Hawk - Vertok Knight
Dawnthieves Original Image
General Information
Alias(es): None
Gender: Male
Age: 3 years, 7 months
Pack: Vertok
Rank: Knight
Appearance
Based on size alone, Hawk may well cut an imposing figure, standing at approximately 39 inches and weighing in at around 130 pounds. While this size was inherited from his father, it was his mother who taught the young male the importance of agility and dexterity - traits he continues to develop to the best of his ability, given size. He will always seek to present himself with humility and decorum, and this reflects in the way he carries himself. His stride is poised, humble, calm. When approached, his posture and countenance will most often display a genuine kindness and altruism, a willingness to interact, converse with, or help anyone.
Hawk is fortunate enough to have accrued less scarring than some, with most every past wound hidden away beneath his thick, white coat. Should he step into the right light, or stand in a certain way, however, any close companions or observers may note a collection of markings from bite wounds present underneath the right side of his chin and along his shoulder.
Reputation + Personality
The big brother. The strong, silent type. That one friend who is always there to lend an ear or keep a secret. These tropes adequately describe Hawk in summary. His reputation is one of kindness and generosity. Hawk inherited his beliefs in humility, chivalry, love, and second chances from his parents and family. Doing for others is his way, though not simply because he believes it is right, but because he enjoys it. Brightening someone’s day, be it with something as small as a smile or a kind word is what he lives for. Beneath the smiles and kind gestures is a man of morality, and though it is somewhat less discernable, spirituality. Someone that values peace and justice, but recognizes that such things are not always achievable through conversation alone. Although he tends to evaluate those he meets, seeking to determine loyalty and trustworthiness, his compassionate nature means there is potential he may be deceived. While violence is strictly a last resort in any situation if he is on his own, Hawk would not think twice about backing a pack-mate or family member.
From his incident as a youth, he learned the fragility of life. The scars he bears beneath his fur are symbolic of the lessons learned in that time. While the male is grateful in large part for his gift of continued life, Hawk’s tendency as a result of it is to ignore his own needs in favor of others, in hopes of passing on his gift, and this has the potential to go beyond what is healthy. Skip on sleep to attend an early patrol? Count him in. Pass on a meal to feed the pups? Every time. Refuse treatment of an injury if he believes others need it more? Any day.
Perhaps his greatest fear is failure, and his biggest weakness is self doubt. It is both a motivator and something that nags at him, constantly, frustratingly, always there. Manifesting most commonly in two questions. Am I good enough? Did I do enough? The answer to both is almost always no.
As such, he tends to view most everything through a serious and straightforward lens. He dislikes laziness, liars, and excuses. He is not much for talking about himself, making jokes, sarcasm, or figures of speech. These things may slip past him if they are subtle enough. Recreation or meditation, on the other hand, has a purpose in his mind, even if he is not always quick to engage in the former. When not busy, Hawk tends to be introspective and may keep more to himself. He enjoys fitness and exercise, but also finds solace in the occasional swim, slow trek through the land, observing thunderstorms, or lazy day in general.
A relatively newer part of the Vertok family, the young male is eager to earn his place, grow accustomed to his new environment, home, and to familiarize himself with all present. He hopes to be of use in every way he can.
History
Most of Hawk’s earliest months were spent in relative comfort, born to doting parents that were members of a group of over a dozen or so wolves, most of them were relatives or close friends of Hawk’s parents. Due to the established friendship and bonds, there was no need for any sort of real hierarchy among the group, and there were never any doubts about trust. As such, every member of the group remained steadfastly committed to one another, and subsequently, to the care of Hawk and his two sisters.
As such, the trio were free to learn and grow without there ever being any real risk to their safety during their youngest months. As such, they were free to learn first by observation rather than participation, being attentively and prudently guided through both hunt and defense training tailored to their own, individual paces and preferences. Eager even at a young age to learn, Hawk accompanied the adults at every opportunity available to him, either tagging after his father and older males, learning from them during sparring sessions - or following his mother and the other hunters to observe how they patiently and cleverly tracked and hunted prey.
When the group did experience hardship, Hawk and his sisters were already past their first birthday. Drought and fire raged through their homeland that summer, putting their group in competition with others for food and suitable territory. Some were willing to compromise, while others weren’t. The siblings got their first glimpse of brutality and death when they came into conflict with another group, but it was also when they were able to witness the courage, love, and selfless ideals their elders had always taught on display. His family fought with vigor, but unlike their rivals, they were not motivated by greed or hate. This was demonstrated to Hawk when the young male found himself sorely outmatched and mere moments from meeting his demise, an uncle intervened before a killing blow could be struck, ultimately resulting in his death instead - the sacrifice of one life for another.
In the conflict, the group lost four members, although all of the young were safe. Their sacrifice is something Hawk will never forget, and it is something he is determined to honor until his dying breath. He hopes that his life will not be wasted. Even as the need for food and resources eventually forced the remainder of the group to split, carrying him away from his family in the following months, he remains devoted to them in mind, action, and spirit. They are with him when he closes his eyes, and he is sure he will see them all again. If not in this life, surely in the one that awaits beyond.
