- Axel -
The sky was painted a pale orange as the sunlight began to fade beyond the horizon, the remaining streaks of light twinkling on the surface of the lake as the nearby trees cast long shadows. At last, the intense heat of the day was beginning to subside. The dry grass rustled underpaw as a lone wolf made his way towards the water up ahead, realising that the grass gradually became less parched as he neared the lake. This drought had left him thirsty and longing for the cold, missing the cooler climate of his home up north. His fur was thick, and even now when the sun had almost set, he struggled to adjust to the climate of this new land he had stumbled upon. Yet, amidst the hardship, the lake shone like a glimmering oasis of hope.
Axel took a few steps up to the water's edge, gazing at it briefly before eagerly lapping at the lake's surface. It felt like he hadn't had anything to drink in days, and being able to quench his thirst brought a sudden wave of relief. His tail swayed lightly, and once he was satisfied, he turned his attention to the picturesque scene before him. It appeared he was all alone out here, but it seemed like such a waste of an opportunity to leave so soon. He tapped at the surface of the lake playfully, watching as the ripples began to spread. Giving it another quick tap before jumping back as if he was trying to initiate a game of tag, his tail wagged faster as yet more ripples appeared. He just couldn't help himself, and so he took a few more steps back before running at the water, swiftly leaping into the air and landing with a splash. He then decided to hop around for a while, much like how he would to get around in deep snow, simply enjoying the way it felt to plunge into the water time and time again, watching as droplets splashed into the air and caught the fading light. Though, it felt like something was missing...
Gazing at the surface once more, Axel watched the ripples fade to reveal his reflection, his expression dropping slightly as all began to go quiet. His legs were still half-submerged as he stood there, lifting his gaze to look around briefly. Everything felt so... lonely. It just wasn't the same without someone there to share the moment with. He gave a light sigh, dragging himself out of the lake as the water began to drip from his pelt. With a quick shake, he began to make his way to a shady area where he could rest and wait for morning. He wasn't looking forward to the heat, but perhaps it wouldn't be so quiet then. Still, the light glow of the remaining sunlight was quite mesmerising. He didn't want to close his eyes just yet.

C A S S I U S
Even with the dried ground underfoot and the brittle grass and twigs snapping with the slightest touch, this drought couldn't keep its grip on the land for long. A sweet, summer breeze stirred through the dry foliage, the swaying branches of the thinning woodline casting blotches of light into the deeper shadows of trees, carrying the promising scent of water and fish; a relief from this dry landscape.
With delicate steps, the young man carried himself at a brisk, gathered jog. Cassius felt like he had been stuck in these woods forever, traversing the twists and turns of prey trails, hoping to find some break from the trees. He had nothing against the forest, of course, but lately something had been off about it for him- the dense trees just seemed so tight, so claustrophobic...he thought it was probably because he was alone. He had never been alone in the vast forest before. But! He perked up a little, short, rounded ears pricked towards the trail before him, he could sense a lake ahead, and that would allow him to quench his thirst and relish in the paradise of an open lake...
...and what a paradise it was. Cassius strode from the treeline, the reds and tans of his pelt practically glowing in the warm lighting of sunset. The scene was set so perfectly, like something from a dream. He couldn't help but stop right in his tracks, awe-struck by how the expanse of water shined with oranges and yellows, and the purples of dimming sky. Dark silhouettes of the shoreline rippled across the water to either side, as if framing this perfect moment. Golden eyes sparkled with admiration, and had it not been for his dry tongue longing to drink, he wouldn't have broken from his trance. Without taking his eyes off the sparkling lake, Cassius padded forward, lapping it's sweet, refreshing waters as he waded into the lake until the little waves soaked the soft fur of his belly. With the currents swirling around his legs and the soft breeze ruffling his thick coat; it was a different world entirely, one far better than the dry, dusty grasp of the drought around this land. Not to mention just how open it was, he felt as if he could breathe again without the forest judging his every step.
Perhaps, it was a little too open, however...Cassius hadn't even noticed the one already occupying this part of the shoreline.

A cool breeze blew by, lightly brushing through Axel's damp fur. For a moment, he felt quite content, almost lulled to sleep by its gentle touch. Yet, something didn't seem right. He gave the air a quick sniff, realising that the breeze carried with it a scent that was both familiar and new; it was the scent of a wolf, but not one he had ever met before. Glancing around to try and find the source, he soon noticed a dark figure as it approached the lake, outlined by the golden rays of the setting sun. He decided to stay back and watch for a while, tail swaying lightly as the lonely scene suddenly became a bit more interesting. The stranger's markings caught the light occasionally, revealing shades of red and tan tinted gold by the fading light. It seemed the other wolf was also here for a drink, which came as no surprise, but what was less expected was that the wolf decided to go into the lake. Curious, Axel rose to his paws, taking a few quiet steps forwards to try and get a closer look. He could see now that this stranger was quite large; it was hard to tell how much was muscle and how much was fur, but he found it somewhat unnerving nonetheless.
It appeared the other wolf was yet to notice him, giving him a moment to consider his approach. Though, such an opportunity was not something he often made use of. His curiosity soon got the better of him, and he couldn't resist making his way to the water's edge once more. He decided to let the sound of his pawsteps alert the wolf, purposely stepping in the shallow water to create a gentle pattering sound which he hoped would be easy to notice. At least, that's what he told himself, but it was clear he was enjoying the way the water splashed under his paws. He stopped a few metres away from the stranger, his ears pinning back tentatively as he just stood there for a little while, bathed in the golden light. Giving a playful grin, he closed his eyes briefly as he tilted his head to one side, hoping the dark wolf would not see him as a threat.
"Hello, stranger." His tone was friendly as he spoke, accompanied by a gentle wag of his tail. The greeting ended up sounding far more casual than he had intended, but he never had been a fan of anything too formal to begin with. However, as he watched for the stranger's reaction, Axel's grin soon turned into more of an awkward smile as he began to second-guess his decision. As much as he liked the idea of having some company, this particular company looked quite... scary. Though, perhaps he was a bit too distracted by the wolf's powerful physique, for he failed to notice those gentle eyes of shimmering gold.

C A S S I U S Ahh, the lake water felt so sweet on his dry tongue, so refreshing, and very well needed. Cassius was engulfed in the lake's glory, with its soft current shifting the fur on his legs, the reflection of the sunset seemingly pointing right to him, the cool summer breeze skimming the surface, and the little splashes of hunting fish coming from the shore behind him... Wait, that didn't seem right, how were fish hunting on the shore? His ears flicked back in slow realization. "Hello, stranger." Cassius let out an audible gasp. Jolting, he spun around, though the weight of the water tripped him - with a splash, he stumbled to a sitting position. He likely looked like a startled pup trying to hide something wrong that they did.
"Oh! H-hello...!" The young male stuttered out. His voice held a welcoming tone, but with his eyes wide and rounded ears pinned back, he looked terrified. He hadn't expected another wolf to be here, he hadn't even bothered to look. Perhaps that was his first mistake. Caldera likely would have warned him against that... Golden eyes gazed up at the stranger; a male, it seemed, with an earthy pelt and awkward smile. He wasn't exactly large, to Cassius' relief, though that didn't always mean he couldn't be a threat.
Instinctively he lowered his head, long cheek fur brushing the water's surface. "I'm sorry, I wasn't aware that this place was occupied," he said with an apologetic smile, hoping it would be enough to thwart any potential offense. He really should have paid better attention, to both pack scents and who was in the area around him.

This was a bad idea. A very bad idea. Unsure what to expect, Axel was beginning to regret his decision, but it was a little too late to turn back now. Once he was noticed, the stranger's sudden reaction caught him off guard, causing him to spring backwards in a similarly startled manner.
"Gah!" He almost lost his balance, the shallow water splashing as he quickly spread his paws out to support himself, a panicked look in his eyes. "Don't hurt me!" he barked. "I was just..." His words began to trail off as his gaze met the other wolf's. Only now did he realise that the stranger looked just as terrified as he did. Seeing this, he allowed his posture relax a little, but his heart was still racing. When the dark wolf returned his greeting, all he could do was force a crooked smile, still shocked and admittedly a bit embarrassed.
He watched curiously as the stranger lowered his head, offering an apology as if he was some sort of trespasser. Axel blinked a couple of times, slowly standing up straight from his awkward position. This situation was new to him and he had no idea how to respond, but what he did know was that he felt terribly guilty.
"N-no, it's my fault!" he assured. "I just saw you in the water and wondered what you were up to. I never meant to startle you." Glancing at the surface of the lake as it gently brushed against his ankles, he gave a short, awkward laugh. "I probably should have waited a little longer before approaching, but seeing as we're both wet now, would you mind if I joined you?" His tail began to sway lightly, his expression friendly and playful as he returned his gaze to the wolf.

C A S S I U S The stranger gasped and...pleaded? At first, Cassius was nothing but confused. Why on earth would he ever hurt him? Wasn't he the one intruding? His brow raised with concern as he gazed at the stranger's startled stance, seemingly ready to flee. This was...a first. Cassius tried opening his mouth to say something, but the awkward silence was weighing down on him, and he quickly shut his maw.
"N-no, it's my fault!" What? His round ears perked forward, "I just saw you in the water and wondered what you were up to. I never meant to startle you." Oh... amber eyes slid to the side in embarrassment, how could he possibly overreact so much? But, this strange male seemed to be frightened as well, so perhaps it wasn't as humiliating as he imagined. "I suppose we both startled each other," He said, looking up at the fellow with a soft smile. "I probably should have waited a little longer before approaching, but seeing as we're both wet now, would you mind if I joined you?" He, wanted to join him... "In the lake?" He finished his thought aloud. Cassius wasn't sure how to take this, but...he seemed so nice, and who was he to pass up a little company? Perhaps he was a bit too trusting. "I mean, of course!"
His smile broadened as he stood, inviting the smaller male further into the water with him. "I'm Cassius," He introduced himself with a gentle, welcoming voice. "May I ask your name?"
