The Vertok the greatest strength is found in unity Total: 10 | Male: 8 | Female: 2
Known as the kindest wolves of the three packs, the Vertok turn away few and welcome many. Theirs is a pack whose loyalty to each other knows no bounds. It is said that though it may seem as you are facing but one Vertok, know that others of their pack are not far behind. Despite their less than desirable circumstances, they have yet to forget their compassion. Quick to extend a helping hand where needed, they can always be relied on to be there for their packmates. Running contrary to their usual treatment, they hold a dislike for the Sanzin for having taking their ancestral territory from them. Now residing in the north-reaching mountains, they are the once powerful now diminished Vertok. The King & Queen

Rankings Total: 9 | Male: 7 | Female: 2 Elders: 0 | Adults: 8 | Pups and Yearlings: 2
High Ranks
KING and QUEEN The King and Queen are the joint leaders of the pack. They work together to rule the group. Senior members of the pack act as advisors to the two leaders. The pair are not always mates and usually have a friendly relationship. Despite the rank being called King and Queen, the two ruling wolves do not have to be male and female. It can be two male or two females rulers. - KING: available-currently held by NPC's QUEEN: available-currently held by NPC's
Specialized Ranks
ROOKS | BISHOPS | KNIGHTS Rooks are hunters. Hunting parties are made of five members, one to two Rooks with the rest being pawns. The rooks act as party leaders and direct the pawns during the hunt. During wartime, they act as scouts and spies.
Bishops are healers. They perform the more skilled duties of medics.
Knights are warriors. Patrol groups are made of three to five wolves, one to two Knight and two to three Pawns. The Knight leads the patrol and are reminiscent of unit commanders. Defense groups are made of three or more Knights and defend the pack against bears and other threats. During wartime, they are the vanguard and first line of defense. - Rook Apprentice Briar - Bishop Skits - Knight Athena Knight Hawk Knight Ramir Knight Tristan - open
The Main Body
PAWNS They make up the majority of the pack. All shapes and sizes, they are not specialized in any one duty and are thus less skilled than the specialized ranks. Typically starting off with assisting the knights, if they show skill more towards those of a rook's, they will be called to assist the rooks more often. Pawns are less likely to be pulled to assist the bishops. Should they show sufficient knowledge, they are more likely to assigned to the bishops. - Maxem Zero Malakai - open

Ranking Up
To rank up, a wolf, at least a year or older, may ask for an apprenticeship from a currently active specialized rank. Apprenticeships can last for any length of time but most are around a year long. Upon completing the apprenticeship, they rank up. There are no challenges to rank up in this pack, ranking up is simply done by apprenticeship or if the role of leader is desired, voting.
Mentoring and Apprenticing All wolves born into the pack start out as Pawns. Should they desire to specialize in a trade, they must ask a currently active specialized wolf to mentor them. Before they are allowed to gain a mentor, they must be at least one year of age. They are allowed to Promise to a mentor before one year of age. In a Promise, the mentor promises to mentor the apprentice once they are of age. Until that time, they will take no other apprentices.
If one does not enter into a Promise during pup-hood, a mentor is found by asking. They may approach any currently active specialized wolf for a apprenticeship. The mentor has the right to refuse. If they do, the potential apprentice must ask another wolf. They cannot ask a wolf that currently has an apprentice as only one apprentice is allowed per mentor. In the case that a wolf is asked to be a mentor by two or more wolves at the same time, trials are allowed to decide which to mentor. No trials that draw blood are allowed but races, mock battles, hunts and similar trials are allowed to test the prospective apprentices to either refuse all or choose one.
Once a mentor has been found, the apprentice will then begin training with their mentor. They will move from the Central Keep to the chamber of their desired rank. Depending on the mentor and apprentice, apprenticeship lengths will vary. Most take around a year. It is up to the mentor when an apprentice is ready and thus complete their apprenticeship. Once the apprenticeship is completed, the apprentice ranks up into the appropriate rank.
Changing Leadership Pack leaders are voted in by the pack. They rule until either one or both decide to step down or are killed. If one decides to step down or is killed, then the other must also rescind leadership. In rare cases, if the pack ever feels that the current King and/or Queen are inadequate at their job then they may force the pair to step down. A new pair of leaders will then be voted for by the pack.
Possible candidates for the leader position must be nominated within a week after the old leaders resign. Candidates must be at least three years old. Wolves that wish to be leader must find a partner to run together with. Once a pair is made, they may nominate themselves. Wolves may nominate other wolves as well and the nominated wolf may accept or decline the nomination. If they accept, the nominated must seek out a partner during the nominations week. If they fail to find a campaign partner, they lose their place by default.
After a week of nominations, the candidate pairs have a week to campaign and win votes from the rest of the pack. Afterwards, wolves are given three days to vote. A pair must win 50% of the votes to win and become leader. If that doesn't happen in the first round then a second round of voting will happen with only the top two pairs available to be voted for. Voting lasts for two days in the second round. The victors of the second round becomes the pack's new leaders.

Specialties
Prey Prey unique to the Vertok territory include bighorn sheep, mountain goats, ibexes, and bats among other mountain and cave-dwelling animals. It is rare for them to have excess food to bring to the Three Packs Meeting. They usual do not bring prey to trade.
Hides Due to the colder temperatures of their territory, the Vertok have learned to use the hide of larger prey as bedding. In their hunts, they attempt to do as little damage to the hide as possible. Animals with larger, thicker furs are often skinned and their hide preserved for the winter. They do not rely on the furs too much. Hides are given to the Bishops first to provide for their patients, than the elders, and finely the ones most needing. Any remaining hides may be used by the rest of the pack but are usually stores away for later use or taken to the Three Packs Meeting for trade. Events
The Day of Anlira Spring
The Day of Anlira takes place in the spring. The Vertok open up the territory to other wolves whether they be members of another pack, except the Sanzin, loners or Guild members. It is a time for exchanging gifts and professing loves. The pack gives gifts to friends, family, lovers and visitors. Some gifts have special meaning. For instance, flowers are given to lovers or love interests whiles parts of antlers are given to close friends. Generally, return gifts are expected when given a gift. It is understood that if a gift is not given in return, than the next year, the return gift must be twice as grand as the given gift.
The Stargazer's Festival End of Summer
The Stargazer's Festival takes place at the end of summer. It is a day of festivities and games and a final chance for the pack to let loose before the onset of winter. The King and Queen ascend to the highest point in the territory. They howl together to indicate the beginning of the festival. A large feast is prepared and the day is spent in song and dance. Easier games are prepared by some of the pack members for the pups to play for prizes. More difficult games like mock battles and races are set up for the older wolves to compete. Apprentices often use these games to show off how much they've improved.
A grand play is held at sunset for the entire pack. It is a great honor to be chosen to play a part in it. The chosen actors spend the entire week leading up to the play preparing. The play is one means for the pack to remember its history. It often depicts various events in the pack's history. The story chosen differs from year to year and is chosen by the senior members of the pack along with the King and Queen.
The final festivities occurs after dusk. The pack ascends to the highest point in the territory and the elders tell tales and legends of the pack. To end the festival, the entire pack gets together at the peak and howls. Traditionally, wolves will make a wish with their howl.

History
The Rise of the Legionaries: Year 757
The peace agreement allowed the Vertok to enjoy several years of stability and prosperity. That stability would not last though. A group of wolves that called themselves the Legionaries, after the Aenearids' council of advisors to the Ruler, could not let go of the past. They clung to the old ways and history of the Aenearids. For several years, they plotted behind the scenes looking for a means to regain their old glory. Their chance came with the death of the Poisoner. The Legionaries had spies among the Sanzin and those spies reported the competitors for the throne. After deliberating, it was decided that the Gladiator was their best bet. By placing the Gladiator in power, they could disrupt the Sanzin and destroy them from within. They began lending their support to the Gladiator from the shadows. With the Vertok's support, it became clear the Gladiator would come out on top. When the King and Queen of the Vertok realized what the Legionnaires had done, they were furious, but it was far too late. The Legionaries had meddled in another pack's affairs and succeeded. The Gladiator was crowned and the Sanzin fell into chaos. The King and Queen were furious and exiled the Legionaries' leaders. The Legionaries' leaders, angered at the display, vowed to return saying the Vertok would see their worth someday and hail them as heroes. Remaining wolves loyal to the Legionaries kept their mouths shut and slipped into the shadows, looking to avoid the fate of their leaders. Over the years, the Vertok watched the Sanzin become increasingly destabilized. The root of it all lying with the rise of the Gladiator. As the Vertok watched their greatest foe fall, a mixture of pity and guilt flowed through the pack. Had they not interfered, the Sanzin might have changed for the better. But now, the pack only grew darker with each passing day.
The Shattering of Faith: Year 763
The discourse in the pack only grew as they watched the Sanzin become more and more power-hungry and their own pack stagnate. While their leaders held long reigns of peace, it was at the cost of growth. Cornered by the devil-like Sanzin and the iron walled Au'Dar, they had no chance to grow their territory, influence, or power. With this stagnation came dissention. The pack had now seen the power the Legionaries had held. As the dark half of the Vertok, they had managed to destabilize the Sanzin so that they were constantly on the edge of civil war. The faction of Legionaries that was thought to have disappeared with the exile of their leaders silently grew larger within the Vertok. Soon enough, the supporters made up 40% of the pack and that 40% began to move. Their target was none other than the Au'Dar. It was with this event that the Au'Dar shut their doors permanently. Never again would they trust outsiders. The New Legionaries attacked the Au'Dar at sunset. They set their eyes, not on the den site, but the Au'Dar's holy land: the Citadel. The New Legionaries knew how deeply the Au'Dar valued their tafa and made to destroy them by destroying their core. They managed to breach the outer edges of the Citadel and tore apart tafa after tafa. The Au'Dar's rage after that day could not be equaled. The Vertok lost nearly all the wolves that took part in the attack. Had it not been for the efforts of the King and Queen of the time, the Au'Dar would have withdrawn from the Three Packs Meeting entirely. A peace, riddled with cracks and holes, was shakily reestablished, but one wrong move and that peace would break completely.
The Pup-nappings: Year 769
Up until this point, the Vertok had had an unsteady neutrality with the other two packs in the valley. Things changed with the pup-nappings. The Vertok were furious with the Sanzin. Any feelings of guilt that had existed because of the actions of the Legionaries dissolved. All that was left was a cold hatred and disgust. From this event forth, the Vertok and Sanzin became mortal enemies.
