---Hawk saying goodbye to Athena and Maxem before the Dam Event... just in case
The pack meeting had evidently been.. tense. But at the very least, someone there had come forward with a potential solution to the drought which had been plaguing all of them for seemingly entirely too long now. And the more he’d thought about it, the more it’d felt like he had to go. The more he’d thought about the pack, about the future, and her... the Knight had made his choice
Perhaps Athena and Maxem would be expecting it. Or perhaps they already knew, and had heard that he’d be going from someone else. Perhaps they wouldn’t know a thing at all and Hawk would have to tell them. He hoped they’d understand, without him having to explain it all.
But just in case, he’d passed word to each of them, asking Athena and Maxem to meet him near the fallen tree. The first place he’d really met each of them, and where this little group had all began. A part of Hawk couldn’t shake a nagging feeling in the pit of his stomach.
He hoped this wouldn’t be the last time he saw them here. But just in case…

When she had first heard of this damn Athena thought the whole idea was preposterous, how could little creatures like beavers cause so much damage? Their actions were killing the valley and now there was a whole new faction of wolves coming to help and forge a place for themselves here. The idea of it all made the grey knight feel suspicious of the whole thing and she wasn't planning on going. She didn't want to leave her pack unprotected and didn't much yearn for a journey but she should have known that someone she adored would be wanting to go out and risk their life, which she assumed was what Hawk had planned with calling this meeting.
On her way to the clearing she met with Maxem, who didn't say anything but the worried look in his eyes said it all. Their shoulders brushed against each other in a sign of support as they walked to the fallen tree. Maxems mind was buzzing. He envied the wolves who were able to go to investigate this dam, he wanted to go out on an adventure but didn't say a word. No one would support a Pawn going on such an important mission and representing their pack. A soft sigh escaped him as he sat by the tree, a foreboding feeling settling over his shoulders like a blanket of snow.

Both Athena and Maxem didn’t keep him waiting for very long before appearing together, and once they did, the white knight sauntered forth to greet each of them with a gentle shoulder bump, and then Athena with a little nuzzle, if they’d let him. Maxem settled by a tree, so Hawk took up a position near his friend, the soft sigh not going completely unnoticed.
”Thanks for coming. I won’t keep either of you waiting,” he began, deciding it better to get directly to the point on something like this. ”I’m sure you’ve both heard the news, about this expedition, and the dam. I was asked to go, and I’ve accepted. Wanted you both to hear that from me first, if you haven’t already.”
Hawk hoped they hadn’t, though.. judging by the forlorn looks on both of their faces, it was entirely likely they’d suspected it.

Of course the moment she had found a companion fate was pulling him away, Athena held back a sigh as she leaned into Hawks nuzzle, eyes partially closing but snapping back open the moment he pulled away. She looked between the two men in the clear, standing a little straighter as Hawk explained the reason he called their meeting, confirming her suspicions. She almost laughed at herself for being right about something like this. Her maw opened to speak but Maxem was quicker.
"I think we both had an idea you'd be one of the two to go," Maxem said a bit ruefully, "but it's an honor to be chosen...I think I speak for both of us when I say...come home safe." He said softly, how awful would it be for him to lose one of his only friends in this godforsaken place.
Athena rose, padding over to Hawk, stopping in front of him, eyes narrowing as she looked into his. "You have no choice but to come back." Her voice was strong but underneath, like ice, it was cracking for how cruel fate would be to take away one of the few shining things in her life.

Maxem spoke first, to confirm that the two of them had indeed suspected it. And to what he said next, Hawk offered a small, solemn nod. It was an honor to be chosen, though it was one the white knight half wished wasn’t his. The looks on the faces of his present company spoke more than their words.
And it pained him. Athena’s words, the way her eyes gazed into his, were almost pleading. Almost unconsciously he moved forth to embrace her, a soft sigh escaping him. ”I plan on it. But we all know…” he paused there, uncertain of what to say. It hurt to even think about not coming back, on the off chance, just in case..
”I love you, Athena. If something does happen, the time I've had with you has been among the best of my life,” he spoke softly, relishing in the touch for a moment before gazing towards Maxem. ”And you.. Maxem, are more than a friend. I consider you family, like the brother I’d always wanted. If something happens..” again though, he trailed off, though Hawk hoped his eyes spoke the message he couldn’t bring himself to say aloud. I trust you to watch out for her.
Maxem and Athena had been doing that already, long before he'd gotten here. If something happened to him, these two would still need each other.

Athena sunk into his touch with a sigh, he heard what he had to say but it didn't make things hurt any less as she grappled with the fact that Hawk was leaving. She did glance at Maxem, whose somber gaze was sure mimicking hers, they did have each other but Hawk had been like the missing piece they needed to make their group feel whole.
"I love you too Hawk," Athena said softly, pulling away to look at him in the eyes, "you better come back." Her voice had meant to sound strong, almost like a threat but it only came out hallow as she took a step back.
Maxem straightened when Hawk addressed him, nodding. Brothers. Hawk had become more like kin to him than his own blood and it was fascinating and ironic that now he'd be stepping away. "I will do my best brother." He said, taking a step towards the two, he wasn't strong and he was intelligent but he could piece together what Hawk meant. He'd be there for a Athena but he refused to accept the possibility of Hawk not coming back. He had to.

As much as he wished he could promise them that he’d return, or even speak the words just to try to put their minds at ease, he could not. To do so felt as if it would be, at the very least deceptive, if not outright dishonest. ”I will do my best. I promise you that.” It was all he could offer.
”I just.. can’t shake this feeling I have. Like.. something bad’s going to happen. Maybe not to me, but.. someone.” He hoped not. But Hawk’s instincts had hardly ever steered him wrong before.
And the white knight could not shake the dread creeping over him as each day passed, drawing him closer to departure. He hoped it would prove to be wrong. To be nothing, and that everyone would come back safe.
But even in the journey, there were risks. He’d be traveling with a group of wolves he knew very little about, wolves from other packs, and going further than he’d gone since he had first arrived here in the first place. That, and they had very little idea of what to expect. One random woman’s word was not quite something he was willing to trust. But at this rate, they couldn’t afford not to try.

"Don't say that." Maxem's retort came only seconds after Hawk voiced his worry, jumping to the conclusion that this someone could be Hawk. He didn't want to lose his friend, that was clear, he didn't even want to think about that being an option and it was like if it was said out loud it would become true. He didn't care about the other wolves going on this quest, he didn't know them, didn't consider them family, they simply didn't matter. The only wolf whose return he'd wait for would be Hawks.
Athena shook her head, "just...be careful Hawk." She said softly, not wanting to play into this feeling, perhaps it was denial speaking but she refused to accept the idea of harm befalling her beloved and if anything did happen, as awful as it sounded, she hoped that if something bad did happen it would be to someone else and not the man she had given her heart to. Briefly she wondered who the Sanzin would bring, her stomach churning at the thought that her brother would be there...if he was she hoped Hawk would use his senses and avoid Ares.

Don’t say that, Maxem retorted rather quickly. Athena added on that he should be careful, too. It wasn’t so much the words, or even the tone, that had Hawk’s ears pushing back, and his gaze turning away from each of them. It was that he couldn’t shake the feeling, despite not wanting to think of, much less say something like that. ”I.. can’t help it. You two are my family. You deserve to know what I think.”
He was sure they knew him well enough to know he’d be right in the middle of it, not wanting to hide from danger or have anyone else doing the hard work. Even if it meant added risk to himself. There was no way he could ever live with himself if someone else got hurt..
”Let’s.. maybe try not to think about it, though. Spend some time doing something fun?” Like a game, or something. Maybe even just sitting around talking about things other than this. Anything to provide a distraction and to enjoy what little time they had left together.

Athena softened when he said they were family, glad to have Maxem included, he was like the brother that she sometimes found herself wishing she'd had growing up with. "Of course, it's just...hard to have to think about things like that." She said softly, looking over at Maxem then at Hawk. "I think doing something fun would be the best idea right now as well." She agreed, wanting a moment to forget what was hanging over their heads.
Maxem perked up a little, telling himself he needed to let this go and not worry. "Alright...fun, that doesn't include climbing trees." He said with a grin at Hawk, he wasn't sure what they were going to do but he knew that it would be worth it before Hawk had to leave.
