Smoke

It hadn't been too long since Timber had guided their small group into this new land and let the other disburse. All the new sights and smells enticed Smoke and he found his days filled with roaming. He was lucky it was Winter, the mornings and evenings were filled with fog while the snow offered him camouflage, though those with a trained eye would pick him out within seconds, and yet that didn't happen. Sometimes he wondered if other wolves even called this realm home, but then he'd find scattered remains from hunts and the baying of unfamiliar howls. Sometimes those sounds made him remember that he was alone. His parents long gone like the Summer winds and his siblings had moved on. He found peace in being alone but sometimes the peace became stifling.
When was the last time he had a job? He couldn't remember. He felt restless as he wandered into another forest, a fresh coating of snow hiding most scents. He slipped between the well spaced tree trunks as his stomach rumbled, reminding him of its existence. Being alone often made him forget to eat until his belly screamed at him. At least now he could focus on a goal. The season gave its own challenges in finding prey but he knew there was something stirring somewhere. His ear pitched forward, straining for the faintest of sound.
The dirty gray male walked farther when he heard a snuffling and low breathing as he came to an out cropping of rocks. His paws maneuvered up them, slipping on the slick surface but he managed to catch them and make it to the top, peering out into a clearing of young saplings only to have his gaze land on a female moose. She couldn't be much older than a year but a moose for any single wolf could be lethal. He stood there and stared. Want. His mind whispered-or what it his empty stomach? He watched the large creature push her muzzle through the snow in search for something to eat, oblivious to the wolf huddled amongst the rocks above. It was too dangerous but the temptation was great.
