- Axel -
All seemed quiet except for the distant twittering of birds as Axel made his way through the forest, his tail swaying happily behind him whilst he admired the surroundings. This was the first time he had been to this particular forest, but he couldn't have imagined a better time to explore; now that the sun was lower, the heat of the day was no longer so intolerable, but is was still high enough to shine between the leaves of the tress and dapple the ground with many bright patches of sunlight. However... he could swear everything was only getting sunnier the more he walked. The trees were beginning to thin out a little, and the terrain seemed to be getting more rugged as he continued on.
Axel paused for a moment, glancing up at the nearby mountains that towered above the trees. It seemed he was approaching the foothills, and judging by the faint scent on the breeze, he was not too far from pack territory. He had been curious about the packs that inhabited the land for a while, but he was still yet to meet any of them. 'I wonder if they're friendly,' he thought to himself, taking a few steps closer so that he could get a better look at the route ahead. The uneven, rocky slopes gave promise of an exciting adventure, but he felt tired just looking at it. A bit too tired... Axel shook his head in an attempt to regain his focus, but all it did was make him feel lightheaded. That's when he realised; the sun was now shining directly on his thick fur coat. He gave a defeated sigh, deciding it would be better to save such an arduous journey for another day, unless he wanted collapse halfway. Suddenly, little seemed more appealing than a nice fresh drink and a shady spot to relax in.
The shade was easy enough to find, but he was unfamiliar with the area and could only guess where there might be water. He closed his eyes for a moment, recalling the mountains above his homeland, and the beautiful clean waterfalls that flowed down from them into the rivers below. When he opened his eyes again, he tried to imagine the same in the scene before him, but everything looked so dry and desolate. There was, however, a large crevice in the ground nearby just at the beginning of the foothills. It seemed to open up into a wider area which was bordered mostly by rocks and ledges just a little taller than he was, and one side of it was gently sloped, sheltered by a few dry bramble bushes. It looked like the perfect place for water from the mountains to gather. Axel ran over excitedly, slowing down as he neared the edge to carefully navigate the rugged terrain. The ground felt warm beneath his paws, and it almost seemed to shift as he reached the ledge, placing his forepaws right at the end as he gently peered over. His expression was hopeful as he searched for water, but all he could see was parched, rocky ground, causing his ears to drop to the side. He took a couple of steps back, trying to figure out what to do next. Relaxing in the shade seemed like a nice idea with or without the water, but surely there had to be something to drink somewhere...

COAHOMA It had to be around here somewhere. Coahoma was searching for a red mark similar to the crescent-shaped ones on either side of her flank; on a tree, a rock, anything... but she swore, she could never find these caches. Granted, this northern one seemed quite out of the way, and she meant way out of the way. Had anyone even been up here to refill it lately? She wouldn't be surprised if the red Mercurior insignia was worn and faded by now. Yeah, that was definitely why she couldn't find it... she hoped.
"Maybe I took a wrong turn..." Coa pondered to herself, placing her bearish paws inelegantly along the rugged trail. Oh! Loose rock slipped out from beneath her hind leg, attempting to take her with it as it slid down the hill. She managed to pull herself forward and regain her footing, only just. "Hrmm..." She hummed, pausing her walk to gaze up at the forest canopy. It seemed as if the leaves barely blocked out any of the sun's rays, and soon she saw why. Casting her sage-green eyes forward, she found herself peering up the slopes of a looming mountain. Surely the cache wouldn't be all the way up here... although a rocky crevice would be the perfect place to store a snack, she had to admit. She'd keep moving, having to haul her brawny self up slopes and jutting rocks, it was an exhausting task for a large woman! As she finally broke through the dried underbrush of the forest, Coa had to pause to catch her breath, the sun beating down on her white and brown coat. A snaggletoothed smile ever-present, she squinted against the sun. Still no sign of that cache...
But what was that? Movement just a little ways off caught her eye. Something, someone? Seemed to be trotting towards something. Oh! Maybe they found the Mercurior stash! Enthusiasm quickly replaced her doubt, and like a puppy energized by something exciting, the woman lifted her head and began a loose jog towards the brown wolf. Aside from the crunching of large paws on dried dirt and rock, she didn't think to make her presence known or greet this fellow from afar.
"Hey there!" Coa exclaimed, slowing to a steady walk as she approached. |

He definitely was thirsty... he couldn't deny that, yet he also knew he wasn't yet desperate. 'Maybe it can wait a while,' he thought to himself, smiling lightly as he recollected the trees of the forest and the patches of shade that almost seemed to dance beneath them whenever the leaves swayed. It wouldn't take long to get back into the deeper parts of the forest, and the ambient sounds were quite soothing, perfect for getting some rest. It was decided; he would look for something to drink later instead.
Just as Axel began to turn to make his way back, he hesitated, his notched ear flicking. Something didn't seem right... He was sure he could hear crunching, but why would anything be crunching? He quickly turned to look, his gaze following the direction it was coming from. Immediately, he caught sight of an unnervingly large creature approaching him, its massive paws shifting the ground as it moved, and in that very moment, it seemed to call out. Startled, Axel gave a yelp of surprise, instinctively jumping backwards. His back paws landed on the edge of the ledge overlooking the pit, but the force of his landing caused the dry, rocky ground to give way, sending him down with a panicked gasp.
He felt his shoulder hit the ground with a light thud, followed by the sound of small stones hitting the hard surface as gravity worked its magic on what remained of the unstable ledge. A little dazed, he shook the dust from his head before quickly scrambling to his paws. Whatever it was that was coming for him was still near; he had to get out of here. He hurriedly glanced around, but he was surrounded by walls and ledges on all sides, except for the one sloped path which led to a thicket of brambles. His ears dropped at the realisation. Whilst he thought he might be able to push his way through, he didn't want to try unless he really had to. 'Maybe if I just stay here, it'll leave.' Nothing was going to risk getting stuck by following him down, right...? As much as he wanted to run, it seemed like the best plan he had, and he was willing to take the chance.

COAHOMA "Have you seen a--" Coa cut herself off as the wolf looked at her, and in the same instant, leapt away from her. with a front paw hovering above the ground, Coa hesitated. Was she really that startling? She figured they would have heard her at least, surely she couldn't be that stealthy, but perhaps this wolf was hard of hearing. She opened her mouth to apologize, but before she could even get the words out, the wolf just...sunk into the ground!? Squinted eyes widened, afraid that if she blinked she would have missed it. The earth seemed to collapse beneath the wolf, and just like that, they were sucked down to a pit.
"Oh, jeez, are you okay?!" Coa called after them, resuming her swinging jog and pausing at the ledge. For a moment, she loomed over the pit with the sun at her back, squinting through the dust to make sure the wolf was alright. Once the cloud settled, she could see them more clearly - medium, somewhat scruffy looking fur, earthy brown in tone, and caked well in dust. From the tall woman's perspective up above, they looked absolutely tiny...she didn't even think of how monstrous she must look from down there.
They were already on their feet, so she assumed that they were okay. She'd taken quite a few tumbles like that before, after all, and somehow managed not to get hurt...most of the time. Coa directed her attention to the rest of the gorge, scanning the steep, dry, and rocky edges on both sides, the mountain on another (maybe where a waterfall once lay, she quickly pondered), and a more gentle slope on the other, covered in dense brambles, no less. It didn't seem like there were many ways out. "Uh..." She offered an awkward smile, long canines peaking past her bottom lip. "I'm sorry 'bout that, erm...here!" Pitching her weight forward, the woman bent down with one front paw dangling over the dry dirt overhang, and the other extended out towards the wolf. If they jumped, maybe she could help them scramble up. But, then, she felt herself slipping forward, and her expression fell into shock just moments before the dirt gave way beneath her, unable to hold her bulky weight. Coa let out a surprised noise as she pitched forward, tucking her muzzle beneath her paws and falling heels-over-head.
She landed on her back with her rump hitting the rocky soil hard, all four legs falling to the ground with a thump as she rolled to the side. she let out a groan-hum, just another of those tumbles to add to the record. Completely used to her clumsiness, Coa rose to her paws like nothing had happened, shaking out her long fur in a shower of dirt, and a single hack to clear her throat. Dust once again settled, and from her new perspective from the trench, she could see just how tall these ledges were. "Hrm, quite the pickle we have now..."

Axel stared ahead with great focus, waiting to see if his pursuer would show themselves at the top of the pit. His muscles were tense, ready to run if needed, but he tried to remain still as to not show his fear. If it looked like he wouldn't back down without a fight, maybe they would give up. It was only a couple of seconds before a dark shadow crept into view, and he tried not to tremble as he glanced up at the massive figure before him, squinting in an attempt to make out the details against the blazing sun. It only lasted for a moment, however, as the creature began to speak and lowered one of its paws towards him, which in turn caused him to quickly back away. He wasn't listening at all; judging by the size of those paws, it appeared to be a bear, trying to catch him as if he were some kind of fish.
"Don't eat me!" he exclaimed, unable to hide his fear any longer, slowly cowering to the ground. He then realised that the bear probably wouldn't understand, but hopefully it would have mercy on him nonetheless... Suddenly, the ground beneath it collapsed, much like it had when he had fallen in, sending up a large cloud of dust. As everything began to settle, Axel's gaze flitted between the creature and the bramble bushes a couple of times, and as the bear began to move, he quickly made a run for the slope. He had to get out somehow, and it seemed like the only option left. Lowering his head, he tried to find the best exit point before attempting to shove his way through the bramble bushes. He could feel the branches tugging at his fur, but he was determined to make it, even if he had to ruin his wonderful coat in the process. At least the fur would grow back. Yet, that was the least of his concerns; he was no longer moving forwards, and he could hear more activity from the bear behind him. He gave one more desperate tug, but it was getting him nowhere, so he decided instead to try and face the bear. The fur was still snagged on his left side, but he was able to break free enough to shift position, his expression fearful as he laid eyes on the creature once more. It almost sounded like it was speaking to him, and in words he could understand, but that would go against all he knew of such animals. 'Could it be... a talking bear...?' he wondered.
Now that the sun wasn't obscuring his vison so much, he could see a lot clearer. It was the most colourful bear he had ever seen, with fur of brown and white. Axel's mouth opened to speak, but he just stared silently for a moment. It almost looked like it could be some kind of wolf-bear hybrid. "Can you... understand me?" His tone was somewhat awe-struck, but despite his efforts, he still couldn't stop himself from trembling a little. He wasn't sure if it still wanted to eat him, but at least if it could understand him, perhaps there was a chance he could reason with it.
Burn Axel logic at its finest.

COAHOMA What'd they say? Coa barely caught it as she was rising from her tumble. Don't yeet them? She wasn't entirely sure what that word meant, but it sounded like something to do with jumping, or throwing, maybe. "I'll admit, I am a very strong woman, but I don't think I could throw you--" Amid her maundering, Coa turned to face the wolf, only to realize that they had gone up the slope behind her and were struggling in the briars. "Oh, hey, be careful, now!" She cautioned, jogging up the small incline to help them. She could understand not wanting to be stuck in some pit, but they could at least wait for her to help them out, jeez.
Just before she reached their side, the smaller wolf turned to face her once more. Coa paused, her brow narrowing as she tried to interpret their expression. They seemed to be processing something as well, or maybe that was just their face, she wouldn't judge. At long last, the wolf - seemingly a male by the voice - spoke to her. "Can you... understand me?" Coa's own face scrunched up at the words, tilting her head in confusion. "Of course I can understand you, I speak English," she replied as if it hadn't been obvious. But then she noticed the fellow tremble a little, and it all fell into place. At least...most of it. "Oh!" Coa exclaimed as it clicked. "I must have scared you, I am so sorry. Y'know, sometimes I just do that," With a chuckle, the woman sat back on her haunches casually. "There was one time someone saw my Mercurior marks and thought it was warpaint." A hearty laugh escaped her as she stuck one hind leg out awkwardly, showing off the red, mildly faded brand on the white of her flank. But, how rude of her, rambling on while this male sat stuck in some brambles, and without even knowing her name. She tsked her manners.
"I'm Coa. Well, Coahoma technically, but I've always preferred Coa," She stood up then, taking a step towards the man before hesitating. As if speaking to a child, she cooed, "It's alright, I won't hurt'cha," Coa offered an awkward smile, showing off her snaggleteeth.

The bear was closing in on him, its looming presence only making matters worse. For a moment, he wished he could just sink further into the brambles, sheltering in the protection of their prickly branches... but that didn't seem to be an option, so he braced himself for its attack, ready to do all he could to fight back. ...Yet, instead of teeth, he was met with a puzzled expression. Axel simply stared in confusion for a moment before returning a tilt of his head, his fear finally beginning to ease just a little. It seemed it could understand him, after all. The bear even began to speak, confirming that it spoke the same language as him. Suddenly, he was beginning to wonder if it was even a bear at all. Now that he could see it up close, it looked a lot more like a wolf...
The stranger finally seemed to understand the situation, and even began rambling on about something casually, but he could hardly make sense of it. He just nodded along, giving an awkward smile as they showed him a strange mark on their leg, its colour reminiscent of blood. If it wasn't war paint, then he figured it was either some kind of injury or a mysterious marking unlike any he had seen before. Although he was still tense, with the immediate threat seemingly gone, he was comfortable averting his gaze long enough to cast a quick glance at the bushes that clung to his fur. It seemed he was stuck there, so he turned back to continue listening to what the stranger had to say. They - or she, he assumed - gave an introduction, one much easier to understand than the previous words that had gone right over his head. 'Coa,' he thought, suddenly feeling a little more comfortable knowing the stranger's name. Maybe she really was a wolf.
He was about to speak, but before he could, Coa stood up and took a step closer. Instinctively, Axel began to cower once more, sinking back into the brambles as she approached. She seemed friendly enough, but her size intimidated him greatly, and he still wasn't sure he could trust her. That is, until she offered a few words of reassurance. 'Maybe she just wants to help,' he wondered, letting his tensed muscles relax a little as he realised his predicament was probably the reason for her approach.
"Why... why were you following me?" he asked at last. This whole situation was confusing to him, and he at least wanted to know why she had been sneaking up on him to begin with. Whilst he waited for an answer, he reached down to grab one of the bramble branches between his teeth, carefully positioning it where he could bite through without getting badly scratched. He knew it would be difficult to unhook the branches from his fur, but if he could break free from the bushes, it would make the task a whole lot easier.

COAHOMA "Why... why were you following me?" Coahoma was quick to take the fellow speaking as an invitation to help him - that only made sense, right? Breaking from her hesitant stance, she padded to the back of the wolf and circled to the side of the briars, her broad shoulder bumping into the man's flank as she delved right in. Though completely inconsiderate of personal space, her plan was to work on the briars snagged into his side while he worked on the front.
"'Ollowing yo-?" She repeated with her teeth around a bramble stalk. She used her large - and thankfully very fluffy - paws to smash the briars down, and with lips curled in an awkward face, pulled against the twigs stuck in the male's fur with her teeth. The brambles were dry and bitter with the drought, and as one part came loose from its grasp, she snapped it in half with powerful jaws. That piece wouldn't harm this fellow anymore, at least! "I was in the area looking for a food store, an' when I saw you I was going to ask if you'd seen it." She moved forward a little bit, still as close as she could be between the smaller wolf and the brambles. "Y'know, no matter how many times Timber shows me, I can never remember where it is!" she chuckled at the thought of her Lord having to show her just one more time. "Anywho, I saw you fall down that ditch so I had to help. It seems like we're both a bit clumsy though, eh?" Coa snorted with amusement as another thought crossed her mind. "Could say I fell head over heels for ya, hah!" She boisterously bumped the man's side with her elbow, perhaps a little harder than necessary. Although she couldn't be less interested in him, she couldn't help but snicker to herself as she went back to working on the spiky twigs.
Just a few more pulls and tugs and he should be free. A few tried snagging Coa's own fur, but at least her close proximity to the stranger was keeping her from getting caught up in the thicket herself. And speaking of strangers, she hadn't even gotten his name. Sho, who'er you?" She asked mid-bite on a briar, sage eyes glancing over to see if she could catch his own. She hadn't paid too much attention before, but they seemed to be a nice shade of brown that went with his coat.

He felt the branch snap between his teeth, and with a single jolt of his head, went to cast it aside... but the branch was still snagged in his fur. 'Oh well, I'll pull it out later.' For now, all that mattered was breaking free. Axel reached down to grab the next branch, when suddenly, Coa's large shoulder barged right into him, almost knocking him off balance. "Wha-? Hey!" A little startled and still uncomfortable with her presence, he was tempted to ask her to back off a little, but aside from the sudden tug on his fur from the brambles, she hadn't actually hurt him. He just stood still for a moment, knowing that if he tried to grab another branch and she knocked into him again, he might just get his face all scratched up. At the very least, he could simply pretend to appreciate her efforts.
As Coa went on to explain why she had approached him, Axel listened patiently, once again struggling to make sense of what she was saying. 'Timber... Is that a name, or does she take advice from trees?' he wondered. He figured it was probably the former, but it was hard to tell; some trees could serve as good landmarks, after all. 'Maybe it's both...' His thoughts were soon interrupted as Coa continued, confirming that she had just been trying to help him all along. He looked down at the ground, smiling awkwardly once more as he thought about how he had reacted. "Heh..." She probably thought he was a total coward.
As if things weren't already awkward enough, Coa just had to make a joke about falling head over heels for him, followed by another nudge which almost knocked him off his paws. Once he had regained his footing, he gave a quiet, nervous laugh. He was grinning on the outside, but internally he couldn't help but wonder, 'When will it end?'
He had been so distracted by Coa's rambling that he hadn't even realised just how effective she was at clearing the brambles away. Already, he could move around a lot more freely, so he tried to step away from the bushes as much as they would allow. It seemed that wasn't the only thing he had forgotten, however, as his new acquaintance reminded him that he was still yet to share his name. "Oh!" He gave another awkward laugh. "I was so caught up dealing with these brambles that I completely forgot to introduce myself!" Suddenly feeling a little playful, he wiggled his eyebrows a couple of times, perhaps a little too impressed by his own joke. "My name is Axel," he began, his tone friendly as he spoke. "I was just looking for water, and then I was going to take a nap under a nice, shady tree..." He looked down at the brambles once more, finally able to see the humour in it. "But as you can see, it really didn't go to plan..." He could feel that the bushes had loosened their grip, so he decided to give a quick tug, but a couple of branches still held him back. 'They're dry,' he thought. 'They should be quite brittle.' Eager to be free from their grasp, he simply pulled harder, stumbling forwards as the branches began to snap.
"I'm free!" he called out with excitement, prancing around joyously for a few moments before stopping to shake out his pelt. Looking down at the pieces that still clung to his side, he tilted his head. "Hey, do you think I could use these to carry food around with me? Just hook it on and save it for later!" As he turned back to Coa, his expression shifted to that of a warm smile. "Thank you for helping, by the way." Regardless of how awkward the situation was, he couldn't deny that she had sped up the process a lot. Now he just had to clean up his fur and find a way out of the pit. That's when he realised; some parts of him almost felt... slightly cooler. Glancing back at the brambles, Axel's ears suddenly dropped. "My fur! My beautiful, precious fur!" He rushed over as quickly as he could, stopping in front of a small clump of brown hair. "How bad is it?" he asked, turning to try and get a look. Fortunately it seemed the rest of his fur was long enough to cover the new bald patches, but he knew it would look like a total mess if ever it was brushed backwards.

COAHOMA Glancing up to the small male, Coa noticed the grin spread on his face, and the presumably joyous chuckle - even if quiet - he offered in response to her totally hilarious joke. Yes! He was loving her, she thought! Forget finding the Mercurior cache, perhaps by getting distracted she had found a new friend instead.
"I was so caught up dealing with these brambles that I completely forgot to introduce myself!" While Coa may be slow to recognize social cues, she was never slow to miss a joke. “Hah!” She chortled, flicking a large paw at him as if to admit defeat. “Good one, Axel.” She praised him while acknowledging his name. She wasn’t one to ponder on names, but Axel seemed like a good one, she liked it. He went on to describe his plan for the day, to which Coa gave an intrigued little ooh, still snapping twigs and pulling briars where she could. Finding some water and some shade to nap in really did sound so nice… how could these vile plants of pain ruin his dreams like this?! Whatever it would take, she’d make sure her new friend got the relaxing day he deserved! …even if she barely knew him! As Axel started to pull against the few remaining lengths of brambles, the twigs grew taut in front of the woman. Coa gave a thoughtful noise, before snapping her big ol’ jaws around the brittle branches, biting them clean in half. “Ahah!” She exclaimed as the man was victoriously freed, although stumbled forward at the sudden lurch. “Oh- sorry!” Coa quickly caught herself from the excitement, afraid she had made him fall again. But he caught his footing, much to her relief. Perhaps she was just too used to apologizing.
“I’m free!” Axel cried. “Yeah!” Coa could only share his excitement, overjoyed by their teamwork as she stepped away from the wall of brambles with her tail waving behind her. But then the brown wolf spoke of some crazy idea, making Coa do a double-take. Was she surprised? A little. Was she judging the man's sanity, as she should? Not at all. Did she have sparkles in her eyes at the sound of this food rig? She absolutely did! “Ooh! You could hang fish on it!” She added with a broad grin. Fish was her favorite and with something like that, she could carry around snacks all the time! How could she ever deny snacks? She totally had to try this out, but she would save it for later, as Axel’s smile softened and he offered his thanks. “Oh, psh-” The large woman jokingly waved him off with her paw, as if being good help was just something she did naturally. “Anytime, pal.”
"My fur! My beautiful, precious fur!" Coa’s sage-green eyes widened at the sudden change, watching as the poor man rushed over to the patches of fuzz left on the many grabby pricks of the briars. Oh no, his coat was beautiful, and now it had the faintest dents beneath the rest of his fur. So, the evil briars had the last laugh… "How bad is it?" Coa hesitated, her face offering an awkward smile. It wasn’t that bad, but… “Uhh… here!” The woman sat and lifted her front paw, giving her pads a big, wet lick and then slapping it across Axel’s side to smooth down his fur. Yeah, that’ll totally fix it! …Or, maybe not. Puzzlement crossed her face as she thought. “We could stick the fur back on with mud?” Not the worst idea at least, but they would need mud for that, and right now they were stuck in a dry gulch. “Hrm, I’spose we’d need to get outta here for that, though…”

- Axel -
It seemed Coa liked his portable food idea. She even suggested hanging fish on the brambles which clung to his fur, causing his tail to sway with excitement. "Yes! We've gotta try it sometime." He couldn't remember the last time he'd even had fish, but that was all the more reason to find some.
It surprised him when she referred to him as 'pal'. Yet, despite her intimidating size and rough demeanour, he had to admit that she actually seemed quite nice now that he was beginning to get to know her. Perhaps they could become unlikely friends, after all. The thought only lasted for a moment, however, before Axel found himself panicking over the fur he had lost in his attempts to break free from the bramble bushes.
He stared at Coa expectantly, looking up at her with concern as he waited to hear her opinion. Her smile wasn't exactly reassuring, but it seemed she had an idea. He winced as her bear-like paw swept across him, leaving his fur slightly damp with saliva as she tried to smooth it down. He could appreciate the thought, but... she was ruining his look! Instinctively, he took a step back and shook out his coat once more, dislodging one of the dry, broken branches and causing it to clatter against the rocky ground. It was clear Coa was trying her best to find a solution, so he tried to stay calm, offering a small smile of encouragement. It wasn't long before she suggested using mud to reattach the fur. Axel paused for a moment, lightly tilting his head to one side as he gave the idea some thought. She was right; there wasn't any mud where they were, but finding a way out seemed like a good idea regardless. "Maybe... we could look for something to drink and see if there's any mud there!" That way, he would get to quench his thirst at the same time. "It would probably wash out the moment I go swimming, but... I could always just go swimming first!" He glanced back at the clumps of fur clinging to the bramble bushes, coming to a sudden realisation. "The mud will probably dry out too soon if we try to bring it back with us, so I guess that means we have to take the fur to the mud... That means it's time to test the new food carrying method!" he called out excitedly as he bounded back over to the bramble thicket, oblivious to what his words may have just implied.
His tail was held a little higher now, swaying from side to side as he carefully unhooked one of the fur clumps from the brambles and moved it to the branches that clung to his side. Of course, now that he wanted it to get stuck, it just had to fall right to the ground... Axel picked it up again, nudging the fur a little harder this time until it was secured. He then turned to face Coa, tilting his head to one side again. "How exactly are we going to get out of here?"

COAHOMA At Axel's excitement at her fish idea, Coa absolutely beamed, her two long canines flashing in a giant grin. Most would have called her ridiculous and waved it off as nonsense, but Axel actually understood and agreed! She was excited at the prospect of having a new friend who would go fishing with her. She didn't know many of the best spots in the valley yet, but maybe they could find them together! That would be so much fun, and she could show him the skinning techniques of her birthpack...
Upon her new friend's reaction to her 'helpful' slap of slobber, the enthused woman deflated a little. He shook his coat out and offered her one of those smiles that she got whenever she was trying to help but just got in the way. Her smile became just a little more manual as she kept up an unphased exterior. And then she notices his pause at her next suggestion about the mud and quickly tries to back-pedal before her new bud got frustrated with her, waving it off with her paw once more. "Psh, yeah, silly thought-"
"Maybe... we could look for something to drink and see if there's any mud there!" Wait, what? Really?! Her scarred ears perked up once more. Was he really not going to turn her down, or call her silly? "It would probably wash out the moment I go swimming, but... I could always just go swimming first!" Oh. Oh if she didn't like women she would love this man. Her grin grew bright once more, touching the corner of her sparkling eyes. "Oh! I love swimming! It's one of my favorite things to do, and fishing, too! Have you ever dived underwater and grabbed a fish? It's so much fun, I'll have to show you!" She rambled on excitedly, imagining all the fun they could have. And this was so much better, as even in the summertime the rivers and lakes were absolutely frigid back home. It hadn't bothered her much with her dense coat, but in this land, they could stay and swim for as long as they want without worrying about freezing! "You, my friend, are a genius!" Coa praised, flicking her paw against the man's shoulder.
"The mud will probably dry out too soon if we try to bring it back with us, so I guess that means we have to take the fur to the mud... That means it's time to test the new food carrying method!" Ah, he was right, a foil in their plan. Coahoma made plenty of noises to express her thoughts, from a hrm as she tried to come up with ideas, to an excited gasp and quick nodding as Axel suggested their amazing food transporter. She inched closer, about to help him attach the fur, but hesitated, not wanting to get in the way with her clumsy paws. It seemed he was capable, anyways, as the downy fur finally stuck after a couple of attempts. It waved in the breeze, and she had to admit it looked quite comical, retaining a snort of amusement.
She controlled herself better as she was brought back to their current situation.
"Oh, uh..." She hadn't thought about that. She glanced over to where they had fallen into the pit in the first place. Hrm, the ledge was quite tall... but, so was she? "Maybe-! Nah, that won't work..." Even if she could lift him out of the gulch, how was she supposed to get out after? No offense to the little man, but she doubted he could pull up her hefty build. She looked behind her to where the dry little canyon deepened and then rose into a cliff even taller than the ledge, supposedly where a waterfall could have been, cutting off that direction for escape. And finally, her sage eyes turned back to her left, where the brambles lay. "we could..." She trailed off, uncertain. Sure, the thicket was dried out and fragile, and there were some small trails that game had made through it, certainly none she could easily fit through, but the incline was much less treacherous. It seemed like their only option, less her new genius friend had a better idea. "We could try going through the brambles?" She finally suggested. "I mean, our fur, I know! But I'll go ahead to clear a path and keep those thorns from your beautiful coat!" Her own pelt seemed much denser and longer than his, anyways, so it was less likely that the thorns would get through and hurt her. Yeah, totally... great idea, Coa!

Axel's ears perked up as Coa explained how much she loved swimming, and before long, he was grinning, too. Someone else who liked swimming! He could hardly wait to splash water at her, or search for the best diving spots together. His tail wagged at the thought. When she asked him if he had ever grabbed a fish underwater, he shook his head. "I haven't yet, but I'd love to!" They could compete to see who could catch one first, then eat it afterwards. It sounded like the perfect challenge! He was so engrossed in the thought that Coa's compliment almost caught him off guard, but he tried not to flinch at her touch. Suddenly feeling a little bashful, he just smiled and laughed shyly, although he couldn't deny that it felt nice to be appreciated.
As he continued to hook his lost fur onto the brambles hanging off his pelt, Axel could hear Coa trying to figure out their escape route. He was glad he could rely on her whilst he prepared everything they needed for the journey. It sounded like she had an idea, so he looked up hopefully, following her gaze to the ledge just as she dismissed the thought. Tilting his head to one side, he wondered how easy it would be to collapse it further. Just as he thought he had an idea, Coa seemed to come up with something, too. Axel returned his attention to her, excited to hear what she was thinking. After a moments pause, she suggested going through the brambles. He almost shuddered at the thought.
Luckily Coa seemed to be one step ahead of him, acknowledging the risk to their fur and offering a solution. Axel smiled at the idea. "That might work! But... what if they pull out your fur, too?" He gazed at his new friend's coat. Something about it almost seemed familiar. "Oh!" He took a few steps to one side to get a better look. "Your coat kind of looks like my brother's." His tail wagged lightly. "His fur is a little darker, but-" Catching sight of the ledge in the background, Axel paused. "Oh, right! I almost forgot!"
He quickly bounded over to the ledge, not even noticing as a clump of his fur became unhooked from the branches at his side and drifted lightly to the ground. Once he was there, he turned and looked at Coa excitedly. "I had an idea, too." He gestured with his nose to the loose stones and soil from where they had fallen in. "It's probably too steep and unstable to climb as it is, but what if we try digging at it? We might be able to collapse more of it and turn it into a slope!" It was the perfect plan! At least, sort of. Sure, it had its flaws, but at least their fur should be safe. He grinned at Coa, excited to see what she thought. Now they had two ideas to choose from.

Coahoma "Oh, I have got to show you all the best techniques!" To say Coa was thrilled to find someone who enjoyed fishing and swimming as much as she does would be an understatement. She could easily ramble about childhood stories of swimming in frozen lakes and rivers, catching salmon and northern pike... but those thoughts would have to wait for later since they first had to get out of this predicament before they even could go fishing. "That might work! But... what if they pull out your fur, too?" Her new friend asked. Coa was in the middle of waving her paw for the umpteenth time that hour in dismissal, thinking she had plenty of fur to spare when Axel spun the topic in an entirely new direction, instead bringing an excited gasp and a "Really?!" out of her. "That's so cool! I have a brother, too, back home. But he's more grey than brown and not as big as me." However, thinking about him didn't make her as happy as it should be. So she was going to distract herself by asking Axel what his brother was like before he once again turned them back in the direction of their dilemma. "Oh!" She exclaimed, regaining focus. She watched as he bounded away toward the shelf of earth. She noted just how fast he was - and how the fur he had worked so hard on hitching to the brambles unwedged itself and fell to the ground. Her mouth made a little "O", and she jogged after him, stopping to pick up the little clump of fur while her ears were pushed forward to hear his idea. "It's probably too steep and unstable to climb as it is, but what if we try digging at it? We might be able to collapse more of it and turn it into a slope!" Man, her new friend truly was a genius! That fluffy, tapered tail of hers wagged behind her as she approached, excited by the idea. But ah- she couldn't say anything until she let go of the fur. She walked right up to him and pressed her nose and the fur right into his side. It stayed... for a fraction of a minute, perhaps, but she was already too distracted to notice if it had fallen again. "Hey, that's better than braving the briars!" She said with a wide grin. Her sage eyes sparkled as she gazed up at the mighty ledge, having defeated them once before, but its victory would be short-lived! Coa lifted her broad front paw accented with large, blunt claws as she added, "And I don't have these big old paws for nothing, so let's do it!" Zawki

Axel made a mental note to ask Coa about her brother later. It sounded like all of his new friends had at least one sibling, and he was excited to learn more. For now though, he just wanted to get out of the pit. They could make conversation on their way to find some mud and water, and the thought of it caused his tail to wag once more. With two ideas to work with, they would be out and having fun again in no time. Maybe they could even turn the process of getting out into an adventure itself.
He laughed softly as Coa attached a piece of fur to the brambles hanging off his side. "That tickles!" He had no idea if it was a piece he had dropped or accidentally left behind, but his attention was quickly drawn back to the plan as Coa approved of his idea. Axel grinned, and took a step back, as he looked up at his friend's massive - albeit kind of scary - bear-like paws. They really would be out in no time!
Practically spinning on the spot, he turned and bounded the rest of the way to the foot of the ledge, before looking back at Coa and giving her an encouraging grin. "Let's get out of here!" Knowing she couldn't be far behind him, he began clawing at the loose material of the ledge. The stones caught on his claws harder than he was expecting, and he paused, coughing a little as dust kicked into the air. "Okay, this will be harder than I thought," he admitted, blinking the dust out of his eyes. For a moment he wondered if Coa could lift him high enough to escape, but he quickly shook away the thought when he tried to imagine lifting her out afterwards. "I might have another idea!" Closing his eyes, Axel clawed hard at the foot of the ledge again, then turned and darted away. Catching his breath in the clearer air, he watched and waited for the dust to settle before running back again. "We just have to avoid the dust." He looked up at Coa and smiled, his tail wagging softly. The dry, rough, rocky material would still hurt, but it was a small price to pay for the freedom that would follow.
