NANOUK Female Loner - Early Winter -
A cold shiver slithered along her spine, the line of fur along the top of her back lifting. It hadn’t yet snowed in the valley, from what she knew, but that didn’t mean that the temperature had not fallen drastically. Though the season of winter currently hid its most known feature, it still presented itself by frosting over the land and those within it.
Admittedly, Nanouk didn’t have much experience with snow or with winter. The last time she had lived through either was when she was very young, within the first few months of her life, which she didn’t remember very well. She did know that prey became far harder to find, much less catch, when winter arrived. Everything was beginning to hide away, taking shelter from the cold in the safety of burrows and dens far too small for a wolf to get into. Practically the only options during this time were the large sources of prey that couldn’t hide, but, as a small wolf, the likelihood of her taking down a large piece of prey was slim to none.
Luckily for her, the main opportunity for food to fill her stomach was right before her, resting as far as she could tell: another wolf. She had been following this other wolf for a little while now, probably a month or less. She didn’t know much about this other wolf, other than it was a she-wolf who spent most of her time alone. There were occasions where she would run into other wolves, but she did not treat them with aggression or caution, which Nanouk found quite odd. How could she trust any random wolf that walked up to her? Did she not realize that practically any wolf could act friendly but slice at you if you displeased them? And the amount of times these random wolves had been males was even more concerning. The only conclusion the small she-wolf could come to was that this bigger she-wolf had friends, or was just known for being strong.
Orange eyes stared towards the brown and white canine in the distance, body in a relatively relaxed but also alert position. From what she had seen and known of the she-wolf that she followed, she rested just as any other wolf did. When the wolf she followed would rest, she would too. But, unlike the larger female she trailed, Nanouk didn’t often allow herself to sleep. It wasn’t that she couldn’t or didn’t need to; she was exhausted quite often. But that voice within her head that told her to stay alert at all times made truly relaxing difficult at any point, which in turn made sleeping hard.
This was one of those times of exhaustion. Every once in a while, the black and red-brown-tinted she-wolf hidden in the tree-sheltered brush found her eyes slowly closing, but quickly opening upon realization. At first it only happened once or twice, but it grew more frequent rather quickly.
If I don’t start moving around this will just get worse. But she isn’t moving, and I can’t lose her or get myself caught. I don’t want to sleep…..and I can’t. I have...to stay….awake….so that she doe...doesn’t….leave…
As her thoughts spoke in her head, her body slowly began to lower to the ground without realizing. By the time the voice faded, her eyes were closed and her consciousness was gone. Her torso just barely leaned sideways and her muzzle pushed lightly under one of her paws, her breath steady against her other paw.
She didn’t know how long she had slept, but when her body finally began to wake up again, the sound of shuffling leaves caused her eyes to flash open. Her head lifted and snapped to the side, seeing movement right outside of where she had hidden. Both her mind and her body grew frantic, jumping up from her laying position and backing away as quickly as possible. But she didn’t get far, her back end hitting a tree behind her. Orange pools scanned side to side as fast as possible, looking for any chance of escape, but it was too late. Her gaze snapped back ahead, ears flattening against her head and body lowering towards the ground beneath her.

Timber
Thoughts| "Spoken Word | Outside Speech | Abyss It wasn't until Winter hit that Timber didn't realize just how alone she was. In the months of Spring, Summer, and even Autumn live teemed through the lands, active as they got ready for winter or just enjoying the warmer weather, but now with the cold months ahead the world was silent with the exception of her paws hitting the ground. It was easy for Timber to get lost in her mind, evil memories and the good would crawl across her brain though she was starting to grow numb as time passed and to be honest, it was scaring her. How could see look at these memories and not feel a thing? Not even rage? She inhaled sharply, the cold scratching at her lungs, waking her senses the familiar burn of anger grew in her belly. There it was. How could she be so foolish to think she could forget such feelings. These emotions and memories swirled before her endlessly they were almost the perfect distraction from the tiny wolf following her.
Over the course of days she had been walking and interacting with other wolves that pointed her in different directions of where the best hunting areas were she had been made aware of the fact that there was a female following in her steps. She had thanked the fellow travelers and moved on, careful not to cast too many glances over her shoulder so her shadow wouldn't get spooked. So far there had been sign of a threat, the little black wolf had kept her distance, only her thin frame giving away her gender, and so Timber chose not to confront her.
As the days passed she began to grow comfortable with her accomplice. She hadn't tried to confront her, though she wondered why she would follow her out of any one. No matter the answer Timber continued on her trek. Her stomach had grown accustom to the long days without food though now her thoughts were full of all the possible things she could eat, she wondered if the young wolf behind her was hungry, she had to be. Over time she hadn't been keeping the same pace so Timber had adjusted, feigning tiredness when really she wanted to give the small one some rest until one day she rested for the night and in the morning she started walking but when she stopped and took a casual look back there was no one behind her and concern filled her heart. Did something happen to the other girl and she wasn't able to hear her and help her? Guilt gnawed at her until she decided to turn around and look for her, sticking her nose to the ground until she finally caught a strong scent, leading her to thick brush and she stuck her head in, laying eyes on the black and red furred female, her heart growing soft. She was just so...small. It made her think of a pup for a moment though she knew this was no pup of course.
Within seconds the female was up, eyes wide as the searched the area and her body crouched as if she was about to be attacked.
Timber pulled her head back, keeping her eyes on the little shadow. "It's okay," she said with a soft voice, "I won't hurt you. I didn't see you following me so I wanted to make sure you were alive."
I was made to rise above it.

NANOUK Female Loner The face that came into sight was one that was both familiar and unfamiliar. The small femme had been following the other she-wolf for a relatively decent amount of time, but all of that trailing had been done from a distance. What she knew of the larger female was what she could decipher from afar, such as her fur colors, the general patterns of her pelt, an estimate of her size, and a rather untrustworthy interpretation of her facial features. She had never gotten close enough to take in the more intricate details of the other’s appearance, like her eye color or the exact manner that her markings accented her color, or even her overall face shape.
So while the color of this face was familiar, the face itself was not. Perhaps she could assume that this was indeed the target of her sights in recent times, but she couldn’t go just based on assumption. She didn’t know for sure that this was the larger female she had been following, so it would be best to assume it wasn’t until she found out otherwise. For her own safety.
A gradual shake began in her back legs, pushing against the ground at her paws in any attempt to move further away, but to no avail. Would the other wolf snap? Would they leap forward? Would they let out a howl to call their friends and all join together in going after her? Oh the memories that would come flowing back…
The other’s jaws began to open, the shaking that started in her back legs spreading quickly to the rest of her. A flash of a memory glazed over her eyes, the white and tan-colored muzzle in front of her turning black and stained with blood. The black pupils at the center of her orange eyes shrunk to mere dots, fear bursting from her chest and spreading like wildfire.
No! I don’t want to be bitten again! Please!
“It’s okay.”
Red-flecked ears lowered further, the combination of terror and hesitation making her whole body tense.
"I won't hurt you. I didn't see you following me so I wanted to make sure you were alive."
The utter lack of trust in that first statement was enough to make the small black she-wolf push herself further back against the tree, the bark poking at her spine. But it wasn’t this pricking that her mind was focused on.
This was, in fact, the she-wolf she had been following. Not only that, apparently the larger femme knew that Nanouk had been following her.
But how!? I thought I kept myself hidden…
Her small jaws opened slightly, though nothing came out. Multiple times within a few seconds her mouth would open only a tad, seemingly in an attempt to speak, but the hesitation was painfully clear. When her voice finally did make its way out of her, it was not coherent words, but rather a stuttering of sounds that may have formed words if she continued, but did not.
“I-...you-...no-...wait-...how-....sorry!” It wasn’t entirely clear what her sudden burst of apology was for, or what she was trying to say. Though she wouldn’t voice this or recognize it, the only portion of what the larger she-wolf said that was truly heard was ‘see you following me’. The ‘I didn’t’ and the ‘wanted to make sure you were alive’ were lost on fearful ears.
It wasn’t until moments of stuttering and small jumps of movement later that her ears only slightly lifted from the side of her head, a small glimmer of confusion flashing over her gaze. Though they were still clearly terrified, orange orbs narrowed just slightly, brows furrowing.
“But….why…”

Timber
Thoughts| "Spoken Word | Outside Speech | Abyss Watching the she wolf quake and quiver like an abused new born filled Timber with multitudes of emotions. On one hand she wanted to cry for the child and whatever trauma she had gone through, on the other hand she wanted to find the bastard who had inflicted these mental wounds and rip their throats out. Her self control steadied the wall containing her carnal rage. She watched the little shadow back into a tree, the sharp bark forcing her coppery black fur to stick out like the quills of the porcupine, no doubt digging in her flesh.
Her eyes were like pools of fire that erupted between trees from the rage of electricity that came down from the sky during storms that seemed to be conjured from the rage of gods but set in her face they were alight with fear not power. She remained silent, although did take a step back into the brush, the leaves pushing her fur uncomfortably against the grain it naturally laid.
It was unpleasant-like needles being shoved into her skin, but she was willing to feel this way in order to let another be comfortable and from the way this little on reacted it had been a long time since she had felt any form of comfort and safety-a realization that turned her fiery rage into a cold sadness. From the tiny females reaction the elder became aware of how she stood, taking action to make herself seem less threatening-something that went against every fiber of being. Her normally straight forward ears fell back, relaxed, her tail fell down, brushing the fallen pine needles on the hard packed earth and she lowered herself, her belly inches from the ground. Her muscles strained in protest but Timber wanted to convey to the little one she wasn't like the wolves who had taken advantage of her.
Timber watched as the little ones mouth opened and snapped shut, the words struggle to come and finally they did, though they struggled to make sense. A smile smile crossed the grey ones face, wrinkling her red covered scars. "My dear, you don't make it through life as long as I have without learning to watch your back-without making it obvious." She explained with a gentle voice. "Besides, those other wolves I have encountered tried to warn me of the little shadow tailing me." Her gaze turned knowing, though now judgement resided within them. "But I don't understand why you would want to follow me."
I was made to rise above it.
