Soralai So focused on the hunt, Sora merely turned and smiled at Duchess, who clearly didn't have a taste for the rhetorical. With one ear pressed down into the dirt and the other flicking the girl's way, Soralai paused. There. "Why don't you show me?""Gladly!" Sora chirped, and in a flash sprung her upper body into the air only to send her paws crashing back down on the tunnel with force. Her heart hammering and a healthy shot of adrenaline coursing through her veins, it was easy work from there to jolt forward and snatch at the neck of the groundhog who, in the destruction, bolted out of the rubble in terror. A fatal mistake, as it ran right into Soralai's waiting fangs. A quick crunch and it was all over. Soralai was heaving breaths, but she was beyond caring about appearances at the moment - it wasn't every day her hunts went so well! Fluffed up and proud, she held the creature up at Duchess to admire, tail wagging softly. With a thud the carcass landed limply at their paws. "Stubborn beast! It almost had me there, in the end," she said, still panting and feeling a little wild with her fur all rustled and caked in dirt, warm blood still staining her teeth. Duchess looked less so, but her legs were noticeably dark with dirt and Soralai suspected she wasn't so pleased about it. They both needed a good cleaning, Sora thought, and she noticed that her makeshift paw bandage had been lost long ago and the wound reopened, but all that could wait. All this trouble was for the girl after all, and she was dying to know her thoughts. "So, what do you think? Will that do?"Zawki

~ Duchess ~
Duchess had just started licking the dirt out between two toes when Soralai answered, causing her to lift her head just in time. She watched as Soralai took a massive leap, and couldn't help springing to her paws when the roof of the burrow gave way from the impact. Staring wide-eyed at the chaos, she barely had time to process everything until the prey was being presented to her. When she saw Soralai's tail wagging at the successful hunt, Duchess couldn't help smiling slightly. At last, they would be fed! "I really thought we'd lost it," she commented, considering how her hunting companion had turned the tides of the hunt. She had never thought about mimicking other animals' strategies before, yet she couldn't deny the fox pounce had helped them here. "So, what do you think? Will that do?" Soralai's words drew Duchess's attention to the prey that had since been dropped at their paws. She tilted her head at it, unsure about its odd appearance - she had never eaten prey of its kind before - but then the pain in her stomach reminded her just how hungry she was, causing her to give a hasty nod. "I'm so hungry, I could eat a whole flock of birds." Unable to wait any longer, she quickly lowered herself to the carcass and began tearing into the meat. She barely noticed the creature's unique flavour over her hunger as she took a few bites. After a moment, she closed her eyes and sighed. It would be a while before the hunger ebbed fully, but for the first time in a while, she was beginning to feel hopeful about the situation again. Looking back up at Soralai, she flicked an ear in acknowledgement. "Care to share?" She hadn't intended to share when she had first suggested the hunt, but after all Sora's hard work, she figured she deserved something. Razza

Soralai With Duchess giving her a small, pleased smile, Soralai could not help but return it tenfold. Even with the adrenaline starting to fade, Sora felt warm and content with the satisfaction of her success, her ears pressing back almost shyly, despite herself. "I really thought we'd lost it.""We very well could've," Soralai said, nodding reverently. Duchess really had tried her best, hadn't she, even if just for a moment? Sora liked to think so, though she was just grateful either way that it had all worked out in the end. The poor thing before her needed a meal, and who was Soralai if she could not provide? Watching as Duchess leaned over to get her fill, Soralai sat, picking up her paw. "I usually am not much of a hunter, but perhaps you, my dear, are my good luck charm," she continued, filling up the silence and inspecting her injury, if just for something to do. "That or the practice my 'friends' have forced upon me really has begun to pay off, after all."Soralai chuckled, mostly speaking to herself by now. While she was happy to let Duchess swallow the meal whole if it suited her, Soralai's stomach was an entity of it's own, and it seemed to have caught wind of her intentions. She was so busy ignoring it's cramping, that she almost missed Duchess looking back her way. "Care to share?" The girl asked, Soralai's eyes brightening up in surprise for the nth time since their meeting. "How sweet! Don't mind if I do." Soralai beamed and graciously reached for the creature, minding the bits that Duchess seemed to be preferring and tearing off a single leg for herself. Now she was quiet, happy to savor what she could of the kill. A voice in the back of her mind warned her that this may only awaken her appetite and make her more hungry, but Soralai ignored it in favor of the promise of instant gratification. She suspected Duchess was doing much the same, though it seemed like everyone was, these days. When she was done, she set about licking her chops clean and dusting off as much dirt as she could. Although to most this might seem like a natural point to part ways with a stranger, Soralai's mind was already cooking up a new idea as she watched Duchess with practiced subtlety. It would pain her too greatly to come across such an interesting character, only to have to let her go so soon. "So, Duchess. Now that we have a bit of food in us, how would you feel about accompanying me to a spot of shade to rest? I have to go collect something for this paw of mine, and I happen to know a place." Soralai sounded casual as could be even to her own ears, but secretly she hoped. It wasn't a lie, either. Soralai really did know somewhere they could go, - somewhere with a Mercurior store that truly may have something for her pain - and the promise of shade and trees and no more open spaces seemed enticing enough, at least to her. With luck Duchess felt the same. Zawki

It surprised Duchess when Soralai only took a small portion of the food. She had been willing to share more, but she did not complain, silently relieved to have more to fill herself with. Her companion's words were only now registering; she liked the idea of being a good luck charm. If the patterns continued, perhaps mentioning such things could work in her favour, if she could find the right wolf. For now though, she was happy with what Soralai could provide. She had proven herself to be a decent hunter here, regardless of what she said. It was a while before Duchess had finished picking as much off the carcass as she could. In her peripheral vision, she had seen Soralai cleaning up a little after her own meal, and she longed to do the same; she sat up as soon as she could and immediately began work on her dusty forelegs, only to be met with another question. "So, Duchess. Now that we have a bit of food in us, how would you feel about accompanying me to a spot of shade to rest? I have to go collect something for this paw of mine, and I happen to know a place." It was quite the tempting invitation. Duchess knew she could clean more thoroughly once they got there, and the mention of shade reminded her just how draining the sweltering heat could be. She got to her paws. "That sounds like just what I need." She glanced around, wondering if she could see the place Soralai had in mind, only to turn back to her after a moment. "Lead the way," she invited. Duchess had to trust the other wolf knew the land better than she did. Thanks to the drought scorching everything in sight, everywhere looked the same to her. Razza

Soralai Relaxing into the companionable silence, Soralai was happy to listen to the sounds of Duchess eating and the dry rustle of grass around them while her heartrate slowed back to a normal pace. Only after her proposal, when Duchess lept to her half-manicured paws, was the reverie broken. Soralai stood as well, gently shaking out some of the tangles in her fur and eagerly awaiting her reply. "That sounds like just what I need."Sora wondered if her relief showed in her smile. "Come, this way," she said, humor coloring her words after watching Duchess look this way and that like an alert little squirrel. Sparing a glance down at the mangled scraps of their meal, she quickly decided it wasn't worth taking and set off in a limping trot in the opposite direction she'd originally appeared from - south, towards the forest, where there was plenty of shade to spare. She glanced back to make sure Duchess was following, and knowing that they had several minutes of travelling ahead, Soralai figured now was the perfect time to pry a little deeper into, well, Duchess. She recalled what they had been talking about before the hunt, and cleared her throat gently. "So, my dear," Soralai started, making sure to keep pace with the taller girl. "Earlier you mentioned that your homeland was... boring, I believe was the word. I'm curious what makes you think such a thing." Soralai tilted her head inquisitively and kept a keen eye on Duchess' expression. "Do you come from somewhere very far away?"Zawki

~ Duchess ~
Padding along after Soralai, Duchess could feel a little more spring in her step. The promise of shade after the much-needed meal had her feeling more energised than she had in days, if not physically, then mentally. She watched as Soralai led the way; her temporary companion was easy to get along with, too. If she could find enough wolves like her in this new land, and the drought eventually ceased its onslaught of heat, she could see herself liking it here. She was lost in thought when Soralai spoke, suddenly drawing her attention. The autumnal wolf was asking about her homeland. Duchess froze for a moment, an uncertain smile on her face. She hadn't thought she would have to elaborate on her carefully-selected story. Shifting the weight between her forepaws, she tried to think up something to say whilst trying to make her awkward behaviour appear as impatience. She padded in a quick circle, then dropped into a stretch. "Oh, you know, there was just nothing to do." Standing up straight again after a moment, she added, "It was beautiful, sure, but even that gets boring. Everyone was always fighting or hunting, and neither really appeal to me." Lying about the real reason for leaving was easier now that there was some truth to back up her story. "I guess I just needed a change of pace," she concluded. She tried to look Soralai right in the eyes, guessing she would be the type to understand wanting adventure. If so, then with any luck, she would believe the story just the way it had been told. Soralai Soralai trotted along, and for a moment wondered if Duchess wasn't going to reply. She'd froze with a wary expression on her face, Soralai having to backtrack a few paces to keep in line with the girl, who almost seemed... annoyed, or impatient with what Sora had thought would be a perfectly safe place to begin her questioning. Perhaps she should've felt bad for prying, but all Soralai could feel was more curious. Duchess paced about a bit and then bowed down into a stretch, to which Soralai quirked a brow. "It was beautiful, sure, but even that gets boring. Everyone was always fighting or hunting, and neither really appeal to me."Soralai hummed. "Monotony can chip away at one's sanity, that I can certainly understand," she said, smiling as Duchess met her eyes once more. More than most, perhaps. "Though if you're hoping to avoid hunting and fighting, my dear, I may have some bad news. They're everywhere. Two pillars of many that make up the foundation on which our species is built." Soralai gestured for the two of them to start walking again with a smile, her ear twitching in thought. More than just particular or high maintence, Duchess was... naive, wasn't she? Not that there was anything wrong with that, but she couldn't help but worry about the fate of this girl, if she really did hope to make it out here on her own. Not everyone was as eager to help as Sora, or even the Mercurior, and in fact most were indeed quite the opposite, and would clock Duchess like a sitting duck. Something Soralai herself had learned from experience. "Especially for those like you and I who go through life largely on our own, wandering without the protection of a group. What would you have done if I had been someone else, hm? And say, attacked you, back at the flowers?" She had not seen the conversation going this way, and hadn't meant to get stern, but Soralai couldn't help herself, gentle concern evident on her face. Zawki

~ Duchess ~
For a moment, Duchess was beginning to regret her acting; the hunger may have ended, but now it just felt uncomfortable to move too much. Like her food may very well see the light of day again, if she kept it up. Duchess frowned. She should be relaxing in the shade, taking it easy, not standing around chatting. Still, she listened to what Soralai had to say. She was relieved when the other wolf decided to continue the conversation on the go. 'At last,' she thought. Now they would quit wasting time. Duchess thought about what Soralai said, about hunting and fighting. She didn't like what she was saying, but perhaps there was a way to twist it in her favour. "If you had tried to attack me, I could have escaped to safety," she insisted. Unsure how to convince Soralai, her gaze drifted over the wolf until she added, "My legs are longer than yours. I could easily outrun you." She knew she hadn't been in the best state, but that wasn't her point. It was just a small slip up of circumstances, and she was confident it wouldn't happen again. It was just the stupid drought catching her off guard, or so she told herself. "You say things like that are the foundation of our species. Isn't that why packs exist? So that each wolf can focus on what they do best, instead of trying to be good at everything?" Duchess thought for a moment. "Maybe I should join a pack." She didn't intend to, but at least it was something to consider, and more importantly, maybe the idea would get Soralai off her back. She sure hoped it would; she was tired of talking about what she couldn't do, when they could be focusing on her qualities instead. Razza

Soralai An odd look passed over Duchess' face, and in an instant Soralai worried she was making her companion uncomfortable - she could see it like a cloud forming above the girl, casting darkness over her expression and making her edgy to escape it's shadow. The spy took absolutely no pleasure in the thought, but said nothing to stop Duchess from answering her question regardless. "If you had tried to attack me, I could have escaped to safety. My legs are longer than yours. I could easily outrun you."If Duchess could have read Soralai's thoughts, she would've heard a very long and defeated sigh. It was Sora's fault, for not being clear. She accepted the defeat. "You probably have me there," Soralai conceded, feeling Duchess taking visual stock of her as they trotted along. She looked back at the girl, for a moment her expression unreadable, but just as quickly melting away back into a pleasant, easy smile. No matter. Her brow softened apologetically. "You'll have to forgive me, darling. I don't mean to nag but, you remind me a bit of myself when I first set out on my own, and I only worry." Sora kept her steps light, turning away for just a moment to check to make sure they were still on the right path. Slowly recognizing where they were, she readjusted their trajectory as Duchess' voice rang out again, bringing up the topic of packs. "Oh, certainly so. But you and I are proof that one is not always guaranteed the comforts of a pack, are we not? You never know when you will find yourself alone." Soralai tilted her head, turning to watch Duchess think. "Maybe I should join a pack."Yes, maybe you should. But she wouldn't say that outright, not yet. No one ever liked strangers telling them what they should do, no matter how informed their judgement. She pocketed the comment for later. "Hmm. If you did, what role would you take?" She asked instead. Sora's smile turned up at the corners then, humor coloring her next words. "Hunter and warrior are out of the question, I take it."Zawki

~ Duchess ~
Duchess gave a small, smug smile when Soralai admitted she had a point. "There's no need to worry about me," she assured. "I can handle myself just fine, especially now that I know not to underestimate this heat." She padded along with new confidence in her step, satisfied that Soralai had been mostly convinced. Hopefully she would stop questioning her capability now. When her companion asked what role she would take in a pack, Duchess sped up until she was padding alongside Soralai. She couldn't help but smile at her comment. Although she hadn't thought so far ahead, the answer came easily to her. "Those are definitely out of the question! But, I think I would make a decent pack leader." Duchess looked Soralai's way, her eyes expectant yet vaguely excited, as if she expected her to agree. "I am good at managing things, after all." Bounding ahead a little, she turned and added, "I could tell everyone what role fits them best, and what to do. In return for my guidance, they can bring me food, and defend the borders of our territory." She allowed herself to fall back into step beside the autumnal wolf before continuing. "I would choose a beautiful territory, and allow visitors, should they be willing to share their resources. I could even offer advice for all their problems, at the cost of a simple favour."She hadn't intended for her idea to go so far, but she was really starting to like it. What better way to forge a reputation? Yet running a pack sounded like hard work. Duchess thought for a moment. Maybe she wouldn't even need a pack for such benefits, if she did everything right. Still, she decided to push the thought away for later; first, she wanted to hear Soralai's opinion. Razza
