- Axel -
The sun had risen not long ago, forcing Axel to his paws. He had been asleep at the time, and although he had wanted to laze about for a bit longer, the heat of the day soon became difficult to ignore. Though, it proved to be a blessing in disguise, forcing him to continue on his journey before discovering a large forest which quickly filled him with a sense of wonder. His tail swayed as he made his way between the trees with a gentle trot, captivated by the way they towered above him. The heat was still intense, but he appreciated the way the canopy sheltered him from the harsh sunlight. It seemed like the perfect place to stay until the sun set once more. That left him with lots of time to kill, but he was no stranger to forests; he was happiest in these sorts of environments, and didn't mind being confined to the area. Besides, this particular forest was so large, it was unlikely he would be able to explore it all in one day.
He had hoped to find a river to dive into for further relief from the heat, but it seemed there were none nearby. Continuing to look around, Axel soon realised just how sturdy some of the trees looked. It seemed the forest had been standing for countless years, causing him to wonder what kinds of secrets may lie within. He couldn't help but fantasise about going on some kind of magical adventure, allowing his imagination to wander and take his mind off the heat as he continued to wander through the forest.
Suddenly, a leaf dropped from one of the trees, drifting in front of him and catching his attention. Axel couldn't resist trying to catch it, his forepaw shifting a twig on the ground as he moved. A twig. It stole his attention almost immediately, causing him to pick it up before quickly running off as if he had just stolen it from someone. He was so used to trying to initiate games of chase that such actions were practically instinctive now. Although he knew there was no pursuer, he didn't want to stop running; he loved the way it felt to glide between the trees, using his agility to leap over any obstacles that crossed his path. That is, until he thought he could see movement up ahead, just on the other side of a bush. Not wanting to spook whatever it was, he tired skidding to halt, but he had been going a bit too fast and ended up stumbling right through the bush, his chin almost hitting the ground as he landed. Yet, the whole time, a pup-like grin remained upon his face as he continued to clutch onto the twig, scrambling to his paws as if nothing had happened.

[googlefont=Quicksand:700] ≠ Dante ≠ His coat of russet felt warm on his skin as the morning sun peeked over the horizon. It seemed to even glow against its touch as he strolled along, weaving between the trees of a forest he had spent the past few hours killing time in. A goofy smile strung across his lips as a freshly snagged hare hung comfortably between his jaws, a snack he would indulge in shortly. Relishing the warmth of the morning, Dante felt peaceful — the most peaceful he had felt in quite a long time, for once able to awaken from a night not plagued by nightmares. He hummed at the fleeting thought but averted his attention to something else to distract himself from lingering on the idea. With the sun crept higher in the sky, Dante decided to hunker down for the time being, as he could practically feel the soil absorb the radiating heat from above. Glancing around he spotted a fallen log, its roots ripped entirely out of the ground where it once grandly stood. He approached it and set his hare down, somewhat tucking it into the cool dirt slightly beneath the log to protect it from the growing heat. Taking one more glance around his quiet surroundings he laid down—belly face down, hind legs sprawled out behind him—placing his chin on the log. It was imperative for him to conserve his strength, especially now, as the days had grown hotter and water sources scarcer. But he couldn’t deny the unfathomable boredom that weighed him down more than the actual temperature. He inhaled heavily through his nose, his goofy grin having dropped to an unimpressed, childish frown as his reddish eyes lazily rolled left and right in an attempt to keep himself occupied. The chirping of birds filled his ears, and before he could be lulled off, a curious rustling jolted him back to alertness. His body remained still but his eyes grew wide as they darted to the direction of the rustling. Through the brush he saw yet another hare hunched over, searching diligently along the ground. How lucky, Dante thought as he relaxed, but he felt no inclination to seize it. Whether a product of laziness or exhaustion, he didn’t have the willpower to move. He was too comfortable. So instead he resorted to simply observing it do its hare thing, and after a minute or so he felt a little spark of fondness well up in his chest. Ironically enough, he had almost completely forgotten about the hare corpse at his side. The calmness of the moment went as quickly as it came. A chorus of rustling sliced the silence, coming not too far away from where the hare perked up curiously from within the bush. Dante perked up as well after realizing the rustling was coming towards him. He squinted his eyes to get a better view between the trees but to no avail. Just as he was about to try and get a closer look, though, a wolf suddenly barreled through the brush, scaring the poor hare, which fled with hidden briskness. Dante watched as the wolf, who looked to be around his age, nearly hit the ground, but what gave him pause—and stopped him from jumping to his paws —was the prominent grin on the stranger’s face. The stranger of cream and brown had a twig in his mouth and seemed to have been running. Running from someone? Chasing something? Dante hadn’t a clue, but despite the shift in the atmosphere, he remained situated where he laid, sprawled out, chin still on the log. The only difference in his countenance was his eyes that had widened again. There was no trying to muster a nonchalant expression; not with movement as swift as the stranger’s. The young man blinked stupidly for a few seconds, completely dumbfounded at what to do. He sensed no immediate malice and thus lost almost all motivation to move. There was a knot in his throat that wouldn’t budge, even after clearing his throat. After a few more seconds he began to feel the pressure to say something, anything. “Uh. Hi.” The words fell faster than he could process them. Well, that’s that, he thought with defeat before finally bringing himself to sit upright, the log serving as the only thing between him and the stranger. “Are you… okay? You took… quite a tumble.” Great observation. Dante had no reason to feel as awkward as he felt, but he did his best regardless to give the stranger a sympathetic smile and humored glint of his eyes. Before he could shake the leaves and twigs from his pelt, Axel's eyes met with those of a stranger, causing him to pause for a moment, failing to notice the hare he had just startled. He quickly dropped the twig he had been playing with, trying to assess whether the russet-furred wolf was friend or foe. They just stared at each other for a moment, blinking awkwardly. Neither were sure what to say until, at last, the other wolf spoke, giving a somewhat casual greeting which suggested no immediate threat. However, as the stranger sat up, he realised that the other wolf appeared to be a bit taller than he was; he couldn't help but feel a little uneasy about it. Although he wanted to return the greeting, he instead found himself giving a subtle nervous laugh. It didn't last long though, for the other wolf asked if he was okay, prompting him to give a response. Axel quickly shook the small pieces of bush from his fur, scattering them across the ground before taking a single step forwards.
"Yeah, I'm okay." The response was rather casual as he turned his attention to their surroundings, making sure the other wolf remained in his peripheral vision as he observed the foliage. The stranger's expression seemed friendly at least, allowing him to relax a little and respond in a similarly friendly tone. "Sorry if I disturbed you, by the way. I didn't think I would run into anyone else out here." Now that he knew there was someone watching, he kind of wished he had leapt over the bush instead, regardless of any prey there may have been to spook. Suddenly, he remembered the reason he had tried to stop running in the first place. It appeared the stranger had been resting, so it was likely the movement he saw had been caused by something else entirely. Axel gave the air a quick sniff, noticing the scent of hare he had been too distracted to pay any attention to earlier. It seemed to be very close by.
"You wouldn't happen to have seen a hare around here, would you? Don't tell me I just missed mealtime." His tone became somewhat playful as he spoke. He would have thought there would be a strong scent of blood if the stranger had just eaten, but he couldn't resist throwing the joke in regardless. He tried not to let it show, but he was still a little intimidated, and he thought a bit of humour might help to lighten the mood. Whilst he listened for the wolf's response, he tried to pinpoint where the scent was coming from, but only ended up getting confused. It seemed like it was coming from two directions at once.

[googlefont=Quicksand:700] ≠ Dante ≠ Dante’s reddish eyes flitted from the stranger to the trees behind him, a brow curving curiously upwards. He doubted it but a protective—er, self-preservative inclination urged him to determine why the stranger had been running, whether it was just because, or a means to escape. Dante didn’t want for, should the answer be the latter, the stranger to have brought his pursuer directly to him. However, there was no denying that he wanted the stranger to be safe regardless of him being just that. Concern eclipsed his eyes, the fine lines of his face tightening with concentration as he focused for a few silent moments. Though, the stranger’s voice brought him back to the present as he confirmed that he was okay with a nervous laugh. It seemed he felt no less awkward about the situation the two were abruptly thrust into. All Dante felt he could do was smile apologetically and keep his posture loose, even pushing his back forward in an lavish stretch. He sighed with relief, visibly relaxing once he heard a subtle, fulfilling pop in his spine. "Sorry if I disturbed you, by the way. I didn't think I would run into anyone else out here." The stranger’s tone was friendly and his words prompted Dante’s apologetic smile to turn more casual. He shook his head with a hum. “No need to apologize. If anything, I owe you one, for interrupting your morning jog.” His smile widened and the tips of his pearly canines peeked from beneath his lip. “A little warm for one, is it? Unless… you were running from something?” He asked in good nature, but the second question slipped out before he could stop it. Oh well, at least with a direct question he could have his suspicions quelled, even if they mostly already were. He leaned back on his haunches a bit to get more comfortable, trying to settle into the patch of admittedly dry ground he occupied. There was no helping it, this drought, but fortunately, Dante was well-equipped to adapt. The stranger asked if Dante happened to have seen a hare in the area before adding a playful comment about mealtime. His ear twitched as it fell to the side upon his realization of the hare carcass beside him, of which his gaze fell on. Oh yeah. It was his turn to laugh nervously; he could tell the stranger was trying to pinpoint the direction the hare fled but was confused in the crossfire of scents created by Dante’s catch tucked behind the log. “You just missed him,” he jested in reference to the hare. His nose instinctively pointed towards where it disappeared, offering the stranger a hint if he were so inclined to take it. “But…” he paused while grabbing the carcass and placing it on top of the log in full display. “If you’re exhausted from your run, I offer you a better solution. My apology, if you will.” His smile remained intact as he stood, picking up the carcass and stepping over the log to meet the stranger halfway. He placed it down, even making an effort to take his eyes off the other male in a show of trust. “Two's better than one, right?” His tail wagged slightly. He would make sure to step back if the stranger advanced forward. Zawki

The stranger's demeanour remained calm and friendly, allowing Axel to relax a bit. The other wolf even offered an apology in return. This was new to him; he was so used to his playful side being seen as a nuisance that it seemed unusual for someone to feel guilty for interrupting him, especially when it was by no fault of their own.
"It's not your fault," He responded with a smile. "It's not like you could have known I would come hurtling through a bush into this exact spot." He gave a light, somewhat embarrassed chuckle as he glanced down at the ground, trying to find the twig he had been playing with, but it appeared to be lost amongst the leaves and scattered pieces of bush from his arrival. Not that it mattered. The game already seemed boring in comparison to having some friendly company at last. His tail swayed lightly as he turned his head to face the stranger once more, listening as the russet wolf continued to speak. The mention of the day's warmth brought Axel's attention back to the intense heat for a moment, but he was soon distracted by the query that followed.
"Oh..." He paused for a moment, unsure what to say. "Well, uh..." His smile quickly turned into an awkward grin. "Y-yeah! That's what happened. An... an angry squirrel was chasing me." The moment the words came out, he realised just how ridiculous the excuse sounded, but it seemed unlikely he would be able to recover it from there. Giving a defeated sigh, he continued. "No... I wasn't being chased. I just felt the need to stretch my legs and go for a run, but as you can see, it didn't quite go to plan." He gestured with his head to the scattered foliage. Now that he had said it, he was starting to wonder why he didn't just get straight to the point in the first place; it wasn't quite as embarrassing as he thought it would be.
The stranger soon informed him that he had just missed the hare he had been trying to find, gesturing in the direction it had gone. He briefly turned to look, but quickly turned his head back when it seemed the other wolf had more to say. Like some kind of magic trick, the stranger pulled a fresh hare carcass out from beneath the log, causing Axel's tail to wag in surprise as his expression lit up at the sight.
"Woah!" He took a few steps forwards, curiously lifting his head to try and work out where the carcass had been hidden. To his surprise, the stranger chose to offer the meal to him. He hesitated briefly, his gaze flitting between the other wolf and meal a couple of times. "Are you... sure?" It sure looked delicious. The stranger decided to bring it a bit closer, but their difference in height soon became more apparent as he stepped over the log. Axel took a couple of steps backwards, his ears dropping slightly as he watched tentatively. Although he felt fairly safe, he couldn't help but find it a bit intimidating. Though, it wasn't long before the russet wolf placed the hare on the ground, even averting his gaze a bit to show that he wasn't a threat.
“Two's better than one, right?” The words were accompanied by a gentle wag of the tail. Realising that there was nothing to be afraid of, Axel took a step closer, returning the wag somewhat solemnly as he looked down at the hare. There were two ways he could interpret that sentence, and he knew which one he preferred.
"Yeah... which is why I think we should share it." He gave a playful grin, laying down in front of the hare before crossing his forelegs. "Meals are always better when enjoyed with friends." He closed his eyes briefly as he tilted his head happily, inviting the other wolf to join him shortly before he began eating his share. The hare may have been little more than a snack, but it was enough to keep him engrossed for a little while, until he suddenly lifted his head back up as if he had suddenly remembered something he wanted to say.
"I'm Axel, by the way." His tone was friendly - albeit very casual - as his attention shifted to the other wolf, suddenly curious to know his name. "What should I call you?" Now that he knew the stranger wasn't going to hurt him and seemed to be quite easy-going, he wanted to get to know him a bit better. Whilst he listened out for a response, he quickly took another bite of the hare, licking his lips as he glanced back up. Even if he wasn't desperate for food, he could always appreciate a good snack.

[googlefont=Quicksand:700] ≠ Dante ≠ "It's not like you could have known I would come hurtling through a bush into this exact spot." Dante chuckled along with the stranger and hummed in acknowledgment. He was pleased to have found good company—or, at least, good company found him. The image of the stranger falling almost chin first into the ground flashed through his mind at the mention of him hurtling through the bush, and Dante’s tail swished with amusement. The stranger went on to explain how… an angry squirrel? Was chasing him? Now that was curious. The russet male’s head cocked to the side, his expression practically imploring the other to elaborate. He was tempted to ask what he had done to provoke a squirrel of all creatures, and though something had been chasing him, it was nothing Dante needed to worry about. But, the stranger’s demeanor shifted, prompting him to pause his entertaining thoughts. "No... I wasn't being chased. I just felt the need to stretch my legs and go for a run, but as you can see, it didn't quite go to plan." Before he could think to stay cool and nonchalant, a snort of delight left his nose. So that was it. He tried to stifle a laugh but was unsuccessful, too far into a good mood to quiet himself. “Is that so? Heat or not, a run is always nice, and... plans are meant to be ruined,” his tone was matter-of-fact but clearly faux. “But an angry squirrel? I’ve never heard that one before.” he teased. He had definitely heard and conjured his fair share of excuses, but one about an angry squirrel was especially creative, and, to his enjoyment, wasn't entirely unbelievable. The stranger lit up at Dante’s offer, a feeling of satisfaction welling up in his chest. He asked if Dante was sure, to which he exaggerated a firm nod. He said they should share it, which had been the russet male’s intention all along, and he returned his playful grin. He copied the stranger’s movements, laying down, and sprawled his hind legs out behind him like before, resting on his belly with his forepaws crossed. He let the other male have his share first, his own fluffy ears twitching in content in response to the filling sounds of the birds overhead. “Indeed they are, I can always welcome a turn of fate,” he mused whimsically. He had no solid plans on making acquaintances with anyone, but he would never pass on the opportunity to expand his corner. The brown male introduced himself as Axel. At last, Dante had a name to put to his face, one quite unique. “Axel,” he tested on his tongue, ensuring he could correctly enunciate the syllables. Axel asked for his name, to which he promptly responded, “Call me Dante.”As he watched his new friend peck away at his offering, a question crossed him, and he wondered if Axel belonged somewhere. He hadn’t noticed a lingering scent of a distinct pack, he realized, so he presumed he was a loner like himself. He didn’t know the land very well, but knew for certain there were packs who inhabited it. He couldn’t be sure so he was compelled to ask anyway; even if his presumption was true, perhaps Axel had intel on them. “I am new around here, so forgive me for assuming, but are you a loner like myself?”Zawki

- Axel -
The stranger appeared to be amused by the 'angry squirrel' excuse, causing Axel's tail to sway. Making up excuses on the spot was something he found himself doing all too often, but it was rare for the failed attempts to go down quite so well. Though, in this case, it seemed he had sabotaged his own excuse before he had even given it a proper chance. However, that wasn't necessarily a bad thing. He saw no good reason to hide the truth from the stranger, after all.
It wasn't long before they were both lying on the ground, exchanging a conversation over the fresh hare. Axel's head remained down for most of it as he tucked into the meat, occasionally perking up to listen or make his own comment. There might not have been a lot there to go around, but it was satisfying to eat nonetheless. His ears shifted as he heard his name echoed by the other wolf, soon followed by the reveal of the stranger's own name. 'Dante...' The name was unfamiliar to him.
"I don't think I've ever heard a name like that before," he commented. "I like it" He tried his best to commit it to memory, not wanting to forget it and have to go through the awkward process of asking for a reminder. Luckily it was fairly short, which was bound to make things a bit easier. He lowered his head once more to take another bite of the hare, lifting his head again when Dante continued to speak. It seemed the wolf had guessed that he was a loner, adding on that he too was a lone wolf who had recently arrived. Axel's ears swivelled back briefly as he remembered that it probably wouldn't be too long before he had to set out on his own once more. Exploring new lands was quite the adventure, but this place was still yet to feel quite like home.
"I am." He sounded somewhat surprised that Dante had managed to guess correctly. "I only arrived here a few days ago, but it's been so hot the entire time... I've never known anything like it." He glanced up at the canopy, squinting as the sunlight shone between the leaves. "Surely it has to rain eventually..." It wasn't long before his thoughts began to wander, causing his tail to wag lightly as he continued. "Where I'm from, sometimes it would snow really heavily. Then, when the snow melted, the floodwater from the mountains would make the rivers really fast and exciting." Even just thinking about it made him happy.
As Axel went to take another bite of the hare, he hesitated briefly, staring at it with an awkward smile before giving a short, nervous laugh. Distracted by the conversation, it seemed he had accidentally eaten more than his share. Hoping it wouldn't be so obvious from the other side of the carcass, he gently slid out a paw to nudge it towards the other wolf, averting his gaze to try and hide the glimmer of amusement in his eyes.

[googlefont=Quicksand:700] ≠ Dante ≠ "I don't think I've ever heard a name like that before. I like it." said Axel in response to Dante giving his name. The russet male’s tail instinctively wagged at his words as it swept away at the dry forest floor, collecting loose dirt and debris. “Likewise, my friend. I guess that makes us two of a kind, huh?” he followed up heartily. Axel continued, confirming Dante’s assumption with an edge of surprise in his voice. He grinned at this, proud that he had managed to guess correctly, not that there was much of a shadow of doubt in his mind otherwise. He commented on the weather, at which Dante nodded in agreement, his expression softening into something more solemn or wistful. He had never known the weather to be so volatile, for he had the luxury of living in higher elevations where the temperature was often more consistent, even if the passing seasons prompted two extreme ends of the spectrum. "Where I'm from, sometimes it would snow really heavily. Then, when the snow melted, the floodwater from the mountains would make the rivers really fast and exciting." said Axel excitedly. The feeling was contagious as Dante immediately perked up at the mention of his homeland, and observed how it made him feel. “Whoa, that’s awesome! I come from the mountains—” a forepaw lifted as he gingerly shook it towards the other male, a boastful, playful smile on his muzzle, “—not to brag or anything, but they were some really big mountains.” He tried to contain the true, jesting smile hiding under the facade of pride, but to no avail. “But really! I lived next to this massive waterfall that always grew tenfold after the winter.” The comment may or may not have been exaggerated but the excitement to share a piece of himself was overwhelming, especially now that it felt warranted. “Though… the winter runoff always made the water all the more cold and painful to drink.” His brow tensed at the thought, and like muscle memory, the nerves in his mouth near his teeth ached. He laughed regardless, partly to entertain Axel but also in hopes that he could resonate with him. The russet male noticed his friend pause mid-bite and his eyes lowered to the care carcass that had already been forgotten a second time. He noticed Axel’s awkward smile, then heard his nervous laugh, to which he snickered at. It was evident to Dante that he had eaten a little over half of the carcass, which the other nudged forward, and he smiled sympathetically. “Guess you were hungry,” Dante teased. Without skipping a beat he took a nibble from it and felt a part of his body relax, but he perked up again as a new thought reached him. He looked at his brown eyes, his own bright with renewed light. “What if we tracked down that other hare? I could use a bit of a run, myself.” His words were half true, as deep down he felt he would be more content lounging in the shade, but engaging in something adrenaline-inducing with someone new sounded appealing to the puckish male. “What do ya say, Axel? Care to indulge with me in a hunt?”Zawki

- Axel -
Axel's tail swayed lightly once more as he listened to the stories about Dante's homeland, trying to imagine the enormous mountains and magnificent waterfall. "That sounds amazing!" He had seen waterfalls before, but he doubted they were nearly as impressive. However, it seemed his new friend was not a fan of the way the cold made the water painful to drink. Axel could relate a little, but usually, that was the least of his concerns. "If you think that's bad, just wait until your fur gets wet in the middle of winter," he responded, returning the laugh.
It seemed Dante had figured out what happened to the hare carcass right away, but fortunately, it didn't appear to bother him; the russet wolf merely teased that he must have been hungry. Axel just kept smiling, deciding not to bring up the fact that it hadn't actually been too long since his last meal. Though, that didn't stop him from appreciating the extra food. He figured Dante wasn't exactly desperate either, judging by the way he was so willing to share. He was just relieved he had managed to stop himself before it was all gone.
Before long, Dante suddenly perked up from his share of the carcass. Their eyes met as he began to speak, suggesting that they go and track down the hare that got away earlier. It didn't seem entirely necessary, but with prey travelling further in search of water now that the rivers and lakes were drying up, it did seem like an opportunity worth taking. Not only that, but if the hare had wandered off deeper into the forest, there was a chance it could make for quite an exciting little adventure. Axel quickly rose to his paws, tail wagging at the thought.
"Of course! As my last run was cut short, this could be a good chance to stretch my legs some more." He fell into a stance similar to that of a play bow, stretching out his forelegs as if to prepare himself for the action. This time, something really would be getting chased, and it wouldn't be him. At least, he hoped he wouldn't be getting chased. "Come on, let's go!" Eager to begin, he bounded off into the underbrush, pausing after a couple of seconds to make sure that Dante was following. Although he could be a bit scatter-brained at times, Axel's good sense of direction had allowed him to remember which way his friend had pointed when mentioning the hare previously, providing a good opportunity to seek out the trail where the scent from the carcass would not interfere too much.
"My brother and I used to track animals all the time when we were pups," he began, lowing his head to the ground as he searched for the hare's scent. "We usually ended up just watching the wildlife, but it was always a lot of fun." He couldn't help but think of it a bit like a game of hide and seek. He gave a gentle wag of his tail when he found the trail, trotting along happily for about a couple of metres before stopping to sniff again. "It seems the hare went this way," he said with a tilt of his head, gesturing in the direction it went. "Let's see who can find it first!"

[googlefont=Quicksand:700] ≠ Dante ≠ Dante basked in the wonderment that showed on Axel’s face at his stories, a proud but genuine smile on his face. He made a quip about wet fur in the winter, causing an exaggerated wince to form. “I’ll pass,” he laughed, “I take pride in my northern heritage but I was simply not shaped for the fury of winter." There was a whimsical tune in his voice as he reminisced. “Besides, winter in the mountains was brutal!”At the proposal of a hunt, Axel perked up, mentioning how he could stretch his legs some more. Dante agreed internally. He had done nothing but lounge around all morning, wasting away it felt like. With the heat of the oncoming day becoming more and more prevalent, working up a rewarding sweat would ease the young male’s innate worries about being useless, even if he had all the time in the world now, all to himself. Distracted by his friend’s play bow, he copied him in preparation. "Come on, let's go!" he urged, the words increasing Dante’s heart rate without skipping a beat. When Axel bounded off, he caught up quickly, nearly passing him when he paused to ensure Dante was keeping up. But Dante remained just a hair behind him as they tracked their target, the scent of hare still fresh in his nostrils. His friend spoke about how he and his brother used to track animals together in their youth. There was a moment where Dante didn’t say anything and proceeded on, but there was a very brief hesitation in his actions that he quickly covered up. “Yeah, my brother and I would do the same thing, in a way, but with our training.” His voice was rather soft, unlike before. “We were in the same division growing up, where we learned military tactics and strategies.” His words almost didn’t feel like his own as he spoke; like they really didn’t correlate with what Axel was saying. He sounded uplifted, but there was an undeniable sinking feeling in his chest, the wounds still fresh in his soul and, though unnoticeably, his body. Dante inhaled with his surprise as Axel perked up, challenging him. The russet male smirked. “Guess I don’t have a choice, then. You’re on,” he joked, his mood turning in an instant. “But first, how about, whoever kills it gets first dibs on it.” he proposed. Might as well make things a little interesting. Picking up the pace Dante moved along, nose glued to the ground once more, feeling reinvigorated as the breeze hit his face. He missed this; not just the adrenaline half but having the incentive to simply move. Not a second later the scent of hare grew stronger, which centered his straying mind as his quick but admittedly loose movements became tighter automatically. With a pointed smile at his friend, Dante took off, wasting no time in pursuing their target that crested the horizon just beyond the trees. His approach was a little less than stealthy; the shrewd hare sensed the looming threat and fled. His veins pumped as he maneuvered along seamlessly through the twists and turns, and it appeared as though the prize was his. But, at the last ever possible moment, right as he was poised to lunge—completely going for it—a precariously misplaced twig on slick ground foiled him. Down he went. Zawki

As Dante joined him in his search for the hare, Axel's tail began to sway a bit faster. He gave a grin of acknowledgement to his new friend, finally beginning to get used to their difference in height. It had been a long time since he last had an opportunity to work together with another wolf, and it was something he was really looking forward to.
When he tried to start a conversation, there was a brief pause before Dante responded, but he figured his friend was simply engrossed in the search and thought nothing of it. However, something about the response did sound a bit different. 'Maybe he misses his brother,' he thought to himself. As he continued to listen, Axel realised that they seemed to have a lot in common. He was intrigued by it all, and he couldn't help but smile as he noticed the more uplifted tone in Dante's voice
"That's amazing! My brother and I used to train together as well," he responded. "We were training to become guardians of our homeland, but he was way more into it than I was. No matter how hard I tried, he always seemed to win two out of three times whenever we sparred together." He paused for a moment, suddenly giving a somewhat mischievous grin. "Though, there was this one time I hit him against the ground too hard and accidently knocked him unconscious. At first, I was worried I'd killed him, but it turned out he was just fine." He could recall being panicked at the time, but now he just found it amusing. "It seems I didn't know my own strength."
Before long, the hare's trail became clear, and Dante accepted the challenge to see who could find the hare first. He even added his own rule to the game. With a quick nod, Axel sniffed the air once more, eager to begin. As he followed the trail, it soon became stronger, causing him to glance Dante's way to see if he had noticed it too. It seemed his friend most certainly had, because he was met with a smile before the russet wolf suddenly darted off after the hare. His eyes widened as he was left behind, his paws scrambling against the forest floor as he tried to run after him. Catching up in time seemed like it would be difficult, but he was determined to try, even if it was just for the thrill of running as fast as he could whilst dodging the obstacles along their path. However, just as Dante was finally within range of the hare and about to strike, he suddenly slipped and fell. Axel tried to stop as quickly as he could, kicking up a few fallen leaves as he came skidding right past his friend, coming to a stop before hurriedly running over.
"Are you okay?" He stopped just in front of the wolf, taking a moment to catch his breath. "You took quite a tumble," he said with a playful grin, quoting Dante's words from earlier. He wasn't sure whether to be amused or concerned, but it was quite ironic how the tables had turned.

[googlefont=Quicksand:700] ≠ Dante ≠ Dante continued along, indulging in his task, listening to Axel as he spoke about his brother and himself. He could resonate with the disparity between the brothers’ strengths. Between his and his own brother’s, he had always been the stronger one. It had always been that way, so much so that his family labeled him a prodigy because of it. He always thought it to be an exaggeration that never failed to humble him in the best way, but even then he strove to live up to the title, even if that meant leaving his brother behind. An involuntary chuckle bubbled from within his throat as he recalled back to just a mere few months ago. His reddish eyes turned to study the other male’s profile momentarily, just in time to catch his mischievous smile. His brow furrowed curiously, as he returned a mischievous smile of his own. So Axel knocked his brother unconscious once? Dante hummed in amusement, trying to envision it. Raising his head, breaking away from the trail, Dante bumped his shoulder against Axel’s playfully. “Strength can manifest in even the smallest of bodies. I’m very proud.” he teased with delight, sniffling dramatically as his eyes secretly sparkled with mischief. Chills surged across his skin, making his fur prickle. He hadn’t felt this invigorated and simply… uplifted in what felt like ages. Aside from time spent recuperating and healing, he had been forced off of his feet and, consequently, away from others. Axel was the first soul he’d interacted with since leaving his homeland. What a welcoming sign, it was. Dante’s eyes widened upon hitting the ground but for once it wasn’t at his own expense. Why was Axel approaching him and not chasing after the hare? Why did he stop? It was getting away! He wasted not a second in scrambling to his paws again but paused as he heard Axel play his earlier words right back at him. A scoff came to him naturally along with a playful roll of his eyes. “I’m fine but why didn’t you go after the hare? You totally could have gotten it!” He practically whined, drawing out the last few vowels and looking towards the direction where the hare scampered away. “I won’t move from this spot until y—” a tickle forming along his back had him involuntarily coiling up to aggressively shake out his fur. After thoroughly finished he cleared his throat, straightened his posture, and feigned a serious expression at the other male. Inhale. “I won’t move from this spot until you do. You get a five-second start. It’s only fair!” He would stand his ground on this. He blundered his opportunity. Zawki

Dante was... proud of him? Such words were ones he rarely had the pleasure of hearing. Axel couldn't help but lower his gaze to the forest floor, smiling awkwardly as he continued to make his way through the underbrush. He was probably blushing beneath his thick fur, suddenly feeling a little bashful. He would be surprised to hear something like that from his own mother, yet alone someone he barely knew. For a moment, he began to wonder whether or not Dante really meant it, but his new friend didn't seem like the dishonest kind. He wasn't sure how to respond, though he knew he was happy.
As the hunt progressed, it wasn't long before Axel found himself standing in front of Dante, concerned that he may have been hurt when he fell to the ground. To his relief, the russet wolf quickly assured him he was just fine, causing Axel's tail to begin to sway. As he was questioned about why he didn't keep chasing after the hare, his tail only began to wag faster. The look of concern on his face had now been replaced by a guilty smile, clearly more amused than he was sorry.
"Maybe I would rather catch a Dante," he responded playfully. "It looks like the ground got there first though..." He was almost a little disappointed, but alas, there was no way he could have made it in time. Something he could have made it to, however, was the hare. Considering he still owed Dante a new snack, he did feel a little guilty, yet... part of him was also relieved. As much as he didn't want to admit it, he was actually glad he didn't have to make the kill himself; or at least, so he thought. It seemed his friend wanted to continue, giving a quick shake and attempting to look all serious before insisting on giving him a five-second head start. Axel gave a short sigh. Perhaps he wasn't getting out of it so easily after all.
"But it's only fun if we do it together," he argued. "If you're not going anywhere, neither am I." Reluctant to go alone, he decided to sit, neatly tucking his tail around to meet his forepaws. They would soon see who the most stubborn wolf was. He was either going with Dante, or not at all.

[googlefont=Quicksand:700] ≠ dante ≠ Dante squinted his eyes playfully in mock suspicion as he noticed Axel’s tail sway faster at his reprimand. He scoffed in response to his comments, turning away momentarily for dramatic flair. “No kidding. Guess the ground can’t resist us young, spry men, huh?” He giggled, his own tail moving gently with the wind. There was a little bit of lingering pain in his upper body but his attention was elsewhere as the adrenaline nulled any concern for his wellbeing. Since he had mentioned it, a game of tag did sound exciting, and judging from both of their stubbornness it was looking more and more like the hare would get to live to see another dawn. “Uh oh. This is dangerous, having two stubborn people work together.” Dante sighed and shook his head before laughing at his friend who sat down. So that’s how it’s going to be. His eyes traveled back towards where the hare fled, unable to see it through the forest foliage, not even hear the sounds of its thumping feet. It was gaining distance on them and even though they could easily catch up with it, he no longer felt hungry, and it seemed Axel’s hunt drive was diminishing as well, but it was evident to him that they both wanted to continue running, at the very least. So he turned to the other male with a sparkle in his eyes, one less mischievous. “Well, since we’re both resolute, why don’t we do something more mindless? But with what just happened though I'll probably regret suggesting that." He laughed again. "I wouldn’t mind taking you up on that offer.”Zawki

Axel couldn’t help but smile at his friend's response, barely able to contain his laughter. It seemed the ground really did fancy them, considering they had both been tripped up in one day. Either that, or maybe they were just as klutzy as each other, but he liked to think it was the former.
He watched as Dante glanced in the hare’s direction, seemingly considering the options. He could tell his friend had an idea, and the suspense was killing him. Luckily, he didn’t have to wait long before the russet wolf continued, suggesting that they do something more mindless instead. At this, Axel got to his paws, tail swaying happily once more. Although mindless activities generally weren't the safest, there was no denying that they were fun.
"What could possibly go wrong?" he teased, knowing all too well that this sounded like a bad idea already. Yet... he didn't actually know what the idea even was. As he continued to listen, Dante proceeded to tell him that he would like to take him up on his offer, but Axel couldn't recall what it was he had said.
"My offer?" he asked with a tilt of his head, the confusion evident in his expression; that is, until he was hit with a sudden realisation. "Oh, right! That!" His friend must have been referring to when he said he would rather catch him than the hare. A game of chase wasn't quite what he meant, but it sounded like a lot of fun nonetheless. "Alright then." Dropping into a play bow, he looked up at Dante with a swish of his tail. "This time, I'll be the one giving you the head start!"
