Every battle is won before it is fought w/ Ramir temporary template till i find one i like better
Across a clear, blue sky dotted by few clouds flew a hawk with its sharp gaze pointed at the snow-blanketed earth below. A lone wolf padded across the white grounds, his mind focused on one thing: a good nap. The hawk observed the canine for but a moment, seeming to lose interest in its earthbound subject. Ramir's umbral eyes followed the trail of the raptor as it disappeared north further up the mountain. The possibility it was an Au'Dar tafa crossed his mind, but it seemed unlikely. He never saw an Au'Dar and their tafa far from each other, and the Au'Dar never left their territory anyways. His right ear flicked with unease anyways.
But now was not a time for such matters. Ramir had, as expected, made a get-away from his tasks as a knight and made off to a far-off corner of the Vertok territory. He had always been good at sneaking away. Silence, if nothing else, was something he excelled at. Though any experienced tracker could find him easily. He hadn't bothered to hide his pawprints as he trekked through the snow. His path was taking him downhill. Conditions up the mountain, though better for hiding, were harsher, especially in the winter. Being as weak as he was, it was highly likely he'd injure himself heading up alone.
He kept his gaze low as he swept the terrain looking for a specific feature. It had been a few sunrises back that he had spotted it while out patrolling: a smooth rock surface perfect for sunning on a day such as this. It was a miracle he had spotted it through the covering of snow, but finding good napping spots had always been a specialty of his. As he searched, his gaze paused on the spot of ocean that could be seen from his place on the mountain. A breathtaking sight and one he knew very little about. He had never ventured down to its shores. One day perhaps, but today was not that day. "Enough with admiring the ocean. That rock won't find itself" Ramir whispered to himself. If he was lucky, his fellow knights wouldn't come looking for him for a few hours. If he wasn't, they might be on him in a few minutes. Until then, he had to find his spot and hopefully catch a few winks.

Briar
Thoughts| "Spoken Word | Outside Speech | Cheshire
Another day of training done, though if it was up to Briar she would still be out in the forest working on her speed and agility but Ryv had basically chased her away, encouraging her to go enjoy her youth and do something else, but in her mind she could go enjoy herself after becoming a true hunter, but at the same time she didn't want to go against her mentor. He wasn't someone whose buttons one would want to push. She had learned that the hard way when she was younger. She had left the forest and meandered up into the mountains. Maybe she could do some kind of training up here or maybe she would try to develop some tracking skills like that pawn that helped with the hunts. He made her curious, though judging by how the others treated him she was a bit hesitant about getting to know him. She didn't want to the others to treat her poorly even though it didn't sit well with her how they treated him. Life was confusing sometimes. She concluded, her brows furrowing together as she took the soft paths upwards though a familiar scent caught her nose, making it twitch.
Her ears pricked and she snuffed the ground, catching the scent better and followed it, curiosity getting the best of her. What would another pack member being doing out here? Maybe they were doing something fun or they would train with her! Though her body ached from the previous training she still wanted to press on to continue to be the best hunter that she could be, so she was completely ready to take on and succeed at the rank. Eventually her eyes caught on to the figure she was trailing. A Knight. She didn't recognize who it was exactly, she didn't know his name but she did remember seeing him with the other Knights, maybe he would help her out.
She trotted after him, though kept some space between them when she finally decided to speak, careful not to startle him since his mind seemed elsewhere. "What're you doing up here? Important Knight business?" She asked, tailing wagging behind her.

[nospaces] [attr="class","letgo"] [attr="class","text"] [attr="class","scroll"] Trotting along, he was starting to think he'd never find the sweet little sunning spot he'd spotted before. "I could have sworn it was around here," he whispered to himself. Trying to smell it would prove a pointless venture considering it was a rock he was looking for and not a living thing. The only sense he could rely on was his sight. Considering his surroundings, that wouldn't be of much use either with how samey everything looked. Just when he thought he'd have to give up, he spotted the hidden stone. "Success!" he declared." [break][break] His joy wouldn't last long though as a voice piped up behind him causing the scaredy cat to jump. "What? Who?" Spinning around, he came face to face with another wolf. A sepia-toned fae from the looks of it. From the smell, the fact of how far up the mountain they were, and her overall friendly demeanor, all clues pointed to them being a fellow Vertok. His gaze slid sideways as he lied through his teeth, "Important knight business? Yeah. You could say that." Honestly, it didn't feel good to lie, but he didn't want to get in trouble for ducking out on his duties. More than anything, he really wanted that nap. Though looking at his unexpected companion, that nap probably wasn't going to happen. "I'm looking for something," he muttered, unsure of how to proceed.

A million dreams are keeping me awake Briar shifted from paw to paw, sure Ryv had a point in sending her off to explore but did he understand how much energy coursed through her body and what it did to her when she didn't have a way to express it? The girl was still young enough to not understand how overworking herself could harm her body, she just loved the feeling of flying across the forest floor and the promise of joining the hunting teams, she didn't think about the wear and tear on her joints or the potential splitting of her paws without rest, she could only focus on the good of it all. Standing there, waiting for the other to respond she could feel the build up of excitement and energy coiling in her muscles, ready for her to spring into action.
Her ears perked up, eyes widening with wonder when the Knight said that he was, in fact, out on important business. He was looking for something no doubt and her curiosity was peeked. Maybe she could put herself to the work of helping! "What are you looking for?" She asked, her words coming out in a bit of a rush, "I could help!"

[nospaces] [attr="class","letgo"] [attr="class","text"] [attr="class","scroll"] Oh man, now he'd made things worse. He didn't have any important knight business to do. In fact, he was avoiding his knightly duties. Looking at how excited his packmate was, he didn't know what to do. From looking at how they shifted from foot to foot, they likely had more energy than he'd ever had in his life. He groaned inwardly, what was he supposed to do with this bundle of sunshine and energy? He could lie again, but he had a sneaking suspicion that would only make things even worse. [break][break] He sighed, "Follow me." Ramir glanced mournfully at his prime sunning spot as he pasted it. Someday. He didn't want to disappoint the umbral she-wolf after how excited she appeared. The lazy knight had no option but to do his work now. Reluctantly, he directed their little party to the border. "I was patrolling." Well, before he'd snuck off, he had been. Ears up, he scanned their surroundings. His eyes searched the skies briefly. "We're closest to the Au'Dar territory here." The Au'Dar kept to themselves so it was unlikely they'd find anything. Regardless, they were obligated to patrol anyways. [break][break] "We don't usually expect to find anything here," Ramir remarked, his attention on the distant tree line that marked the beginning of the Au'Dar's forest home. He'd be lying if he said he didn't find some attraction to the area. It seemed a lot nicer than the Vertok's mountainous ranges. He thought himself more of a forest wolf than a mountain one. The forest housed a lot more shady spots and soft plants to rest on than the rough, hard ground of the mountains. His gaze traveled south to the plains of the Sanzin, "We expect more trouble from the Sanzin." Thus security was tighter on the borders near the troubling pack.

A million dreams are keeping me awake At the phrase 'follow me' Briar was all ears, literally, her fluffy brown ears were stretched as high to the sky as they could go, eager for the task at hand. Her goal was to be part of the hunting party so the tasks of the Knights were new to her but she was in no way opposed to learning about them and what they had to do. "Okay!" Any melancholy in the males face flew right over her head, her excitement thrumming through her like a million bees in a hive. The dame followed along, eyes wide and thirsting for knowledge and experience.
"Patrolling, got it," she nodded, the words leaving her without realizing it. Sometimes thinking out loud was a strong habit that she couldn't break, so accustom to it now that she rarely noticed when she was repeating others. She did, however, notice the way Ramir's gaze went up and her eyes followed his but she had no idea what she was looking for. Birds were a threat to picking off scraps from prey but what other threat could they have?
"The Au'Dar? Do they even exist? I don't remember anyone ever saying that they've seen one. Is it true that other little animals are their partners or whatever?" She asked, thinking of tales from when she was younger when she and the other younglings would whisper about the mysterious wolves and their bonds with other animals. She continued to look around, hoping to spot another mysterious wolf, or would that be too dangerous? She didn't think there would be a fight but who knew!
"The Sanzin," the young girls nose wrinkled, she knew a lot of horror stories about them, "if the Sanzin's more of a threat then what's the point or patrolling here if the Au'Dar don't do anything?"

[nospaces] [attr="class","letgo"] [attr="class","text"] [attr="class","scroll"] This one was certainly energetic. Ramir couldn't fathom how the umbral fae could have so much energy on these sordid mountains. It occurred to him, watching the she-wolf, that he didn't know her name. It wasn't surprising. Being antisocial and lazy, Ramir preferred to nap rather than associate himself with the rest of his pack. His fellow knights, he knew the names of. But for all others, he was hazy at best. He knew they were his packmates at least. "Umn," he ventured, "What's your name?" He probably looked like an idiot asking this. What wolf didn't know their packmates? [break][break] She had a lot of questions that was for sure. He peered off at the distant tree line where the Au'Dar roamed. "They do exist," he said, "If you go down to their borders, a bunch of them will come chase you away before you can even get near it." The Au'Dar welcomed no outsiders. That had been the standard for as along as Ramir knew. He'd had few experiences with the mysterious pack. The one time he'd had a chance to meet with the Au'Dar had been at the Three Packs Meeting. "It's true," he said, "They call them tafa." The tafa were the most interesting thing about the Au'Dar. He'd foolishly tried to touch one of their tafa things and had nearly faced a fang in his face. It had just been an innocent curiosity! "If you go to the Three Packs Meeting, you can meet some." And hopefully not get your face bitten off. [break][break] "Let's keep moving," he said with a wave of his tail. There was nothing to be found here. Ramir shared the fae's sentiments on the Sanzin. The violent pack was no match for him. He couldn't imagine anyone willingly staying in that pack. "We patrol here to look for loners and other threats. The Au'Dar may keep to themselves, but not everyone does." Again, he looked to the skies. His gaze trailed a distant bird, but he wrote it off. His bad experiences with the Au'Dar made him overly wary of them.

A million dreams are keeping me awake "Briar," the young girl replied casually, it took a lot to offend the girl, it didn't bother her that this packmate didn't know her name. She may have been a bit of a social butterfly that was more when she was around the wolves that held the rank she wanted. She may be overly energetic and excitable but her mind was set on what her future would be and she knew it was important to get to know the potential wolves she would be working with in the future besides her mentor.
Briar's eyes widened as Ramir spoke about the Au'Dar, trying to fathom what it would be like to see wolves running about with other animals as if they were friends. "Have you ever met them?" She asked in a tone of wonder, "what are they like? Besides secretive and chasey." She continued, briefly thinking of what kind of training it would be to poke around the border and be chased off, she bet she was faster than any of them.
When he directed to keep moving Briar didn't question it, that was something about her, she almost always followed directions. Well, more specifically she followed directions that she agreed with. She glanced back towards where the Au'Dar were for a longing second before turning and following the older brute, nodding along. "Are there a lot of threats?" She asked, "like...do a lot of loners try to poke around here?"

[nospaces] [attr="class","letgo"] [attr="class","text"] [attr="class","scroll"] "Briar," Ramir repeated to himself. He'd have to remember that for if they met again. Though there was half a chance he'd forget regardless. Names and faces weren't things he was good at. He could at least tell if someone was his packmate or not, but remembering names was a level too hard for Ramir. "Briar," he repeated again, brows creased in concentration. The chocolate fae didn't seem to mind that he didn't know her name. That was a blessing. [break][break] This she-wolf had a lot of questions. Curious and energetic. It wasn't a great combo for the lazy knight. But they did share one thing in common in their curiosity. Ramir was more than willing to share what little he knew. "I have," he grimaced, "It wasn't a pleasant meeting." The Sanzin may have looked down on the Vertok, but the Au'Dar were sometimes downright hostile. He'd love to meet one that was open for a chat. Ramir threw a longing look at the Au'Dar's forest. Who knew what secrets were hidden in those trees. "They're not very nice for one." At least, the ones he'd met. "They like to keep to themselves, and they're also protective of their tafa." He shivered remembering the encounter. That was something he wasn't going to attempt again any time soon. [break][break] Ramir scented the air and kept his ears open for any sounds of intruders. He certainly hoped there weren't any. The Vertok brute might be a knight, but he was hopeless in a fight. Too much of a coward and too unwilling to cause harm to be a real threat. "Recently, not really," he answered, poking his head over the a rise to peer at the lands below. "It's better that way. I much prefer peace." Throughout his time as a knight thus far, he had had few encounters. A fact he welcomed. He'd only heard from others of the influx of loners into their valley. "Most loners don't come up this far up the mountain."

A million dreams are keeping me awake The young dame nodded proudly when he repeated her name. She liked it, knowing it was from a pokey plant and made her feel like she had some kind of strength inside of her, showing that she may be slight in frame and sweet in face but was able to protect herself. "What's your name?" She asked him, even though she didn't hold it against him for not knowing her name she did feel bad for not knowing his.
She continued by his side, ears perked up, swiveled towards him as he spoke about his time at the meeting, eyes widening as a picture of the Au'Dar, but instead of thinking of them like regular wolves she pictures them as mysterious shadows with glowing eyes and ready to pounce, the image making her more and more curious and wishing she could see these beings and their Tafa. She did make note of the way he shuddered, making her eyes widened, "did you meet one of the Tafa?" She asked, wondering why he reacted the way he did.
Seeing the way he scented the air made Briar perk up, doing the same as if she knew exactly what he was doing but all the could smell were the trees and dirt, which made her want to run but she stayed still. "Why don't they come to the mountain? Is it because they're scared of us?" She asked, suddenly wondering what their packs reputation was. _______________________________________________________ That's a great question...I think before the draught?

[nospaces] [attr="class","letgo"] [attr="class","text"] [attr="class","scroll"] Ramir was both surprised and relieved when Briar asked for his name. It made him feel less bad that he hadn't known hers. "Ramir," he answered. Or Mira, but only his family called him that. The nickname was kind of girly, and he wasn't the fondest of it. His normal name was enough for him. [break][break] The chocolate she-wolf seemed really curious about the Au'dar. Ramir looked at her with concern. He wasn't sure that was a good thing considering that pack's attitude towards outsiders. "I tried to," he said, a bit wary, "Their wolf drove me away before I could even get close." It had been the most terrifying moment of his life. Though, for a coward like him, that wasn't saying much. "You're not planning on meeting them, are you?" The Au'Dar were not kind, and he didn't want Briar to end up hurt because of him running his mouth. She seemed like she had a much brighter future in store than he'd ever had. [break][break] Briar was still an apprentice if Ramir remembered correctly. There was no need for her to be getting into trouble so soon. Though that might have been pretentious of him to say considering he was only about a year older than her. "They're dangerous," he cautioned. He'd been at the Three Packs Meeting where bloodshed was banned, but an encounter elsewhere may not be as lucky.

A million dreams are keeping me awake "Well, nice to meet you Ramir, officially." She beamed at him, her mind leaping to the conclusion that they would be friends, seeing there not being a reason why they couldn't be. They were of the same pack and so far the conversation had been going well.
Briar's ear perked up as Ramir described his encounter, her eyes widening a little with wonder but her mouth dropped at his question. "Meeting them? I don't think so! But it would be so interesting to see how their pack works but they sound kind of scary." She said, sure she was built for speed but she wasn't oblivious to the chance there were others quicker than she and she wasn't meant for combat and didn't feel keen about risking her own life just for curiosities sake.
"I believe you, I think I'd rather stick around here." She said, brightening once again, "there's still a lot to be explored around here, I need new running trails."

[nospaces] [attr="class","letgo"] [attr="class","text"] [attr="class","scroll"] Briar's energy was a lot. If he wasn't such a slug, it would have been infectious. But he was lazy by nature, and all of this was like the sun shining directly in his eyes. "Nice to meet you, too," he said with a lot less energy and a lot more sheepishness. Briar was a great wolf and seemed the type to make friends easily. Quite the opposite of Ramir and his listlessness. [break][break] "Right," Ramir said, excited, perking up, "What are they hiding in their forest? Why are they the only ones with tafas? There's so much we don't know about them." He desperately wanted to explore Au'Dar territory and the pack itself. The Au'Dar were such a mysterious group and yet they grabbed his interest despite the danger. "Ah, but yeah, they are scary," he said, reigning in his excitement. Briar probably didn't want to hear about his curiosity in another pack. Not that he had any intention of joining them! Outsiders weren't allowed anyways. With how weak he was, he wouldn't even make it in the pack. [break][break] He smiled, "I agree. The Au'Dar might be interesting, but the Vertok are the best pack." The small brute didn't agree about the running trails. A nice leisurely walk was more his speed. A nap was even better. But he owed a lot to the Vertok. This was his beloved home. "I don't know how easy running would be in the Au'Dar's forest." He might not be fond of exercise of any kind, but he knew an open area made for easier running.

A million dreams are keeping me awake Any sense of her being too much for her companion went right over the young dames head. She was having a good time talking to someone new, such a good time that she almost forgot that her goal had been finding a place to run.
She did, however, notice the way that Ramir seemed to perk up, making her shift from paw to paw as her blood seemed to buzz in her veins. "Exactly!" She agreed with a nod, "I wonder how they find their tafas and how they take care of them too! Do you think they can talk to each other like we can?" She asked, the possibilities seemed almost endless but almost as soon as the excitement was in Ramir it disappeared, making her shoulders droop a little but she still remained optimistic. "Maybe some day they'll open up to us." She said, that would be amazing, to meet new wolves and learn about them!
"Vertok are the best," she agreed, returning his smile with one of her own. Sure she may have been biased but from the reputations of the other pack how could Vertok not be the best? They had the best land, the best leaders, and everyone got the chance to show what they were good at and some day she'd be able to do just the same once she became a true hunter. "It probably isn't easy, but the challenge would make it more fun! You'd have to learn how to zig zag through the trees and keep your eye on the prey," she said, already thinking about how she'd have to pivot and dip to miss the trees while at a high speed. That was challenge enough on its own but factor in chasing something like a deer or rabbit and it would be a real challenge that made her blood already start to pump.

[nospaces] [attr="class","letgo"] [attr="class","text"] [attr="class","scroll"] Ramir looked at the sky in wonder, contemplating Briar's question. He'd only ever met Au'Dar with tafas. "Maybe they're born with them?" he guessed, "And they grow up with them?" Ramir grimaced, thinking about if he had a tafa. It would probably be something small and feeble like a mouse or a frog. Something that wouldn't be of much use to the pack just as he was. He beamed but tempered his excitement, "I hope so." The Au'Dar's tafa were extremely interesting to the Vertok Knight. If he could, he'd learn everything about them without getting his face ripped off. [break][break] Ramir nodded in agreement. The Sanzin were cold and battle-crazy. He'd never survive in there. The Au'Dar, while interesting, were way too scary. There was something super intimidating about them that the Sanzin didn't have. He didn't know how to put it, but he felt inferior whenever he was with them. Well, more than he usually did. [break][break] The brute frowned. That didn't sound like fun to him. It sounded like a lot of extra work. Work he was not so excited about doing. "You'd know best." She was the hunter after all. He was just a knight. With his patrol of the Au'Dar border finished, he turned his attention to the Sanzin borders. He hated patrolling that area on account of how scared it made him. It was always a mystery whenever the Sanzin raids would come. Though when the raids did come, it was easy to tell. They weren't exactly subtle about it usually. He'd yet to deal with one and never wanted to. "Be careful," he warned, wary eyes on the horizon, "The Sanzin like to raid us. We never know when they will."
