The world it turns no matter what Why did he do this to himself? As if of their own accord his paws had brought him back to the borders of the Au'Dar territory, his old home whose smells still brought him comfort even though he didn't deserve a place there. His tail sunk behind him as his gaze wandered over the familiar land and the ache started in the bleak cavity where his heart sat.
He still remembered running through these woods like he owned them and now they leered at him, whispering to him that he was a traitor. Even the birds that followed him were quiet, hidden back in the branches.
Why did he come here? Was it to continue to punish himself? If he was caught it was sure to mean a fight and he was nowhere in the physical shape to battle like he used to or even run that far. It was embarrassing, how much he had let himself go, he was nothing like the warrior he used to be but he couldn't bring himself to think of ever being like that again because along with that toned body was an arrogant fool whose selfishness had made him lose everything.
Even with these thoughts twisting through him like vines with thorns digging into him he continued to walk feet from the border, his eyes filling with longing of the sense of family and belonging he used to have, a sense he never believed he could capture again.

Leo trotted along in what could be considered a merry manner if not for the brute's icy manners. There was no joy in his gaze nor lightness in his footsteps. His destination was a certain outer reach of the territory. It was a place he visited often despite how much he despised the area. The silver-grey brute was going to visit the place his father had died and the last place his mother had been seen. At least, he was. Now, his nose picked up a new scent, one that drew a harsh sneer to his face. Alesso. Picking up his pace, he steered himself towards the scent. The snake coiled around his neck started to move in response as he too picked up the scent.
[break][break]
Slowing down as he neared, he pushed through the bush to come across the pack traitor. His lips curled in disdain, "What do we have here?" He took a few more steps toward the abhorred brute. Iro reared his head out from the furs of Leo's neck. The adder's tongue flicked in and out as the snake studied the interloper before dropping from Leo' neck. As always, the snake betrayed nothing. "A dista amidst our grand forest," Leo growled. The two wolves were about the same age. Leocadio knew of the foolish warrior who had let his tafa die and fled the pack like a miserly fool. As a Shepherd, it was unacceptable. As himself, he loathed the very existence of one who would commit such a sin.
[break][break]
"What are you doing here, vastiva?," he snapped, throwing out the Au'Dar worst insult, "You have no place here." The smaller brute was showing teeth now. Iro slithered between his paws as Leo circled Alesso. The fact that the brute had run away instead of facing his crimes made him no better than a coward in Leo's eyes. Alesso's actions seemed the very definition of the word. That he came slinking back only seemed to make it worse.

The world it turns no matter what He should have known better, dear gods he should have known better than to come here let alone longer. The thorns inside him turned into piercing icecicles when he heard someone approach and of course out of anyone it had to be him. Milo knew if anyone from the Au'Dar had seen him it wouldn't go well but with that wolf being Leo he knew he was done for. Anyone else he might be able to weasel his way out but this left him between a rock and a hard place in such a strong proverbial fashion that it became physical, his paws acting like they were fused with the earth below him as he stared at Leocadio approaching. The fur along his neck made told him to run, his brain was screaming at him but he couldn't bring himself to turn tail and run.
The other brutes voice snapped him into focus but it couldn't bring anything but his eyes to move, they darted from Leocadio's face to his neck, searching for his Tafa, trying not to panic when he spotted the snake drop to the ground and he braced himself for a sneak attack of a bite to end him. He was almost hoping for it to happen but something told him his suffering wouldn't come to an ending any time soon...unless he did it himself.
Leocadio wasn't know for kindness or anything like it, he knew that from years of being in the same pack but being called a Dista still felt like a stab to the heart. He knew it was true but hearing it from another brought more pain. He didn't say anything as Leo spoke but his massive frame seem to sink into itself.
Even though he expected to be mistreated he hadn't been anticipating such an insult, the word seeming to float in the air between them and reminding him that he truly was nothing. His head bowed though his eyes remained on Leocadio as the Shepherd started to circle him. How tides had turned, he thought ruefully, back when he was a warrior, in his prime, rarely anyone confronted him like this but now? None of that mattered. He was nothing. "Apparently my paws thought this was still home," he finally spoke, forcing his head to rise but unlike in in his younger years there was no pride behind the action, just a heavy curtain of shame, "it was a mistake, I was about to leave Leocadio." He ventured into using the other mans name but what did he expect from the action? Maybe he was hoping his life would be ended if he made the other angry enough.

[nospaces] [attr="class","letgo"] [attr="class","text"] [attr="class","scroll"] The shepherd's gaze held only disdain as he circled the larger brute. Seeing his former packmate hang his head, Leo would have laughed if he'd had a sense of humor. "Why bow your head? What of your great pride, Alesso?" he taunted with a cackling laugh. How the mighty had fallen. The once boastful warrior was no more than shade of himself now. Leo may have had a policy of unbiased hatred towards all, but for dista especially, those great disgraces, he loathed with every fiber of his being. Alesso was no exemption. [break][break] Leo scoffed, "Home? You have none. Anywhere." The Au'Dar would never welcome him back after committing their greatest crime. "I always knew you were a fool, but I didn't think you lacked sense as well as brains." Alesso, and by extension, distas, were allowed to remain in the pack despite losing their treasured tafas. A fact Leo abhorred. If he had it his way, distas would be exiled or even killed. Such stains should not even be allowed to remain on this sacred land after committing such sacrilege. Despite all his faults, Alesso at least had enough awareness to leave the pack. It was perhaps his only positive. [break][break] A vile smile stretched across Leo's jaws. "So soon?" he crooned. His humorless gaze flickered darkly. Like he'd allow the traitor to get away so easily. Iro's shadow snaked between Leo's legs. The snake's indiscernible gaze perpetually fixed on the opposing brute. "Stay a while," Leo growled without any warmth, "Let's catch up."

The world it turns no matter what Milo couldn't stop himself from flinching at the way Leocadio called him out for his past prideful demeanor. In his youth he had strutted around the pack ground as if he had owned it with his head held high and looking down upon nearly everyone. He wasn't an innocent boy then, he had been a bully, harassing those he thought were weaker and laughing at them for any fumbles. He hadn't been forgiving nor had karma. He couldn't bring himself to speak but his head did lift as his eyes stared on the circling shepherd who was just reveling in being able to rip him apart while all he could do was just stare.
His jaw clenched when he was reminded that he didn't have a home. He knew that but he couldn't stop the longing that had brought him here to a realm of familiar scents and memories. Now a new memory was taking shape, causing waves of angry fire to lick up the back of his neck. "Where I lack brains you don't seem to lack in a running mouth." These words left him before he could think twice, carrying with it the distaste that was growing for Leocadio, building from years of experience.
He was about to step back, wanting to make for an exit before things got too harry when he realized there was a snake between his feet, making him freeze and curse himself for losing his attention on the sneaky creature. "Catch up?" Milo repeated, his gaze jumping from the tafa to the wolf it was partnered with. "I didn't know you missed me so much Leo."

[nospaces] [attr="class","letgo"] [attr="class","text"] [attr="class","scroll"] Leocadio was stunned to silence after Alesso, at last, retorted to his many jabs. Even so, it wasn't long before a vicious smile cracked his jaws followed by a cackling laugh, "I had thought you had learned with how demure you've been. But the foolish warrior still remains." He danced around Alesso, feigning innocence with a crooked smile and ears laid back, "Go on then. Show us that warrior pride. The one that killed your tafa." By all common sense, the silver shepherd should have backed down. His taunts had landed. He was lucky if things didn't escalate into a full-out fight. But Leo didn't care for common sense or the feelings of others. [break][break] He laughed, "How could I not?" The grasses rustled as Iro slithered back to Leo. The snake followed along with his partner for a few steps before disappearing back into the foliage. "There's no one more unique than you," he crooned, as he approached the opposing brute, "The only wolf to kill his own tafa. The great disappointment." He found all of this greatly amusing, much to the displeasure of the target of his ire. As far as Leo was concerned, he thought Alesso had gotten off too lightly with his punishment. A mere demotion didn't seem nearly enough for the crime committed. He'd make Alesso pay for failing his tafa. [break][break] His sickly smile turned into a frown as he snapped, "You don't have the right to call me Leo." They weren't so familiar to address each other by their nicknames. Only his family had the right to call him that. Even if most of them got on his nerves. Backing off, Iro slithered through Leo's legs towards Alesso. A reminder of his presence even if unseen. "Speaking of names," Leo continued, "I hear you have quite the interesting one." A laugh danced in his eyes. "What was it again?" he taunted, "Mimo? Mimsy? Marigold?"

The world it turns no matter what For a moment Milo thought he'd finally gotten the other to shut up, it could be his chance to escape but of course the thorn in his side continued on with his taunting. Each word making him clench his jaw just a bit tighter, not stopping even as it started to ache. His body stiffened when Leocadio called him out for killing his Tafa and that dark fire inside of his chest lost its power, cowering down into low embers. "I...did not...kill Valerie." He stated, voice hallow. He had tried to tell himself this every day but deep down he still believed it was his fault. He had tried to save his mothers life, his little puff ball of a Tafa having been forgotten in that spot on his back when he had leapt into action, so focused on saving is mother that everything else had faded away until it really it hit him that it was too late and those he had loved were gone from this world forever.
Milo stared at Leocadio as he approached, wanting to scream out that he didn't kill his Tafa but kept silent, it was no use to yell at deaf ears that was reveling in his fall. "Yes, the great disappointment meeting another here," he said slowly, "because how could someone who broke their family come at me like this? Acting like you're perfection when no one in this pack can stand your minor existence. Walking around like you own the place when everyone would rather see you soaked in blood." He said with a sneer, the embers inside slowly started to per a bit higher with every jab that Leocadio threw at him. Milo had wanted to change, in some ways he believed he had, but it seemed that at least now he was reverting back to his old condescending ways, "my name is Milo, but make sure to keep those names on hand if any poor fool chooses to reproduce with the likes of you."

[nospaces] [attr="class","letgo"] [attr="class","text"] [attr="class","scroll"] Leo laughed, harsh and cackling, "Keep telling yourself that." The shepherd brushed past the former Au'Dar, his eyes trailing over the brute's back. "It was your neglect that caused Valerie's untimely death." For the first time in their icy interaction, Leo's voice fell soft and sweet as his eyes looked upon a world past, "A shame. It was such a sweet creature." He may have been called the black-hearted, but his heart burned true for all tafa, regardless of their partner. For the late Valerie, he expressed true kindness and regret for its passing. [break][break] Again, Leo was shocked to silence. The gentle giant showed his teeth once more, but this time, the jabs hit far closer to home. A malice overtook his features as his lips peeled back in a growl and his hackles rose. His hatred rang true, enough to make his anger seem like a gentle rain. Leo didn't care how the pack perceived him. They were of no concern to him. But to call out his family was another matter altogether. "At least I atone for my crimes, unlike you. I may be a disappointment, but I am no coward," he snarled, "What do I care for the words of peons? If they wish me soaked in blood, may it be their own." Loyalty to the pack? He had none. The only ones he swore to were the tafa and his family. He was confident he could survive, even if it all came to ruin. [break][break] All pretense of kindness was gone now. Now that Milo chose to return Leo's punches, the white brute would pretend no longer. "A perfectly fine name for a halfwit," he sneered, lips curled back in distaste, "Though Marigold fits a cretin like you better." The grass rustled as Iro slithered back to his partner's side, curling around his front paw. The shepherd's lips pulled back in a smirk, "I'll keep them in mind. I may be hated, but I imagine I have a better chance than you. No one wants to be with a murderer."

Pure rage continued to build up inside of Milo, his gaze locked onto Leo as his jaw continued to clench. He had spent so much time building the walls around himself to understand and attempt to forgive himself for what had happened. He had tried to protect his mother and had lost everything all at once. He wanted to turn around and walk away when Leocadio commented on Valerie. "You. Have. No. Right. To. Talk. About. Her." He said each word deliberately through clenched teeth, "her memory does not need to be tainted by the likes of you. A pathetic excuse for a living thing who shouldn't even be allowed near the Tafa to spread your poison." He snapped, his lips pulling back into his own growl as he stared down at Leo, "atone? When have you atoned? There is nothing you can do to make your existence matter!" He continued to rip in, the fur along his back and neck started to rise. "Apparently you care enough if you continue to speak with me!" His voice ripped into a snarl as he started to lose control and Leocadio's continued words continues to jab into him. "ME? THE CRETIN? SPEAK FOR YOURSELF, YOU ARE THE VAS-"
"ENOUGH!" A woman's voice echoed from the woods and even though he hadn't heard that voice in ages it pieced Milo right through the heart, making him freeze, gaze flickering as there was a crash through the brush, a familiar badgers breaking through, his sharp teeth bared and behind him a white pelted woman appeared with once friendly eyes narrowed into slits. "S-Silver, you must understand, Leocadio sta-" Milo stammered. "I said enough!" Her voice made the larger brute flinch. He wasn't accustomed to seeing this side of the woman known for kindness amongst the pack. Even to him and his selfish ways she had been kind, even after the incident but now...he felt like her look could kill him. Silver came to a stop between the men with Wynd snarling from below her, looking between the men with his own rage in his eyes. "You know you aren't to be here, you're being foolish," she looked at Milo with her teeth bared, making Milo take a step back, "you are not one of us. You are exiled. You know coming here would not bring you any joy. Leave."
"But Silver, I was just-"
"I SAID LEAVE. NOW." Silver's voice rose higher, taking on an tone of demanding. There was no questioning that if he didn't leave now blood would be spilled. Silver stayed between them, rage boiling her blood at the same time as regret from seeing the hurt in Milo's eyes, but he knew better and it was better that she put an end to his rather than her brothers or other warriors. "Fine, but only because you ask." Milo said, shooting a glare at Leocadio but the second Silver noticed this she stepped directly in front of Leocadio, a growl rumbling deep in her throat and finally Milo's ears turned back and he turned around, running into the woods, crashing through like Silver had just done. She waited until he was out of side before stepping away from Leocadio, turning her attention to him, eyebrow raised to see if he would say anything. TAGS: Cheshire NOTES: Hope this makes sense |

[nospaces] [attr="class","letgo"] [attr="class","text"] [attr="class","scroll"] An amused glint danced in Leo's umbral eyes, "I have every right. I am a shepherd, protector of the tafa." Leo reveled in the steaming anger he'd caused in Milo. What right did this exiled dista have to claim any façade of calm? He had to be punished for all he had done. Alesso's foolishness had cost the lives of not one tafa, but two and his mother's as well. "And yet I remain at their side," he taunted. The off-white brute was not the one in exile, self-imposed or not. For all his supposed crimes, Leo still remained in the Au'Dar. The pack still welcomed him. He could still call this forest. [break][break] Anger flared and tempers rose higher than that of their sun-scorched lands. Leo snapped, chestnut gaze dark with detestable hatred, "What have you done then? Fled with your tail between your legs?" He could feel Iro tighten around his leg. The snake was warning him not to go too far, but Leo refused to listen to his tafa. "Oh, Mi-lo," he sang, sickly sweet, "You mistake my intentions. If I cared about you, you wouldn't be here. We wouldn't be meeting like this." Hackles raised, he growled, deep and malicious, "I'd be bringing flowers to your grave." [break][break] Had the forbidden word been fully allowed to pass through the jaws of the larger brute, Leo would have snapped and a fight would have likely ensued. But the heated grounds would not see blood spilled that day as a crashing sound snapped Leo's attention elsewhere. An authoritative command filled the air stilled by the battling voices of the two brutes followed by the bulky body of a badger and his silver-sheened partner. Surprise took precedent over Leo's rage as he took a step back as Silver came between them. Iro taking the opportunity to slide into his wolf's shadow. His gaze flicked between Milo and Silver as the two spoke. The unexpected turn of events stilling his boiling hatred. Stunned to silence, Leo could only watch as their usually gentle Anima so fiercely reproached the former Au'Dar. [break][break] He was not so out of it that he didn't have the mind to bare his teeth and return Alesso's glare as the fawn brute ran off. Like a mirror to the past, the bloodied traitor turned tail and fled his home land an outlaw, shadowed by shame. Like throwing water on the flames, with the object of his hatred gone, Leo's rage died to a low smolder. Bronze eyes trailed after the fading form of Alesso. Only after the exile was out of sight did he turn his attention to the now silent Anima. He offered no explanation. What had occurred was clear to see. Instead, he met Silver's eyes, his voice chill and soft, "Why did you come?" Silver's anger had been a staggering display. He couldn't let it shake him, not if that same anger would fall on him. His ice became his walls and, now, he raised them.

I don't wanna live for nothing Watching the way Alesso-Milo had looked at her with such betrayal sent a blade into the snowy fae's heart, she hated it. Having to turn him away but it was for his own good. She could only imagine how hard it would be to avoid a place that was once home, perhaps those feelings were what kept her here in the first place instead of running off every time she was hit with the longing for more. If she could she would care for Milo, offer him a kind word, but that would do more harm than good. Perhaps harsh words would keep him away, at least that way he would be safe for if he was found here his life would be ended.
She found herself looking into the cold males eyes, something in the expression making her throat tighten but, like her feelings of woe and sadness, she buried it down deep where it couldn't affect her any more. "Why did I come?" She repeated, head tilting slightly, "a little bird told me I was needed to quell a fight before blood was spilt. A little bird concerned about his brother." She told him with a faint smile tugging at her lips, "and selfishly indulging my inner warrior for once." She added jokingly, looking down at Wynd who was still glaring after Milo. She nudged the top of his head with her nose, lulling the beastie out of his anger. "If you must follow him go ahead." She told her Tafa but before her sentence was finished the badger was off crashing through the underbrush. "And perhaps I came out of concern," she said, turning her attention back to Leocadio, "not that I don't believe in your fighting abilities of course."

[nospaces] [attr="class","letgo"] [attr="class","text"] [attr="class","scroll"] A mixture of emotions passed over Leo's face. Surprise followed by a softness that didn't usually appear. "Iscan," he murmured softly with all the kindness he gave no other. Of course it had been his little brother. Who else would care so much about him. The fact lightened his heart heavy with hate. Enough that a small laugh escaped him, "If you are to call yourself selfish, I do not think there is any hope for the rest of us." He had to admit that Silver carried herself with a nobility that others lacked. That nobility reminded him of Nuala's silver pride. Both faes worthy of respect though one had long lost his. [break][break] Iro watched Wynd crash after the fleeing back of the exile, but opted to remain at his partner's side. With the storm passed, the snake climbed up Leo's leg to curl himself around the wolf's neck. Leo lowering his head to allow the tafa easier access. The tafa's head coming to rest between the canine's ears. Iro's expressionless gaze focused on the Anima. The bond between wolf and tafa was said to be strongest among the shepherds and stronger still with the Anima, but even Leo struggled to know the inner thoughts of his own. Iro, much like his partner, was largely impassive. Watching the Anima interact with her own tafa, Leo did wish a little that Iro was more expressive at times. "Why don't you do that?" he asked the tafa quietly. The viper only buried himself deeper in Leo's fur as answer. That was all the answer Leo needed. The snake showed his care in a different way than others. Iro knew Leo sought comfort after the rain though he didn't show it outwardly. Milo's words had hit closer to home than Leo cared to show. [break][break] Silver's next words surprised Leo more than he expected. No one was concerned for him. It was as Alesso said. No one in the pack could stand his existence. "Concern," he repeated, mulling over the word as if it was foreign. Leo was perplexed by the thought, "For me?" The Anima wasn't wrong to be concerned though. Shepherds may have been trained to fight so they could protect the tafa, but they were no match against a warrior. Even exiled, Milo's larger size and expertise were a poor match for Leo. Leo had been well aware of that but still pressed forward anyways with his taunts. Had Silver not appeared, he'd likely have sustained serious injury.

I don't wanna live for nothing She saw those emotions fall across the brutes face, each of them more intriguing to the Anima than the last. It was rare to see any emotion on Leo's face at all, making this moment take root in her mind. She gave him a nod when he mentioned his brother and for a moment couldn't think of her three older brothers, her heart aching for a moment but then she sealed off the pain. They had all made their choices, to live as strangers. From the day she was born it was plain as day that she didn't belong and that sentiment continued into adulthood, even when her parents had tried to get in her good graces she brushed them away. She didn't want any falsehoods in her life even if it lent to a solitary existence that weighed on her like a fallen tree when she settled in for the night with her blessed Tafa was her only companion.
A small smile slipped across her lips when he said there was no hope if she was selfish, "everyone has their faults, even one as perfect as I." She said, her tone teasing and the joke unable to keep her from having a straight face as her own little laugh escaped her.
Her soft gaze swung back to the way Wynd had gone and she wondered if he would be back tonight, some nights he failed to appear but he did always come back by morning with little to no explanation as to where he had gone, but she didn't mind. Wynd had his own aspirations and she would never hold him back, no matter how much she missed him. Her ears perked, hearing Leo's question and she smiled a tiny bit, "you say that until he tries to kill you," she said, "sometimes Wynd is...a bit much." She said with fondness, "he is much where I am little, I suppose we balance out."
"Yes, concern, for you and Iro of course." Silver replied at his next question, her gaze flickering to the viper, "I'm glad Iscan came to me, I'm not sure why I was his first choice, but I'm thankful." She wasn't sure why Iscan would come to ask her for aid but even though she questioned it she was relieved it was her and not a group of warriors. Alesso, no, she reminded herself, Milo, had done a great wrong but she didn't want to see blood spilled.
The silvery fae straightened, peering at Leo, "don't go after him further, please, we need you in one piece."

[nospaces] [attr="class","letgo"] [attr="class","text"] [attr="class","scroll"] Some more than others. He was a wolf regarded by some as a walking mistake. A brute filled with faults. Of course Leo didn't agree, but the pain it left was all the same. Alesso had reminded him with the truth he didn't want to face that as much as he pretended, he wasn't free of mistakes. Why did the opinions of peons matter? He had to rebuild his walls so he could continue his farce. His smile was wry, "I wouldn't dare to believe it." [break][break] "Iro," Leos' eyes were light and laughing, lacking their usual harshness, "He would never." Though he joked, he knew the serpent would do whatever it took to stop him if he thought Leo was going down the wrong path. Even if that meant taking the life of his partner. "That is what our tafa do for us. They are our balance and our compass." Au'Dar legend claimed the tafa had been sent as guides by the four major gods. To lead the Au'Dar out of darkness and into the light. A noble goal and one Leo believed to be true. Now that Iro had entered his life, he couldn't imagine one without his partner. [break][break] The off-white brute couldn't help but feel a little smug. Alesso had said no one in the pack cared about him, but here was one. Even if that concern was due to obligation and not anything real. "He probably thought you the best one to handle the situation," Leo answered, thinking. Vargas may have been regarded as the wise one among the siblings, but Iscan had his one wisdom. He had been the one to be chosen to take on the role of healer after all with all of its complexities and knowledge required. Looking at Silver, his brother had made a good choice. She was a fae that garnered respect and, with how the situation had been turning, brute force wouldn't have been a good choice. "And I agree. You were the best choice." They didn't need more blood on these grounds. [break][break] Leo's gaze narrowed and he huffed, turning away. The Anima's words could be interpreted in many ways. Verbally. Physically. If Alesso came back, would Leo start up another fight? Sticks and stones and all that. He certainly wasn't going to chase after the brute now with Silver present. "If he comes back?" Leo said.

I don't wanna live for nothing He wouldn't believe it. Silver repeated what he said in her mind, her smile still playing across her lips, "we'll see about that." She replied, she had disappointed her entire family, it wouldn't be much of a stress to think that she would be able to disappoint the rest of her pack, including Leo.
Her smile continued when she saw the way his gaze seemed to brighten at the idea of Iro hurting him, she didn't tell many about her story of how she and Wynd had met each other, knowing that even though it made her laugh it might upset or worry others that her partner had tried to rip out her throat. Silver looked to Iro, her gaze soft, "count yourself lucky, I almost lost part of my tail." She joked, her tail flickering back and forth behind her as if Wynd was right behind her, ready to take a chunk of her flesh. She nodded as he agreed with her sentiment of the Tafa being their balance and compass, making her think of their packs legends that shaped their lives.
For a moment she paused when he agreed that she had been the best choice, something in her chest humming at the positive sentiment that was so rare coming from Leocadio. "Hmmm," she hummed softly, "I suppose in this case I was," she said teasingly, "I'll try to remember that you said that if we ever get in a spat." She continued to tease until he turned away with a huff, making her roll her eyes. She took a step closer to him, "if he is foolish enough to come back," she said softly, "then he deserves what he is met with, he knows better and this warning was a rarity...I won't be kind if there's a second time." As she spoke her claws dug into the ground, she hoped it wouldn't come to that and though her heart wouldn't want it, she knew she'd have to act in violence if he came back and she was informed of it. "But regardless, we still need you in one piece. I don't think Iscan would forgive me if you got hurt." She added in his brother, hoping to sate Leocadio further.
