place, and if I volunteered to patrol the territory, I didn't even have to do any of the hunting." He lowered his gaze a little, smiling at the thought. "I'm still not used to things like that," he admitted. "Chasing prey, and worrying about where I'm going to get food or water. It's been such an adventure, though! I found this place, and met you, and oh, all the things just waiting to be discovered!" He looked back into Dante's eyes, his own sparkling with excitement. "What other secrets do you think this forest holds?"

[googlefont=Quicksand:700] ≠ Dante ≠ His head tilted to the side as a gold and copper-rimmed ear fell in contemplation at his friend’s interesting perspective on stars. Dante had never thought it in that way, of them being cold. He smiled at the thought. “Likewise. I was always told that the sun and stars were no different. Just… floating balls of light. Maybe because they are so hot they’ll taste cold! Or even the other way around… like when you dip your paw in a lake during winter, and it feels almost hot.” He laughed at the thought. “But I doubt that would taste good in your mouth.”Dante leaned towards Axel a little bit as if about to pass along a highly classified secret. “But did you know the stars could sing?” His smile widened. “I’ve never heard them myself, but back home there was a popular legend told by the wisemen that on the quietest of celestial nights, on the highest of mountain peaks, the stars sang to them. It’s a gift apparently, but one you can learn.” Leaning the back of his head against the cool wall of the hollow he looked up at the dirt ceiling. “According to them, stars are massive. The deeper the song the bigger the star, and some would say their songs rattled their very bones. Kinda scary if you think about it,” he chuckled. “Or hearing a distant high-pitched harmony.”Dante was momentarily lost in thought before Axel’s voice reached him again, his sudden shift in demeanor briefly worrying Dante. "I guess that means we won't be able to visit." He paused as a pang of homesickness struck his chest, wiping away the mirth he felt just moments ago. No, there was no going back now. At least, not for a long time. He self-exiled himself… and for what? To protect himself… to protect his brother? Russet eyes looked away. No. He ran. He ran when they needed him the most. He had no right to return. Their land was no longer his but his heart would always belong to them. Axel began speaking again, giving an answer of his own, drawing Dante from his thoughts once more. His eyes softened as relief washed over him as he melted into the wall behind him. He would leave those thoughts for another day. For now, he just wanted to enjoy the present with Axel. A lot of what he was explaining resonated with the russet male as he nodded along with interest. Loner life was definitely a new experience. He had never been so alone before, but in truth, it was a change that he didn’t hate entirely. After all, he was the one to, though unwillingly, turn to this lifestyle. He would have to learn how to handle it, now. Luckily, Axel’s excitement was contagious as it lifted Dante’s mood, and a smile returned to his muzzle. What other secrets were out there? Lots! “So many!” he echoed his thoughts. “Mushrooms that glow like fireflies, huge iridescent moths that flutter under the moonlight in clusters, glowworms in caves that dangle from the ceiling like stars!” His eyes sparkled. “The wonders of nature are vast and endless. Waves in the ocean that glow bright blue and streams of water that become literal rainbows… Oh! Waterfalls that look like molten lava! It’s—” he exhaled, unable to think of a word that adequately described the beauty of the natural world. “It’s… not even of this world. And I have to show it to you.”Zawki
