Timber
Thoughts| "Spoken Word | Outside Speech | Cheshire
When she thought of coming into a new valley Timber didn't account for the scorching heat. It was almost as bad as the desert when she had wandered too close to it. Her throat was dry from the thought and the lake of water. Timber was still new to the valley, but she knew enough from her travels on how to find water. It wasn't hard to follow the birds. Wherever they flocked there was bound to be water of some sort. She meandered through yellowed grass, the shoots brittle and breaking across the fur of her legs, the sound the only companionship she had. A wry smile crossed her maw, how funny, she thought, I used to be surrounded by family and then was destined to be alone and now...well I have pack of sorts but now it's like I'm alone more than every. She shook her head. This was the fate she was given. She should be thankful to be alive, besides there was a chance that she could run into another Mercurior or perhaps someone she could convince to join her.
Her gaze flickered to the sky, robins alighting and heading North. Her ears perked as the fluttering of their delicate wings hitting her ears, calling for her to follow. She picked up the pace, keeping her eyes on the birds though her ears swiveled, alert for possible danger. Being alone meant that others would think they could take advantage of you and Timber wasn't in the mood for a fight. The heat was making her fur burn and was shortening her temper, one wrong wolf trying to challenge her would make her lash out like in the days she had been left alone wandering and leave a body in her wake and doing that could be detrimental. From her observations there were three other packs here and she didn't want to make a mistake that would throw a target on her band of warriors. Her thoughts consumed her so that she didn't notice as the ground below her turned from prickling grass to dried mud, having cracked and separated from the suns rays. Only when one such crack caught her paw, making her stumble, did she realize where she was. Her hard gaze scanned the scene before her.
The mud spanned out in an odd circle and started out light brown but farther into the center the darker it was until finally leading to a small stand of water, birds gathered around it along with a few wayward deer, who stared her down as she approached. Instead of running, their desperation for water kept them in place. She ignored them, her stomach was grumbling but she was in no shape to go for a deer on her own, nor was she in the mood. These creatures were as desperate as she was. She looked down at what could hardly be described as a shallow puddle. It spanned quite a few feet in diameter but was no comparison to the size it used to be. The lone girl looked out at the water, it was murky and the backs of fish broke the surface. The poor things looked like they were destined to be boiled alive and Timber couldn't name just what emotion this was eliciting inside her.
I was made to rise above it.

His coat burned under the raging blaze of the sun. He never thought he would find himself back in this wretched land all over again. The sun-scorched brute had fled this land for a reason. That he would find himself back here during a time of drought seemed like terrible irony. He had rejected his birthplace and now his birthplace rejected him. Yet, now he returned as if fate would see him back. Perhaps his destiny was tied to this place. The land of his birth, and perhaps also, the land of his death. No matter how far he ran, the world drew him back. Punishment, perhaps, for his cowardly ways or the life he took. Pale blond eyes trailed upwards to level the sun with a apathetic hopelessness. "That you would drag me back. Have I not suffered enough." His inquiry hung answered in the air, directed at some lost ghost of his past.
[break][break]
The flame-coated brute's tail drooped. His coat had been said to have been blessed with flames. Now it seemed like nothing but the opposite. With each step, it seemed as if the very land itself drained him of energy. He had walked this path before. Back then, he had been running with the intention of never returning. Now, dry grasses crunched under his step, dust clouds rising in answer. Reminders of a dying land. His pale blond eyes trailed across the land. All that reflected was earth shrouded in a shimmering haze from the heat. If memory served, there was a lake nearby. Hopefully, it would give him reprise from his ill fate. He could only hope that whatever awaited him at the end of his journey would be worth all the pain.
[break][break]
Cresting the rise, Helios barked out a short, bitter laugh. All that remained of his salvation could not even be called a pond. A few creatures gathered desolately around it as if in mourning. Of course the land would not help him. The one time it had was when he had left it. Now it presented him with this worthless consolation prize. His gaze followed the deer's as they peered at the approach of a new figure, one he knew. His leader and Lord of the Mercurior, Timber, was making her way to the dirt spot that remained. The animals did not flee at her approach, choosing to stand their ground. They were all equal in their despair as it was. It would have made for an easy meal if it wasn't so sad.
[break][break]
"Hail, Timber," Xato called out in greeting as he slide down the sides of the bowl. At his voice, some of the creatures chose to scatter. The deer seemed to decide that two wolves was too many. They fled, but chose to remain at the edge of the hollow. The crimson brute watched their emancipated forms go with pity in his golden eyes. Fear sent them away, but desperation kept them close. Risking death for a small chance at life. He understood that feeling well. He had been privy to it much of his life. A moment of weakness breaking his usual blizzard.
[break][break]
The fiery brute regained his composure as he faced the Lord. He had kept his distance as always. Dipping his head in a respectful greeting, he began to speak, "The land is in poor health." He had stated the obvious deciding that inquiring on the fae's health was redundant. Few were doing well in the present conditions. The Cause's own coat was dull and lifeless. His eyes lacked a key spark and each step he took was heavy with fatigue. Though not all of his symptoms were due entirely to the weather.

Timber
Thoughts| "Spoken Word | Outside Speech | Cheshire
"Hail, Timber."
The familiar voice ripped her from her thoughts, she didn't have to turn her head to see who called out to her. She had heard his voice enough to know it was Helios, her second in command. A serious man made of the rays of the sun. From the first time she met him he had untouchable and even now-with their ranks close together-there was still a distance between them and it bothered the she wolf, but this was his way and their group was not a pack. There were days that she had to remind herself of that. The hardest moments were the mornings when she would wake up from a nightmare, still feeling the drag of her ex-mates claws in the skin of her paw, and find herself alone with a heaving chest and fear filled eyes. It was a blessing and curse. She was lucky no one else had to see her in such a time of weakness, though it would be nice to be able to turn around and find comfort in the fur of another. It hurt her heart to remind herself that-despite the others in her group-she was utterly, completely alone and the approach of her Cause she felt the overwhelming reminder that she had no true companion in her wanderings.
Finally she turned her gaze to Helios, catching the last glimpse of him sliding into the hallow, dust thrown into the air behind him-a cloud to remind them that nothing was what it was meant to be. Of course he kept space between them as he came nearer and his formality continued to show through-not even the heat could break down this brute. "I think we are all in poor health." She croaked. Dear God how long had it been since she had to speak to another? She couldn't recall. "Perhaps I should have listened to your protests when I presented the idea of coming here." Even with the sun burning through her fur and her throat cracking from the dry air she could still make a joke, a smile tugging across her splitting lips. There was a splash, something cold and slimy hit the the she wolf's paw, causing her to look down to find a fish flopping in front of her, mouth gasping and fighting for air. Her smile turned to a frown-without a second thought she pushed the thing back into the water, watching it slip away into the muddy depths, though its dorsal fin broke water and she wondered if she just condemned that creature to further torture instead of ending its life then and there.
"Or, perhaps we are here at the right place, just the wrong time." She added, turning to look at Helios once again as her mind started to turn gears of thoughts. "Maybe this will be the way we madk ourselves known." Timber mused, thinking of how they could turn this into a positive experience, "I'm not sure how these packs here will deal with this event, but I think we may have an advantage in trying to find a new water source. No one knows we exist yet, we can search in secret and when we find something we could potentially use it as a bargaining chip." Of course she was thinking out loud, but in order to survive compromise has to be made. Though the Mercurior were secretive, they wouldn't be able to hide forever in this land, having any advantage they could would be crucial in continuing their existence.
I was made to rise above it.

Timber's words could not be more true. The fae was right. They were all in poor health. His deadened gaze trailed towards the small pool of water. Fins broke the surface, swimming circles in their watery grave. An exercise in futility. No matter what the fish tried, they were destined to end up fried without a single chance of salvation as long as things continued the way they were. Helios' ears flicked at the Lord's words. He had never wished to come here. That was one thing he had made starkly clear. It was far too late for regrets now though. They were here. One stray fish launched from the water landing with a splash at the Lord's paws. They had to break the cycle for a chance at hope. The fish was pushed back into the water. But that chance would not be obtained by them.
[break][break]
Xato's ebony gaze fell back on Timber. That the fae could find hope in such a hopeless situation was admirable. His experience with the local packs told him things may not turn out as well as the Lord hoped. The Sanzin and the Au'Dar were more likely to see the act as a threat more than anything. Blackmail to keep the packs in line as the Mercurior trapezed around their lands. He knew firsthand the cruelty of the Sanzin. The Vertok were kind though and were not likely to see it the same. "The local packs may not take kindly to such actions." He had to speak carefully here, to avoid his past being known. "They may see it as us withholding the water unless they comply with our demands."
[break][break]
He paused, thinking over his next words carefully, speaking slowly, with care, "It may be better if we get to know our would-be neighbors first, before taking any action that may incriminate us." The sun-kissed brute feared he had already said too much. It was possible he had said enough to clue in on some hint to his past. His past was a scar, a burn, on his pelt that hurt every time it was touched upon. He'd turned his back on it, ran from it, in the hopes that it would never catch up to him. Helios feared to face it, what had happened back then. He'd done everything he could to escape it. Leaving the lands. Discarding his old name of Helios. Burying the memories deep in the back of his mind. Yet it still came for him. But he wasn't Helios anymore. He was Xato. Xato had no such past here. Here, Xato was nothing more than a stranger. Still, his gaze straggled onto Timber's, wondering if she had caught on to anything.

Timber
Thoughts| "Spoken Word | Outside Speech | Cheshire
Timber considered his words, he had a point, but she couldn't walk away without trying to do something. To move on an abandon this land could mean a mess of missed opportunities, this drought couldn't last forever, this could be their one chance to make a place for their group without being thrown into a battle. Their numbers were low enough as it is and they weren't the typical group that would band together, she just wanted to find a home base they could use until it was time to move on again.
Her gaze swept over the world around them, she could see past the brittle grasses and dying trees, this place would be thriving under normal circumstances and she wanted to see that, carve out a place she could call home, even if it was going to be temporary. Though doing so without getting into an all out brawl would take tact.
"You have a point," she said with a small smile, "there's a reason you're my cause, Xato, you make me stop before rushing in." She said, a hint of bitterness to her words. There has been someone like that in her past, except he threw her away like trash. She didn't think Xato would do such a thing, he had proven himself but to truly trust another. Timber didn't have their feeling within her at all. Completely trusting another meant being vulnerable and she couldn't be like that. Not again.
"We might as well get to work then, who would be the best to approach first?" She asked, turning her gaze back to Xato. She had to believe in his words to guide them.
Oops! My bad! My brain doesn't like to work!

It seemed Timber had found nothing bizarre from his words. Xato breathed a quiet sigh of relief at the thought. He had no desire to be associated with this land and the vile wolves that inhabited it. Despite his attempts to quit his past, he still ended up clinging to it in small ways. Ever now and then he caught himself thinking of himself as Helios. He had crafted Xato to be apart from Helios and yet, he had not found himself as wholly one or the other. And now he wavered yet again, thinking of his time as Helios rather than forgetting it entirely. Much as he wished to forget it all, he could not. His experiences as Helios were needed now.
[break][break]
"From what I have heard during my canvases of this land," it was a lie. He had done little wandering once he had arrived. The flame-beholden brute had chosen to bed down in an area he knew few wolves, pack wolves especially, usually wandered. Xato had spent his time surreptitiously avoiding any and all pack wolves. His knowledge of the land originated from his time inhabiting it. "The pack residing in the mountains are most likely to be receptive of our presence." As he spoke, he turned his head towards those very mountains. "They are known as a warm and welcoming pack to any who arrive at their borders. Except..." He returned his ebony gaze to Timber, not entirely sure he should say any more. "I have heard they hold quarrel with the pack inhabiting the plains. At this, Xato fell silent. He had the sense he was saying too much. There was so much more he could say, warn against, about the Vertok and the Sanzin and the mysterious Au'Dar. But he held his tongue, wary of having his origin uncovered.
[break][break]
Wary, he flicked his tail and turned his body slightly away from the Lord, hiding his face. Frustrated, he stamped his front paw and flicked his ears again. The sun-kissed brute grappled with his desire not to say any more about his one-time home and his duty to protect his guild. He couldn't live with himself though if his selfish desires to keep silent caused his guildmates harm. With his face turned away from his Lord and his teeth clenched, he almost growled out, "It would be best to avoid the plains pack and the forest pack. The pack inhabiting the plains is cruel to both others and their own. The pack living in the forest does not take kindly to strangers." Xato's tail dropped. The vermillion Cause wished so badly to turn and run at this moment. Speaking of the land had brought his past into stark focus. He wanted to run and leave this land that he loathed so. But his responsibility to his guild and his lord kept him here, rooted in place as his old haunts crept up behind him.

Timber
Thoughts| "Spoken Word | Outside Speech | Cheshire
Timber remained silent, taking in every word that Xato spoke, crafting a way for them to interact with these packs and potentially carve out a home base here. She was tired of wandering, it had been a while since the group had found a place where they could spend time and hone their crafts and she hoped this place, despite the lack of water, would be able to provide that for them. Her body was getting tired and it needed a break, at least for a second and always being on the move had its draw backs, she felt that her group members weren't being given the opportunities to form contracts and gain resources. She didn't want the Mercurior to shrink because of her.
She listened to his words, about to speak when the man made of flame turned, stomping his paw. It caught her off guard for a moment, she rarely saw him act like this. Between the two of them she viewed him as she one with the most composure. For a moment it made her feel uneasy, it made her heart hurt for him- but she pushed it away as he spoke again.
"So our best bet is the mountain pack." She said with a nod, "we need to find the safest route to them so that we don't run into unnecessary conflict, but if I'm understanding correctly, with these packs quarrelling some of our guild mates may be able to form contracts and build on our guilds reputation. It may not sit well with my conscious, but our guild mates need opportunities to grow and truly live in the roles they've chosen." She said, voice quiet as she thought this over. Why must her life seem like a cycle of conflicts with her morality and what fit best for her guild mates?
The tawny woman looked at her Cause, raising a brow. "Xato...are you alright?" She ventured to ask. "You've been tense since we've stepped foot in this place."
I was made to rise above it.

[nospaces] [attr="class","ilikeyoumain"] [attr="class","ilikeyouhead"] [attr="class","ilikeyouheadimage"] [attr="class","ilikeyouheadtext"] Xato | Cause [attr="class","ilikeyouheadsubtext"]Never regret thy fall, O Icarus of the fearless flight [attr="class","ilikeyoutext"]
Timber was right. As immoral as it seemed, the guild thrived on conflict. A land rift with conflict and war was the perfect place for the guild members to gain work. Ironically, the pack Xato so despised provided the perfect land with which his guild could thrive in. As long as they could deal with them safely that is. Their guild members were likely to get run off or injured if they tried to contract with the Sanzin as is. They had to establish their place first to allow for relatively safe communications. Even though he knew this, the thought of working with the Sanzin in any capacity brought no end of revulsion. He could not abide a pack so twisted.
[break][break]
The sun-drenched brute's ears fell back as his Lord voiced her question. He was not one to talk of himself. Despite his many years in the guild, few of the members knew much of anything about him. Golden eyes turned away, his voice came out rough and oddly polite, "I'm fine. It's just the weather getting to me. I assure you." It was an obvious lie, one he made a poor attempt at hiding. Despite the concern backing his Lord's words, he had closed himself off. His words asked for no more questions. This was a topic he wanted nothing to do with. It touched on what he hid and what he hated about himself. Despite how long he had known Timber, he still wished to speak nothing about himself.
[break][break]
Barely leaving the smallest pause, the fiery Cause moved on, "We should make contact with the leaders of the mountain pack as soon as possible to avoid any misunderstandings about the presence of our guild in these lands." It was too obvious he wanted to change the topic. He wanted Timber to do the same, to go along with his ill behavior and desperation. The more he lingered on his past, the more it hurt. He couldn't afford to make contact with any Sanzin members, but Vertok was fine. No one knew him there. He could be Xato through and through. Or so he hoped.

Timber
Thoughts| "Spoken Word | Outside Speech | Cheshire "Hm," was all Timber managed to contribute to the conversation because her Cause so abruptly moved on. His obvious push to move on the conversation only heightened her concern and though she wanted to help him, be his support, she could tell that wouldn't happen. At least not today. Xato had always been this way, part of her thanked him for it, enjoying the silence and guidance that he gave while at the same time it ate at her that they really had no bond. She thought of her home, how readily everyone relied on each other to share ideas and manage conflict. Things weren't perfect, she wasn't that naïve, but her old pack had had a way of working together that she had always wanted to recapture, but it was fleeting. Just out of reach and of course...she didn't want the same thing to happen to this group that had happened to her own pack. If she had listened to her brain instead of her heart then perhaps they would still be alive. Her throat constricted as the faces flashed before her eyes. It only lasted a moment before the pushed them all away. It wasn't a time for mourning.
"Whatever you wish to say Xato," She said before turning her back to the drying lake, tiring of the view of helplessness and trudged away, though gave him enough time to catch up, "we go to this mountain pack and we talk to those leaders about our purpose here." She nodded as she spoke. "We hope for the best, if we have to leave who knows how close the next hospitable will be." She felt her jaw tighten. Their numbers were already low, she didn't want to see more wolves leave them. She refused to let this guild fade away. "And if we're lucky maybe they'll have leads on some fresh water."
I was made to rise above it.

Unknowingly, he had been holding his breath in the hopes that Timber wouldn't address his distress any further. When he heard her express agreement with his suggestion, that breath was released as he relaxed. Xato didn't know if she had done so out of respect for his wishes or simply because he had not allowed the topic to linger, but he mentally expressed his thanks nonetheless. Saying it in his mind meant nothing though as Timber couldn't hear it. Perhaps, one day, he'd be able to say it outload.

As his Lord walked off, Xato followed after at a distance. His eyes trailed after the tried back of his Lord. Even as the Cause, he could only do so much to support her. To hold the weight of a pack on one's back was a heavy burden. To do it well was even harder. They could at least give thanks that their guild was peaceful. But that peace was weighted against the difficult nature of their guild. They could not protect their members as easily as if it were a normal pack. The guild allowed one to live without the suffocating rule of the pack, but it also meant one had to live without the pack's assistance as well. How to protect the Guild's members without infringing on their rights. It was a difficult issue for their Lord to handle.

The sun-drenched brute nodded, relieved to know Timber was in agreement. "I suspect they will be willing to hear us out and help us as well. If they allow us safe harbor, we may be allowed to rally any guild members seeking refuge in their territory for a short while." They all needed a break from the weather and the constant danger that loomed over a guild with no stable land. If they could not secure a right to inhabit theses lands, they would have to leave. With the damage the drought had done to their members, the Cause was unsure they would all make it.

Timber
Thoughts| "Spoken Word | Outside Speech | Cheshire
"Refuge, what a beautiful idea," She mused, didn't that mean feeling safe? When was the last time she had felt fully safe in all aspects of her life? The answer couldn't come to her no matter how much she searched and it gnawed at her, but like everything else she pushed it away to focus on the task ahead of them. She couldn't think of herself, she had to think of the guild.
"Let's be quick then, the sooner we get to this mountain pack the sooner we can help our guild mates." She said, voice taking on a firmness. This had to work, they had no other choice, if they said no well, she wasn't sure what she would do, but she was sure that her Cause would be there to come up with a plan and she found comfort in that, though she reminded herself yet again that she could only truly rely on herself.
"Thank you Xato." She called over her shoulder before turning her gaze head towards the mountains, setting her shoulders and walking ahead, towards something that would greatly impact her guild and hopefully for the better.
I was made to rise above it.
