Athena
Thoughts| "Spoken Word | Outside Speech | Molo
Considering their potential trip to the ocean Athena wondered if Maxem would want to go. He was always looking for an excuse to avoid what responsibility he had, but...would three be a crowd? She didn't have much time to further continue this thoughts as the thrilling thought of water came to the front of her mind. When Hawk confirmed that she wasn't hallucinating the sound she perked up, maybe their trip wouldn't be so far out of reach after all.
"We did." She agreed, eyes scanning the wall as faint water traced down along it's ridged surface. Part of her felt disappointed. This was nothing close to what the pack would need. Ears falling back she continued to survey the scene, gaze tracing the tunnel the water slipped into. It would be impossible to follow and discouragement slapped her in the face. "But...not the amount we need." She said quietly, too consumed with the idea of failure to truly see any positivity in this discovery. "What do we do now?" She asked as a picture crossed her mind of them telling the pack and multiple wolves flooding the caves only to get loser-or worse, killed in some kind of accident with nothing to show for it. She also saw pack mates coming to the same devastating conclusion that they had: there was water somewhere in the mountain but if it was accessible...that seemed less likely. Their claws couldn't break the stone surrounding them.
"Our King and Queen are gone for a meeting," she said, thinking of Conri and Reika, her stomach rolling with nerves as she thought of them meeting with the slimy Sanzin and the mysterious Au'dar, though rules stood in place for safety, she didn't think their rivals would follow in such a desperate time, "if we mention this too soon it could cause a riot." She added, voice quiet as she tried to come up with some feasible option that didn't end up in the loss of lives.
But you see, it's not me, it's not my family In your head, in your head, they are fightin'

Athena had also taken to examining the water as well, her eyes scanning the path it took as he had done. There was one thing Hawk noted about her words though, they seemed to be lacking any excitement or enthusiasm. Even if the tunnel was too narrow to follow the small stream of water down to.. wherever it flowed, and even if it was nowhere near enough to cover probably even the needs of the two of them, this was still good news.
Her third question was the more troubling one, and prompted the ghost to take some time to think it over. Athena’s concerns about the King and Queen were valid, along with worrying about starting a panic. He could see the wolves of the Vertok flooding into the caves in search of the water, only to have something horrific happen. Worse yet, would be if rumors were to get out to the other packs.
But this did not overshadow the optimism he felt. ”It is not enough, but this water proves we were right. It has to go somewhere. And maybe.. wherever it goes, will have enough for all of us. We just have to keep looking.” The ghost spoke, his resolution and will to do exactly that stronger now than it had before. He believed there was very good reason to be hopeful.
”As for what we do, I think first, we turn back for now and rest.” Something Athena had been looking forward to this whole time, and now, the ghost was starting to agree. A break sounded nice. ”I.. don’t think we should tell anyone about this, yet, though, until we’ve rested, and perhaps looked more." The less wolves they had storming the caves looking for a path to water that might not even be there, the better. "We probably should not delay for too long, in telling our King and Queen, though. I believe it is our duty to inform them of this soon, in case they feel differently.” If he were in their position, Hawk supposed he would have wanted to know too. It would undermine their King and Queen, and possibly create distrust if he and Athena were to keep silent about a discovery as potentially vital as this. They were the ultimate authority as it came to these things, and no matter his thoughts, whatever judgement they were to pass, the ghost would accept it.

But you see, it's not me Hawks words were able to make her feel a little more positive. She looked over at him, wanting to lean against him for support from her disheartened though, but she thought better of it. She had to be strong. She took a deep breath, steadying herself and straightening her legs. "You have a point." She admitted. "This is a good sign, there has to be more somewhere in this place." Though she had to admit that this was good news, she started to feel worried about the potential of him suggesting that they continue their excursion into the caves, the darkness was starting to get to her and the condensation pulled at her fur, almost weighing her down. But thankfully Hawk had a different idea.
The ashen woman listened and nodded along. "I agree, with resting and not telling anyone else until we know more." She said, already turning around in the tunnel, eager for fresh air and sunlight. "It is our duty to tell them, but I'm not sure how long it will be until their back from their meeting." She said, though she was a bit worried, she had faith in their Queen and King in coming back, but what if something happened? She always thought of the worst case scenarios, but she had to be prepared for anything. Not being prepared is what almost ended up making her lose her life. She sighed softly. "To be frank, I'm ready to get out of here."

He had a point Athena admitted, and he did not doubt that she meant it.. but, there did not seem to be much heart in the words. It once more made him appreciative of the fact that his fellow Knight had agreed to accompany him on this expedition, despite the fact that she clearly despised the caves. ”And if there is, I’ll find it. I won’t quit until I do,” the ghost promised both himself and his companion. Hawk owed that much to this pack, he thought. He promised himself there and then that he would not ask her to go with him again. The Knight did not like seeing his packmate like this, and if he could avoid making Athena go through this again by venturing alone, he would. But he would not reject her help if she were to offer it, either.
Athena agreed with the second portion of the plan, too, though she too brought up a good point. They didn’t know how long it would take before their King and Queen were back from these meetings - or just how busy they would be in the meantime. ”That’s true, too. Who knows how long it’ll be before we get the chance to tell them,” he spoke with a bit of a frown, though he chose not to dwell on the topic, instead turning about as his company voiced her readiness to leave behind the caves.
He was, too, though it hadn’t been all that unpleasant. It had been nice to get out of the dry heat, for a while. ”Lead on, then, I’ll be right behind you. And.. thank you, too, for coming with me. I truly appreciate it, Miss Athena.” Hawk murmured, gently touching his nose to her shoulder. That did not even begin to express the gratitude he felt, but it was something, to start.

But you see, it's not me Athena looked over at Hawk when he said he wouldn't quit and for a moment she got worried. What if this quest consumed him? What if one day an accident happen and...and he got hurt...or worse? Worry creased her brow as she looked at him, though part of her wondered why she felt this way about him. They barely knew each other and yet she had a vast amount of trust him and wanted to see nothing befall this man that she trusted to follow into these caves. "Just don't wear yourself out," she countered and lightly butted his shoulder with her head, "we don't need you getting sick or getting hurt out here." She added.
"And who knows what our King and Queen will have to tell us, if anything," the dame mused, though the touch of his nose against her shoulder brought her from her worrisome thoughts.
Something in his touch and his words brought a lightness to her chest and she smiled a little. "You can just call me Athena, no need for formality between friends...unless you would like for me to call you Mr. Hawk?" She gave him a teasing smile before turning around and making her way out of the caves, eager to see sunlight once again.

Just don’t wear yourself out, the other spoke. They certainly didn’t need him getting hurt or sick in these caves. It would have been a lie if he’d said the mere thought of it did not frighten him, at least a little. Athena sounded genuinely concerned, and that was a feeling the ghost also hoped to ease. ”I won’t. I know my limits,” he spoke softly, which was true, even if he didn’t like to admit that aloud.
”I wouldn’t want to give you another patient to deal with. And I don’t want to jeopardize our trip, either.” the ghost added on a lighter note, a soft huff of laughter escaping him. Hawk was particularly looking forward to that, too. The thought of spending time not worrying about pack things was.. very appealing. Even more so with Athena.
She was right again, though, about their leaders. With any luck, maybe a solution would already be worked out. Or at the very least.. ”I’ll take nothing, over something bad,” the ghost murmured. A part of him wished he could’ve been there, to meet with these other packs and learn of their values, himself. But that wasn’t his place.
”Mister Hawk. I like that,” the knight teased back lightly, moving to trail after his companion, happy as well to be leaving behind the caves. ”It isn’t strictly a formality, though. It is also gratitude and respect.” And that was something he liked to express to his friends as often as he could. That they were appreciated and respected.

But you see, it's not me Athena laughed a little, shaking her head. She didn't mind playing the role of Bishop to her friends, though she wasn't sure what the actual Bishops thought of her taking some of her clients, though part of her, the selfish part, didn't care if it upset them or not. "We both know Maxem gives me more than enough work." She joked of their friend as they walked. She could already feel the air getting dryer as they ascended.
She nodded along, thinking of their King and Queen and the risk they were taking. The idea of being a pack leader wasn't something that interested her. It sounded like a lot of responsibility-and loss of privacy. Neither ideas very tempting to her, she liked being able to fade into the background too be left to her own devices.
Once again she laughed at his teasing. "Well, if you wish to call me that then I won't argue." She told him, squinting as the sun started to peek through at them from the cave entrance. "Oh thank goodness." She breathed, quickening her pace, though she knew the heat would be there, she was ready to be in the open air once again.

The slightest of laughs escaped him with the comment about Maxem. He was their friend, and Hawk was genuinely fond of the other man, but there was probably some truth to that statement. ”Fair. For what it’s worth though.. you do a good job. If something ever did happen, I’d trust you, to help me,” the ghost spoke, reverence for his packmate clear in the words. Whether it was treating a wound he might have herself, or pointing him towards someone that could, he did not doubt Athena’s ability for a second.
As the air currents around them changed, it was clear they were nearing the exit of the tunnel. Bright light was visible in the distance, and though Hawk wasn’t sure how long they’d been in the caves, at least it was still light out. On the flip side, though, that meant going back out into the heat..
Athena’s words were a pleasant distraction from that thought, though. ”It’s.. something my.. uh, dad taught me. Manners and respect. I think.. everyone, but especially someone as intelligent and pretty as you, deserves that,” he spoke candidly, taking a moment to think back on his past. Until his mind caught up with what he’d just said, which quite literally stopped Hawk in his tracks.
If he was lucky, though, maybe his packmate would just keep going and forget him here.
--sorry for the wait. couldn't resist his last comment though!

But you see, it's not me Athena felt a little puff in her chest from his praise, pride rising up inside her along with the unfamiliar feeling of being of worth of someone. She had spent so much of her child hood being berated by her father and not doing good enough that any kind of positivity or praise took her by surprise. She did her best to keep it from making her uncomfortable, though here with Hawk and up in the open air, the discomfort was barely a tickle in the back of her mind. "I'll do my best not to disappoint." She said casually, though the idea of Hawk being hurt at all created a bitter taste in her mouth. It was safe to say that she wouldn't want to see him harmed, even if it was accidental.
Once out of the caves she reveled in the feel of the heat on her fur. The air made her throat tighten but she welcomed it. It was further reassurance that she was no longer in those catacombs that made her heart race with fear.
Athena was ready to quip back at him about how many seemed to forget about manners and respect but then he said those words. Intelligent. Pretty. She almost tripped over her paws but caught herself last minute. "Oh," she breathed, these words making her heart flutter, though she told herself he was just being kind, there was no deeper meaning to those words, "well I don't know about that." She laughed, trying to calm her wilding thoughts, though she didn't notice him stop at first until she turned to face him to find he wasn't there. She stopped, turning back to look at him, tilting her head with a questioning look in her eyes. _________________________________________________________________________ It was well worth the wait ^-^

It helped, in this moment, that Athena did not like the caves. That she was so eager to move forth and feel the sunlight again, that she actually granted Hawk his wish. Athena did indeed leave him in the dark and relatively cool environment of the cave, which was something he preferred all the more at this moment. And she did not stop, at least, not until she was well out of the cave.
But then she did, and she turned back, staring at him quizzically, those pretty eyes sparkling in the sunlight. Her words, though, were not what he’d expected them to be. She didn’t know about that. The slightest of frowns tugged at the corners of his face.
”I do. This pack is lucky to have you,” he murmured, trying to shrug off the embarrassment and start forth again, at least until he was just inside the mouth of the cave. The heat hit him like a wall, harder than the stone caves they’d just been inside. It was definitely not something he wanted to head out to. That, and it was probably better if he was left alone, to think through these feelings.
”I.. don’t want to keep you, though. I think I’m.. going to head back, and explore that other path. But, I’ll see you around, yeah?” Hawk questioned, canting his head hopefully.

But you see, it's not me Athena could feel heat growing around her though if it was from the sun or her own nervous embarrassment she wasn't sure. Her eyes didn't move from Hawk as he stood in the cave, staring back at her until finally speaking again. His kind words kicked her heart into a flurry she didn't understand, but she couldn't bring herself to argue with him, too confused or perhaps unable to understand as to why he was being so sweet to her. Or maybe it was just the nerves of not being familiar with such words being directed at her.
She was still gathering her thoughts as he started to say his good byes. She stood there for a moment, unsure what to do, though she did feel a sense of worry when he said he was going to go back into the cave. Her body seeming to act on her own moved her paws to him. She trotted to the entrance of the cave, leaning in and pressing her nose to the fur of his neck. "Be careful, or else I'll force Maxem to come down there with me to find you." She said softly, pulling away from him so he could turn and go, though she still felt a sense of unease.

He hadn’t expected her to come back. Even less so, did he expect to the contact, something that lit a frenzy of odd emotions within the Knight’s chest. Despite the heat and the drought, the warmth such contact brought was oddly pleasant and left him wanting more after Athena moved away. Now was not the time for such any thoughts, though.
Instead, Hawk focused on her words, urging him to be careful. ”I will. I’ll call to you, when I’m done. And.. you be careful out there too,” he urged. The caves were dangerous, but right now, so was the outside world. It would be entirely too easy for someone like Athena - or even himself - to work too hard out there. And in the heat, that would only lead to dehydration and conditions Hawk didn’t want to see anyone suffer from.
Least of all any of his friends.
