[googlefont=Cinzel][googlefont=Cinzel Decorative] ARTEMIS Female Suit of the Sanzin The thin yet fluffy tail that resided behind her flicked once more, her smile only growing, though not by much. Many things in life were unpredictable, such as the weather, or the direction of the swirling wind. Or even the migration of deer and elk. Sure, their patterns of movement could be examined and memorized, but one never knew when they would find another trail more convenient than their previous one. Or when the hunting of loners or the other packs interfered and caused them to switch their routes.
But, on the scale of unpredictability, pups were not one of those things that were unknown. Not many of them, at least. She was quite certain that there were some pups out there who had already experienced hardship and loss and danger. Pups that knew the world was dangerous and were smart enough to be quiet when out and about, especially by themselves. Though, she had never personally met any of those pups before. And the pup before her most certainly was not one of them.
He fell right into her trap without hesitation. He revealed what sort of wolf he was, and what type of comments and appeals caught his attention. There was a spark in those little round eyes as she mentioned that he was brave, and he even solidified his own pride by claiming he was called tough and strong by his elders. Even more than that, he stated that he was always winning his little mini battles against the likes of his equals, but only because they were his age.
That statement only wove yet another string in the web within her mind that prepared to catch the pup, locking his mentality and his trust in herself. His attentions were so focused on what he knew and what he wished to pay attention to that he didn’t even realize that there was a white snake beginning to wrap itself around his paws. A hypothetical one, but one nonetheless.
“I see.” Her words were spoken with an air of both understanding and pity. “Unfortunately most adult wolves believe that pups are only capable of fighting those their own size and age.”
Her golden eyes turned away momentarily, as though she were lost in thought for a moment. But her smile picked up again, eyes glancing sideways at the pup. “That’s something not practiced within my own pack. You can spar with any wolf you wish, regardless of if they are older or younger than you.”
It was time to plant the seed, the idea, the imagery. The glorified reality of the group in which she led. The Vertok were not the violent sort, from all that she had learned of them. They were the typical cherishers of pups; let them live an easy and careless life before slowly introducing them to the world around them as they grew in age. The Sanzin threw their pups straight into the fray. Learn to defend yourself and grow in size, rank, age, and skill, or allow yourself to remain soft, which would result in either abandonment or your own death.
If this pup knew how truly cruel and heartless her pack was, he would likely never take an interest. There was a chance she would be wrong about that, but why risk it? It was better to mold the pup’s idea of her pack into his ideal world, where there were no secrets and pups were not treated as useless and pitiful scraps of fur. Pups were small warriors that would one day grow to be strong and respected. No, they were not warriors yet, but they would be treated as such, for they were the future of the pack. Surely that was the pup’s dream?
Regardless, placing this seed of information would come in handy in the future. And, with any luck, she would get to watch as that small seed grew into a tree. A tree whose roots, in some way or another, would connect to herself. And when that tree finally grew, it would be hers. Though, it would take a bit of water and encouragement to grow this tree. This was not her typical method of shaping a pup, but this pup was different. He was not of the Sanzin. This tree would take a bit more convincing to sprout.
“As long as you are strong and devoted to becoming better, you are seen as a true warrior in no time. As long as you stand back up, even if you fail, you will gain respect.” Her gaze fully turned to peer down at this young pup, lightly tilting her head innocently. “I would assume your pack does not feel the same?”

Zero
Thoughts| "Spoken Word | Outside Speech | Abyss As she spoke, Zero hung onto every word like a child mesmerized by shining lights. It was like she was speaking of a magical place where he would be given the chance to show what he was really made of. He wouldn't be treated like a baby, but what about his sisters? He couldn't just leave them. A small frown crossed his face, but could he let them hold him back from what he wanted? He watched her turn away from him and the instance her gaze wasn't on him he felt cold, alone, his heart ached for her attention as if she were his own mother turning her nose away from him.
Ara flashed across his mind.
She never made he or his sister call her mom, though it hadn't taken long for his sisters to use that term of endearment. Just hearing them call someone not of their blood Mom made him feel...odd. He didn't like it. He didn't see the point. Ara cared for them yes, but she also sheltered them. She didn't understand Zero's need to explore and fight. He wanted to build his strength and yet no one would let him. What was there to protect him from? He didn't see himself as a tiny pup. He was a warrior in training that they refused to acknowledge and it was growing more frustrating day by day to his little psyche.
"I should be able to fight whoever I want." He muttered to himself, besides wouldn't it be only him dealing with the consequences if he ended up getting injured?
The moment her eyes turned back to him he felt like the sun was warming his back, making him bristle. His eyes grew wide as she explained her pack and how they ran their fights. "Spar...with any wolf?" He repeated in wonder, small brown eyes growing wide as his mind conjured the possibilities. He could become a hero even faster! He thought of a pack with wolves at a constant battle with each other, growing stronger day by day with no limits to their potential, no one worrying over them or smothering them or keeping them from the fray just because they were 'too young'. It sounded like a place of eden.
"No, my pack won't let me do anything like that until I'm older." He said with a huff. It was so boring in that pack grounds. Nothing ever happened. The only exciting thing was when hunters brought back prey but other than that he was confined to stay close to the den unless he managed to run off, like today, and look at all that he had learned so far from such an adventure. "It's boring, waste of time." He said, shaking his head. "I get scolded if I fight too rough with my sisters and it's annoying. It isn't my fault they're such weenies!"
I can see there's so much to learn It's all so close and yet so far

[googlefont=Cinzel][googlefont=Cinzel Decorative] ARTEMIS Female Suit of the Sanzin That’s right, little owl…
The wondrous and entranced expression in those wide little eyes, the slight prick of his fur when she turned to him, the tone in his voice. Her words were becoming the shiniest of gold in his desperate little mind. She could practically see the swirl of bright and wishful light beginning to bloom in that small skull. Her plan was working. And it only drove the fierce and wicked red flame within her chest to flourish.
“Any wolf~, ” she repeated once more back to him, a smile crossing her features with only the smallest of sly curves pulling at the corners. “From the smallest hunter to the largest guard.” Her jaw remained slightly open for a split second, originally intending to include another snippet into the facade, but it closed quickly as to cover said hesitation. No. He could not spar with me. He could try, if he truly wanted. But his goal is to become strong, not to die. That would be a rather troublesome inconvenience for us both…
His following statements, in truth, were quite sad in her eyes. Pitiful, even. It was disappointing to think that most places treated their young as helpless and fragile. How were they to learn when they were kept in place, glued to their dens like a fly in a web? Just as such a thought suggested, when they eventually were allowed to roam, they would merely be prey to a hungry spider rather than being the spider themselves, as they should be. The Vertok saw their pups as lambs, but were raising flies instead. Interesting. It explained why the pup who stood before the Alphess was so naive. At least, in this scenario, the spider was willing to compromise.
“How else will you grow stronger if you are forbade from growing?” Vibrant golden eyes shifted only slightly, looking passed the young brute to the mountains beyond. Her orbs narrowed, the tip of her tail switching. Though these revelations irritated her, she would do nothing to stop the ways of that pack. Their own foolishness would one day be their downfall. And said downfall was already taking place right under their noses.
“You and your sisters...you are seen as sheep. Little lambs in a world full of wolves. Perhaps you all will grow, perhaps not, given your...pack placement. In the eyes of your pack, your siblings will stay lambs. As will you. Unless…-” Her gaze fell back on him, her voice ending but in a way that displayed that it would continue momentarily. Very slowly her body began to shift, large paws lifting and moving forward. She made a very slow descent down the small hill she stood upon, openly examining him as she did. She turned just slightly, moving to one side of him. With full purpose and intention, she moved herself with grace and very precise angles, allowing her muscle to push through her pelt. Show him what he could become. Show him what one day he could look like. If…
“-you wish to become a real wolf.” Just as she finished the ending of her statement, she turned to face the same direction as him, standing alongside the pup. She leaned her head down far to match his eye-level, though still stood straight. Her head only slightly tilted, golden eyes looking directly into the younger male’s own brown, a smile pulling at her maw.
“What is your name, little owl?”

Zero
Thoughts| "Spoken Word | Outside Speech | Abyss
Zero stared at her, eyes big as moons as she spun her tale, though to him this was a tale of adventure with his name written all over it. Who knew that with such a small amount of time away from his pack could have such a big meaning to this little pup. No one talked to him like this at home, instead they used high pitched voices as if they were little babies and it made his blood boil with annoyance. He was young but he wasn't a baby! He had watched the other wolves training in his home-especially a she wolf that had her whole life focused on becoming the best Rook. She had told him she spent every day training from the moment they had told her she could and hearing that made Zero not want to wait! If that girl had waited so long to train and was so great, then imagine how great he could be if he could start training now! It didn't make sense to him why they would hold him back! He also couldn't understand why his sisters were okay with that, they napped or picked flowers-much to Ara's delight-and when he tried to spar with them they would start crying after only a few minutes and it drove him nuts!
"Any wolf..." He said, little voice filled with aw as an image took place in his mind. In a big field wolves of every size were jumping at each other and pinning each other down, growls and barks filling the air as everyone fought, gaining strength and learning to be warriors-to be wolves! His heart thrummed with promise, seeing these imaginary wolves chasing each other, hooting and holler, getting the best of each other. No one would be crying for him to stop when he would jump in and try out al the new moves he came up with. No one would tell him to stop or chastise him for being too rough. He would be able to flex his claws and use his teeth like there were meant to be used. He could become a true warrior and then he would be able to show all the Vertok how wrong they were to hold him back.
Zero watched as this female who exuded power descended from the hill and through her fur her muscles shown with every paw step. From far away Zero couldn't tell that she was strong but as she got closer she solidified this dream that he had formed in his mind. This woman wasn't a sheep, she was a predator. In his eyes she was everything that he aspired to be-though of course if he could get stronger he would-she wasn't a sheep. Of course, Zero had never seen a sheep in real life, but Ara had stories about them and from what he remembered, he didn't want to be one of those and Artemis comparing his sisters to sheep made him dislike the creature even more.
"I don't want to be no sheep!" He sneered, baring his needle like puppy teeth, "I want to be a real wolf, like you!" He announced, turning his head to look up at the domineering female, though to him she looked like the hero he had been wishing for and for a moment he found himself hoping that his Mom had been strong like her. "My name? Oh yeah, it's Zero." He said, pulling his paws closer in an attempt to stand taller. "What's yours?"

[googlefont=Cinzel][googlefont=Cinzel Decorative] ARTEMIS Female Suit of the Sanzin Those were the exact words she had wished to hear, ‘like you’. She hadn’t expected to hear them so soon, but he was young, what was she to expect? The boy had his dreams and fantasies, and based on his reaction and response to her words, she was an embodiment of said dreams. She took this as a compliment, a way of showing that her slight flaunting of self-image had worked.
A single gray and auburn-flecked ear flicked as he spoke his name, golden eyes blinking once. He was so quick to tell his name, which she supposed wasn't necessarily a bad thing. Just a tad careless, which was normal. She smiled innocently enough, but the gears within that twisted mind turned oh so loudly. The femme’s head lifted from its lowered state, her paws padding a few steps forward. Her fluffy tail brushed lightly against his shoulder as she spoke over her own.
“I don’t know~. Speaking your true name can prove to be dangerous when given to just anybody.” Her voice took on a slightly higher, almost teasing tone as those vibrant orbs glanced back at the young brute. A small smile crossed her face, that air of confidence in herself and her intentions still blazing in her chest. She knew what she was doing, and she knew that she did. In a way, she had called him out on his own mistake, though it was yet to be seen if he picked up on it. It was obvious enough, right? Even to a pup? Surely he was that smart.
“Hmmm…..” The gentle and considerate hum vibrated through closed jaws as she took a few slow steps forward, seeming lost in thought. For a minute, she paused, looking to the sky. It wasn’t really late, per say, but as much as she wished to stay longer and play her game, the rats back home couldn’t be left for too long unattended. When she turned again, her gaze narrowed.
“I have to be sure that I can trust you. And sheep are not trustworthy.” The large white canine tilted her head just slightly, the smallest of smirks pulling at her jaws.
“I will make you a deal, Zero. Since you don’t seem bothered by leaving the safety and confinement of your home today, I’m sure it wouldn’t bother you to do it again.” She glanced to the side towards the mountains, a flash of smugness creeping into her gaze. “I will return to this spot in exactly five days, at this same time. If you find yourself brave enough to come here again, only then will I tell you my name, and perhaps more about my pack. But...if you do decide that the warmth of your little lamb sisters is more appealing than adventure...then I suppose we may meet again when you are older.”
With this, Artemis began to turn, padding back up the hill from which she came. She did not take on a brisk pace, for she did want to hear if the pup behind her wished to add anything. Though she faced forward, one ear rotated back towards the little white wolf, waiting for any sign of if she had succeeded.

Zero
Thoughts| "Spoken Word | Outside Speech | Abyss
Zero stared at her, transfixed by each movement. There wasn't a wolf like her in his pack, it was disappointing to the little boy. She was what he believed a powerful wolf should be, every step held the strength that he wanted and even though he barely knew her, he was starting to admire her. When she chastised him for giving his name so readily, his ears lowered. He had to do better. He was better than this. He didn't let himself quiver though, instead he pulled himself back together, but by that time she was already laying out the guidelines to their next meeting.
Five days. That's all he had. He wasn't sure if he could wait that long, but if he had to then he would, it would just be a challenge to keep his excitement to himself. He watched as she walked away, rooted in spot. He was so excited at what the future held that he almost didn't speak but then he remembered. He had to say something.
"I'm no sheep!" He yelled after her, loud as his voice could muster, "I'll be here!" And she would tell him her name. he believed that. With that in mind the little fellow watched her go before turning around and racing back to his pack grounds, sure no one would notice his absence.
