The world it turns no matter what Milo squirmed at having to talk about the Au'Dar, it made his stomach role with bile that wanted to escape, but he choked it down. He pointed his gaze ahead, eyes focused on the trees. "The Au'Dar put on a front of being kind," he muttered, more to himself, "at least the Sanzin make their evil forthright, so you have a point."
At her question the large mans gaze flickered down to the other with a smile, though there was a slight sadness that pulled it down. "I should have expected that question. I'm not in the mountains yet," he made sure to emphasized the word yet, "I've been in search of water, like everyone else, and unfortunately that brought me down this way." He wasn't exactly speaking a lie, he was in search of water, but also he still felt a connection to this land and no matter how far he tried to get away his paws brought him back in risk of being caught. Maybe that's what he wanted deep down, to be caught and killed. What a poetic end but yet he wasn't that lucky. "But maybe death is calling me." He joked, trying to bring himself back to a positive mindset.
"They're just birds," he chuckled then playfully lowered his voice, "but between you and me that bird always look like that." He shook out his fur, some dust falling away and with it were those depressing thoughts. He brushed them away and trotted along, though he pulled away from her rear, walking at her side. "But as long as the bird doesn't try to swoop down and peck you then you'll be fine." He teased her.

Eris Milo seemed happy to field her questions, but something in his voice made Eris wearily glance over her shoulder. Sorrow and stoicism fought in his expression, and Eris knew at once that there must be a deep-rooted history behind the easy answers he gave her - but then again, of course there was. Anyone that stayed in one place for long would gather ties to the land, and though Eris could respect that truth, those things that anchored him here and clouded his feelings were of no use to either of them right now. She set her mouth in a firm line and looked away. "Today is not your day to die, Milo. And apparently not mine, either," she stated. Now that they'd walked a bit her legs had started to adjust again, in spite of their burning ache, Eris' resilience was replenishing. Feeling no need to look Milo's way again, she kept her eyes on a swivel, taking in the lay of the land as it moved slowly by. This place was a breeding ground for claustrophobia, she silently cursed. "They're just birds, but between you and me that bird always look like that," Milo chuckled kindly, and Eris was certain that the feathered beasts started to calm down. "But as long as the bird doesn't try to swoop down and peck you then you'll be fine." She almost pouted. Normally she loved birds, their songs the calming melody behind many good, early-morning memories, but perhaps these ones had been corrupted by this place. "Just birds, right," she grumbled, clearly unconvinced. The flock swarmed forward again, Eris admiring their colorful feathers catch on patches of sunlight. The sound was the only disturbance in an otherwise calm and quiet forest, aside from Milo's heavy steps and her own, less steady ones. She had trouble imagining such a forcible pack living nearby, which only convinced her further that Milo's criticisms were valid. Eris fell quiet again, unbothered by the lull in conversation as she continued to lead them forward, thinking to herself, and taking small cues from Milo as he pushed them past trees and over uneven ground. With her back turned to him, she remained unreadable. Bri

The world it turns no matter what The breath he hadn't realized he had been holding slipped out when she dropped out the subject. It seemed, like Eris had said, today was not the day for their demise, of course life would be playing a cruel joke like this. Though of course Milo would want Eris to survive while he got to experience the sweet release of death.
He frowned at the thought, he had to stop. Now wasn't the time to be depressed. As much as he punished himself he couldn't go out the easy way, his path was suffering, to atone for his sins.
Milo glanced at Eris and laughed a little. "What? Do you think they're all going to swarm you or something?" He joked, finding it unlikely that someone as hard headed as she seemed would be unnerved by the sparrows, robins, and finches above.
As they walked he scented the air, thankfully the smells of his previous pack were fading, he allowed himself to walk at a more relaxed pace-which allowed him to sneak a few more glances at his companion. "Now that you've asked me questions I think I get to ask some too," he said, "like where did you come from and how did you end up here?" He asked, as dedicated as he had been to the Au'Dar he had always wondered what else was out there, he couldn't pass up the chance to learn about the outside world that he hadn't experienced yet.

Eris Eris felt a prickling in her cheek, like Milo was looking at her as he laughed. "What? Do you think they're all going to swarm you or something?" She turned her head away further, teeth clenched, forced to watch as her view of the open forest was obscured by a thread of dull, dying bushes that trailed off as far as she could see. The path below her was morphing into more jagged ground as the bushes became more obstructive, but Milo's guidance kept her going straight, and annoying as he was she still had to trust in him to get her somewhere. The sad truth was that the twisting, aching paranoia in her gut had nothing to do with birds at all, and it'd been growing within her long before today. Milo fell into silence too, and Eris tried to enjoy it for the brief moment it lasted. "Now that you've asked me questions I think I get to ask some too, like where did you come from and how did you end up here?""Neither of those things matter right now," Eris said, and she decided she'd had enough, now. What stupid... stupid questions. She turned to him sharply, egged on by that soft, calm face. "Can't you just shut up and let us walk in silenc--"Her words were cut off by a gasp seizing her lungs. Eris hadn't realized it, but in an unconscious, defensive maneuver she'd stepped back, toward the wall of dead bushes. But where the ground was supposed to be, her paw was instead met with nothingness. "GAH-"Her weak body twisted awkwardly and in an instant she was falling. It wasn't a long fall, body limply hitting the ground almost immediately, but her limbs had gotten tangled in the branches and the blurred colors of Milo slipping out of sight danced dizzyingly behind her eyelids. Groaning, she pried her eyes open, trying to orient herself. Those bushes had been concealing the drop off, and Eris expressed her displeasure with a series of loud curses. In her current state, she was going to need help getting out of this. "Shit-- Milo?" She called, all the venom from her voice evaporated. Eris peeked at the outside world through an opening in the foliage, trying to gather her wits. The air smelled... different here. Wetter. But not wet enough. Eris didn't trust her eyes for a second when she thought she saw the dark, damp soil of a recently dried stream at the base of the ditch. She blinked once and gave up struggling, looking up again. Milo. Dammit, she should've been kinder to him-- he'd helped her so much already, and here she was again. And all she'd been so far was rude. "Shit."Bri

The world it turns no matter what Oh, he had spoken too much, the edge to her voice and the cut of her eyes made him realize this, as always he had stuck the proverbial paw in his mouth, making him look like an idiot. He cast his gaze downward when she told him to shut up, to be silent. Why did he always have to babble? Maybe being on his own so long was taking a toll on him, but it wasn't like the wilds offered many opportunities for him to be friendly with his own kind. He wanted to apologize to her, he lifted his head to speak when all of a sudden she was gone with a scream.
The large mans ears pitched forward, hearing the thuds of a body hitting brush and earth, farther away from him. Without a second though he hurried to the place she had fallen, poking his head through the brush to see Eris sprawled out in what appeared to be what was once a stream, though any lingering water was gone into the mud.
For a moment he just stared at her, noting how her voice changed, now it looked like she needed him. For a moment a voice in the back of his mind told him to leave her. He had been nothing but kind to the dame and in return she had pushed him away, snapping at him to be silent, if she was so determined to be mean to him then why should he continue to be nice? He could easily turn and run away from her, leave her to her own devices, she was a big girl, why did she need him?
No, he was better than that. "Hold on, I'm coming." He looked down at the ditch, it was going to be a little tricky to get his massive frame down the side but he had to try. Tentatively he climbed down, his claws digging into the sides of the embankment, sliding and almost losing his balance though straightened out his front legs, keeping them stiff but ultimately his own weight threw him forward as rocks gave way, sending him tumbling down head over heels. His fall wasn't as long or hard as Eris due to being half way down the embankment but it still knocked the air from his lungs with every hard thud until finally he stopped a few feet away from the other wolf.
"Ouch." He groaned, nostrils flaring as he took in air, though his chest burned and back ached. "Screw you rocks." He muttered, regaining his strength he rolled onto his side, pushing himself up and took steps closer to Eris, tilting his head. "Need help?"

Eris
Eris watched as Milo loomed over her, temporarily blocking out the light and casting both their faces into darkness. He was hesitating, she could tell. And who could blame him? A second, sharper pang of regret hit her, and bizarrely she kind of felt like laughing. This world really was turning her into a monster, huh? But it hadn't yet sunken it's claws into him. Not yet. "Hold on, I'm coming." She watched helplessly as he tumbled down the ledge from her place within the thicket, wincing at the sharp thud of his body hitting the dirt. Eris grunted sympathetically, attempting to untangle her legs from the branches as quickly as she could. "Are you okay?" she asked out of instinct, glancing over to Milo, who was already on his feet and walking over to her. Even to her own ears it was obviously the most genuine she'd sounded since they'd met. She frowned and looked him over. At his offer for help, she merely nodded. The fall must've knocked some of her ego out too as well as her breath, because she was feeling very silly right about now. With some effort she pulled herself upright as far as she could and then silently awaited Milo's help, avoiding his eyes as much as possible. In the process she got a good look at the gully around them. "So uh... I'm guessing this used to lead toward that lake you mentioned earlier?" Eris swallowed. What she needed to say right now was thank you, but the words hung heavily in her mouth like cotton. Bri

The world it turns no matter what "Yup, perfectly fine." Milo lied, feeling a knot of pain in his side but choosing to ignore it. This wasn't about him. "Besides, shouldn't I be asking you that instead?" He asked with a cautious smile, unsure of how she could react, he was surprised she even asked if he was okay in the first place, but he wasn't going to question her and invoke her wrath again.
The brute stepped over the rocks that felt smooth under his paw pads to Eris's side, leaning down and grabbing the branches in his mouth, pulling them away from her one by one, trying to be careful not to pull on her long limbs, which was harder than he had expected. "Sorry if I hurt you." He said as he set a branch to the side, scrunching his nose up from the taste but tried to not let it bother him, she needed his help.
"Yeah, supposed to." He said with a sigh, glancing down the tried up river bank and wondered if it could still lead them to water. He doubted it would be a lake but it hopefully it was better than nothing. "You didn't break anything did you?" He asked her, pulling the final branch away.

ERIS
Milo said he was fine, and Eris chose to believe him. "Besides, shouldn't I be asking you that instead?" She shook her head no, almost to herself, not meeting his eyes. No, he shouldn't be asking her that, and no, she wasn't okay. "I'm fine too." With Milo's help her limbs were freed, and Eris was able to drag herself back onto her paws. She was brushing debris off her legs when he spoke up again, licking the taste of dead bark out of his mouth. "Sorry if I hurt you."
Eris stared at him. Looked into his eyes and tried to decide if she should cry or laugh hysterically again. He sighed and looked at the dried creek bed hopelessly, but she didn't stop looking for a long time. "You didn't break anything did you?" Shaking her head, she stepped out of the bush. She was able to get a good long look at where they were now: the dark, barren trench where water once ran and the still-damp smelling air, in spite of it's dryness. Eris stood next to Milo, staring at it. "I'm the one who's sorry," she said out of nowhere.
"I come from somewhere far away, where I'm not welcome anymore. This is the first time I've been on my own." She swallowed around her dry throat, face turned to Milo but still looking ahead. "I was a warrior. Arguably the best. None of this should've happened, but no matter what I do I just keep... failing."
Eris exhaled. It wasn't the apology Milo deserved, but she hoped he would understand her. Understand that she couldn't talk about her past and couldn't open up to him, not because she didn't want to or he didn't deserve it, but because of who she was. Who she'd always been. "None of this is your fault. I shouldn't have snapped at you. "
She took a few careful steps towards the former creek and trailed her eyes down it's length. A long, difficult, unfamiliar road. Eris turned around, trying to gather her wits to show him she was okay again. That confession was his now, not hers. He could do with the words whatever he pleased. "Should we see if it still leads there then? If we both truly are fine." She watched him closely, decidedly, glancing at the side he'd landed on. Milo could turn around now and she wouldn't stop him, but if he chose one last time to follow her, she would give up the fight. "Even if there's nothing there, maybe we'll find a place to rest and pretend this day never happened." She shifted her weight and breathed out through her nose - her attempt at a laugh. Bri

The world it turns no matter what "Good, I'm sure you wouldn't want me to carry you around again." Milo teased her, though there was something about how she couldn't bring her eyes to meet his that put a sense of unease in his chest. He turned his gaze away when hers snapped too him, hoping she didn't think he was staring at her for any reason other than worry.
He was taken by surprise at her apologies, eyebrows raising but he bit back any jokes, letting her push ahead and as he told him of herself he found himself staring at someone whose life mirrored his own. They weren't exactly the same but there were many similarities, though he wasn't so quick to talk about himself, his shame to heavy for him to dislodge though after her admittance he felt that he had to at least give up something. "I...used to be a warrior as well, believe it or not," he said with a wry smile, "back then I was younger, thinner, much more agile but none of that mattered when I made a mistake that was unforgiveable in the eyes of my pack. I've been alone for a very long time except for the birds." He told her though hoped she wouldn't ask any more questions. "I accept your apology, I won't hold it against you." He stepped to her side, gently brushing his shoulder against hers, careful not to knock into her. Feeling what used to be the bottom of a river made his heart sick, he wondered how long this was going to last. It all felt so...unnatural.
"We might as well see if it leads to anything, maybe we'll get lucky and find a puddle." He half smiled, looking at her with a light dancing in his eyes. "I certainly feel fine enough to trudge on and if you feel faint, I'll be there to catch you." His smile turned to a grin, though he was ready for her to snap at him for his quips. He wondered briefly if the moment they decided to lay down and rest that she would sneak away from him, he had a feeling that she may not want him as a companion, which he would understand. He was used to being alone but would think fondly of their random interaction.

Eris Having been humbled, Milo's jest only made Eris pout. It was minute, and she didn't even realize it was happening, all too focused on keeping her sights on anywhere but him. Nevermind that being carried probably would've sounded nice right about now, if all her pride were to magically expel itself from her very DNA. Although not damp, the dirt here was darker, and with an experimental step forward Eris blinked, feeling the pleasant softness of it beneath her paw. She wasn't expecting Milo to respond to her apology beyond maybe a polite acceptance. Looking over at him again, she stayed put until he was done. "I've underestimated you, then," she admitted. Milo's smile, although made gentle by his features alone, seemed to betray some sort of quiet bitterness. She understood it all too well. So then they were more alike than she would have ever guessed... and to think, if someone saw them now. Two strangers in some dry, nasty ditch, homeless and driven to opposite extremes, mere shadows of their former selves. "But I can see it now. The warrior look about you. What I mistook for foolishness earlier... no. Only someone who knows how to defend themselves would so boldly get into an unconscious woman's face." Her words were bone dry, but her look at him had softened. Eris had softened. She regretted beind so cruel before, but could not promise it wouldn't happen again. "I accept your apology, I won't hold it against you.""Then you, Milo, are a kinder man than your old pack deserves. Whatever it is you did." She watched then, wide-eyed, as he stepped to her side and brushed against her shoulder. Eris could not help but bristle, but she didn't snarl at him and the grimace she made was only slightly toothy. Experimentally, she even tried to lean back into him. His soft fur uncomfortably warm against her, and yet it made her heart clench with something that wasn't unpleasant. How long had it been, since someone had dared to show her the kind of kindness Milo had. He didn't even know the gravity of his actions. Fool, she insulted him, in her mind for only her to hear. Kind fool. Thank you.The moment was broken by Milo suggesting they move on, grinning dopily and assuring her, again, that he'd catch her. Eris huffed and rolled her eyes, using his sturdy frame to launch herself into a walk. "You know, I'm starting to suspect you want to carry me," she tutted, following the path the stream had left behind for them; a fresh scar through the forest, not nearly as healed as the ones Eris carried. Maybe Milo had a few of his own. "I'm much heavier than I look, you know. And you fed me berries. How will I ever harden back up to full health if you keep spoiling me like this?" With her back turned to him Eris cracked a private smile. Perhaps the rest of their journey wouldn't be so bad. Bri

The world it turns no matter what Milo shrugged when she admitted to underestimating him, in his opinion there wasn't a lot about there was to worry about anymore. Gone was the fire and arrogance that made him leap into fights and flaunt his strength, now all replaced with humor to cope. "Don't be fooled, there is a lot of foolishness within me." He said with a small smile, casting her glance, "but none the less it all worked out in the end I think."
At talk of his back felt something harden deep in his chest, the weight making it hard to breathe. "My old pack doesn't know who I am now, only who I was and all I can do is try to be better." His voice was thoughtful but internally the guilt was laying heavy in his bones. He eyed her from the side when their fur touched, ready for her to snap at him, not that he would judge from their situation, he was just ready but what he wasn't ready for was how she used himself like a spring board to get moment for her own walk, the ploy making him smile from her cleverness.
"Oh ho ho, you've caught me," his voice picked up with a teasing tone as he tried to ignore the shadow following his existence, "maybe I want to show off by carrying you across the land despite how heavy you claim to be, berries and all." He teased, picking up the pace to catch up with her, a large grin stretching across his mouth.

Eris So Milo wanted to be better; to move on. To take all this pain and let it fertilize the seeds of growth, somehow. Eris could not comprehend where he would even start. The last few months of her life, she'd spent in the mindset that she was now in "the end". That everything she held dear was gone, her favorite people now ghosts, the story over. All that was left for her was the prologue, and it was ruinous, and it was cold, and she could see no end no matter how long she searched. All she wanted was for it to be over. "My old pack doesn't know who I am now, only who I was and all I can do is try to be better."No, that's not all you can do, she wanted to say, but bit her tongue. It was too soon for Eris to tell the depths of it, but nobody lived the kind of life her and Milo did without carrying within them a darkness. Maybe his darkness just wasn't as bottomless as hers. Maybe it was, but he just wouldn't let her, or perhaps himself, confront it. Perhaps he already had, and had been strong enough to turn away from it in a way Eris was not. All this uncertainty sobered her. She watched Milo react happily to her teasing, something in her eyes far away, though she stayed light. She felt light. "Show off to who, exactly? Your bird friends?" Milo trotted up to her side, big paws thumping against the dirt and Eris imagined the vibrations rattling her bones. "Good luck with that, they're a tough crowd." Above the pair they twittered, and Eris found herself hoping they would follow. Bri
