R E V A N A sharp, pointed nose poked the ground, white tips paws soon to follow. He knew it was here somewhere, he could just barely smell the sweet scent of dried blood seeping through the ground, now he just had to find exactly where...
Raising his head, Revan's red eyes cast about the open forest, hoping to spot some fresh dirt or a mound, anything that might indicate a stash. Nothing. He gave a huff. The tall wolf continued nosing through the undergrowth, slinking under dried shrubs and rounding young beech trees. The scent was getting stronger... there! At the base of an oak, bigger than most others in the surrounding forest. His gaze followed the thick trunk, to a contrasting red brand. It was just a single claw mark, it seemed, but it was odd... it was still a mark, though, and must mean that the cache was right below. Revan paid no mind to the strange symbol, instead, he looked around with muzzle to the ground.
Aha! It was definitely here. When he was certain he was in the right spot, he began to dig with rapid strokes of his blunt claws, flinging plenty of dirt behind him. A little fur showed, and after a little more easy labor, he pulled out the prize of a snowshoe hare. There were a few plants in the little hole as well, though Revan didn't understand what they were for - keep the meat fresh, maybe? - and ignored them. He was in luck; the rabbit was barely decayed, and while stiff, it was still a good find. He set to dig in, when...

I was made to rise above it Timber was making her way through the forest, a new pep in her step, she was almost done with her seemingly endless task of refilling the stores. There was just one more left and it should be right over....
Thwap.
The fae blinked a couple times, going cross eyed as the focused on a small mound of dirt that had suddenly hit her nose. Her brows knit together in confusion and she shook her head, the thick fur around her face fanning out, more dirt freeing some it and falling to the side. What the hell was happening? She stepped farther into the clear to spot someone digging up the very store she had been looking for.
For a moment she was stunned in silence, just staring at this stranger tor into something that wasn't meant for him. Her teeth clenched, she was so close to being done and the pressure from all the days before hitting her all at once. Her emotions flung from enraged to the border of tears. All of that hard work...were there others raiding the food caches and she hadn't noticed?
Timber cleared her throat as she stared at the back of the brute. "What. Are. You. Doing?" She enunciated each word with careful control, trying to push the irritation to the bottom of her paw pads.

R E V A N A throat cleared just behind him, quickly followed by a tense voice. "What. Are. You. Doing?" Revan snatched up the carcass and spun his hindquarters around with an elegant leap-and-twist. Ruby eyes alit onto a robust figure, a female apparently, with an earthy pelt - of which he noticed was covered in specks of dirt, immediately knowing that it was his doing - and it was mishappened by countless scars. As he stared, he caught light, greenish eyes boring into his own of red. He was compelled to drop the hare, and with a stiff thud it fell to the fresh dirt.
"It's quite discourteous to interrupt one's meal," He retorted, ignoring her demanding question. Revan took in a whiff of her scent and another look at her appearance- how had he not noticed those marks before? He had mistaken the red insignia as even more scars, but in reality, were paints highlighting the imperfections. He was forgetful, but he was also quick; it took him only a second to piece the red marks on the woman's body and the red claw mark on the tree's trunk together. He raised his eyes back to her own, calm, yet challenging.
"I assume this is yours." Less of a question, and more like a guess he already knew the answer to. He remained standing over the dirty kill but left it alone for the time being. He was a little torn; on one side, he believed in finders keepers and wanted to take what he had found for himself - while on another side, this wolf had probably hunted it first, and by that law, it was rightfully theirs to protect. The dark man felt cursed by morals. Why should he even care if he was hungry enough? Nevertheless, he waited, eyeing the stranger with his typical scowl.

I was made to rise above it As the brute spun around, Timber stiffened. She was prepared to fight, though that was the last thing she wanted to do. As she sized up the brute who had snatched from the store she easily recognized that in a bought of physical strength, she didn't see herself coming out on top and she didn't necessarily feel like added more marks to her body.
"Wouldn't one say it's just as discourteous to steal another's meal?" She countered with a frown, but even with the unpleasant expression her irritation subsided. If someone like him was forced to raid cashes of food then it meant that he really needed it.
"Was mine," she corrected. sitting back on her haunches. It was just a rabbit after all, though it wasn't what she was prepared for, she would just have to take down another one, "you can keep it." she continued and cast her eyes to the sky, searching for the pale blue between the branches, "there's no reason for you to go hungry after digging that up from my Guilds cache. Also," she added, a playful smirk pulling at her lips, "I wouldn't want that scowl to get stuck on that face of yours." She teased, more so to see his reaction than anything else.

R E V A N A dry huff escaped Revan's maw as he rolled his red eyes. "I didn't see anyone feeding here before," He raised his head with an indignant tilt as if looking down upon the woman, unimpressed. "It's not as if I took it from the jaws of a cub." After all, hadn't it been for the odd signs on both her pelt and the oak above the cache, he could have taken this wolf as some loner just trying to be clever and steal what he had found first. Perhaps she was a loner, still, and in some way clever; to leave a seal of one's own markings to hold a claim on food is something he wouldn't have thought of, at least. Maybe he should just let her have it, then, damn it...
"Was mine, you can keep it." With new curiosity Revan watched her sit. "What?" He said, dumbfounded. She was...just letting him have it? For a moment he followed her gaze upwards, immediately feeling idiotic once he realized she wasn't looking at anything. He looked down to the female again, hopefully before she noticed. "You're...giving it to me?" His low voice was gruff and slow, as if trying to grasp the meaning of his own words. Why would she do that? He didn't understand, and he could feel it clear on his face.
"there's no reason for you to go hungry after digging that up from my Guilds cache. Also," He tilted his head just slightly, brow quirked. "I wouldn't want that scowl to get stuck on that face of yours." What?! This woman wasn't making any sense! First, she angrily approached him for digging up her food, then offered him said food, and now...now she was smiling at him? Toying with him? Revan stared blankly as he tried to comprehend it all. It wasn't the first time he had heard that expression, for some reason wolves kept referring to it with him, but he never understood why. "It isn't possible for a facial expression to last forever," How obvious did it have to be? Most pups knew this, he would have thought. "The muscles keep it ever moving." He said, the phrase passing over his head, typically. This encounter was nothing but confusing for him; the gifting of food, the teasing, the expression, the word Guild... what even was that, anyway? He had rarely if not ever heard that term before. He paused, thinking.
"What do you mean by 'Guild'?" He asked, forthright. And how was it a guild's cache? Did that mean she wasn't a loner? Did she have a pack? A family? A large brood of children, it almost sounded like? He was curious, to a point of forgetting about the once buried hare.

I was made to rise above it If she wasn't already looking at the sky Timber would have rolled her eyes as he tried to argue with her, but she wasn't going to continue the argument, either he was going to eat the rabbit or he was going to skulk off, it was no skin off her nose. Then it seemed to register to him what she had said.
"Yes," she lowered her head, leveling his burning gaze with the calm of her own, "I am giving it to you." She said, though wondered if this man was as deaf as he was gruff, "you already bit into it so you might as well finish it." She added and rose to her paws, figuring this might as well be the end of their discussion then he spoke again and for once, Timber was speechless.
Did he really not understand the joke? She stared at him, suddenly feeling embarrassment wash over her. This is what she got for attempting to flirt. Was she really that rusty? Though then again in her past she hadn't really had to flirt, her position in the pack and decent looks were enough to bring the men to her and to be frank-and a bit conceited-she didn't have to try to hard make them fall head over paw for them...until she had met her match in Myax. That midnight toned brute wouldn't give her a second look, he had made her work for him and though she enjoyed the feeling and the eventual victory of claiming his heart all she could think of now was how big of a mistake it was and how much of a fool she must have looked like to him but she also wondered...had it all been act? They had had children after all and even with all the heart break she refused to believe that all of it was a lie.
Though now as she stood there, staring, she started to think that maybe this man wasn't very...in tune with flirtations or maybe her flirting had been so good that if flew so far over his head that he hadn't been fast enough to jump and catch it. She shook a deep breath "that was a joke, I know how face muscles work and...eventually weaken." She smirked, though it was a bit misshaped thanks to the tearing marks in her muzzle.
"My Guild," She repeated, "is called the Mercurior. We are new to the valley, think of us as a pack of loners. We share a kinship but with the exception of twice a year we all live separately or in our own groups, taking on ranks that give them jobs so they can sharpen their skills and support themselves and as a member of the Guild a wolf is given access to stores, like the one you broke into," she nodded to the place where the rabbit had been, "and Guild member who needs something to eat or medicine is allowed to use what is in the stores and I am their Lord, which is like their alpha, I was checking the stores while on my way to the mountains."

R E V A N This was...awkward. Perhaps it was just him, but Revan felt like this situation couldn't get any tenser. Even if a fight broke out, that would make the tall man more relaxed; at least then he would know what to do. She lowered her gaze upon him, and he flicked his ear, uncertain. "Yes, I am giving it to you," confirmed the woman, "you already bit into it so you might as well finish it." What, did she think he was rabid or something? He huffed. He may be a broody, unpleasant mess of spiky fur, but he for sure knew he was better looking than some sickly creature ... maybe. "I'm not diseased," He said defiantly, almost childish.
Then, she stared, and he stared back. Was it something he said? Red eyes slipped to the side as he moved a step back, wondering if this would be the end of their interaction. He almost hoped... "that was a joke, I know how face muscles work and...eventually weaken." The woman finally said. Revan gazed at a distant bush, the cogwheels turning in his head. "Oh..." OH! He felt like such a dumbass. Had everyone been implying that his face would weaken into a constant frown? That didn't make much sense, be that the case, that would just make the muscles stronger, he thought. What a pathetic joke. "I am not keen on futile attempts at humor." Revan excused himself with a faint roll of his red eyes. He glared back towards the strange female, and for a first noticed that she seemed to be mildly embarrassed as well, offering an awkward smile. Or maybe just the scars making it seem that way, what did he know? Either way, perhaps he should spare her the worry. She had offered him food, oddly, it was his duty to return some favor. "I'm not very keen on social cues, either." He hated admitting it, it made him sound so...wrong, when he had done nothing wrong but ignore some poor excuse of a joke.
His sharp ears turned back from the tension- "My Guild," -they pricked forward again to listen. In a way that even he didn't quite understand, Revan was fascinated by new knowledge, and felt the innocent sense of curiosity bubbling within him at the knowledge of this 'guild.' However, his face remained a stony frown of indifference, perhaps only his eyes showing a spark of fascination. A pack of loners...with jobs to sharpen skills? "How...intriguing," He thought aloud. And they got free food in times of need, as well? As Revan followed the female's gaze to the hole next to him, something seemed to click in his mind. "Is that the meaning of such markings?" He inquired, giving a curt nod first to the insignia on the oak, then deliberately gazing at the markings outlining her scars.

I was made to rise above it Timber raised a brow at his declaration of not being diseased. If it wasn't for his size she would be question this mans age. She debated for a moment, moving on and leaving him behind, feeling a little...unsure as to how maneuver in this conversation.
"I see that." She replied when he admitted his weakness on observing humor and social cues, it was a bit obvious, though she would have to keep this in mind if their meeting were to continue. "But," she added, "social cues can be...tricky." Timber said, thinking of how others could manipulate their postures and wording to seem like innocent creatures when blood thirsty beasts hid under their pelts. Manipulation was something that she had seen be used for evil and uncovering it, seeing how vicious and uncaring someone could be dug a chill into her bones.
"Yes, that is the meaning of the markings," she responded to his question, it a was almost as if she could see the cogs turning and connections being made in his brain as he pieced it all together. "Upon joining each member gets a mark so that others in the Guild can recognize them as friend rather an foe and also understand each others ranks, it saves us from a lot of misunderstandings." She explained, looking back at him. "I have all of these," she gestured to the marks along her body in red, "because I am the Lord and I chose their placement. When I joined I only marked the scars on my muzzle but after becoming Lord I figured I'd add more." She shrugged, call it vanity, but sometimes she liked to be able to stand out, besides having these telling marks made others understand she wasn't just any Mercurior.

REVAN Sun won't shine down here in this valley But, social cues can be...tricky." the scarred woman said. Revan offered a rather disinterested hum. All he wanted was to forget the awkward situation, and slight embarrassment of his stupidity. And so, he did, quite easily just by keeping his maw shut and listening as the female went on about her...guild, thing.
"Yes, that is the meaning of the markings," How interesting. In his years of traveling, Revan had seen a lot of things, but crafted insignias to mark caches was something completely new. The dark man brought his red gaze up to the painted tree, his mind wandering as he took in this information. "Upon joining each member gets a mark so that others in the Guild can recognize them as a friend rather a foe, and also understand each other's ranks, it saves us from a lot of misunderstandings. I have all of these," Revan brought his gaze to the female, watching her gesture to her elaborate markings. "because I am the Lord, and I chose their placement. When I joined I only marked the scars on my muzzle but after becoming Lord I figured I'd add more." He had to admit, he couldn't care less about why or how she had chosen her decorations. But, the concept was quite intriguing indeed. Revan was partial to being on his own most of the time, being it was what he knew best, but sometimes he did miss that feeling of being in a pack. He had only joined one before, more or less a year ago, and in the time he was there it had been quite nice. Aside from the instance of being told what to do all the time and how to do his job, that is, and eventually being banished for whatever reason...other than that, yeah, it was pretty alright. Now he wondered, could this guild be the best of both worlds?
"What sort of jobs does this guild offer?" Revan asked, holding a skeptically curious tone. "The usual tasks most packs seem to have, I assume?" He wasn't going to let himself get hopeful before he knew for sure. If they were the same regular assignments, then it was hardly anything exciting. In that one pack, Revan had been a guardian or warrior, he wasn't sure what it had been called. But mostly all he did was patrol the territory, circling the perimeter over and over. It was better than being stuck at their densite, of course, but compared to roaming the lands and being able to explore new places, it was nothing. Why should I even care, though? It wasn't like he was going to join any group, after all. Though he sometimes longed for company, for something new and exciting, he was forced to consider that whatever pack or guild did offer that, they wouldn't want a member like him.
"This is Revan speaking. This is Revan thinking which is dangerous. Moon don't glow beneath these trees 494 words?? abyss i fuckin love you for this table Abyss

I was made to rise above it Judging by the lack of interest portrayed on the brutes face Timber hadn't been anticipating much more to their conversation so it took her by a bit of surprise when he spoke with a curious tone, asking her about more specifics of the Guild. "Our jobs are a bit different than a regular pack, everyone hunts for themselves and defends themselves so there is no need for hunters or warriors, rather we have jobs like Assassins, Spies, Mercenaries, and Healers." She spoke thoughtfully, remember her times in the ranks before taking on the position of Lord.
"We don't have territory to patrol or really duties to each other," she went on to explain, "as a member of the Guild it is expected to fill the stores if you have the ability and to take on jobs to support yourself and when Winter hits we offer the opportunity to live together as a pack, though it isn't a requirement. Even though one is a member of this Guild and holds our mark they still maintain their independence as long as they report general location to the top ranks in their trade and information about the jobs that are taken on. If there are no jobs assigned then those of lower rank are free to do as they please. We also meet during the Summer Solstice to offer the chance to rank up and touch base with each other."
She finally lapsed into silence, leaving it to the other to ask more questions or turn and walk away. She had pitched the information about her pack to many others during her time in the Mercurior and it was always a fifty fifty chance if someone was interested enough to join or would just laugh her off and leave. She had almost laughed and walked away herself when the idea had been presented to her, though the intrigue had been too strong for her to walk away.

[googlefont=Cinzel Decorative] REVAN Sun won't shine down here in this valley Sharp, pointed black ears were perked forward as he listened intently. What this woman said about her pack, or...guild, seemed almost too perfect for him to believe. He had seldom heard of such jobs in a group, but her mentioning of healers did bring one wolf to mind; Arsa. Revan let himself drift in thought as the guild leader spoke. Arsa was one thing he always had to consider - even if this group was legitimate, he could never leave his friend for any pack. Unless...perhaps Arsa would even be interested in this as well? What a curious thought. After leaving that ragtag pack however long ago, Revan had never considered joining another group alongside his travel companion. Perhaps, he concluded as Timber finished her speech, this was surely something they would have to talk about. The dark man locked eyes with the female once more while she continued.
"I've seldom heard of alliances with such independence," He commented after she was finished, "I will admit, I am intrigued." Of course, it probably wasn't hard to tell that a moody loner like himself would thrive in a pack with so few obligations, but that didn't mean they would want him there. "And, you let anyone join?" Revan asked skeptically. If it meant getting free food in those times of desperation, he had no problem with hunting small game and refilling some cache stores. What he didn't like was having to report back to some higher rank, it had orders like those that had gotten him kicked out...er, made him leave that old pack. But, then again, didn't he already do that with Arsa? He never minded checking up with how he was doing, or even when Arsa sought him out to do the same, so perhaps it was an exception he could manage. Now, it all depended on the battle-scarred woman, Timber, to consider letting some bothersome rogue like him into her ranks. And, he reminded himself, to talk with his best and only friend before making a final decision himself.
"This is Revan speaking. This is Revan thinking which is dangerous. Moon don't glow beneath these trees sad word count here I think he's just assuming timber knows what he's asking, so, go wherever with this skdjfsj Abyss

I was made to rise above it "Yes, we let anyone join. It's what you do while in the Guild that matters most, we don't judge others because of their history." She said with a small smile tinted with a bitterness as she thought of her own past and thirst for blood. If it wasn't for the Guild she doubted she would be in any other pack or alive for despair could only fuel someone for so long before taking their lives. She was lucky to have stayed strong for as long as she had.
Timber felt that their time for talk was coming to an end, her gaze flickered to the empty store that the male had pillaged. She still had work to do. She had made her pitch and he had seemed interested, there wasn't much else she could do-or think of doing to progress much more. "Think it over, it you still have interest it shouldn't be hard to find me. I do not have plans to leave the valley any time soon." She informed the brute, tail flickering at her back ankles as she thought of her Guild. They had no choice but to make this place work. "So it shouldn't be hard for you to find me, if you decide to join, if you see another wolf with a red brand like me you can let them know you want to be one of us and they can direct you to where I may be." She further instructed, in the end it would be up to the brute to take the effort to find her if he really wanted to be one with her group.

[googlefont=Cinzel Decorative] REVAN Sun won't shine down here in this valley "Interesting..." Revan thought aloud. Crimson eyes rested on the forest floor as he contemplated. If they let anyone join - even a sour, unpleasant jerk like him - and he wouldn't have someone bitching and nagging over where he was and what he was doing all the time? "I must say, I'm intrigued by the prospect," The morose man said, raising his eyes back to meet the woman's gaze. "I won't get my hopes up for anything remarkable yet, but, should I decide to test the waters I will track you down." Maybe...he could have worded that a bit better, with both his pessimistic comment on potentially being disappointed, and stalking the leader if he did make a decision. Either way, he saw nothing wrong with his statement, of course.
He followed her sage eyes to the dugout cache. Right...he had nearly forgotten about that, and hoped it wouldn't taint his probability of being welcomed into the guild thing. Before he could act on the hare that still laid before them, the scarred wolf spoke once more. "Think it over, it you still have interest it shouldn't be hard to find me. I do not have plans to leave the valley any time soon." Hopefully what she said was true, he wasn't about to play hide and seek over some pack, even if being unable to find the woman would likely be his own memory at fault. Revan's head titled just slightly as she went on to mention other wolves bearing their mark. How many of them were there lurking within this valley? He hadn't met too many wolves since travelling here with Arsa, but he wondered if some of them had been within this guild all along, he certainly wouldn't have remembered some strange insignia if they had one, he didn't even remember most of their names, come to think of it. What was this leader's name, anyway?
"Well, thank you, Ember," Ember? Cinder? Sounded close enough. Revan glanced over to the dugout hole once more, giving a brisk nod towards it. "I will...refill this, when I get the opportunity." He hesitated for a moment, before nodding a farewell to the female and stooping to snatch up the hare. He had no further questions, and he was eager to hunt down his companion and tell him all about this strange group, he was certain Arsa would be as intrigued as he was. Without a second glance, the lithe male turned and trotted off, slinking under the dense underbrush and disappearing into the shadows.
