I know I always come and go "I'll make sure they all learn how to climb trees and cause all the problems." Maxem said, lifting his head with pride. He would love to Hawk and Athena trying to wrangle a crazy litter of puppies that he would definitely be encouraging to act wild.
"Wait," Maxem stopped, spinning around to face Hawk, "you need help? With what?" He asked, practically bouncing on his paws as he wondered what Hawk had planned, if it was good enough he would be willing to pass up teaching to help Hawk out with whatever he was planning. To be fair though, Maxem didn't really have a plan to train Hawk, he was just going to make it up as they went along and hope for the best, though the idea made him a bit nervous.
He didn't want to embarrass himself in front of Hawk even though he knew his friend wouldn't hold it against him if he failed or looked stupid, but he didn't want to waist his time either. He figured he could base this training off of how he taught himself to climb but what if that didn't work out? He was feeling a little loss of confidence in his skills so having the chance to avoid the actual work after hyping it up was a chance he would try to take.

He couldn’t suppress a grin and a laugh, as Maxem promised to make sure any kids learned how to climb trees and caused problems. ”I don’t doubt it,” he murmured, finding himself excited at the thought of witnessing that. Even for himself, Hawk couldn’t wait to figure out how to play and go on adventures with kids. To do all of the things he’d done with his parents, and maybe more things he hadn’t.
He definitely had not anticipated that his friend would come to a complete halt and spin around at his next request, though. The ghost had to veer off suddenly to avoid crashing into the other, coming to rest just a few steps in front of a tree. He turned about quickly, arching a curious, though somewhat amused, brow.
”Finding flowers for Athena,” he answered after taking a couple of steps closer to the other again. ”I’d like to have something to give her, when I go to tell her how I feel. But this… stupid weather, is making them difficult to find.” It was not a very major problem in the grand scheme of things, he knew that. And it was also something he didn’t think Athena would hold against him, but even so. If they were talking about the future, and a possible lifetime together, he wanted to be able to give something to her, to commemorate the moment.

I know I always come and go Maxem was too excited to think twice about him almost causing his friend to come face first with a tree, he wanted to know all about his friends plan to woo the stoney Athena. He had never seen another male show interest in Athena so he was curious to see how this went and if he could help he would definitely be there.
"Flowers?" His ears pitched forward with curiosity. "I bet we could find some, they'll probably be a little crispy and brown, but..." his brows knitted together as he tried to gather the words in his head, "it's the thought that counts, that's what people say, right? I don't think anyone has gotten her flowers before so I bet you'd win her heart for sure." He grinned, tail swinging high in the air, he was ready to go on a hunt for flowers.

Flowers, Maxem inquired, sounding as though his interest had been piqued. Instantly, the kindly man volunteered his assistance with that task, too. The whole crispy and brown bit prompted the ghost to chuckle softly, although.. Hawk supposed that his friend was unfortunately probably right about that. And while Maxem was also correct about the statement that followed, that it was mostly the thought that counted, crispy and brown flowers were not something he wanted to give to Athena, if it could be avoided.
"That is what they say. And I'm sure you're right.. that she wouldn't hold it against me, considering. But I hope we can do better," Hawk spoke. He wasn't exactly wholly confident of that, but he was at least a little bit hopeful. After all, healers and herbalists back home had managed to preserve herbs and things. There had to be a few flowers left, somewhere. "Just need to keep our eyes open, there's.. no rush to find them. I still have to think about where and how I want to tell her.." the ghost added with a shrug and a small smile. With the aid of his friend, keeping his eyes open as well, they had a better chance at least of finding something.
"I really do owe you for this, too. If there's ever anything you want, or need.. my friend, just ask." Truly, Hawk was fortunate to have a friend like Maxem. The Vertok pack did seem to have its flaws, like anything.. but overall, it was a good place.

I know I always come and go Any missed confidence that Hawk had wasn't apparent to Maxem, his heart felt a swell of warmth and pride that his friend was so thoughtful, wanting to do the best for dear Athena. His mind was already racing along to the idea of collecting as many flowers as possible, looking at quantity instead of quality but he tried to reign himself in for his friends sake. "Well, just because you get her flowers doesn't mean you have to confess." He tried to soothe his friends worries. In his mind Hawk could just give Athena some flowers and then avoid any further complicated thoughts. Sometimes the brown brute was more simple in his thoughts on emotions, perhaps that's why he was still solitary. His thoughts were fleeting and often anything more detailed flew right over his head faster than an eagle.
Maxem was ready to charge into the forest for flowers when Hawk thanked him, making him pause. He wasn't used to someone actually caring about his wants or needs, he was always focused on being there for others than he forgot about himself or figure his needs weren't as important but as he was faced with this statement he felt unsure. "Don't worry, if something comes up then I'll ask, promise." He said with an easy smile, though in the back of his mind he had come to the conclusion that he would be alright, it wasn't like there was much going on in his life that required him to think about himself or his desires. "Now, where exactly do we find flowers?" Up until now his simple mind had thought that trapezing through the forest would provide them with what they wanted but now that he took a moment he wasn't too sure if there were any close by.

Maxem took the opportunity to make a suggestion that Hawk hadn't really considered, up until this point. Just because he was giving her flowers didn't mean he had to confess to anything more. Were he less sure of these feelings, the Knight might have latched on to that sentiment and considered it for a time, but in that moment, he found himself shaking his head. "But I want to. I think she deserves to know how I feel.. and to make her choice based on that." Although he wouldn't exactly be lying if he continued on and didn't say anything to Athena, it still felt dishonest. But he also didn't want to pass up the opportunity to offer their mutual friend a chance at something more.
Just like he wanted to offer to Maxem, but in a different sort of a way. The pawn promised to ask if something important that he needed help with ever did come up, and Hawk opted to let that go with a smile and a nod. The topic quickly went back to flowers, however.
"I would guess.. further into the forest, where it's shadier. But.. just, keep your eyes open, there's no rush. I'd still be interested in attempting a climbing lesson," he hadn't forgotten about that. Nor the little joke he hoped to spring upon Maxem, in so doing.

I know I always come and go Maxem was impressed by his friends dedication to admitting his feelings, he wished that he was strong enough in himself to do the same, but the idea of being honest and fighting back against those who spoke wrongly to him was terrifying. His mind jumped to the worst conclusion: that if he spoke up then he'd be bullied into leaving the pack and he didn't believe he could survive on his own. Running for more than a couple minutes left the boy winded and his stamina screaming for him to stop. "Well, good luck then, I think she'll fall head over paws for you though." He grinned, though he did worry about the possibility of Athena refusing and then...there went their friend group but if things did go well...what would that make him? Just a third wheel.
He nodded along as Hawk explained where to find flowers, gaze turning up towards the tree. "Well I guess you're in luck with me, I think we're about to have our first lesson...always look for trees that have low branches that are thick enough to hold you as you climb up and keep in mind the route for when you have to come down." He explained, his voice taking on a rare confidence as he spotted a tree with low hanging branches, trotting up to it and squared himself up to the branch. He carefully hopped onto his hind legs, reaching out and bracing his front paws on the branch and giving it a push with all his weight. It bent a little but not enough to cause concern. Maxem fell back onto all fours and backed up a bit before taking a running leap and landing on the branch and carefully he made his way up a few more branches like steps before stopping and peering out from the foliage, scanning the area for any kind of flowers. "Always test to branch so it doesn't break," he called down to Hawk then leaned forward, pointing to the right with his muzzle, "flowers over there! By the stump!" He told him, seeing a few petals poking out by a broken tree stump.

Maxem wished him good luck, but professed that he thought she’ll fall head over paws for you. Coming from anyone else, the ghost would’ve doubted that claim. But with what he did know about Maxem’s relationship with their mutual friend, Hawk was inclined to believe him. Or, at least to believe that there was a good chance that he was correct.
The knight returned the grin of his friend, although said expression faded a little, as he observed just how effortless Maxem made the whole scaling a tree branch thing look. ”That all sounds like good advice,” he admitted, impressed. Not one to be dissuaded, Hawk moved to tentatively follow his friend's example and advice, seeking a fallen tree wedged between some others, and then beginning to climb the branches that he believed were thick enough to hold him. From there, the ghost started to carefully, make his way up. He was not overly fond of how unsteady the tree limbs were under his paws, especially, as he carefully balanced and climbed higher. Despite being named after a bird, this Hawk quickly came to the conclusion that he preferred being on solid ground.
There was, however, a strange sort of excitement to be had, standing in a tree above the ground. He was not as high as Maxem, but to look down on the ground from this perspective was interesting. In the heart of summer, when trees were thick with leafy growth, a wolf could very easily perch themselves even just a few branches up, and most would probably not see them. He would have to try this more.
Maxem, however, had his focus elsewhere. Flowers, he said, by the stump. Hawk’s ears perked in interest, and he glanced toward where his friend had gestured. And sure enough, guarded there, were a few flowers. A smile worked it’s way across Hawk’s face, as that was a win - but it also presented the perfect opportunity.
”Oh, good eye! Let’s - ah!” Intentionally, the ghost misstepped, losing his balance and tripping himself off the branch. He twisted midair to land on his side to avoid any damage to his limbs, but even with that, the impact still was jarring and knocked his breath away for a moment, though, but it was nowhere near as bad as he was going to pretend it was.
Growling as though in pain, the ghost wriggled about on the ground for a moment. ”Ow.. oh, my leg. It hurts..” he whined. A very small part of him felt bad for probably scaring the other man like this, but given how rare it was for him to have the opportunity to pull a prank on someone, he wasn’t going to pass on it.

I know I always come and go Maxem glanced down as Hawk started to scale the tree, he was slow, but he was doing good for a beginner. The bark toned brute had to remind himself that climbing was a skill that took time and he had to be patient, even though that was something he struggled with daily. Even when scouting for the pack he would get anxious, wanting to leap in for the chase but knew better. He was never fast enough, always got exhausted too fast to even attempt to bite into a hide or trip up their prey. He just got in the way.
He was about to turn to plan his descent, ready to explain to his friend how to safely get down when there was a loud crush and a yell and with wide eyes Maxem was left staring as his ghostly companion just...vanished from the branches he stood on, reappearing on the forest floor with growls of pain. "Hawk!" Maxem's voice was panicked as he scrambled down the tree, leaping from the bottom branches and rushing to Hawks side. "Where? Dear God is something broken? I-I can get Athena!" He yelled, paws stamping at the ground nervously, he couldn't contain his panic as he threw himself in a circle, trying to gauge which way to go but his thoughts were a whirl of no help. Dear god Athena was going to kill him, the pack was going to kill him if Hawk came back injured because of him! He just believed that to be true but he couldn't run away and act like nothing happened, he had to get help!

Maxem was quick to descend from his perch amidst the trees, arriving at the side of the ghost in a full-on panic. That twinge of guilt was still there, and it grew at that moment. Hawk decided not to drag things out too long then, as his friend worriedly inquired as to whether something was broken. ”Yes, I think.. something might be broken,” he managed, allowing a wry grin to develop across his countenance at that.
”Your streak of managing to play jokes on me, that is,” the ghost continued, gathering his limbs beneath himself to sit up then, demonstrating that he was, in fact, alright. But, with how shaken his friend has seemed, the knight also did not want to leave it at just that. All of Maxem’s pranks had been innocent, not… something like this.
”And maybe my pride, too, a little bit, I don’t think I’ll ever be very good at climbing trees. So, maybe we can keep this between us?” He shrugged innocently, still grinning, but perhaps a little more apologetically now.
Thankfully, though, this lie was not something anyone could ever find out about. ”I didn’t mean to fall, but.. when I did, well. It was a good opportunity. I am sorry I scared you so much. ” Hawk offered, the apology genuine, even if the prior half was a lie. His fabrication of a rare lie did not feel good, but.. it seemed better than just blatantly admitting he’d done it all on purpose. That guilt, at putting his friend through such a scare, was why he didn’t usually try such things. It hadn’t been his intent, but still, considering how they had met, perhaps the prank might've been a little insensitive. But still, hopefully, Maxem would see it for what it had been meant to be.

I know I always come and go "Broken!" Maxem's voice came out in what could only be described as a mixture of a squeak and strangled cry as his panic took a harder hold on him. Dear God if something was broken who knew how long it would take to heal, what if it left Hawk with a limp or unable to continue on his rank? What if he just ruined his friend's entire life, what if---his thoughts came to a stop when his brain registered the next words Hawk had said as he stood, Maxem just staring at him as he came understood that this was some kind of joke, his mouth falling open as he continued to stare, relief pushing out the panic.
"You-you-you-" the words still struggled to leave his mouth, his brain still a jumble, "you got me good!" He shouted, starting to laugh, jumping in place again from paw to paw as Hawk showed him he was alright and asked to keep this all a secret.
"Oh, oh no, I am so telling Athena that you fell out of a tree and...and cried like a baby!" He wouldn't really lie like that but he liked jabbing back at Hawk though knew that if he told Athena he convinced Hawk to climb a tree and he had fallen out of it she would chide him for not being as careful as he should have been. "But really," he added, trying to calm himself down, "I really thought you were hurt and if I had to tell Athena you got hurt because of me, oh my God, I would be dead, but that was a good prank, you really got me! I didn't expect you to pull something like that, I'm impressed!"

The word broken seemed to elevate Maxem’s level of concern, at least, for a few moments. The look of surprise and realization that crossed his face afterward though, was nearly priceless. For two reasons. Because it was amusing, and relieving that the other now knew, and his worry was gone.
Thankfully, as well, there didn’t seem to be any hard feelings. Maxem professed that it had actually been good, but threw in a jab there too. Hawk tipped his head a moment, wry grin not fading. ”Do that.. and I’ll tell her you pushed me. Made me fall on purpose.” He offered up in return. Truthfully, he didn’t think he’d mind if Athena knew, but.. she was the only one. If Maxem did tell her it wouldn’t be an issue, for he doubted he’d need to worry about anyone else knowing.
It was.. in retrospect, good to know that the act had been so convincing, too. ”I have my moments, rare though they are. I do believe I’ll leave tree climbing to you, though,” the ghost spoke with a small nod. Hopefully, though, he could come up with some other things, in the future, albeit things that involved far less risk of injury or worry. Despite the shift in tone now, the knight didn’t ever want to see his friend worried like that again.
Recalling something Maxem had mentioned moments ago, prior to the prank, the ghost tipped his head. ”You’d.. said something about flowers, before? Where were they?” By a stump, Hawk thought he could recall.

I know I always come and go Maxem stopped when Hawk threatened to tell Athena that he had pushed him, a smile curling on his lips from the way his friend played along with his own false thread though the idea of Athena thinking that he had pushed Hawk or had any part in the fall terrified him for a minute. He had seen Athena angry before and it had made him extremely thankful for not being on the receiving end of that interaction. He was silent for a moment, as if he was weighing his outcomes before finally sighing. "Fine...you don't say anything and I won't say anything." He said with a nod as if that was that.
Maxem had to admit, he was a little disappointed that Hawk said he'd leave the tree climbing to him. Part of him had been hoping to have a friend to climb with but he understood, it didn't come naturally to everyone, really, it hadn't come naturally to anyone who had tried to copy him. It was a blessing and a curse, it gave him some use to the pack but it was another thing that made him feel further isolated. "Okay, your loss but I get it." He chuckled, not wanting to make it seem like a big deal to him and make his friend feel guilty.
"Oh!" Maxem had almost forgotten about the flowers, "this way!" He turned around, recalling the memory and bounding towards a tree stump, going around the side as his tail raised in the air as he found the clump of growing flowers, "here!"

Maxem seemed to acquiesce, at least for now. You don’t say anything, and I won’t, he offered. A compromise the ghost accepted with a wry grin and a nod. ”You got a deal,” he spoke. And though it seemed that would be the end of things, there was really no telling with Maxem.
Hawk was sure he’d get some kind of payback, someday, in the future. Maybe the not-so-distant future, even. Surprisingly though, he found himself anticipating it. This was more fun than he’d thought.
Thankfully too, on a more serious note, his friend also seemed to understand the reluctance the knight had when it came to climbing trees and let that subject rest. Especially now, when karma or something was probably going to be out to get him for playing this joke. Hawk supposed the next time he really might get hurt, and that was something he was sure they’d both rather not see. The ghost trailed his companion toward the flowers, examining the small cluster. Considering they’d managed to survive this drought relatively unscathed so far, he almost felt bad that he’d be back to take them at some point, but.. it was for a good cause. The best, actually. ”That’s a good start. Good eye, my friend. I’ll be back for these tonight.”
